This work is the property of me, Magic Emperor Ghaleon, and is
intended for public use only. Don't try to make any money off it unless
you're me, which you aren't. If you've got anything that might help me
along with this, feel free to let me know. Note on E-mails: Do not send
any file attachments unless you clearly explain what they are. I've
already received two Snow White viruses which I wasn't stupid enough to
open. I will not accept attachments with a.exe extention on them unless
they are explained carefully in the E-mail, and will block the E-mail
address of anybody who has the nerve to send me such a file without an
explanation as to what it is. I'm not pointing a finger (I don't do
that unless I know who was responsible), I'm just giving you readers
out there fair warning. I will not tolerate people sending viruses. I
understand that not all files with the .exe extention on them are
viruses, but I will scan any such files I receive just to make sure. So
here's my advice to you. Don't send me any attachments (especially
programs, those are the ones that have .exe on them), unless you
explain what they are in your E-mail. Now if you happen to be a poor
victim of viruses, don't open any .exe files without scanning them
first. Now with that out of the way, we can be nice to each other.
     Story
This is pretty much the same story as the Nintendo version of this
game, but names have been changed here. The world is in danger as the
evil magician Dragonia, (Dragonia?? It's Draygon, so where'd that come
from?), is preparing to make the land his own by combining his magical
talents with the shunned ways of technology, which are believed to be
the reason for the war that so drastically changed the world. In this
time of darkness, four magicians named Zebu, Tornel, Kensu and Asina
combined their power to create a weapon that would bring peace. Four
great swords were made, and each was possessed of one of the four
elemental powers of Wind, Fire, Water and Thunder, (what happened to
Earth?) When joined, they would form the mighty Crystalis blade, (I
suppose there's my answer, since Crystal is an element of Earth). But
before a worthy bearer could be found for the weapon, the so-called
Emperor Dragonia heard of the four swords and the powers they wielded.
Knowing that if combined the weapons could destroy him, he called the
swords to him and tried to destroy them. However, he found that they
were too well made, and in rage, he hurled them across the land,
believing that they would never be found again. The four wizards who
created the swords despaired, believing all hope to be lost. But legend
said that a pair of young heroes had been sealed in cryogenic stasis
after the last war, but might awaken to challenge Dragonia's rule.
Again, they combined their energies to bring the chosen ones to life.
But only one, (you), appeared. The other one's fate was as yet unknown.
Still, with one of the chosen awake and alert, there was hope. You are
the last hope for a world in danger. You must find your companion and
the four swords. Only then can you vanquish the evil Emperor!
Swords and their Accessories, The locations of the Weapons
     The Swords
Sword of Wind: This is the weakest of the four and the easiest to
get. It is found in the town of Leaf.
Sword of Fire: This is the next weakest but is a very good weapon. As
can be expected it is harder to get. It's located in the village of
Oak.
Sword of Water: This is the next most powerful aside from thunder. It
is rather difficult to acquire. It is located in a treasure chest in
the Waterfall Caverns east of Portoa.
Sword of Thunder: This is the second most powerful sword in the game.
Located in the Cave of Styx, it has a very useful ability to break iron
barriers once the Ball of Thunder is located. Once the Storm Bracelet
is located, it can destroy everything onscreen.
Sword of Crystalis: This is the most powerful weapon in the game. It is
made by combining the swords of Wind, Fire, Water and Thunder. It's the
most difficult to get, because unlike the NES version of this game
where you get it before fighting your final battle against Dyna, ya
gotta fight Dyna before ya can get it.
     The Accessories
Each of the swords, (with the one exception of Crystalis), has two
powerful items that go with it. Below are the names and effects of
these items. I'm even gonna make a guess as to the locations of the
later ones.
Ball of Wind: Located in the Sealed Cave, this item will allow the Wind
Sword to power up one more level. This will allow you to destroy rock
walls. Its attack is rather stronger also.
Tornado Bracelet: Located in MT. Sabre's southern peak, the Tornado
Bracelet boosts the Wind Sword's power to its maximum level of three.
This will call a small tornado onscreen, destroying multiple enemies.
Note on level three sword attacks: All four swords' level three attacks
consume a certain amount of your MP (magic points). Once your MP is
gone or low you can't use the level three power. The tornado will use
up 8 MP.
