II. Introduction
****************

Dragon Warrior IV, known as Dragon Quest IV in Japan, was the fourth
(obviously) in the very popular series. It was the last one made for the
NES, and, unfortunately the last one to come out in America for a very long
time. It wasn't until Dragon Warrior Monsters came out in 2000 that a new
Dragon Quest game was imported to the US. Number four was the first in a new
trilogy of Dragon Warrior games, and the first in the series not dealing with
the legendary Erdrick. Sadly, the other two games in this series, Dragon
Quest 5 and 6, were never released over here. Now that the background is
over, lets start the Walkthrough!

III. Walkthrough
****************

The first thing to do in the game is to name your character and pick the
gender. However, you won't meet the hero for quite some time, until the
fifth chapter! Before you can meet him/her, you must complete the first four
chapters that introduce the other main characters.

*****************************
Chapter 1 - The Royal Soldier
*****************************

The first chapter stars Ragnar, a soldier in the Kingdom of Burland. The
children of nearby Izmit Village have been disappearing lately, and the
Burland soldiers have been ordered to find them. Talk to everyone in Burland
to gain information, paying especial attention to Flora, the woman who lost
her husband. It's important to note that, unlike the previous Dragon
Warriors, you can open the plain wooden doors without a key. Only the doors
with a mark on it require a key to open, so when you are exploring the towns,
make sure you don't forget to open all of the doors possible. Before heading
to Izmit, it would be a good idea to spend some time around town building up
your levels and gold. When you feel you are strong enough (level 3-4 maybe),
go to the cave nearby the castle.

The cave is simple, and should give no hardships. Once through, go to Izmit
Village, and talk to everyone here. The children disappeared while playing
with shoes, hm? Looks like you will have to find some footwear to continue.
Talk to the man in the jail. His name is Alex. Wasn't that the name of
Flora's missing husband? Go back to Burland, tell Flora, and then take her
to her husband in Izmit. Alex regains his memory, and gives you a big clue.
Do what he says, and walk four spaces south and four spaces east of the sign
post to find the children's playing area. Fall down the well, and a voice
will guide you through the maze to the Flying Shoes. If you follow exactly
what the voice tells you, you will encounter no enemies. But that wouldn't
be any fun! Make sure to explore the entire well, despite the enemy attacks
and collect the treasure chests. Also, you will find the most important
thing in the well (except for the shoes, of course), Healie the Healer! He's
the blue jellyfish looking thing. Although he is a monster, he has dreams of
eventually becoming a human, and hopes hanging out with people will help him
achieve this goal. Talk to him and he will ask to join you. Make sure you
say Yes, because he is very, very helpful. After recruiting Healie, leave
the well. Although you can now go to the tower in the middle of the lake, it
would be a good idea to train for a while before continuing your quest.

Explore the tower, making sure that Healie doesn't die. Also, make sure you
pick up the Sword of Malice, which will make the battle with the tower's boss
a lot easier. Finally, meet the boss, Saro's Shadow and the Giant Eyeball.

The first thing you should do is kill the Giant Eyeball. This will decrease
the number of monsters attacking you. After a few hits, the eyeball's
expression will change, and it will start doing critical hits, twice a round!
Once this happens, try to kill it immediately before it kills either you or
Healie. Once the eyeball is gone, concentrate on Saro's Shadow. This
shouldn't be too hard if you picked up the Sword of Malice. Healie will heal
you when it is necessary. After the boss is dead, you will find out that the
children were kidnapped while the monsters were searching for the legendary
hero. after taking the children home, return to Burland (don't worry, there
aren't any more monsters) and talk to the king. Ragnar will ask if he can
leave to search for the Hero, and the King will give him a parting gift of
experience points. Chapter one is done!

Chapter 2: Princess Alena's Adventure
*************************************

This chapter starts Alena, the tomboy princess of Santeem. It seems that she
wants to go on a journey to test her strength, but her father, of course,
forbids it. Walk around the castle, searching pots and drawers for goods.
If you go to Alena's room, a man will be repairing the wall, where she broke
it before. The repairman won't finish for a while, so talk to everyone,
including Alena's tutor, Brey, and Cristo. The guards won't let you out the
front door, so it looks like Alena will have to sneak out. Once the worker
finishes repairing the wall, go to Alena's room and search the wall's patch.
Since it was just made out of cheap wood, kick it down, and jump to freedom.
When you leave the castle, Cristo and Brey will come, and seeing that they
can not dissuade Alena from her goal, decide to join
her. Go right next to the castle, to the town of Surene.

When you reach Surene, spend some time around the town building up levels and
gaining gold. There is a locked door in the big building, but you won't be
able to open it until the fifth chapter. When you have gone up a few levels,
go north and east to the town of Tempe.

A monster that demands a sacrifice is attacking Tempe. Talk to the cleric in
the house of healing and volunteer to pose as the sacrifice. The monster is
not that hard, and after you kill it, you will be able to go past the town to
the north, and reach the town of Frenor. In this town, people are talking
about the princess of Santeem staying at the inn. Since that's supposed to
be Alena, obviously something weird is going on. However, when you go
upstairs to see your imposter, a gang will kidnap her, and demand the Golden
Bracelet.

Alena and company decide to help her, even if she is a fake, and go south, to
a cave. The cave is not confusing, so just go through it until you reach the
bracelet. Use the Outside spell and then when it turns night, return to
Frenor, and meet the kidnappers in the graveyard. Once she is released, the
rescued "princess" will admit that she is only an actress, but will give you
the Thief's Key in gratitude. Yippee! Now you can open all of the locked
wooden doors.

Now that this side quest is done, travel to the large desert. Next to the
small oasis, a bazaar has been set up. Talk to the people, and buy what you
can. Make sure you search the pots in the area. While your are there, a
Santeem soldier will see you, and tell you that something has happened to
Alena's father, the King. Travel back to Santeem (use a Wing, or the Return
spell. Don't walk all the way back there unless you have nothing better to
do!). The king has lost his voice, and needs a cure. Go back to Alena's
room, and jump out of the hole. The room at the back of the castle that you
could not open before (before it was locked) is now accessible with the
Thieve's Key. Talk to the old man there, and then talk to the poet in
Surene. The poet says that he bought some Birdsong Nectar at the desert
Bazaar, which should be able to cure the king. However, the bazaar is sold
out, and you must travel to the Birdsong Tower to find some more.

Travel up the tower, returning to the inn if you are losing. At the top, you
will find two elves, which will run at the sight of you. Luckily, they will
leave the Birdsong Nectar behind. Pick it up, and exit the tower. Return to
Santeem, and give the nectar to the King. He tells everyone that he has been
having strange and ominous dreams, but will give permission to Alena to go on
her journey while he ponders their meaning.

