I seem to have found the GUS Midi bug in 11th Hour. The repair involves a file replacement for your "*.gus" file in your games directory. I have not had any one else try this yet but am looking for people to try it. The worst that it will do is not work. I know there is alot of you out there so If you want to try it, then email me and include the amount of ram on your GUS. I check my mail several times a day so I will send it right away as an attachment(its only 265 bytes). All that I ask is an immediate response back whether or not it worked for you. I've been having problems installing my 4.10 disk set, and I think its a quirk of Windows 95 which is causing the install routine to think that I don't have enough memory. At the suggestion of a Gravis support technician, I am trying to install the software from the DOS safe boot option (6) of Windows 95, i.e. bypassing all drivers. (This 4.10 disk set is Windows 3.1 software, of course, but I need to install it first to install the Windows 95 driver). The install program on disk 1 goes fine, except after all the files seem to be installed in the C:\ULTRASND directory, it tells me INSTAL Sorry, not enough memory is available. Temporary unloading of any memory resident programs may help. (The autoexec.bat and config.sys files were *not* yet modified.) I most definitely have enough memory (16MB, which Windows 95 sees), so I don't know what the problem is. This happened also when I tried it from an old DOS boot disk (with only the bare minimum on it). Any ideas as to what is going wrong here? I tried the Gravis technical support number from about 2:30 to 4:00 pretty solid but never got through ... perhaps they're having a lot of calls for the Window 95 drivers. Would that I get that far soon! :-} Thanks for any tips! Dave - ---- Dr. David E. Am I missing some functionalities I don't know about by not > upgrading? Would someone do a thorough review to help us decide? TIA. IMHO, the GUS Win95 drivers suck. Why? Read on. The drivers give a more "sleeker" configuration interface if not annoying. I mean, it takes so many mouse clicks just to configure my GUS card. Yes I have a Shortcut to Multimedia Icon, but I still have to click: Shortcut to Multimedia | Advanced | MIDI Devices and Instruments | MIDI for Gravis UltraSound Classic | Settings | UltraSound Setup. Of course that's Microsoft's fault and not Gravis', but I still don't see much of an improvement in the drivers. There appears to be no new features in terms of patch support, ie no support for stereo patches, multi-layered patches, multiple drum and melodic banks (the current drivers can only support one drum bank, not including the "fallback to drum bank 0"). Gravis, please correct me and say the new drivers support these. It's been years already and Gravis still hasn't done anthing about these. Maybe no one has been complaining about these features, if so well here they are! I just hope the PnP will support these, but I doubt it. With a 1MB ROM patch, I doubt we will be hearing a multi-layered piano patch. Oh well, I guess (?) I can live with hearing a piano patch where pressing the keys hard == "piano patch with louder volume", and pressing the keys softly == "same piano patch with softer volume". NOT! Hopefully the new PnP cards will have these features, so we can hear some seriously sounding custom patches. Let's hear that 8MB, multi-layered, stereo grand piano patch! No to my report with the buggy Win95 drivers. First of all, before starting, I installed the original Win3.1 ultmport.drv for my MIDI IN port (so I can use the MIDI port) along with my Win95 GUS drivers, so the 16-bit MIDI-IN port driver may have something to do with some of my problems. For one thing, I noticed a rather severe bug in the drivers. When I used Eero's Pro Patches Lite v1.40 with the drivers configured to 16-bit memory mode, I get static when playing midi files. By static, I mean static and nothing else, meaning to say I hear noise and not anything resembling instruments. But when I switch to 8-bit memory mode, the static disappears. WTF? I don't want to be stuck in 8-bit mode! Second, I found a bug that is very annoying. In the Win3.1 drivers, I can switch from 8-bit to 16-bit memory mode without rebooting. But here I have to reboot, because any changes made to the GUS configuration, whether to change DMAs, buffer sizes, etc, will cause Win95 to crash if one sound must be played through the GUS. Doh, that means I gotta take out the 'ding.wav' so Win95 will reboot gracefully (instead of locking up because it has to play that wav file before quitting). ;-) The second bug is a bit frustrating because every change made in the UltraSound