Where Alexandria, Egypt
When 1990
Photographer James L. Stanfield

"[A fisherman fixes his net in Alexandria, Egypt.] Years ago fishermen enjoyed big hauls near the two main mouths of the Nile. Today, with the river delivering so few nutrients and so much pollution, the fish have gone farther out to sea. So too have the fishermen."

—Text from "The Imperiled Nile Delta," January 1997, National Geographic magazine

(Photographed on assignment for, but not published in, "Ibn Battuta: Prince of Travelers," December 1991, National Geographic magazine)
