"The 30 or so Kwakiutl tribes [including this man] occupying the area around the Queen Charlotte Strait in British Columbia exploited a shore environment so rich in marine life that they were able to follow a settled village lifestyle usually enjoyed only by agriculturalists.
"Residing in their permanent villages, the Kwakiutl developed an extensive ceremonial and artistic life that included the carving of totem poles to represent clan figures."