setup doesn't prompt me to reboot, so I assume that one of the new features of the Win95 driver is the 'no-reboot-when-change-settings', but in my case, it just doesn't work. Finally, when I shutdown to MS-DOS mode, I gotta reboot (ie. three finger salute, ctrl-alt-del, or by reset button) rather than entering command 'exit' to get back into Win95 after using a program that uses the GUS. Seems like Win95 locks up afterwards when a sound is played. Nice try Gravis, but you'll need to do a lot more better. I just hope the Pnp cards will have better Win95 drivers, with none of the bugs I encountered. - -george ------------------------------ From: Steven LeBrun Date: Fri, 29 Dec 1995 16:03:31 -0500 Subject: Win95 driver problems (Endless Looping) I have also been having a problem with my GUS going into an endless loop when it plays WAV files since I have installed the GUS Win95 drivers. In a previous post, Shawn Ruttledge reported getting this looping problem during the Windows 95 Opening sequence. In my case, it happens randomly. The looping problem has become worst (more frequently) since I reduced the DMA buffer sizes. So far the only solution that I have found that works is to manually play another WAV file. Sometimes I have to play the WAV file twice. I emailed Gravis Tech Support and the reply that I got back was to make sure that the Settings (DMA/IRQ's) are the same for Win95 as they are for DOS. Unfortunately, this did not make a difference in the problem. I also checked for any resource conflicts and found none. I also have notice some popping at times. The popping actually sounds like a snippit of a WAV file. I installed the Win95 driver for Gravis Ultrasound Classic. I am assuming that is what Gravis is calling the pre-MAX cards. My GUS is a version 2.2 in a 486DX/33 with 20MB. On the plus side, playback of AVI files is much better with the new Win95 driver. With the Win 3.1 drivers, AVI file playback was always choppy. Now they run smooth. I also think that the GUS sounds better with the Win95 driver -- cleaner sounds. Of course, better sounds is subjective so it may be that I hearing what I want to hear. - -- +---------------------------------------------------------------+ | Steven F. I just have some random comments to try to temper the note of despair. Both Red Book audio and digital sound have significant drawbacks. They both use very large amounts of CD-ROM space compared to either MIDI or MOD-type formats. Digital audio can reduce this penalty only by reducing quality, and it's ironic that this can be tolerated because it still sounds so much better than the FM MIDI probably still in the majority out there; while punishing most those with the best sound gear. Red Book audio prevents access to CD-ROM data while it is playing. What is the implication of the GUS-family evolution to having synth + CODEC (other than my belief that there was no real reason digital-through-synth couldn't have been programmed reliably, but wasn't figured out). > Just about every new game these days uses a standard sound driver library > anyway (HMI, Miles, etc.) so its not surprising that many games have > similar problems supporting the GUS. However because the majority of > cards out there don't do this the generic game sound drivers do all of > their mixing using the CPU (even DOOM I think which sounds great on a GUS). I just don't think the hardware mixing ability is that much of an edge, and THAT is why it is so slow in coming. There do seem to be bugs which never get solved, and get propagated by the standard drivers; I don't know why this is, but the GUS is virtually the only card out there which cannot be described as old-technology keyboard synth chips and simple DAC chips thrown into the PC expansion bus form. I suspect the GUS software effort just keeps tripping over unanticipated and ill-understood problems. > So basically what I'm getting at is that unless game developers are going > to support the GUS natively (forget it) or WIN'95 provides the driver > support the GUS needs for its particular capabilities (I hope so) then the > GUS is no more than a great sounding card with mediocre support. Since I think this is a matter of bugs, and not a matter of it's hardware needing "particular capabilities" used, I think this is about hoping for some breakthroughs, not about a hopelessness of getting the card used in it's own special way. > Even Gravis have been very disappointing in their support, their web > presence being long overdue. Small company, with an iffy soundcard business. I'm being turned into a complete cynic on this subject. As far as I can see, neither forum is capable of being provided either