Ball of Fire: This item is located in the poisonous forest. When
equipped, it will power up the Fire sword. It will shoot a wave of fire
forward a short distance and can damage or destroy multiple enemies.
Can also destroy the ice walls the Ball of Wind cannot.
Flame Bracelet: Located in MT. Sabre's northern peak, this item allows
you to power up your Fire Sword to level three. This shoots an intense
wave of fire forward that has longer range than level two. This attack
consumes 16 MP, so be careful about using it.
Ball of Water: Given to you by the guardian of the cave near Portoa
after you acquire the Water Sword. When you power up the Water Sword to
level two, you can create ice paths across deep water.
Blizzard Bracelet: Located in the town of Amazon, the Blizzard Bracelet
shoots out a wave of snowflakes when you power up your sword of water
to level three. It will expand and retract several times, going out a
little farther with each expansion. It does this about three or so
times before fading. It can damage multiple targets. Consumes 16 MP, so
be careful.
Ball of Thunder: This weapon will shoot a wave of electricity forward a
ways, damaging enemies and destroying iron barriers. I believe it is
located in the Fortress of Goa.
Storm Bracelet: Located in the Fortress of Goa, this levels the Thunder
Sword up to three. At level three, the Thunder Sword calls a
thunderstorm onscreen, which will destroy or damage all enemies in the
area. This attack will drain 40 MP, so you really wanna be careful!
     Controls
A button: use selected item/magic, open chests, talk to villagers, make
selections in menus.
B button: Cancel commands on menu, skip conversations, attack with
selected sword. Hold down the button for about a second to power up
your sword to level one, and about a second more for levels two and
three once you get the proper items.
D-pad: move around on the world map or move cursor in menu.
Select: Brings up main menu.
Start: brings up the system menu where you can save your game, load
another saved game or delete a saved game.
     Stats and Status Alements
Here's the section for new RPG players out there. It'll explain a bit
about what your stat abbreviations stand for, as well as the various
status conditions that can affect you.
Stats
HP: Hit Points. Hit Points measure your life energy. When you get hit,
some HP is taken away. When your HP reach zero, you die.
Defense: Defense rates the damage you take from enemies. The higher it
is the less damage you will take. This increases naturally but it's
still crucial to equip new armors each time you come to a new area. THe
natural increase with each level-up isn't much
Attack: Attack Power. This rates the damage you inflict upon enemies.
The higher your Attack the more damage your sword does. This increases
naturally but is helped along by the sword you happen to be using.
MP: Magic Points: Like HP, MP measures another very important aspect in
RPG's, magic. The higher your current MP, the more times you can use a
spell. Each spell takes up a certain amount of your MP. When your MP
hits zero or becomes too low to cast a spell, you can't use that spell.
Note: you may not be able to use one spell, but you may still be able
to cast another spell that consumes less MP than you have.
     Status Conditions
Here's where you get to learn about those other important aspects of
RPG's, status ailments. I have never seen an RPG that didn't have
enemies that could inflict more than just physical damage to you, with
one exception, the first Dragon Warrior. Here's where this game's
status ailments can be discussed.
Normal: Your status is normal.
Poison: When you are poisoned, your HP decreases with every second and
more every step. If it is not cured quickly enough it can kill you.
Cure with Antidote Herbs or Recover magic.
Paralysis: Your body becomes paralyzed. You can't move or use your
weapons. You can use magic. Cure with Recover spell or Lysis plant.
Stone: You become a statue and can't move or attack. Quickly cure with
Recover spell.
Curse: This is a condition not encountered till near the end of the
game, but it's best that ya know of it now to prepare for it. When you
are cursed, you will become a pink jelly. You can't attack or use
magic, but can use items. Quickly, (and I do mean quickly), cure with
the fruit of Repun, as this condition lasts until either you cure it or
you die.
     GBC/NES Differences
The main difference between the NES and GBC versions of this game is
the music. You don't hear any of the music or sound effects from the
NES version here. You will however, not be disappointed if you're a
true fan like me. I found the music in this game to be quite cool,
especially the boss theme, whose low pitch conveys an air of menace
that can make the battle experience even more exciting. I think the
addition of digitized human speech for such situations as when you
acquire a sword was kinda neat. Like when you acquire the Sword of
Wind, a voice will actually say, "Sword of Wind." Cool, huh?
