NVC 5.2 for OS/2 and eComStation Beta 3

This update fixes a number of problems with Beta 1, as well as enabling Internet update. Please see the known issues section for known problems with this release.

System requirements

This version supports installing NVCv5 on OS/2 Warp and eComStation machines. The following defines the minimum system requirements:
  • OS/2 Warp 4 fp 12 (fp 15 or better is recommended**) or eComStation v1.00
  • Java 1.1.8
** NVC5 for OS/2 will work on Warp 4 GA and better, but we can not guarantee all functions will work 100% on fixpacks below 12.

Features

  • WPS integration:
    • Right click on any disk/folder or file object and select Check for virus...
    • Easy access to functions and info using Desktop object menu
  • Invisibillity: When all is well, NVCv5 is invisible to the user.
  • Easy Internet update: Retreive and install any updates automatically or manually from Norman's servers
  • On access scanner: Scans files as you use them, blocking any malware
  • Task scheduler: Scan for virus at specified times
  • Logging/Messaging: Log important events and status locally or accross network
  • Advanced virus scanning engine for finding even new and unknown viruses with a minimum of false positives

These are features that could not make it into this beta, but that will be made available as soon as we get them ready. 
  • Utilities module:
    • Quarantine maintainence
    • Log console
    • Task file maintainence
    • Module info
    • Will be available shortly
  • Online help, please refer to PDF docs
  • Noninteractive on-access scanner
  • On-access scanning of bootsectors
  • Logging to System Error Log

Known issues

  • On-access scanner may crash when opening infected files, or on reinitializing. Please disable on-access scanning until update available.
  • Replication of configuration files from server to clients does yet not work.
  • It may be possible to store infected files on a Warp 4 with fp 12 or lower from an unprotected remote computer.

Changes in this release:

WPS integration:
  • fixed problem with space in filename in WPS integration
  • added splash screen when desktop opens
  • removed "Check for virus..." from desktop menu
  • active component dialog now works
Config editor:
  • display only buttons needed, no save as...
  • state of installed components was changed on saveFile, fixed!
  • changes in on-access scanner->scanning page would not notify that file was changed, fixed!
  • cosmetic fixup of Install settings->Authentication page
  • white text on white background in dialog windows, fixed!
  • cosmetic fixups in common settings->quarantine page
  • parsing of IP and IPX addresses in message routing->routing page did not work, fixed!
  • saving and restoring of addresses from message routing module did not work, fixed!
  • button text in message handling pages did not make sence, fixed!
Task editor/Scheduler:
  • cosmetic changes in task editor
  • Problem with scheduling tasks with spaces in filename fixed.
On-access scanner:
  • error popup in CClaw.c(719), rc=78382373, fixed
On-demand scanner:
  • start automatically when scheduled
  • disable error popups
  • scanning whole drives from tasks now works
  • resize window now works correctly
Internet update now enabled:
  • automatic engine and def file updates 
  • new features and fixes will be made available progressively
Note: If you are running eComStation GA, don't use the licence key you got bundled with your eCS GA. Please use the one provided by the Norman NVC for OS/2 beta programme.