of these without using them to bite the hand that feeds them, and Gravis is much better off keeping it all secret. > It's unfortunate because it really looked like the GUS was getting somewhere > a while back, It did? > but now its fallen into obscurity. Hey, it's getting old. Let's give generation two a chance. If it flys, it will probably help legacy support out. It's hard to be generous when you're just "making do." > It no longer has a unique edge to set it apart from all the other MIDI > capable soundcards, particularly with games. And what edge was that? > The new soundcard from gravis using the Interwave chip doesn't stick > out from the crowd and I'm sure that, here at least, it won't be any > cheaper than the other similar cards available. Don't you think it's a little premature to come to that conclusion. I don't see anything very similar other than the Reveal WaveExtremes and Gravis has the cost advantage of getting some royalties from IW chip sales. When I went looking around for prices a bit ago, the SB32 was ~$170 with no RAM, and I found the GUS P&P with no RAM at ~$120. Can we wait until we get some performance reports before we bury the P&P? And watch its price for a while? > Sorry for the length of this, it's my first contribution and I needed > to get these things of my chest. Just a question, are the GUS Win95 drivers 32 bit? If they are, why is it that the MSINFO (from Office 95) shows them as 16 bit? Is MSINFO faulty? Running MSINFO and selecting "Active Modules" gets the following: Module Name: ULTRASND Version: 1.0.0.0 Date: 12/22/95 Size: 107392 16-bit: YES Path: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ULTRASND.DRV Does it really matter? Dong-Kinh ------------------------------ From: John Graham Date: Sat, 30 Dec 1995 21:48:08 GMT Subject: GUS with Sony CDROM I have an 'original' Gravis Ultrasound card, rev 2.2 fully populated with 1Mb, working well and much loved of course. I also have a Sony CDU-33A with it's own (Amitek) controller card. Up until now this has been comfortable but having changed my motherboard I'm now short of ISA slots! My question is :- can I connect the CD directly to Gravis? The (very early) user documentation I have describes an optional daughterboard for "all Sony and compatible CD players and features a 4 pin connector". Eh? My 2.2 Gravis has a four pin connector for CD audio in, and also what looks like a CDROM connection. Do the Gravis drivers now support a CD on one of them? The Gravis connector is 36 pins, my Sony CDU-33A uses 34 pins, although it came along with an 34/40 adaptor. Can anyone make sense of this, or do I need to go for a more modern 'MAX'? I'm trying to fix my Privateer. It used to work just fine with SBOS, now (possibly due to the drivers for my new CD-ROM), it crashes after the first autopilot. I've heard vicious rumours of patches and fixes for Privateer, but have been unable to locate them on the net. Could someone point me in the right direction or just mail them to me? Now, I got mine (aaaah...) and I can now make a comparasion with the GUS :) So here it goes... Playing low quality sound files on the GUS sounds a lot better than on the SB32. SB muffles the sound so bad, amen. But for high quality sound (8 bits 22Khz and over) I don't see any differences. Also, the SB32 microphone input is making noise... guess that's why I still plug my SB in the GUS, and not the contrary. Using the default instruments and mapping of the GUS and SB32, the GUS wins overall. SB32 still makes sound some (simple) MIDI better than the GUS, but most of them are really unexceptably played wrong and 1 meg for 128 intrusments is asking for a bit too much. SB32 also has Chorus and Reverb, which the GUS don't have, but I don't feel it's a big deal, but it sounds kool. SB32 has SUPPORT and GOOD SUPPORT. I do love my GUS, but all today's games have weird GUS support. Joystick not working, game crashing, choppy sound, high CPU usage, that kind of crap. I still use my GUS when the game supports it well. SB is supported also on all (popular?) Intel OS platforms (I think so). On the other hand, GUS has good support from Europe, especially the demo scene (demos, module players). youhou! Weird thing of the SB32 is the use of a big 30Kb TSR just to use PLAY and RECORD. !?? Guess that are the major points. Hey, BTW, I run a SB32 and a GUS at the same time under OS/2, great, isn't? :-) Bye! ------------------------------ From: David Burton Date: Tue, 2 Jan 96 16:21:13 PST Subject: utility to get WAV's from audio CD I know it's been posted before, but can anyone tell me the name of the utility that allows me to get audio data from a CD and store into a WAV file?