Another difference is how you acquire certain items. In the NES
version you buy the Alarm Flute at a shop in Leaf. Here' you collect it
from a cave.
Also, here the menu screen is a bit more organized. There's actually
a separate section for Swords, Armor and Shields, Items and Magic.
Unfortunately, there's no Accessories section for such items as the Gas
Mask and Rabbit boots, which makes it difficult to have enough healing
supplies. Oh well.. At least it's not all thrown around like in the NES
version.
Most noticeable is the different dialogue. There's some dialogue in
this version that wasn't present in the NES version, and lines from the
NES version have been changed here. It still gets the job done well,
though, so don't gripe!
     Magic
Here, I'll talk about the magic you will learn in this game. Here's
how each spell listing will look.
Name: So what does this do?
Learned From: Where did you learn that?
MP Cost: How much is this gonna drain off my magic meter?
Effect: What does it do?
Note: I'm using the MP cost numbers from the NES version. I think these
are accurate however. If someone can tell me otherwise I'd appreciate
the correct info.
Name: Refresh
Learned From: Zebu
MP Cost: 2
Effect: Heals small amounts of HP. This is annoying, as the higher your
HP gets the more often you'll need to use this spell.
Name: Telepathy
Learned From: Tornel
MP Cost: 8
Effect: Allows you to confer with the Wisemen at any time or to
communicate with the people of Oak.
Name: Teleport
Learned From: Tornel
MP Cost: 20
Effect: Instantly travel to any town you've visited, exactly like Warp
Boots.
Name: Paralysis
Learned From: Tornel
MP Cost: 4
Effect: Paralyzes enemies or puts townspeople to sleep temporarily
Name: Recover
Learned From: Asina
MP Cost: 24
Effect: Cures all status alements except Curse.
Name: Barrier
Learned From: Asina
MP Cost: 1 per second of use
Effect: Protects against most forms of attack.
Name: Change
Learned From: Kensu
MP Cost: 20
Effect: Allows you to change into four different people.
Name: Flight
Learned From: Kensu
MP Cost: 1 per second of use
Effect: Allows you to fly.
     Items
Here, I'll talk about the various items in the game.
Alarm Flute: Awakens sleeping people.
Flute of Lime: Frees NPCs who have been turned to stone.
Fruit of Lime: Cures you if you are turned to stone.
Antidote Herb: Cures poison
Medical Herb: Heals some HP. Keep some handy in case MP runs low.
Fruit of Repun: Cures Curse
Lysis Plant: Cures Paralysis
Warp Boots: Instantly travel to any town you've visited.
Opal Statue: Saves progress in Dungeons. In the NES version, if you had
one equipped it would automatically refill your HP and MP when
your life hit 0, even in boss fights.
Magic Ring: Completely restores MP.
Fruit of Power: Restores small amounts of MP.
Dio's Pendant: Slowly regenerates MP.
Psycho Armor: Slowly regenerates life. Find an area with no enemies,
equip Psycho Armor and Dio's pendant and stand there to get
completely healed.
Warrior Ring: Allows you to fire level 1 blasts from your sword without
charging it up.
Walkthrough
     The Valley of the Wind
     Recommended Level: 1-5
This is a pretty short area with two main objectives, each with a
reward upon completion. First you need to get the windmill working, for
which your reward will be the Refresh spell. The second goal is to
acquire the Ball of Wind and defeat the Vampire, for which you'll be
rewarded with the Rabbit Boots. Here's how to do those things.
     The Town of Leaf
Once you name your hero whatever you want, you will be shown standing
in your little sleep deal. Exit it and you're emergence will shatter a
rock wall and scare off a civilian from the nearby town. SO, head into
the town. This village is the village of Leaf. If you talk to the guy
who ran away when you emerged, he will be embarrassed and apologize to
you. He won't give you anything, but that doesn't matter. Head to the
house in the upper-right corner of town. Talk to the man there to get
$100 (woohoo)! Hold onto it for right now. Now go to the upper-left
corner of town and enter the house. This is the house of Tamalic, Elder
of Leaf and keeper of the Sword of Wind! Talk to him to receive the
first of the four swords.
