Djado, Niger, 1997 Photograph by George Steinmetz "Ghost town of Djado
is steeped in moonlight and mystery. Once it was a station on a
slave-trading route between Niger and Libya. Surrounded by malarial
swamps, adobe dwellings are now occupied by scorpions and snakes."

(Text and photograph from"Journey to the Heart of the Sahara," March
1999, National Geographic magazine) RELATED
