The game is pretty good except for the choppy sound. I called Lucas Arts tech. support and they said it choppy because of the way the GUS works, takes up too much CPU time or something. Does anyone else have the same problem? I got a 486/66, 2x CD ROM, 8MB RAM. I'm running off the boot disk right to play the game. Are there any fixes? Thanks, Jarrod ------------------------------ From: Harry C Pulley IV Date: Wed, 3 Jan 1996 04:09:29 -0500 (EST) Subject: UAKM static What video card do you have? UAKM has trouble with video cards if they are too slow, in general. What CPU and type of video card do you have? If you have a Cirrus Logic 542x card then you may be in luck. You can get 542xvga.exe (or 542xvgal.exe for local bus cards) from www.cirrus.com. These TSRs load the BIOS for the card into RAM. It turns out that the card is not properly grounded or something so accessing the ROM can cause interference with other stuff. Most games don't use the ROM except to select a VESA mode so that this is not a problem. I guess UAKM uses BIOS calls all the time or something? Anyways, I have a 5428. I could never get rid of all the crackle but %99 of it was gone. The good news: Yes - reinstating the line midi1=ultmport.drv in SYSTEM.INI got it working again. This uses the old ultmport.drv which should still be in \windows\system. Whether you want 'midi1' or 'midi2' or whatever depends on what other MIDI devices you have (I have midi2=mrouter.drv - this is the thing that allows the output from one MIDI app to be used as the input for another). The bad news: Win95 is still just as likely to hang (mouse pointer disappears, nothing responds, reset button required) when I use an app to attempt to access the MIDI in port. Sometimes it works, and once it works, it stays working for the duration of the Win95 session. This is the one thing that I hoped the new drivers would fix. - -- Clarke Brunt (CCB), Principal Software Engineer, Laser-Scan Ltd, Science Park, Milton Rd, CAMBRIDGE, CB4 4FY, England. Hi all ! I think the new GUS drivers for WIN 95 s*ck ! Norton System Info says that the biggest part of the driver is 16 bit. There actually is a 32 bit part but I think it's only a dummy device that points to the 16 bit part. The 32 bit part is 7026 bytes only..... that's what I call "low system overhead", but the 16 bit part is 128864 bytes (ugh !). And what does it do ? It makes *.wav files click and loops them (until you reboot). It makes *.mid files hiss and you can only listen to the static because THERE IS *NO* MIDI IN/OUT DEVICE !!!! It makes me sick, real sick ! But what am I going to do about it ? Nothing I guess..... Questions to the tech-guys at Gravis are answered with quotes from this mailing list (yes our own digest !) and they do not respond to flames. So I'll just sit back, turn on my good old 8 bit Soundblaster (1988) and listen to the "sounds" it produces. Or should I just downgrade to WIN 3.11 ?? Lars Hameeteman. And HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all! What a way to start off a New Year. Gravis is now on the Internet with their own FTP site and Home Page. And we have some changes of our own as well. As you all know by now, we have lost the services of EPAS as our Ultrasound Internet Archive Service's submission site. They need their computer back. So we all wish to thank the fine folks over at EPAS for sharing their resources with us all these years. They were bascially the spark that starting this whole GUS drive! And a special thank you to ORST for taking over the submissions. ORST also has a fancier ftp setup which will allow me to look after the submissions a lot better. e.g. submissions are no longer delete-able so uploaders, upload away! And I have now setup an automated watchdog to see who's doing what in the submit directory so I'll know if you've been naughty or nice.... :) ORST is now our main site with all the missing files restored and submission to boot! And what's a better way to start off the new year, with a new submission site, than by starting off the new year of submissions right on ORST! Made my chore of validating new files a lot quicker. :) But once again, we have a whole array of GUS supporter software. There is a new demo, game patches to support the GUS, a cool new SVGA game with GUS & modem support, the Gravis updates and the Win95 driver (finally), the updated G-List with info on GUS support for various commercial games, more GUS players from trackers to patch players, a new Manley OS/2 driver for the GUS (Robert is making headways with Gravis re: OS/2 driver), and of course the usual array of cool new sounds, patches and songs for the GUS. Way to go and thanks to everyone's continual support for the GUS, for making your software support the GUS and to all those who keeps writing things specically for the GUS. Let's make 1996 one heck of a GUS year! :) We now have the facilities and capacity to do a lot more and we will be making new annoucements on our progress on the integration of the Ultrasound Internet Archive Services with Gravis themselves. Expect many more fancy things to come now that Gravis is on The Net. :) Happy GUSing! Thomas. I sent this also to tech@gravis.com and got an automated ack, but no help yet. I installed the new drivers yesterday. I tried to follow the instructions as carefully as possible. However, when it came time to reboot the system the first time after installing the new driver, I got a GPF in MMSYSTEM, and then everything pretty much hung. After trying a number of other things (like booting in safe mode and attempting to change the resource settings) I finally thought that maybe the old and new drivers were conflicting. I edited SYSTEM.INI to comment out (with ! in the front) all references to the .drv. Voila! It booted, and after I resumed following the directions, the .WAV playback started working just fine. However, I have not been able to get any MIDI synth output. When I try playing a MIDI file from the media player, I get no sound, although the manager carries on like all is well (with the time marking moving along). If I go to the patch manager, I can attempt to load a patch, but nothing happens (it does not appear on the GUS side, and the memory available remains at 1000 K (or whatever it was originally). I checked to make sure that the GUS Synth was set up as the default MIDI device, that the ULTRADIR variable was set, that I could play MIDI from DOS using mididemo (I booted with F8 and selected command line...I did not try to use a DOS box). I'm out of ideas. How about you? BTW, this is a no-name 486DX100 system. I have one of the early GUS classic cards (I can't remember the rev number, but before the additional mixer stuff was added). I've encountered exactly the same thing. If you change any GUS setup in Win95, it does not tell you to reboot, but as soon as any sound is played, Win95 crashes and even CTRL-ALT-DEL will not work. I think that's the bug in install routine which was suppose to set a flag in Win95, so the reboot is required if any changes in setup are maid. Hopefully Gravis will fix it in upcoming release. In general, AVI and QuickTime audio sounds much better now than in Win 3.11 w/ VfW 1.1e and QT 2.03 and Gravis drivers 4.1 MIDI sounds kind of different in Media Player, may be because the default patch set in not properly set up. I would appreciate if someone who got MIDI working right under Win95 would post setup pointers. I know there was a thread about it a month or so ago, but I didn't have the game then, so would someone mind retelling? Thanks :) ------------------------------ From: kyhsin@singnet.com.sg Date: Thu, 4 Jan 1996 16:02:51 +0800 Subject: OS/2 MIDI Hello, I am currently running OS/2 Warp and I have loaded the OS/2 drivers for GUS but I could not get any MIDI. Other than this, the GUS seems to work fine.