     Wind Valley Overworld
I recommend taking time to explore the overworld around Leaf so you
can learn where everything is. This is also a good time to level up a
few levels. When leveling up, I like to find the Windmill Cave and walk
in and out of the cave and kill the monsters at the entrance over and
over again. This is also a good way to make money. I recommend getting
about $200 first so you can then buy a Tanned Hide and Caripace Shield.
That'll hold you for a while. Use any money left over to buy herbs,
both Medical and Antidote. You'll need the Antidotes once you get to
the Sealed Cave. When you've outfitted yourself and bought any items
you want, head NW of Leaf to find the cave of the wiseman Zebu.
     Zebu's Cave
Just talk to the guy and he will tell you that he and his fellows
awoke you to oppose Dragonia. He will then give you your first task,
which is to get the Windmill working.
Head to the blue caverns and search them thurroughly for the Alarm
Flute. Now head back to the Windmill Cave where I told you to level up
at. Inside there are no monsters, only a sleeping man. Play the Alarm
Flute to wake him. Go to the Items menu and select the flute. Exit the
Items menu and press A to play the flute. You must be right next to the
guard to wake him. When he wakes he will thank you and tell you that he
is too weak to start the windmill. He will give you the key, adding as
an afterthought that as soon as the feeling in his legs returns he'll
be heading back to Leaf.
Work your way through the cave and enter the Windmill. Select the key
from your Items menu and use it to start the mill. Leave the windmill
to see a new cave entrance blow open. Zebu will appear and tell you to
meet him at his cave to get your reward.
     The Sealed Cave
     Recommended level: 5-7
Actually, you can come here at a lower level. I only had such high
levels because I was trying to make loads o' money. Also note: you do
not need to go to Zebu's cave. You can work your way to the Sealed Cave
and Zebu will appear to you before you enter. He will teach you the
magic of Refresh! From this point on, herbs will not be quite as
important, but of course you should still hold some in your inventory
so that you have a means to heal if you run out of MP.
First off, why'd they use the title screen music for this cave? This
cave has two breakable walls. To tell whether or not a wall can be
broken down with the Ball of Wind, hit the wall with your sword
normally. If it makes noise it can be broken. Search the cave to find
the Ball of Wind and a pair of Warp Boots. I don't remember if that's
all the treasure in this cave. Once you've found everything, (and I
believe you find the Warp Boots after breaking down one of the walls),
you will be able to proceed to the boss's lair, which is behind that
other breakable wwall. Note: In this version, the boss actually has a
little something to say before the fight. He tells you that there is a
line between bravery and stupidity, and that you have crossed it by
coming here. Well, we'll see who's stupider, him or you!
     Boss: Vampire
There couldn't be an easier boss. He releases two bats then teleports
rapidly around the room. He can't really hurt you unless you touch
either him or his bats. Also, don't kill his bats, because he'll just
shoot out two more. Just thrash him when he comes close and you should
have no trouble.
After you defeat the Vampire, Zebu will appear and congratulate you.
He will then give you the Rabbit Boots. OK, now, in my opinion the
usefulness of this item is outweighed slightly by the fact that, as I
may have mentioned earlier, they didn't add an accessories section for
items like this. It'd make it easier to stock up on healing supplies.
Anyway, these boots will allow you to jump while you're wearing them.
The Town of Brynmaer and the Onyx statue
     Recommended level: 6-7
From here on out the enemies get stronger, so hopefully your levels
are high and you have the funds to buy stronger armor. Believe me,
you're gonna need it!
To prevent mishaps, I advise you to save and then load the game once
you leave the Sealed Cave. This will start you right outside your next
destination, the town of Brynmaer. I advise this because, like the
Dragon Warrior games, you lose money when you die. I remember my first
time through the Sealed Cave. I'd raked in quite a fair amount of dough
and then got killed while trying to find the next town. Let's just say
that I had maybe 50 gold left, maybe a bit more, and Brynmaer's prices
are a hell of a lot more than that, let me tell you! Anyway, buy
whatever armor and shield you can afford, then talk to everyone. One
man will ask for his Onyx Statue, which he dropped by the river. So,
Find the river and follow it to a bridge. Cross it and search the
island to find a chest with the statue inside. Try not to take too long
to find it, because the enemies here do lots of damage and can easily
put an end to your quest.