You may have encountered it before, but if you haven't, look for a small
shrine with a Travler's door inside. The soldier guarding it will now allow
you to pass, and you can go to Endor. If you have talked to everyone in the
other towns (which you should always do), you have heard that there is a
fighting tournament being held in this Kingdom. It's the perfect place for a
young princess to test her skills. However, before doing something serious
like that, go to the casino and have some fun! The casino only accepts coins
(which cost 20 gold each), and you can never refund the coins for gold, only
for items, but if you feel lucky, go ahead and spend some money. There are
some VERY useful items for sale as prizes. These include the Wizard's Ring
(for 500 coins), which replenish MP, the Meteorite Armband (for 4,000 coins)
which doubles the wearer's speed, The Mirror of Ra (for 2500 coins), the
Staff of Jubilation (for 1,000 coins), and the Metal Babble Shield (for
50,000 coins). The Meteorite Armband is especially good, allowing your
character's to go before an enemy. The Metal Babble Shield is the strongest
shield in the game, but I'm sure you noticed the hefty price, and only four
characters (Cristo, Brey, Nara, and Mara) can equip it. The games include
slot machines, poker, and a monster-fighting ring (like the ones in Dragon
Warrior 3). If you are playing DW4 on an Emulator (not something I endorse,
of course), not on the actual NES, there is a very easy way to get all of
these items quickly. Simply win one poker game, and then save your state.
Play the double or nothing game and if you win, save your state again and
continue. If you lose, just reload and try again. If you have enough
patience, you will be able to win hundreds of thousands of coins in a very
short time. Sure it's unethical (it's downright cheating!) but who wants to
pass up a chance at making your characters invincible so early in the game?!

When you talk to the king of Endor, you will find out that, in order to find
a champion, he has offered his daughter's hand in marriage to the winner.
Unfortunately, he now regrets it, since it appears that the mysterious
NecroSaro is going to win. (Remember Saro's Shadow in Chapter One? Hmmm,
maybe there's a connection.....) The king and princess will ask you to try
and win, since if another girl wins, the Princess will be free of the
obligation. Of course you are going to have to. Alena will have to fight
the tournament by herself, so make sure she is equipped with the best armor
and weapons (make sure to buy the Iron Claw in the coliseum). When you're
ready to fight, make sure to fill all of the empty spaces in Alena's
inventory with Medical Herbs. Enter the coliseum, and get ready to fight.
You will have to fight five enemies. The game will give you the option of
using medical herbs between matches. Don't worry, you will not have to fight
NecroSaro, so don't worry about using up all your herbs before you fight him.
The first time I played, I thought I would have to, so I went through the
whole tournament using only the bear minimum of herbs needed to live!
Anyways, the first four enemies should be nothing special. The fifth
challenger, however, might provide a little bit of trouble. The yeti-like
monster will split into four images, and you have to decide which one to
attack. Whether you hit the right one or not, the three illusionary beasts
will disappear, and the real one will split into four more images. The good
thing about this battle is that only the real monster attacks.
The three fake ones can prevent you from hurting him, but can not actually
harm you. Just keep attacking, and you will eventually kill it. (I'm not
sure if there is any trick to being able to tell which image is the real one.
If anyone knows of any special strategy, let me know!) After the five
fighters, Alena is supposed to fight NecrSaro. However, he seems to have
vanished, so Alena is declared the winner. Before you can celebrate your
victory, though, a soldier will run in and tell you to return to Santeem
Castle before dying. Return won't work at this point (damn it!), so you will
have to walk it. But don't worry, you won't be attacked on the way. When
you get back, you will find that the entire population of the castle (but not
of the town next to it) has mysteriously vanished. After exploring the
castle for people, leave, and the chapter will come to an end.

Chapter 3: Taloon the Arms Merchant
***********************************

The third chapter stars Taloon, a poor merchant who dreams of becoming the
best arms merchant in the world. (In Japan, his name is Torneco, and he is
the star of several Dragon Quest Spin-off games, the latest coming out on the
Playstation. So, if I accidentally write his Japanese name somewhere in this
FAQ, you'll know whom I'm talking about.)

Everyday, Taloon goes to work in the town weapon shop, with a lunch made by
his wife. The first part of the chapter entails this. Every morning, wake
up and talk to your wife. Go outside and talk to the old man who lives North
of Taloon's house, and push him to the House of Healing for a few pieces of
gold. You will also learn about the old man's son, which you should pay
attention to. If you want to, you can sell your lunch for a little bit of
extra money as well. When you go to work, it is important to realize that
you are being paid on commission (meaning your pay depends on how much you
sell) so it would not be in your best interest to tell the customers that its
not really a weapons shop. When customers come in, answer yes to the first
two questions. When they ask you if a product costs an X amount of money
(which it does), you can answer "Yes" or "No". If you say yes, they will buy
it, unless they either don't have enough money or have too many items. If
you say no, they will either ask if the price went up or down. If you tell
them that the price went up, they may purchase it anyways, but most likely
will decide not to buy anything. Knowing this, it's up to you to decide
whether or not to risk a sale to get a few extra gold pieces. Once in a
while, a customer will ask you if you want to buy one of their weapons. They
will sell Copper Swords, Boomerangs, Morning Stars, and, if you're very
lucky, Swords of Malice. Tell them yes, since it is the shop's money, not
yours that you are spending. If they sell you an item that is not normally
on sale at the store, that item will be put up for sale. All of these extra
items sell for more than the normal stock, but remember you only have the
number of a specific weapon that you purchased. So if you only bought one
boomerang, once that is sold, that item will not be listed anymore unless you
buy another one. You can never run out of Clubs, Copper Swords, or Thorn
Whips, though.

Spend a few days repeating this process, until you have enough money to
properly arm yourself. Talk to the innkeeper to learn about the Iron Safe,
and, once you are sufficiently equipped, travel north to the cave that holds
it. This cave is easy, with a couple of puzzles. In the room with the large
boulder that follows you, get it to fill in the holes at the bottom part of
that room, then walk over it to reach a staircase. When you get to the room
with the Iron Safe, you will discover a problem. When you remove the Safe,
the door will close, sealing you in. To escape, you will have to put the
Safe back down. Since you don't want to leave it behind, you will have to
find away to get it and escape. When you first down the stairs that led to
the area with the Safe room, you should have noticed several boulders that
Taloon could move. Push one of them into the room with the Safe, then open
the chest. Push the boulder onto the switch, and the door will open, and
allow you to get out. The safe will prevent you from losing half of your
gold when you die. Now that Taloon has the safe, his real journey can begin.
Before leaving, you might want to spend a while working in the shop if you
need more gold or equipment. Finally leave Lakanaba and try to fulfil
Taloon's dreams.

As you go south, you will soon encounter a small town. While in this town,
do not buy anything, no matter how good the deal sounds. You will be
disappointed. In this town, there is an architect named da Gardi, who says
he is trapped in the village. Remember him for later. If you try to leave,
you will soon discover a small problem. You can't leave! To get out, you
have to talk to the leader of the town, and go to sleep when he asks. When
you wake up, the town has vanished! Since you can't do anything else here,
continue south until you reach Bonmalmo. In this kingdom, there is talk of
war. The king, in order to get its wealth, is about to invade Endor. Talk
to everyone in = town. The town is low on armor, and there is a man in the
castle who buys it for a high price. If you ever have any extra armor, sell
it here. In the castle (during the day) talk to the prince in his room.
He'll tell you to meet him behind the weapons shop at night. Go there like
he says and talk to him. He'll give you a letter, to give to the Princess of
Endor, but you can't get there because the bridge is out. The architect in
Foxville can probably help, but you need to be able to get him out of the
fox's town. Go now to the dungeon of Bonmalo, avoiding all of the guards,
and talk to the prisoners. One of them is actually old Tom's son from
Lakanaba. Give him a Wing of Wyvern and help him escape. Now, return back
to Lakanaba yourself and go talk to him behind Tom's house. Borrow his dog,
and take it to Foxville. If you talk to the leader, the dog will reveal the
fox's true identity, and the foxes will allow da Gardi to escape. They'll
also give you a Full Plate Armor, which you can sell if you want. Now, go
back to Bonmalmo and talk to the king. When you leave the castle, the
bridges are repaired, and you can continue towards Endor.

