Where Stromness Bay, South Georgia island, Falkland Islands
When 1998
Photographer Maria Stenzel

Elephant seals, so named for their massive bulk and distinctive noses, huddle on the beach of Stromness Bay. Male elephant seals' inflatable noses resemble elephant trunks and amplify their vocalizations.

(Photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Shackleton: Epic of Survival," November 1998, National Geographic magazine)
