Where Mauritania, West Africa
When 1997
Photographer George Steinmetz

Fluid curves of Saharan sand dunes greet a camel caravan in Mauritania, West Africa. Oasis towns in Mauritania were once important stops on the trade routes between the Sahel and Morocco. Caravans like this are becoming harder to find as the nomadic people of the area become increasingly sedentary.
