"Ten years ago, when photographer Michael 'Nick' Nichols first worked in Africa's Goualougo Triangle, he was plagued by hordes of stingless bees attracted to his sweat. When he returned for this month's article and set up cameras to photograph a termite mound, he came prepared: He brought a hat with netting. 'The bees don't hurt you, but they're a nuisance,' Nick says. 'You lose them if you start walking, but when you're sitting in one place making pictures, you just endure it. And I learned early on that if you kill one of them, all of their friends come.'"