When you get to Endor, you will find that a shop is for sale. However,
Taloon needs the King's permission before he can buy it, and even then it is
far out of your price range. Go to the castle, and give the letter to the
princess. It seems that the prince of Bonmalmo and the princess of Endor are
in love. The king of Endor will give you a note to give to the King of
Bonmalmo, so return there. Give it to the king. He will realize that if the
prince and princess get married, then he will still be able to use the wealth
of Endor without starting a war. For helping to prevent the war, the King of
Endor will give you permission to start a shop. However, Taloon still needs
30,000 gold to buy it (I've been told that the shop really costs 35,000).
Luckily and coincidentally, the antique collector in town is looking for a
silver statuette, and will pay any price. What a great opportunity to make a
few bucks.

The statuette is in a cave that is north, and slightly east of Endor, on the
other side of the bridge. Before going, you might want to hire one of the
mercenaries in town. It costs 400 gold to hire the soldier for five days,
and 600 to hire the Troubadour, but having them with you makes the cave
easier. The soldier can be found near your shop, and the Troubadour can be
found in the inn. Go to the cave, and explore it to find the statuette. If
you happen to find any broad swords or half plate armors in the cave, you
should not throw them away or sell them unless you absolutely need room in
your inventory for the statuette. Even though you can't equip all of them,
they will come in handy in a little while. Anyways, once you have the
statuette, go back to Endor, and sell it to the collector. He will give you
enough money to buy the shop, so you can buy it and fulfil Taloon's dreams.
Once you buy it, Taloon's wife and child will come and join him in town.
Now, go talk to the king. He'll commission you to find six broad swords, and
six half plate armors, and will pay 60,000 gold if you get them all (I've
been told that its 7 swords and 7 plate armors, not 6). Coincidentally, if
you have gone to the large cave just east of Endor, you will have encountered
an old man trying to raise 60,000 to construct a tunnel. Maybe you should
help him!

You may have noticed by now, but if you haven't, the enemies in this chapter
often drop items. Occasionally, they will even drop broad swords and half-
plate armors, which you can give to the king of Endor. Unfortunately, they
usually drop less useful items. However, even these seemingly useless items
can help you fulfil your commission. Just take them back to Endor, and give
them to your wife to sell in your shop. The profit you make from this will
allow you to buy Broad Swords and Half-Plate Armors from other towns, and
bring them back. Jacob K. has told me that while broadswords can only be
found in battles or in chests, Half Plate Armors can be found in battle or
purchased in the shop in Endor.

No matter whether you buy the items or just get lucky and have the enemies
drop them for you, it shouldn't take you especially long to get the items you
need. After you give Endor everything, you will receive your pay. Take it
to the old man in the cave, and pay for the construction of the cave. Go
home and sleep, and once you wake up, you will receive a message telling you
that the tunnel is complete. Go through the tunnel, and the chapter will
end.

Chapter 4: The Sisters of Monbaraba
******************************

This chapter stars two sisters: Mara, a popular dancer, and her little sister
Nara, a fortuneteller. Several years ago, their alchemist father, Edgar, was
killed by his apprentice, Balzak, and the two sisters want revenge.

The chapter starts with Mara's last performance at the Monbaraba Theater.
Once the dance is over, and morning starts, talk to everyone in town. They
will tell you some information, and offer you luck in your revenge. Since
you are beginning with new characters you will need to train for a little
bit, and improve their levels and equipment. Once you are strong enough,
travel north, to the sister's hometown of Kievs.

In Kievs, the people welcome you back, and the innkeeper will let you stay
for free. The people will talk about Edgar's other apprentice Orin, and the
Sphere of Silence. Both the man and the item are in the cave to the west of
Kievs. However, you should probably get a little stronger before attempting
the cave. Since you can sleep for free in the town, this shouldn't be a
problem. If you go to Edgar's lab at night, you can meet a slime, who will
give you some more information. If you listen to everyone in town, you will
be able to piece together the story of Edgar and Balzak. It seems that Edgar
accidentally discovered the Secret of Evolution, and wanted to destroy it.
Unfortunately Balzak killed him, wounded Orin, and stole the Secret.

After gaining a few more levels, go to the cave. Pay no attention to the man
who says that he couldn't find any way down. There are no stairs, but there
are elevators. Even better! When you reach one, step on the switch to
activate it. When you meet Orin, he will tell you that he, too, has been
looking for revenge against Balzak, and join you. Search the chest next to
him to find the Lamp of Darkness, which changes day into night. This item is
not necessary, but it is convenient to have. Anyways, proceed further into
the dungeon to find the Sphere of Silence. Once you have it, exit the cave
and return to Kievs.

Heal up, and head to Keeleon Castle. The door to the castle is locked, but
Orin is very strong, and can open locked doors. Inside, you will learn some
important information. It seems that Balzak has taken over the castle, but
no one except for the Counsel knows where his room is. The Counsel is a
coward though, and a loud noise, like exploding gunpowder, might scare him
into revealing the location of the room. Gunpowder can be found in the
mining town of Aktemto, so you will have to travel there to find it.

On your way to Aktemto, you will run across the port town of Haville. There
is a ship to Endor, but you need a boarding pass to take it. The sisters
have not fought Balzak yet anyways, so don't worry about it for now. Buy the
optimal equipment, and head towards Aktemto.

The mining town of Aktemto is in a very poor state. Poison gas and monsters
have been coming from the mine, so just about everyone in town is either dead
or dying. The miners refuse to stop mining until they have gotten all of the
gold possible, though, despite the danger. The gunpowder is in the mine, so
enter it. While exploring the mine, you will find the Silver Tarot Cards for
Nara. This is a weapon that is very unpredictable. The effect is determined
by what card Nara draws. If you want to, you might want to equip it for a
while to experiment, but overall, the cards are too unpredictable to be
useful. At the end of the mine, the miners will allow you to take the
remaining gunpowder. Take it back to Keeleon.

Go to the area next to the Consoler's room, and Use the Gunpowder. The
counsel will begin to run. Follow him to learn the location of Balzak's
secret room. Once inside, you will encounter Balzak. He has used the Secret
of Evolution on himself, and has transformed into a superhuman form. Talk to
him to fight him.

The first time I played this game, I had the same problem against Balzak that
I had when I fought Zoma in Dragon Warrior 3. I completely forgot that there
was an item in you inventory that you were supposed to use against him.
After dying a few times, I finally remembered that I had the Sphere of
Silence, and used it. After his spells are sealed, Balzak shouldn't be very
difficult. Unfortunately, after he is beat, he will call for help, and
another one of Necrosaro's henchmen, Keeleon will arrive to fight you. (If
you have ever played Dragon Warrior Monsters, you may recognize Keeleon as
King Leo, the strongest member of the Beast family.) This battle will be
doomed from the beginning, and you will most likely be killed in the first
round. Lucky for you, this is supposed to happen, so don't even bother trying
to defend yourself. You will wake up in jail.

