This switch stands for Short Sustain, and is needed for some games. It makes sure all sounds will fade out after a few seconds. Otherwise a certain note might keep 'hanging'. Is there a way to have this -ss in the newest megaem? I need it for Super Tetris (and others). Is there a way to > have this -ss in the newest megaem? I need it for Super Tetris (and > others). I really miss this feature, too. I still use MegaEm 2.03b for a number of games for exactly this reason. The other switches I miss from MegaEm 2.03b are -FAST (needed by some Sierra games), -SBB and -SBI (which allow me to use MegaEm for SB digital effects *instead* of my real SB). I don't have access to my home PC with the GUS installed right now. Is there an E-mail address for the author in the documentation for MegaEm 3.06b, so that we could send him our requests (and tell him what a fine job he's doing with MegaEm). Dewi Daniels ------------------------------ From: P.Kendell@bra0119.wins.icl.co.uk (Peter Kendell) Date: Thu, 07 Dec 95 10:06:37 GMT Subject: FT2 vs MIDI keyboard I'm trying to use a Fatar Studio 49 MIDI keyboard with FastTracker II (V2.03 and 2.04) and a GUSMAX, but I'm having a few problems. When I first press a key, it usually sounds OK and records correctly, velocity information and all. But then that key seems to go dead. I can play the one next to it, or just about any other and it will work, but the original key stays dead for an indeterminate amount of time. This is no way to lay down a drum track It's disappointing because I got the keyboard to make note input into FT2 faster and easier... I'm using a Gravis MIDI adaptor. The keyboard/adaptor/card combination works just fine with MIDIFIER and Patch Manager, so I don't think there's anything wrong with the hardware or the configuration of my GUSMAX. Help, please! Peter - -- ------------------------------ From: Yossi Oren Date: Thu, 07 Dec 95 18:36:21 +0200 Subject: Re: The GUS Daily Digest V26 #6 Chris, to run Serf City (a cute game by all means!) on a GUS, you need to run loadpats before the game, period. If that doesn't work try getting a newer version of the AIL32 drivers needed (gf1midi.dll and gf1digi.dll) and copying them over. I played this game out of the box with no trouble at all. Jesse, the "suicidal" dogma of loading patches (i.e. load it asap when the note on is recieved) is used by MIDIFIER. You'll see that MIDIFIER pauses a bit when a note is played for the first time. It's a small delay but since we're talking music here it's VERY noticable. In fact, MIDIFIER was programmed to try out this idea. I guess the idea failed. If the GUS device recieves a stream of note-ons, it can't dynamically load the patches without ruining the overall sound. John, a 100MHz 604 can run like a 33MHz 486. OK. How about a 233-MHz chip? How about an Alpha AXP? There's no end to it, we're just talking "add more hardware" here. Still, emulation can improve on the source. Ricky, you run the GUS at 210h, just like I did, and you should move it to 240h, just like I was told to do. See, 100+210=310h, smack in the middle of SCSI and CDROM areas. Could cause unknown errors. Harry, SBOS doesn't have to load the whole patch on board and then play it - it would cause a noticable delay, among other things. What it does instead is set up a small (We're talking 512 bytes or something) buffer, tell the GF1 it's a looped patch and update the RAM fast enough to fool the GF1. It sounds kludgy because it is, but you can console yourself in the fact that the Windows drivers do just the same. HTH! Yossi. lioren1@weizmann.weizmann.ac.il / Visit . Todd Hildebrand, Comp Sci (Student Trainee), Tuscaloosa, AL " Date: Thu, 7 Dec 1995 15:09:11 -0600 (CST) Subject: gus / scsi card conflict Hi all, I have a Gravis Ultrasound and a Ultrastore 34f vlb bus-master scsi card. The two cards coexist under windows 3.11 with no problems. Under DOS when I try to play any games that use the Sound Blaster for digital sounds it locks up my scsi card. Using megaem and tie fighter I have narrowed the problem to the SoundBlaster DMA 1 setting. The tie setup screen detects a sound blaster for digital effects and a roland for the music. The test works fine for both emulation. Now, If I change the sound blaster settings in the autoexec to something other than a DMA of 1 the tie fighter digital sounds will work until there is a simultaneous production of sounds and drive access. Then it locks up. I see from the gus manual that this setting is hard coded. Unfortunately I see no reference of a particular DMA in the Ultrastores manual. I would like to keep my ultrasound but if I can't resolve the conflict then I will have to change to a different card. Anyone with an idea? Thanks - -- D.
