Photographer Edward S. Curtis

"Alexander B. Upshaw, an educated Crow [Indian], was a strong advocate for his people, fighting skillfully against government agents to protect the reservation from encroachment by settlers. His actions stirred admiration among the Crow but not among local whites. In November 1909, Upshaw was murdered in a brawl just outside the reservation."

—From the National Geographic book Edward S. Curtis: Coming to Light, 2001
