Chapter 2 - Getting started

2.1 - System requirements

Please make sure that you have the following software and resources available before you begin installation.

Obviously, all the WebMail/2 components require TCP/IP, and all of them must be able to communicate with each other. If they are running on the same machine and you can communicate on the Internet, you will be fine. Please note that certain security devices such as firewalls may make it impossible for communications to or from the WebManager to reach their destination, especially in multi-server configurations. Such configurations are beyond the scope of this document. Please see your network administrator if you suspect that you may have such a problem.

2.1.1 - Web server

Any OS/2 webserver which can execute rexx CGI scripts, supports cookies, the HTTP/1.1 and CGI/1.1 protocols. WebMail/2 has been tested with the following web servers:

Web server

Apache for OS/2

www.apache.org

Web/2

Lotus Domino Go Webserver

Provided with OS/2 Warp
Server for e-business (and ACP)

InetPowerServer for OS/2

IBM EWS GoServe with
SRE-http filter

(no URL)

Xitami for OS/2

www.imatix.com(read NOTE2)

NOTE: If you use Web/2, then make sure you have the latest beta update which supports cookies and the updated CGI/1.1 features. This can be found at: Web/2 Download Page

NOTE2: Xitami is no longer supported, due to the fact that it doesn't properly support some the CGI/1.0 'Status:' feature. This includes version 2.5b4. Please contact Xitami support for further details.

2.1.2 - WebManager

This runs on OS/2 Warp 3 or better. It can run on either the web or e-mail server or independently, depending on your configuration.

In addition, WebManager requires VROBJ.DLL. This is available from: vrobj21d.zip. Make sure you have this file when you install WebManager.

2.1.3 - E-mail server

Any POP3/SMTP email server. Again, the e-mail server does not need to run under OS/2, but the supported OS/2 email servers have some advantages over other servers: WebMail/2 can dynamically migrate your OS/2 email server's user list. This way, you do not have to manually maintain two user lists. On advanced configurations you can use the New User Registration feature which allows users to apply for an email account.

Genetic POP3

Any POP3-type email server (RFC1939).

ZXMail email server will also work with Generic POP3 support, but you loose all OS/2-specific features that other OS/2 email servers have. Thats because the data files in ZXMail are in an unknown format, thus can not be loaded by WebMail/2. Please contact ZXMail support for further details.
