1. Introduction
---------------

This is the first FAQ I intend on writing for Master System games without any
other Walkthroughs or FAQs. I've dubbed this, "The Project".
This FAQ is for, of course, the game "Ninja Gaiden". When I started to play
this game, I was plesently surprised at the degree of difficulty it holds to
newcomers. After I died and had to continue 3 times, I finally got the hang of
the game.
And after a full playthrough, I consider myself 'good' at the game.
I've developed many stratgies and tips for areas in the game, which you will
see later in the FAQ.
Enjoy!

===========

2. Controls
-----------

=-= Normal =-=

Button 1 - Sword Attack
Button 2 - Jump
Button 1 and 2 Simutaneously- Super-Attack (Kills everything on screen +
depleats some HP)
Up + Button 1 - Throw/Use Current Item
Up + Button 2 - Grab onto the Bottom of a Platform
Down + Button 2 - While on a platform, you will descend into
hanging mode.

=-= To Jump Off Walls =-=

(While walking into wall) Button 2 - Jump up and off the wall
(From a distance) Button 2 + Direction of wall - Jump to and off the wall

=-= While Hanging from a Platform =-=

Button 1 - Sword Attack
Up + Button 1 - Throw/Use Current Item
Up + Button 2 - Climb to top of Platform
Down + Button 2 - Let go of Platform (And Fall Down)
Left / Right - Face direction Left or Right

=-= =-=
As you can see, the controls are somewhat simplistic. However, the Jumping off
the Walls technique requires some practise to get good at.

3. Power-up List (with 'N' description)
---------------------------------------

Power-ups can be found in capsules scattered throughout the level. The capsules
can be opened by being attacked with your sword or an item. Once the capsules
are destroyed, a Power-up will fall directly below where the capsule was
suspended.

There are several types of Power-ups:

-Health
-Points
-Attack Item
-'N' Regenerators

Each appear, it would seem, at fixed locations in a level. Health Power-ups
will _always_ appear before a boss, and after certain areas of a level.

=-= Health =-=

All health power-ups have a yellow border around the icon.

   Health Recovery:
Look : Bright white Japanese symbol. Has a line on the left.
Effect : Recovers approx. 2/3 of lost health.
'N' Cost : None
'N' Recovery: None

=-= Points =-=

All point items have a pale orange border around the icon.

   Point 1:
Look : A pale white/grey letter B
Effect : Gives 5,000 points
'N' Cost : None
'N' Recovery: None

   Point 2:
Look : A red letter B
Effect : Gives 10,000 points
'N' Cost : None
'N' Recovery: None

=-= Attack Items =-=
*NOTE*
To use Attack Items, you need 'N' power. More about that in the 'N'
Regenerators section. Also note, that picking up an Attack Item that you
already have will give you some 'N' (this is listed as 'N' recovery).

All Attack Items have a red border around the icon.

   Small Shuriken:
Look : A white plus sign rotated 45 degrees.
Effect : Fires a small shuriken in the direction you are facing.
'N' Cost : 5
'N' Recovery: 50

   Large Shuriken:
Look : Looks like a jagged-ish white plus sign, rotated maybe 10
degrees.
Effect : Fires a much larger shuriken in the direction you are facing, and
continues through enemies.
'N' Cost : 10
'N' Recovery: 50

   Fire Shield:
Look : A swirl of fire with small black lines separating 4 fireballs.
Effect : Creates a swirling shield of fire around you, killing whatever it
contacts. Wears off after 5 Game Seconds.
'N' Cost : 50
'N' Recovery: 50

   Spread Shuriken:
Look : 4 white arrows facing each direction, North, South, East, and
West.
Effect : Fires 4 white balls in each direction, directly North, South,
East, and West of where you are standing.
'N' Cost : 20
'N' Recovery: 50

   Homing Fireballs
Look : Has a red fireball in each of the 4 corners of the icon.
Effect : Shoots 4 fireballs. They seek out an enemy, or capsule, and kills
it with 1 fireball, leaving the others to seek other enemies or capsules on
screen and attack them/it. If there is nothing that can be attacked, the
fireballs will shoot North-West, North-East, South-West, and South-East of
where you activated the attack.
'N' Cost : 40
'N' Recovery: 50

=-= 'N' Regenerators =-=
To be able to use Attack items, you need 'N' power. To acquire 'N' power, you
need to get 'N' Power-ups.