The old man that shares you cell will give you a boarding pass for the boat
in Haville, and you will be able to escape. Unfortunately, you will lose
Orin, when he stays behind to cover the sister's escape. Go to Haville and
board the ship to Endor. That's the end of Chapter 4.

************************
Chapter 5: The Chosen Ones
************************

In this chapter, you will finally meet the main character! The main
character is a green-haired, 17-year-old boy or girl (depending on what you
picked). The good thing about this game is that if you pick a girl
character, you will actually look like a girl, and the game will change
accordingly (i.e. people will call you a "young woman"). This is a great
improvement over DW3, where if you picked a girl, you would still look like a
boy, and everyone would call you a "lad", or a "young boy".

The Hero has been living in a small, secluded village, that few outsiders
know about. In fact, the village currently has its first visitor ever! Talk
to everyone, including your best friend, and deliver lunch to your father.
When you return home to eat your own lunch, monsters will attack. They have
been searching for the Hero's location for years, and are eager to destroy
the Hero. His/her "parents" will reveal that they are not really your mom
and dad, and the village will rush to hide the Hero. It seems that everyone
in the village had known of his/her identity, and had been working to train
and protect the Hero until the day that he/she could fulfil the destiny laid
upon him/her.

While the Hero is hiding, the village will be slaughtered. The Hero's best
friend, in order to protect you, will impersonate you, and will be killed in
your stead. Since the monsters believe you to be dead, they will leave.
Exit your hiding place, and see your home in ruins. Before leaving the
wreaked town, search the small sandy area that your friend was laying in at
the beginning of the chapter to find a Feather Hat. This will prove to be
useful if you remember to equip it.

Head south until you reach a Woodsman's shack. Feeling sorry for you, he
will allow you to take the items in his jars. After collecting them,
continue south until you reach the kingdom of Branca. In this town, talk to
everyone, including the king. The adventuring party in town will ask you to
join them before realizing that they already have four members. Don't worry,
though, you will find your own allies soon enough. After training for a
while, enter the tunnel that leads to Endor (the one that Taloon built at the
end of Chapter Three). Once in town, you will learn that the Princess of
Endor and the Prince of Bonmalmo are being wed in the coliseum. You can go
see if you want to. If your talk to Taloon's wife, you will learn that
Taloon is searching for a legendary sword that can defeat evil. But the most
important thing to do is to find Mara and Nara. Nara will be talking to the
mercenary in front of Taloon's shop. Take her up on her fortune telling
offer, and, after realizing who you are, she will join you. Mara is in the
casino. After Nara is in your party, talk to her to have her join you as
well. Now that you have allies, increase your levels a little, and head back
to Branca. Before leaving, you may want to go to Taloon's shop. Since he is
not there to provide merchandise, Taloon's wife has converted it to a bank.
Store any extra items here throughout the game if you run out of inventory
space.

You have probably noticed that the controls in battle have changed now. The
only character that you can control completely is the hero. All of the other
characters run on AI. You can, however, tell them what strategy to take.
For example, you can tell them to be offensive, defensive, use no MP, etc.
This can make the battles a little more complex (and sometimes annoying), but
once you play for a little while, you should get used to it, and learn how to
use it to your advantage.

East of Branca is a large desert that you need to cross. Unfortunately, you
need a horse cart to get across, and the owner of the cart is a little hard
to talk to. It seems that his best friend once betrayed him, and he no
longer trusts anyone. To give him back his faith, you need to find the
Symbol of Faith, which is in the cave further east. In the cave, there are
several walls that you can break down if you have at least three people in
your party. Unfortunately, You will be separated from Mara and Nara fairly
early in this dungeon. Look around for them. As soon as you try to follow
them, you will find them again. Or so you think. Unfortunately, they aren't
real, and will attack you. After beating their doubles, continue searching
for the sisters. You will find them being chased by monsters, but these,
too, are fakes. Finally, the third set of sisters you see are the real ones.
Unfortunately, they have been chased around by your double, and are
suspicious of your reality at first. They will ask you a question to prove
your identity. Which sister did you find in the casino? I'm sure you
remember, don't you? Just in case you don't, it was Mara. (This has to be
the stupidest part of the game. If you answer incorrectly, they'll give you
another chance... and ask the exact same question. Since there's only two
options, it's very obvious. So if you really were a monster, Mara and Nara
would be dead.) Now that your party is reunited, you can break down the
breakable walls and find the Symbol. Take it back to Hector (the man with
the horse cart) and he will not only give you the cart, but join you as well!

Now that you have the cart, you can cross the desert, and travel south. Just
past the desert, you will run across the town of Aneaux. This is the town
where a famed hero, Ruvas is buried. Talk to the man at the entrance of town
to get a guided tour of the town, and you can see the famed Zenithian Armor
he once wore. Unfortunately, if you come to the town at night, you can meet
the ghost of Ruvas in the graveyard, who will tell you that the armor on
display is a fake.

Leave Aneaux and travel to the port town of Konenber. This town was once a
prosperous town, but monsters have taken over the lighthouse, making it
impossible to sail. People will tell you that Taloon has been constructing a
new ship, and he went to the lighthouse to try to stop the monsters. Before
heading to the lighthouse, make sure to search all of the jars and shelves in
both the ship on the dock, and the half built one in the foundry. There is
one Small Medal in each ship, and this is your only opportunity to find them.
After you liberate the lighthouse, the ships are inaccessible. After doing
this, and buying the best equipment possible, go to the lighthouse.

On the first story of the lighthouse, you will encounter Taloon, who will ask
you to save the lighthouse. He tells you that if you place the Flame of
Serenity in the tower's light, it should restore the lighthouse. He'll then
leave to wait for you in town. Travel up the tower. Along the way, you will
find the Flame of Serenity in a chest. In the room with the flame, take the
staircase on the north end of the room to advance forward, not the one on the
southern end. Finally, when you reach the tower's light, you will encounter
the monsters that took over the lighthouse. You must fight one Lighthouse
Bengal, and two Flamers. This battle is not especially difficult, and should
be no problem if you are leveled up enough. After defeating them, throw the
Flame of Serenity into the large fire, and then jump out of the Lighthouse.
Go back to Konenber. Taloon will join you, and, now that it is finished
being built, you will also gain use of his ship.

Once you have a ship, you can travel to many new places. One important place
is on a small island in the NorthEast corner of the world. On this island is
a shrine where the Medal King lives. Give him any Small Medals that you
find, and you can redeem them for good items. There are barely enough medals
to get one of each item, so don't miss any! You will probably return to this
island several times throughout your adventure.

Now that you own a ship, you can travel all over the world. Go south of
Konenber to the town of Mintos. If you go during the day, talk to the
innkeeper, who will be giving a speech outside. When he asks if you think
that he the expert of the sea say "no". He'll agree, because he's the expert
of everything, not just the sea. He'll give you the treasure map as an
award. If you use it, it will show you a map of the world, with an arrow
pointing to a place surrounded by mountains. Although you can not reach this
place yet, the map is useful for showing you where you are. Anyways, you
will find Cristo and Brey in the inn. Cristo has fallen ill, and Alena has
left to find a cure. Talk to Cristo, and he will join you. The cure for
Cristo's disease is supposed to be in the kingdom of Soretta. Travel to the
southeastern part of the continent to find the castle. Alas, the supply of
Pedequia Root has died, and that is the only thing that can cure Cristo.
Fortunately, the king's ancestor put a Padequia seed in a nearby cave in case
of emergencies.