Once you find the statue, return to Brynmaer via either walking or
Warp Boots, (the latter should only be done if you are very weak), and
give Akahana the statue to receive the Gas Mask, which we'll be needing
shortly. Then head generally north, past the Sealed Cave, and you'll
eventually come to the Training Center for warriors. Here, you'll meet
the second of the four wisemen, Tornel, as well as Stom, a warrior who
will play an important part in your adventure later. Tornel will
instruct you to defeat Stom by pushing him up against the back wall
with your sword. This is rather tough to do, since you have to keep
pressing the B button reeally fast. Don't let up, no matter how tired
your finger gets, or you willll be defeated. It may take several tries
to do it, but once you do you'll learn the Telepathy spell, which will
allow you to communicate with the wisemen anytime you need. It will
also allow you to communicate with animals you find in towns, as well
as the telepathic people of Oak. So now that's where we need to go.
Head back to Brynmaer to stay at the inn or stock up on supplies if
needed, and from Brynmaer head east, using the rabbit boots to jump
over poisoned ground. Eventually you'll come to the Poisonous
Swamp/forest, which has really cool music. Before entering, equip
yourself with the Gas Mask or you will die.
The Poison Forest and the Giant Insect
     Recommended level: 7+
Work your way through the forest, killing whatever monsters you can,
until you reach the Dwarven village of Oak. The people are very
inhospitable toward humans, but that will soon change. There is only
one house that is not being blocked by a villager. Enter it and a woman
will beg you to rescue her lost child, who went into the forest. So now
head out and search the forest to find the boy. Talk with him and then
take him back to his mother. She'll thank you and give you the Insect
Flute. The people will also warm up to you a bit. Stay at their inn and
buy some Fruits of Power if you can afford, then head onto the Elder's
house. He'll tell you of a creature that has been terrorizing the
people of Oak for many years and give you the second sword, the Sword
of Fire!
Now head out of Oak and go to the section of the forest with the
black wall. Here, equip and play your Insect Flute. Holy crap!
     Boss: Swamp Bug
Wow! This guy is really tough if you don't know what you're doing!
Use the Fire Sword and hit his face when he comes close. Don't stay in
one place! If you do he'll just hover above you and drop fireballs on
you. What I did is this: I ran back and forth, stopping just long
enough to charge up my sword, then when he came close I released the
bolt. This is fairly affective, but he can still hurt you. Charge up
your weapon and hit him, and heal when you get low on life. I couldn't
beat this guy below level 7, but that doesn't mean you can't.
After the battle open the chest to receive the Ball of Fire. One of
the wisemen, (Tornel I believe), contacts you telepathically then and
tells you to go to Mount Sabre South to retrieve the Tornado Bracelet.
First though, you'll probably want to stay at the inn. I know I had to
after that grueling battle.
     MT. Saber South
     Recommended Level: 7+
From the village of Oak, head back to Brynmaer, then head south to a
set of caves. This is MT. Sabre South. Note: I can't really guide you
through this area because I hardly knew where I was going myself.
Actually, I was too busy trying to stay alive to pay much attention.
Besides, this place is a maze of caverns, some of which lead back to
the exit, so be careful. The enemies here are also really nasty, so
watch yourself. Search around, and bring some Antidote Herbs. The
dragon enemies here are poisonous. Also, beware of the Ground Zombies
as I like to call them. They're zombies that pop up out of the ground
and do major damage. They do give a lot of EXP though, so if you can
manage to slay one that's good. You'll have to switch swords a lot
here, since some of the walls are ice and some rock I believe. The
Tornado Bracelet is in a chest somewhere here. Once you find it (you
may have to traverse ice slides with the rabbit boots), continue
searching the caves till you locate Tornel, who will reward you with
the Teleport spell. He'll then tell you that Leaf is in danger and that
you should head back there. I'd recommend using either Warp Boots or
the Teleport spell, depending on if you have the magic.
Trouble in Leaf and MT. Sabre North
     Recommended Level: 10+
In Leaf, you'll notice an astonishing lack of people. Go into the
barn attached to the house of Tamalic, who gave you the Sword of Wind.
In here you'll find a rabbit, who'll tell you that Dragonia's men came
and abducted the people. Apparently, the empire forced the people into
a flying fortress and took them to MT. Sabre North. So guess what?
That's where we're going next!
