GoldED

GoldED is a full-featured mail/news reader for Fidonet and Internet. It is highly configurable, using plain text files. It supports a wide variety of messagebase formats, including JAM, Squish, *.MSG, Hudson, Goldbase, PCBoard, WildCat! and AdeptXBBS. GoldED is available for many platforms: DOS, DOS 32-bit, OS/2, Win32 and Linux. Currently GoldED runs only as textmode, but GUI versions are also planned.

The source release is currently at version 3.0.0 , but the the latest binary release is still at version 3.00.Beta5 . The source code for 3.0.0 and the in-development 4.x is released under the GPL and LGPL licenses. Binaries for 3.0.0 will appear at a later date. You can also browse the source code in a CVS tree.

The opening of the source does not mean that I'm stopping development of GoldED, but because of changed circumstances in my life, I can no longer spend as much time as I would like on development. Sometimes not even fixing the simple bugs and easy features. Additionally, I have now become economically independent of income from GoldED key sales. But most importantly, over the years I have become more and more facinated with Open Source software such as Linux, and promised myself that one day when I either became unable to develop GoldED sufficiently and/or I became financially independent of income from GoldED, I would release the sourcecode. This is the promise I'm now honoring.

Some notes about the source release:
All versions up to and including 3.00.Beta5 are shareware, but keys to the shareware versions are no longer sold. The new 4.x keys are unfortunately no longer relevant, since future versions will not include any key checker code. I'm very sorry that people paid faithfully for the 4.x key upgrades and now won't get exactly what they paid for. I could not predict back then what would happen (I got a well-paid job and don't have to worry about income from now on). I had to assume that I would need additional income for at least couple of years more, so I could not stop sales back then. If you are feeling cheated, please remember that I have specifically stated seveal times that nobody HAD to pay for an upgrade before 4.x was actually released. I changed the key system and pricing back then to simplify the price system from a complicated "pay more for each platform" to a "one key fits all" and even lowered the price and opened for easy registration/upgrade with creditcard on the internet. It was nice that this triggered a burst of upgrades to the new key and more registrations, but it was never intended (as some might suspect) as a way to squeeze more money out of users.

If you registered or upgraded recently, and now feel that this is just too much and want your money back, please reconsider. I'll be doing a lot of work to ensure that this Open Source project gets going, integrating patches and so on. In some ways it's even more work than before, but I'll be happy to do it, because GoldED will be improved faster by the patch contributions than if I had to do all the work myself. Please consider your registration or upgrade as a contribution to help me do this work, and rest assured that you will now be getting a lot more than you bargained for. If you still want your money back, I'm prepared to offer a refund. A little known fact is that I have a 90 days satisfaction guarantee, as stated in the license.doc in the 2.50 distribution (see excerpt below). I'm extending this guarantee back to the date when I started selling 4.x keys. If you still want the refund, please write to me at refund@goldware.dk and I'll arrange the refund. Please be patient. I cannot guarantee that I can give you the refund right here and now, since I have other bills to pay, and for economical reasons I'll probably want to wait until I can process all refunds in one fell swoop (and save on currency conversion costs). Please don't ask the reg.sites for the refund, they already sent the money to me. Those who paid using the ShareIt service and still haven't got their key, please ask ShareIt to refund your money NOW. I already told them a month ago to stop selling it, but apparently they kept selling it even after that :-( If you paid via ShareIt AND got your key from me, but now want the refund, please contact me at refund@goldware.dk .

3. Satisfaction Guarantee. If you are dissatisfied with any product
you buy from us under this Agreement for any reason, you may
return it at any time up to 90 days after purchase and we will
give you a full refund. Refunds will be based on the price you
paid, less shipping costs. You must contact us before returning
any product for a refund. This satisfaction guarantee does not
apply to multi-system licenses for more than 10 computers, or to
purchases of more than 10 individual copies at one time.
But again, PLEASE reconsider any thought of wanting a refund. It's such a small amount and you'll just be slowing down development and thus making me and other users less happy.

The current (OLD!) public release is GoldED 2.50. There is also a maintenance release GoldED 2.51 which fixes many bugs and introduces new features. Development of the 2.x series has been stopped in favor of 3.x and the next generation 4.x versions.