Travel to the cave. Inside, you will encounter Alena, but she won't join you
yet (she's currently with the adventuring party you met earlier), so continue
deeper into the cave. The moving floors can be very annoying, but try not to
get frustrated by them. I would help you through them, but I still have
trouble getting through these areas myself!

After getting the seed, give it to the king of Soretta, and he will give you
some root. Go back to Mintos, and give the root to Cristo. After he
recovers, both he and Alena will join your party. Unfortunately, Hector will
decide to stay behind. You can see him working in the inn of Mintos, but for
some reason, he won't give you a discount! Some loyalty!

There's only one more character to find. Return to Keeleon Castle. A man
standing outside will ask you to help Ragnar, who is inside. To get in, you
need the Magic Key, which can be made by an alchemist. The closest that you
can get is Mara and Nara's dead father. Return to their hometown of Kievs,
and talk to the slime in Edgar's basement. He will tell you that Edgar had a
secret laboratory in the cave to the west, where you found the Sphere of
Silence. Go there, and travel to the room where you first encountered Orin.
Search the treasure chest that originally contained the Lamp of Darkness, and
a secret path will open. Go to the lab, and pick up the Magic Key. Now you
can open all doors, except for jail cells. Return to Keeleon Castle and head
towards the secret throne room. You will soon encounter Ragnar fighting some
guards. While he keeps them busy, walk up and battle Keeleon. This time,
you actually have to win, so try your hardest. He can be difficult, since he
can attack twice in a round. Make sure you keep all four of your party
member's HP high. Otherwise, Keeleon may hit the same character twice, and
kill him or her. After winning, Ragnar will join you. Now that Keeleon is
liberated, you can leave. If you talk to the man outside the castle (who
asked you to help Ragnar), he will reveal himself to be the now human Healie
before departing.

If you have trained earlier in the game, you can now go and free Santeem
Castle. If you don't think you are very strong yet, you may want to wait for
a while before going there. If you do go, you will find that monsters now
populate the castle. The good slime talking to the cat will tell you to talk
to a man in Surene to learn more about the King's powers of prophesy. Go to
Surene, and go through the door that was previously locked. Now that you
have the Magic Key, you can go through. You will find a shop, and an old man
who tells you that when the King was a child, he once had a signpost made for
his daughter to use in the future. Follow the perimeter of the big building
to the north to find it. Read it to get a clue as to where to go later on
(although you don't need it, because you have this great walkthrough!) Go to
Santeem Castle, and travel to the throne room, where you will find a further
evolved form of Balzak. He is a lot harder than he was the first time you
fought him, so don't let you HP drop too low. Heal when you are hurt, to
keep from being killed. After you defeat him, go back downstairs. DO NOT
FORGET TO GET THE TREASURE CHESTS IN THE NORTH END OF THE FIRST FLOOR! A
flame previously guarded them, but now that Balzak is gone, they are
accessible. I got stuck for hours because I forgot to pick them up, and they
are VERY important items. The Flute of Uncovering, and the Magma Staff will
both be needed later on for the story to continue. Once you have them,
leave. Unfortunately, even though Balzak is gone, the people of Santeem will
not return now.

If you travel South of Santeem, you will come to a small village called
Seaside Village. The people in town will tell you about the Stones of
Drought and the Sandglass of Regression. The Stones are in this town. Go to
the town during the night, and look at the beach. The tide has covered the
whole thing except for a small spot. Wait until the day, and go to that spot
of the beach. Search to find the Stones, then leave.

North of Santeem is the castle of Stancia. The people in the town tell you
that the king is holding a joke contest, to see who can make him laugh.
Although everyone thinks this is strange behavior, many are trying their
luck. If you go to the castle (by boat) you can try, but fail miserably.
But all is not lost. It seems that a very funny jester named Panon is
performing in Monbaraba's theatre. Go to the back room or the theater, and
talk to Panon during the day. He'll agree to help you, and join you. Take
him to Stancia, and have him talk to the king. Instead of telling a joke,
Panon will get the king to admit that the whole joke contest is just the
King's attempt to get his subject's spirits up in these dark times. The King
will agree to give you the Zenithian Helm with the hope that you can restore
peace to the world. When you leave Stancia, Panon will depart.

You may have heard in Stancia that the Zenithian Shield was once kept in
Burland Castle (Ragnar's home castle). However, if you go there, the king
will tell you that his grandfather gave it to the Queen of the nearby castle
of Gardenbur. Unfortunately, an earthquake sealed the path to the castle,
and you need the Magma Staff to open it. Luckily, you should have that item
by now (unless you forgot to pick it up, like I did!) Anyways, before
traveling to Gardenbur, go north to Izmit and sleep in the inn. You will
have a strange dream involving Necrosaro and an Elf girl named Rosa. Make
sure you remember this dream, because it will come in handy later on. After
seeing the dream, go East of Burland towards Gardenbur, using the Staff of
Magma at the mountains.

Women rule the kingdom of Gardenbur. Therefore, the armor shops only sell
items that females can equip. This can be useful if your hero is a girl, but
may suck if it's not. Either way, you can still buy stuff for the other
female characters. Anyways, search the castle and talk to people. I've been
told about an item here that many people miss. On the first floor, go behind
the staircase leading up. You can walk through the wall here to a hidden
room, where you can find the Flame Claw, a powerful weapon for Alena. When
you talk to the man in a small room, he will tell you to search a dresser,
and then leave. It does not matter whether or not you listen to him. Either
way, you will be accused of stealing a woman's prized Bronze Amulet. Of
course you don't have it, but to prove your innocence, you have to recover
it. The Queen will tell you to leave a hostage behind to ensure that you
won't just escape. Choose someone that isn't in your party to sit in jail
for you. Don't worry, if you want to change your hostage, just talk to the
lady in the jail. You can't, however, leave your hero behind.

Travel South East of the castle to find a cave in which the real thief is
hiding. This cave is very easy, so gather the treasures along the way and
face the thief. Since there are fewer than usual random battles, make sure
to search all over for the treasures, many of which are good. Among these
are an Agility Seed, a Strength Seed, a Small Medal, and a Dragon Shield.
When you finally reach Bakor, the real thief of the amulet, be prepared for a
potentially tough fight. He can become fairly hard as the battle progresses,
Since he often casts defense-raising spells. Your best bet is to hit him as
hard as you can before he starts to raise his defenses. Once he does, it
becomes difficult to inflict a lot of damage to him. Once you beat him, take
the amulet back to Gardenbur. The Queen will release the hostage, and reward
you with both the Zenithian Shield, which you should give to your hero, and
the Final Key. Now you can unlock all of the jail doors in the world.

Now that you have the Final Key, travel by boat to the area around the Medal
King's shrine. A little bit north of the King's house lies the Shrine of
Breaking Waves. The enemies can be tough, so make sure you enter prepared.
At the end of the dungeon, you will find the Zenithian Armor. Collect it and
then exit the shrine. Don't forget to equip the armor on your hero, though,
since it is very good.