     MT. Sabre North
From Leaf, warp to Brynmaer, (stopping there to use the Inn), and
then head east toward the swamp. Head north past the swamp to find
Zebu. Seeing that you have Teleport, Zebu will bring down the rock wall
blocking your way. Now enter MT. Sabre North. Hope you're ready.
Like the last area, this one's pretty confusing. You'll want to keep
Antidotes handy, as well as Fruits of Power if you can carry any. Work
your way through the caves, being mindful of the enemies and the fact
that this place is confusing as hell. You'll find the Jail Key in one
of the caves, and on the mountainside itself you'll encounter a boss.
     Boss: General Kelbesque
This guy shouldn't be super tough. What I did was this: I charged up
my sword before I actually walked onscreen with him, then released it
for a free shot. Note: Unlike the NES version of this game, Kelbesque
doesn't give you his pre-battle trash talk. Level 3 attacks work fine
on this guy, but keep in mind that A: you need to heal, and B: the
tornado consumes 8 MP, which goes back to the first thing. Kelbesque
stomps the ground several times, generating a shockwave and sending
boulders flying. Avoid them, as they hurt a lot. Level 7 or 9 is what I
advise for this fight. Keep attacking, and yes, you can use level 1
shots if you want to save MP, but don't try to attack normally if you
can help it. That requires you to get in close, and I wouldn't advise
that against this guy.
After you defeat the general in whatever way seems best, he'll say
his little spiel about how you've only seen a small sample of his true
power. Then he runs away like the coward that he is. Don't worry
though, next time you'll really get to kick his ass!
Anyway, after you defeat Kelbesque, use the Jail Key on the dor he
was guarding to free the remaining people. Continue on and Tornel will
contact you telepathically, teaching you the Paralysis spell. Now leave
the mountains and you'll be in a new area. Save, then reload the game
if you don't want to risk getting lost and killed. Once again it's time
to upgrade your armor.
     The Town of Portoa
     Recommended level: 10+
This town has a big mystery in it. Your goal? To unravel it of
course. I had a lot of trouble with this part. You're supposed to use
Paralysis on the guard guarding the center door of the castle and enter
to see the queen. For some reason, I paralyzed the guard but found the
door closed. Somehow I managed to get into the servants' quarters and
from there into the queen's chambers, but I don't remember how I did
it. Anyway, once you do manage to see her, the queen will tell you that
she'll help you if you can unravel the mystery of the town. Now leave
the castle and head into the NE part of town, where the Fortune
Teller's shop is. She says she senses adventure in your future, so go
back to the queen. She'll doubt your abilities now. This time, she'll
leave the throne room via a back door. A guard may try to prevent you
from following, but paralyze him and follow the queen. You'll see that
she's headed for the Fortune Teller's shop. Once you enter, (assuming
you were able to follow her), she'll see that you've learned her secret
and become someone else. She is neither a Fortune Teller nor a Queen,
but the third of the four wizards who revived you. Her name is Asina,
and as a reward for discovering her true identity she'll give you the
Flute of Lime. She also says that Dragonia, being the bastard that he
is, (although she doesn't add that), kidnapped the true queen in an
attempt to break the spirit of the townspeople. Asina tells you that
the queen is in the Waterfall Cave. So now, that's your destination.
     Waterfall Cave
     Recommended Level: 11+
This is a pretty confusing area full of nasty beasties! Just work
your way through it to the place where you see two people who have been
turned to stone. Use the Flute of Lime to cure them. They are the true
Queen of Portoa and her servant. They'll thank you and leave. You're
not done yet, though. Keep moving and you'll see another stoned person.
Near him is a Flute of Lime. Use this on him to reveal Akahana, who
will give you the Shield Ring, which raises the defense power of
whatever shield you're currently wearing. Now there's one final thing
to do. There's a sword in this cave, so search the cave until you find
it, taking time off to get out and recover. The sword you find is the
Sword of Water! So now let's get outta here!
After getting the Sword of Water, head back to Portoa to heal up and
replenish supplies. Then head southwest from Portoa to a cave. Inside,
talk to the man. Since you have the Water Sword he will give you the
Ball of Water. Once you've got it, equip it and use it on the water to
create an Ice Bridge! Follow it into the caves to find Asina, who'll
teach you the Recover spell!
