Photographer Michael K. Nichols

“With 17,000 to 22,000 wild elephants and 2,000 captive ones, India contains at least 35 percent of Asia's elephants. That any should coexist here among nearly 900 million people shows the Hindu reverence for all life—a concept known as ahimsa—and for elephants in particular.”

(Photograph taken on assignment for, but not published in, “Sita: Life of a Wild Tigress,” December 1997, National Geographic magazine)
