Now that the wait is finally over, I'm really interested to know if it works. The 5.51 driver is working great under my Win95, so the question is should I leave it alone or should I take the plunge, especially knowing that at the end of January the second release will arrive with the missing DOS box support. Am I missing some functionalities I don't know about by not upgrading? Would someone do a thorough review to help us decide? Okay, I hapily downloaded the Win95 drivers for my GUS ACE at home.. It seems to work fine.. BUT, I wish Gravis would provide some additional documentation regarding teh ACE, as it's configuration is somewhat different than the Classic, and the MAX. Anyways, here's my setup.. SB16Asp Irq: 5 Dma: 1,6 Port: 220 Gus ACE ULTRASND=260,7,7,7,7 Anyways, I plug my Mic in to the SB16, and if I talk into it, I get the sound through my stereo, showing me that it's going through my system, etc.. (as I can control the volume via mixer in Win95). Under my sound setup, I have playback device set for GUS, and recording device set for SB16. Yet, when I try loading something like 'Sound Recorder', 'Sound OLE', or 'Wave Studio', and I hit record, and say stuff, nothing is reoorded, yet I can still hear what I'm saying through the stereo.. Anyone know of why this is happening, and how I can resolve this?? Should my settings have the recording DMA set to 6 to match my SB16? And should I change the SoundBlaster/Midi IRQ? Any help would be appreciated. - -- Hit any user to continue. - --------------------------------------------------------------- Will Kim UUNET Canada, Toronto / Electrical Eng - Univ Of Waterloo E-Mail: will@uunet.ca Finger: wkim@novice.uwaterloo.ca - --------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ From: Robert Virding Date: Thu, 28 Dec 1995 15:42:14 +0100 Subject: Problems with GUS and Windows, why does it now work? I have had problems running some programs under Windows in that the=20 sound has not worked properly for some games. Speech and music has=20 either been non-existent or intermittant, and sometimes caused a the=20 system to hang or crash. My settings are: ULTRASND=3D220,1,1,12,5 Fortunately, last night I found a way of making it all work. The FAQ=20 mentions that for some speech recognition programms you can get better=20 interactive response by making the DMA buffers smaller, even down 512=20 bytes. I tried reducing them from the default of 8192 bytes down to=20 2048 bytes and everything suddenly worked. This is of course very good but it has left me wondering. Why does now=20 work? What effect has changing the size of the DMA buffers? Should they=20 be as big as possible? Or as small? Is this the effect of a bug=20 somewhere? Thanks for any help in understanding what is going on. Everything works super under DOS (except for Sim City which sometimes locks the machine after quitting a game with the SB). But how easy is it to get two sound cards going under Win95? Right now the SB works super (except it sounds like crap when playing MIDI files), but if the Gravis drivers for Win95 are any good, I'd like to give my GUS a shot. But only if it's not going to cause more headaches than it solves. Anyone ever do anything like this?