A little bit south of the Medal King's shrine is another cave. This dungeon
is optional, and you do not need to enter it, however, I highly recommend
that you do. Before you can enter, however, you need the Stone of Drought,
which you have if you have been following this walkthrough. Near the
entrance of the cave, where the waterfall blocks your way, use the Stone of
Drought to proceed deeper into the dungeon. Inside you will find many useful
treasures, most notably the Sandglass of Regression, which resets a battle
when you use it, and the powerful Metal Babble Sword. Once you have gathered
these treasures, leave the cave, and continue your journey.

Remember the dream that you had when you stayed in Izmit Inn? Well now you
get to meet the girl from it. Travel to the town of Rosaville. Talk to
everyone in town, including the people in the tower that NecroSaro built.
Someone tells you that there is a secret passage somewhere in the town.
Hmmmm, wonder where it could be. If you paid attention to the dream, you
should already know what to do, but for those of you who didn't, I'm here to
help you! (Luckily for you!) Go to the East Side of the tower, and play the
Flute of Uncovering. The passage will open up. Travel up to the top of the
tower (don't worry, there's no enemies but the boss). When you do reach the
top, you will have to face the Saro Knight, who is guarding the final room of
the tower. It has about 800 HP, so hit it hard. Unfortunately, it has the
habit of sealing your spells, so magic users may quickly lose their
usefulness. However, once you beat it, you will receive a Sphere of Silence.
Now that he is out of the way, enter the room, and talk to the elf girl from
the dream. Her name is Rosa. It seems that she was cursed with the ability
to cry rubies instead of tears. Because of this, humans abused her to cause
her to cry. Saro, who loved her, built the tower to protect her. Despite
her friendship with Saro, Rosa realizes that his current plans to destroy
humanity are wrong, and asks you to stop him. Talk to her pet Slime to learn
that the Staff of Transformation, which you need to enter NecroSaro's castle
is in the Royal Crypt, South East of Endor.

Take the boat to the crypt, and then enter it. You will need the final key
to open the doors at the entrance. Explore the crypt, but make sure you are
strong enough. Since some of the enemies are fairly strong, you should be at
a fairly high level to survive. My party was around level 25 when I went
through. You should be at that or higher. Unfortunately, this dungeon has
those damned annoying moving floors in it, which makes the dungeon a lot
harder than it should be. Find the Staff of Transformation, and, also, the
Staff of Antimagic. Then use Outside.

Towards the south of the world, you will find the village of Riverton. It is
a river town, so sail through it. In town, talk to everyone. Pay especial
attention to the shop keeper who wants to build a balloon, but does not have
the gas canister needed to complete it After resting and restocking, go south
of Riverton to the small shrine.

The first thing that you should notice when you enter the shrine is the large
stone statue on the left side of the screen. After unlocking the jail cell
door blocking the entrance to it, go to it, and enter. You must climb to the
top and hit the switch that activates it. There are enemies here, so don't
go in unprepared. Several of them, including the enemy that looks like a
palette swap of Keeleon, can attack more than once in a round. When you get
to the point when you have to jump out of either the left or right eye, jump
out of the left one. The right one will send you back to a previous part of
the dungeon.

Once the statue is activated, it will take you across the river and give you
access to NecroSaro's Dire Palace. This is the monster's castle, so you will
be attacked if you go in normally. Use the staff of transformation until
your party turns into monsters (or animals). However, don't take too long,
as the transformation does not last very long. Go to the meeting room, and
after talking to everyone, sit at your place and wait for NecroSaro to come.
He brings some bad news (for you anyways). The palace of Esturk, ancient
ruler of evil, has been uncovered in Aktemto's mine. NecroSaro will then
depart with his troops to revive Esturk. After to meeting, explore the rest
of Dire Palace to loot it. Then, leave and go back to Aktemto.

Go through Aktemto mine, and where there was a dead end the first time, there
will now be a new tunnel that leads to Esturk's palace. Be warned that once
you go in, you can not cast Outside, so if you want to leave, you will have
to walk all the way back out. Just be as well prepared as possible before
going in so you won't have to leave. If you are around level 30, you should
be fine. Once you get through the new tunnel, you will find Esturk's palace.
However, before entering the main complex, go through the small building on
the left to find a spot to heal. Then, enter the palace. While exploring
the castle, you should come across a flame guarding a treasure chest.
Remember where this is for later. The item inside is very important. Once
you reach the throne room, approach Esturk. You will fight him once you
stand in front of him.

When you fight Esturk, the first thing you will probably notice is the music.
It's not the same old music as always! Finally, some sort of boss music!
The second thing that you will probably notice is that Esturk begins the
battle while asleep. However, don't think that means that he is defenseless.
Even while asleep, he can emit an "Eerie Light" that hits everyone in your
party. After a couple of rounds, he will wake up. While awake, he can
attack twice in one round (I guess because he's holding two swords). While
each blow isn't too bad, if he hits the same person twice in the same round
he can quickly take a character down into the critical zone. Quickly heal a
character that this happens to. You have a choice in how to fight him. If
you keep him awake, he will attack twice a round, or, if you put him back
into slumberland with a Sleep spell, he will continue to emit the light and
damage the whole party. How you fight him is up to you. Either way, you
should be able to beat him fine if you are around level 30. After defeating
him, NecroSaro will arrive in time to see the Ruler of Evil bite the dust.
Before he can do anything to you, however, one of his troops will run in to
report that Rosa's tower has been breached, and humans have kidnapped Rosa.
NecroSaro will run out, leaving you free to get out of the mine. Like I said
before, you can't use Outside. Of course you don't want to, or you will miss
some thing. Remember the chest guarded by the flame? Now that Esturk is
dead, the flame will be gone, and you will be free to take the Gas Canister
inside of the chest. After you walk out of Aktemto, Return to Riverton and
give the Gas Canister to the item shopkeeper. He will make you a Hot Air
Balloon. Now you can fly all over the world!

Before continuing your quest, you will want to go back to Izmit and sleep in
the Inn again. You will have a new dream. Rosa is being beat by her
kidnappers so she will cry. NecroSaro comes to save her, but he is too late.
Rosa is dying. With her last breath, she tells Saro to forget his evil
plans, but NecroSaro does not listen to her, and swears to destroy all
mankind in vengeance.

Now that you can fly, you can explore new areas without worrying about random
battles. Travel to Elfville next. It is the area marked on your treasure
map. Talk to the elves in the village, and buy new equipment if you can
afford it. In the middle of town is a huge tree. This is the famous World
Tree. Before entering the tree, make sure to talk to the man in town who
tells you to take only three people with you. Make sure you do what he says.
You will be getting a new character at the top, and you will not be able to
do this if your party is full. Once you shrink you party size to three, enter
the tree and make your way up. While on your way up, make sure you don't
accidentally step off the side or you will have to start all over again.
While you are walking around on the leafy areas of the ground, you can
sometimes find a Leaf of the World Tree if you search. Once you get to the
top of the tree, you will find Lucia. She is from Zenithia, but monsters
hurt her wings while she was gathering World Leaves, so she can't return by
yourself. Talk to her, and she will join her party. Before leaving the
tree, make sure you pick up the Zenithian Sword, which is near the place
where you found Lucia. It is the last piece of Zenithian equipment that you
need.