All 'N' Regenerators have a yellow border around the icon.

    Recovery 1:
Look : Looks like a pale white/light grey Japanese symbol.
Effect : Recovers 50 'N' power
'N' Cost : None
'N' Recovery: None

    Recovery 2:
Look : Looks like a Recovery 1, except the Japanese symbol is deep red.
Effect : Recovers 100 'N' power
'N' Cost : None
'N' Recovery: None

=====================================

4. Other Information and General Tips
-------------------------------------

This game takes side-scrolling elements, and mixes in much, much more. Many
times you will be required to jump off walls and onto platforms on a screen
above you, or fall down pits that lead to the next area.
Also, each section of the levels is timed, and so are the boss fights.
As mentioned before, you need to use 'N' power to use Attack Items.

The biggest tip I can give is to _ALWAYS_ save your 'N' power for the final
boss of the level. Unless it is _absolutly_ necessary, never use them during
the actual level. The boss fights are MUCH easier with lots of 'N' power to use
special attacks.

5. Walkthrough

==============================

6. Boss Strategies at a Glance
------------------------------

Level 1: The Sumo Wrestler
This boss is fairly easy to beat, even without any Attack Items.
He will walk left or right along the bottom floor. When he's about half-way to
the wall, he will gain speed and charge the wall, making 4 Ninjas fall from the
sky.
My best advice is to attack him while he is charging to the wall, and after he
recovers and starts to walk to the other wall.
Using Homing Fireballs or other Attack Items helps a lot.
If you have Homing Fireballs, just stay on top of the tree's and go down only
to avoid the falling Ninjas.
Difficulty: 3

Level 2: Yakuza Oyabun
This guy is even easier than the Sumo Wrestler!
When you start off, make your way to the top platform. Sitting in the centre of
the platform is the boss. Just get on his right side, and chop away at him
constantly. Occasionly, a jumper will fly at you from behind. Don't worry about
getting hit (unless you somehow missed the Health Power-up before the boss).
When you do get hit, just climb back up and keep attacking him.
Don't bother using Attack Items unless you really are having a tough time with
him, but I can't see how you would.
Difficulty: 2

Level 3: Tsutenkaku Samurai
Again, you are facing a rather easy boss.
When you get close to this guy, he will swing his sword, and that will probably
hit you. So instead of attacking him with your sword, use an Attack Item.
Homing fireballs works well, and so do Shurikens.
Since he's constantly (slowly) walking toward you, when he gets close to you,
simple jump off the wall and over his head. Proceed to attack him with Attack
Items, and repeat.
If, for some stupid reason, you are out of N power, or have the Fireball Shield
(shudder), then this battle is going to be insanly difficult. Go to the very
far left/right (whichever side the Samurai is NOT on) and wait until he is
very, very close. When he swipes at you, he should miss slightly. Then, jump
off the wall and over his head. If it is timed right, he will swipe a second
time at the wall. This is your chance to hit him! If you are in a good spot, he
will swipe at you and miss, thus allowing you to attack him a second time. This
is really, really hard to do enough times to kill him, so I would suggest that
you take a game over, and try again (and make sure you have some N power or a
good Attack Item.)
Another note, when you approach the boss, if you use hardly any N during the
levels, all your N during the 1st boss, and none for the 2nd boss, you should
easily have 999+ N power. Just a note.
Difficulty (W/Good item+N): 2
Difficulty (W/Fire Shield): 7

Level 4: Some Flying Guy
If you're smart, and good at the game, you should enter this boss with full
health, 999 N, and Homing Fireballs.
If you happened to get the fire-shield near the end, however, you're in for
some fun.
With the fireballs, stay near the left side of the level and just shoot shoot
shoot! At about 4/7th of the boss' health taken away, he should start a new
pattern. He'll drop from the top-right side of the level to the center, shoot,
fly to the top-left, and do a weird half-circle like flight to the top-right
side again, and repeat. With the Homing Fireballs, just stay at the left side,
and shoot until he dies, occasionally ducking to avoid the fire.

