I find ancient civilizations very fascinating. You have to respect any culture that can wear sheets in public on a daily basis without feeling paranoid or self-conscious. I think we can be pretty certain about the mental health of the Greeks and Romans. If they were mentally ill and suffering from depression for instance, the sheets would have been black rather than white.  Secondly, if one wears white they had best be prepared to use the latest stain-fighting technology available to them at the time, and to always remain caught up with their laundry. One just really has to admire a society where everyone is able to wear sheets without being considered mentally ill. If I wear a sheet in the privacy of my own home, my family and friends begin to worry about me. It may very well be that the culture of Greece revolved around the wearing and cleaning of sheets; recently I've been made aware of a school of thought which theorizes about an ancient philosopher who went by the name of Soakrates who was very adept at removing stains of Playdough.