Now, fly to the small island towards the middle of the map. Although it
doesn't look like there is anything on it while you are in the air, once you
land on it, it will become much larger. Unfortunately, you can't fly your
balloon across the island, so you will have to walk around by foot. Travel
to Gottside, the town that is nearest to the entrance to Zenithia. Talk to
everyone, including the injured Zenithian. Restock and then head East to a
small shrine. Don't worry, though, because there are no enemies inside. Get
the Baron's Horn inside, which will be useful at the end of the game. Then
leave the shrine and go to the Zenithian Tower.

At the top of the tower, you will be able to enter Zenithia if you have all
the Zenithian equipment (the helmet, armor, shield, and sword). When you
enter the town, Lucia will leave your party. Go to the top of the tower and
talk to the Master Dragon. He will bless the Zenithian Sword, and give the
Hero some free experience. Talk to everyone else in Zenithia. Your wagon
will be called to you here. When you find Lucia, she will thank you again
and tell the baby dragon Doran to join your party. Talk to the guy who is
raising baby World Trees to get the Dew of the World tree. This is an item
that completely refills the HP of everyone in your party. This can be very
useful in the final battle. Also, go to the library to get some information.
It seems that, contrary to popular belief, Esturk was not the most perfectly
evolved being. The Golden Bracelet, which magnifies dark power, is needed to
complete the process of evolution. Since NecroSaro has had the bracelet
since chapter two (remember Alena had to use it to pay the fake princess'
ransom), there may now be an even stronger force than Esturk! When you are
ready, go to the hole on the outside of Zenithia and jump in. You will land
next to the cave near Gottside that you could see, but could not enter
(because there are mountain surrounding it). Now, enter it, and travel down
towards NecroSaro's dark world.

This cave can be very hard, so don't go in until you are around level 35 at
the least. And remember, if you have to, run when you can. There's no
disgrace in being a coward!

After you exit the cave, you will be in a dark world. NecroSaro's final
palace is nearby, but a magic barrier seals it. Before working on trying to
shut it off, go to the shrine right next to the exit of the cave that you
just went through. This is the Last Refuge. You will be able to heal and
save here. Now that you are at full health, you must deactivate NecroSaro's
barrier by defeating his four minions, Infurnious Shadow, Gigademon,
Radimvice, and Anderoug. You will fight one of these in each of the four
shrines that are located on the Four Corners of NecroSaro's dark land.

The order in which you battle these monsters does not matter, so just attack
which one you want to. Their HP is as follows:

Infurnous Shadow: 250
Gigademon: 1023
Anderoug: 300
Radimvice: 820

If you got this far without having a really hard time, you should be able to
beat them. If you are having trouble, gain some levels by fighting monsters
in the area and healing at the Last Refuge. There are
a few tricky parts in destroying the four.

Anderoug may have very little HP for a boss, but he has the very annoying
habit of calling other Anderougs to help him. You must kill them all to win.
You have to try to kill all of them in one blow, because if even one is left,
it can quickly summon new ones. Hit each one on the screen until it is
almost dead. When each one has low HP, cast a spell that hits all enemies,
and hope that it kills all of them at once.

The hardest part about killing Gigademon is actually getting to him. In his
den, there are monsters that mirror your moves. If you touch them, you will
be kicked out of the den. However, notice that there are several blocks in
the room. When you get in, walk forward. The monster will mirror you.
Then, when they are lined up with a block, go left. The monster will get
stuck against the block, and be thrown out of step. After, the monsters
should not be able to touch you, and you can proceed to the stairs. The
exact solution given by Nintendo Power in Volume 56 is "Walk up for steps,
left four steps, up four steps, right four steps, and then go straight up the
stairs"

When the four guards are defeated, the barrier will vanish. Now that you
have access, enter NecroSaro's castle. If you beat the four guards, the
actual castle should not be much of a battle. On the first floor, there are
several monsters that wonder around. These dolls are fairly easy to beat
(unless they start casting Defeat), so don't waste you energy trying to avoid
them. The first floor is also covered with barriers. It would be a good
idea to cast Step Guard, or your HP will be quickly drained. When you get to
the pit that is blocking your way, just go up the stairs next to the hole,
and take the elevator there down. It will cover the hole and you can
proceed. When you get to the second elevator, take it down, and then go back
upstairs to the floor that it was on. Since it is now gone, you can travel
across the area that it was blocking. After that, just finish going through
the castle, and go out the back. I've been told that there is a Sage Stone
hidden in this castle. Make sure you found it, as it will be very useful in
the final battle.

When you get through, stop for a minute before entering the mountain behind
the castle. Heal up, and use the Baron's Horn. Your horsecart will be
called to you, so you will have backup characters during the final battle.
Finally, enter the mountain and climb to the top. You will meet NecroSaro in
his evolved form. Although he originally looks just like a palette swap of
Esturk, he will change throughout the battle until he reaches his fully
evolved form. Throughout the changes, his style of attack changes.

At first, he will do two physical attacks per round. When you knock one arm
off, this will change to one attack per round. When the other arm is
destroyed, he will begin to cast magic. When his head disappears, a face
will appear in his stomach and continue casting spells. Once he gets new
arms, he will be able to go twice per round. Finally, once his new head
grows, he will be complete and, after casting bounce on himself, attack at
full force.

Your best bet is to have your hero, two strong physical fighters like Alena
and Ragnar, and a healing person like Cristo in your party. When the battle
starts, set Cristo (or whatever healing character you choose to use) to No
MP, so he won't waste his magic casting spells like Beat or Sleep (which, of
course, will never work against the last boss). Once you start getting hurt,
change him to defensive so he can heal you. If Cristo has the Staff of
Healing in his inventory, he can still use that to heal even if he is set on
No MP. However, the healing powers of the staff are not as great as most of
the later healing spells, so you will eventually have to have Cristo start
casting magic to recover your health. However, if you found the Sage Stone
in NecroSaro's castle, your task will be much easier. The healing abiliies
of the stone are far greater than that of the Staff of Healing. Don't waste
your time casting stat changing spells like Increase. NecroSaro can nullify
the effects of these, so they are useless for this battle. Use the Hero to
help Cristo heal, and attack with him/her if you have the chance. If you get
into really bad trouble, use HealUsAll or the Dew of the World Tree. If one
of your characters die, replace him or her with a similar character. Doran
is a good alternative to either Alena or Ragnar, and Nara can replace Cristo.
After you attack him for a while, NecroSaro will perish.

Once NecroSaro dies, you will return to Zenithia. Talk to everyone in the
castle, and then leave. The ending and credits will begin once you exit the
castle.

Congratulations for beating Dragon
Warrior IV!

                                               *******************

There are eight main characters that join you during the game. You are
introduced to the first seven during the first four chapters, and then, as
the Hero, must find and unite them in the fifth chapter. These characters
each have their own strengths and weaknesses.

The Hero:
_________

This is you, the main character. You get to pick its name and gender. The
son (or daughter) of a citizen of Zenithia and a woodsman, the Hero was
raised in a small village where he/she was trained to become the legendary
hero. After the monsters searching for the hero destroyed the town, he/she
left to fulfil his/her destiny.

The Hero is well-rounded character. He has pretty good attack and defense,
and learns both attack and healing spells. In addition, he is the only one
that can cast the powerful spells of Throdain and HealUsAll. Once chapter
five begins, this is the character that you will use most of the time.

Ragnar
______

Ragnar is a royal soldier from the kingdom of Burland. When the children of
Izmit village disappeared, he was sent to rescue them. After discovering the
reason of the monsters' activities, he left Burland to seek out the Hero and
aid him in his quest.

Ragnar is a very good physical fighter. Although he can not cast any type of
magic, his strong power more than makes up for it. In fact, if you equip him
with the Metal Babble Sword, he will become the strongest physical character
in the game. Use this valiant warrior to your advantage, but just don't ask
why he's wearing pink clothes.

Alena
_____

Alena is the princess of the Kingdom of Santeem. Far from being the
traditional damsel in distress, she is a tomboyish fighter, who wants to
leave on a journey to test her strength. Although her father is originally
against this idea, she does eventually set off with Cristo and Brey and soon
meets up with the Hero.

Alena is like a fighter from Dragon Warrior III. There is only one type of
weapon that she can use effectively, the Claw, but when she levels up, her
strength stat goes way up. In this way, she is still a very good fighter,
and can be pretty useful during the game. Like Ragnar, however, she can not
cast any magical spells.

Cristo
______

Cristo is a cleric that lives in Santeem. He leaves the castle with Alena
and Brey so he can protect her. When the Hero first met him, he was
suffering from an illness, but after he is cured, he joins the Hero's group.

Cristo has very weak offense and defense. However, on the plus side, he is
one of the few characters that can equip the Metal Babble Shield. He casts
powerful healing and assist magic, so he is a valuable ally, despite his lack
of physical prowess.

Brey
____

Brey is an old man, and Alena's tutor. When Alena left Santeem, he left with
her. Despite his elderly age, he is still a formidable Wizard, and casts
powerful spells. He joined the Hero so he could help cure Cristo.

Like the other spell casting characters, Brey is weak Offensively and
Defensively. However, he, too, can equip the Metal Babble Shield. Some of
his spells are useful, but are not as effective as a strong physical attacks
most of the time (although there are always exceptions).

Taloon
______

Taloon is a poor merchant who dreams of becoming the world's greatest arms
dealer. Unlike the other main characters, Taloon in a family man, with both
a wife and a son. After finally starting his own shop, he sets out to find
and help the Hero, meeting him in the lighthouse.

Taloon is not a very great character. He has only average strength, and can
not cast any magical spells. Sometimes, instead of attacking, he will do
something else to help, such as scare enemies or sweep the enemies legs.
Unfortunately, these abilities are not very useful. And the main thing that
makes him annoying to use is the fact that he will sometimes block hits for
someone else, and get himself killed. (duhhhh, I have 2 HP, and Ragnar has
200 HP. I better jump in the way to protect him and get myself killed.
Duhhh.) Therefore, I rarely used him unless I had to.

Mara
_____

Mara is a beautiful dancer, and the sister of Nara. Her father, the
alchemist Edgar, was killed by his assistant, Balzak, after he discovered the
Secret of Evolution. Now, she and her sister want revenge. She does defeat
Balzak, but must escape with her sister to Endor, where she meets the Hero in
the Casino.

Mara can cast several offensive skills. Her offense and defense are not that
great, but she can equip the Metal Babble Shield. If you want to use a magic
user, she can usually fulfil your needs.

Nara
____

Mara's sister is a fortuneteller. She went with her sister to find Balzak
and avenge her father She and her sister then escaped to Endor. She was the
first person to join the Hero, after seeing his/her future and realizing who
he/she was.

Similar to her sister in attack and defense, Nara casts healing and assist
magic instead. She, like her sister, can equip the Metal Babble Shield. She
is the only one, however, that can use the Silver Tarot Cards.

Besides the main characters, many other characters join you at certain points
of the game. However, unlike the main characters, they will leave your party
after a while. In addition, they can never gain levels or learn any new
abilities, and you can not change their equipment. Despite these
shortcomings, they do provide useful services during key points of the game.

Healie
_____

Healie is a healer slime that Ragnar meets in the first chapter. Even though
he is a monster, he is nice, and dreams about someday becoming a human. He
joins Ragnar in the hope that he hanging out with people will help him become
one. Healie is not to strong, but can cast Heal. This is very important
during the first chapter, especially during the fight against Saro's Shadow.

Although it is never explained how, Healie does eventually become a human,
and you can meet him during the fifth chapter.

Strom, the Soldier Mercenary
_____________________________

During the third chapter, Taloon has the opportunity to hire two mercenaries
from the town of Endor. The soldier mercenary, Strom, can be found near
Taloon's shop. For 400 Gold, he will stay with you for five days. This
character is not essential to get during the game, but he can make chapter
three easier by giving support to Taloon.

Laurent, the Troubadour Mercenary
__________________________________
The second mercenary that Taloon can hire in the third chapter is Laurent, a
Troubadour. He can be found in the second floor of Endor's inn. He costs
600 GP for five days. He casts basic spells, and, like Strom, is not
necessary to complete the game. He is a useful companion, though, so if you
have the money, go ahead and hire him.

Orin
____

Orin was Edgar's other assistant, besides Balzak. When Balzak killed Edgar,
he also seriously wounded Orin. However, Orin recovered, and when Mara and
Nara found him in a cave, he gladly joined them in their quest of vengeance.

Orin has high strength, and, because of this, has the ability to force open
locked doors. When Mara and Nara escaped from Keeleon prison, Orin stayed
behind to ensure their escape.

Hector
______

Hector is the young man who owns the Horsecart. Sadly for him, his best
friend betrayed him, so he no longer trusts anybody. Before you can get the
Horsecart from him, you must search out the Symbol of Faith, which will
restore his faith in mankind. Do this and he not only gives you access to
the cart, but joins your party as well.

Hector is an allright character. At the beginning of chapter four, he is
useful because he fills up the fourth space in your party. Once you heal
Cristo, Hector will stay behind in Mintos to work in the inn.

Panon
______

Panon is a very popular court jester. While performing in Monbaraba's
theatre, he hears of your desire to get into Zenithia, and joins you to win
the Zenithian Helm from the King of Stancia. Surprisingly, he wins it not
with a joke, but by convincing the King that giving you the Helm is the best
way to help save the world.

After you receive the Zenethian Helm, he leaves your party.

Lucia
____

A citizen of Zenthia, Lucia's wings were broken while on the World Tree. She
joins you to get back to her homeland. She is not with you very long, so I
did not use her very much. My normal characters were stronger than her. She
leaves once you reach Zenithia.

Doran
_____

Doran is a baby dragon living in Zenithia. Lucia gives him to you for
helping her. He is very strong physically, and can use powerful breath
weapons.

Once you get Doran, he stays with you until the end of the game.

I'd like to give my appreciation to GWS Wizard, whose Dragon Warrior IV FAQ
(also found on Gamefaqs) I used as a reference to make sure I did not leave
anything out.

I'd also like to thank Enix for making such a great game and series.

I'd like to thank Xian84932 for telling me about the Flame Claw, and
suggesting that the Sage Stone is much more useful in the final battle than
the Staff of Healing.

Dark Paladin126 for telling me Strom's name, and telling me about Laurent.

A DW Fan for telling me Strom's name.

Jacob K. for telling me many small mistakes throughout the guide.

Finally, I'd like to thank CJayC for maintaining such a fantastic site.