If you have the shield, you're in for a different story. My best advice is to
get him down to his second pattern of attack, while taking as little damage as
possible. If you get him to his second attack pattern, you are perfectly fine.
Boot it to the right side of the level. Head out a tiny bit, and you should hit
the 'Sweet Spot'. When he fires his attack, just duck to avoid it, and when
he's making his flight back to the top-right corner, you should be in such a
position that you can sword or sheild attack him without getting hurt.
Keep looking, but eventually you'll get to the sweet spot.
Difficulty (W/Homing): 2
Difficulty (W/Anything else): 5

Level 5: The Ice Monster
If you got every capsule, then you should have Homing Fireballs, which will
make this boss the easiest yet. If you don't have the fireballs, then it's a
tad tougher, but nothing to write home about.

With the Homing Fireballs, the strategy is simple. USE THE HOMING FIREBALLS!
Jump to avoid his 2 throwing attacks, and don't worry about the ice-block
attack. Stay on the top-middle platform and you'll be laughing.

Without the Homing Fireballs, I suggest using whatever Attack Item you have to
shoot this guy at long distances. Getting close to him is a big no-no.
Hopefully, you won't have the Fire Shield, and you can just pick him off with
Shurikens.

If you have a Fire Sheild, then the only prime-time to attack this guy is when
he teleports to the bottom-middle platform. When he's on the bottom-middle
platform, go near the left edge of the top-middle platform and drop down into a
hang and attack him with your sword.
Difficulty (W/Homing): 1
Difficulty (W/Shield): 4
Difficulty (W/Anything Else): 6

Level 6: The Statue
Alright, no matter what item you have, this guy will take a long time.
His pattern is this:
Drop down to where you were just standing, leave a few seconds open to get hit,
smash the ground, and fall into lava. Repeat until dead.

This guy is more of a pain than tough, although he can kill you in 1 move. To
counter-act this, always make him drop down at the far corners of the level.
This means standing there until you see him in the sky. Once he's down, you can
either stay near him and hit him with your sword, or fall back and shoot him
with an Item. Either way, he will smash the ground, causing a lot of the ground
to disappear. Smashing the ground also results in spikes falling from the top
of the level. Avoid those as best you can, and keep running from side to side,
and he will eventually die. If you are really unlucky, and this can happen to
the best of us, you will get hit by a spike and fall into the gaping hole in
the ground, and have to start over.
Difficulty: 7, due to the fact that 1 wrong move can kill you instantly.

Level 7: The Shogun of Darkness

1st Form: This isn't too difficult, and it's somewhat like the Tsutenkaku
Samurai, so use the same basic strategy. If you were smart, you should've
entered the battle with 1000+ N and Homing Fireballs. If you didn't, there's
two things I need to say.
One: What the hell were you thinking? Did you not learn anything from the past
6 bosses? Once you get the homing fireballs, NEVER get another Attack item!
Peroid!
Two: Use whatever you have to the best of your knowledge.
Difficulty: 7

2nd Form: Since this boss has 2 forms, it's best to go in with more than 1
life. After the original form, it's probably best if you die, just so you can
be at full health.
Aside from that, this guy is hard.
First, he will send some slight homing attacks at you from the sky. After four
or so of those, he will let loose four lightning attacks, so keep moving.
Then, he will go to the ground and attack from there. The only way to avoid him
when he's at ground level is to jump off the walls, or find a spot where he
will float right above you.
In addition to being tough to avoid, he will attack you with the homing attacks
again, followed by more lightning.
Once he's done down there, he'll repeat the process.

So, how do I hurt him?

Well, the obvious answer would be Homing Fireballs *grin*
...
Of course, you might not have those. Thus, if you're playing on an emulator,
your Save State button will get quite the workout. To hit him while he's in the
air, you need to jump off a wall at the exact right time, and be able to hit
him in mid-air without being hurt. If you do this, Save State!
Try and do this twice before he lets loose the lightning. After the fourth
bolt, try and attack him again before he gets on the ground.
It is virtually impossible to attack him on the ground without getting yourself
hurt, so don't even try. Just wait it out, and he'll eventually be in the air
again.
Repeat this strategy until he's pretty close to dead.

At this point, if you want, you can be cheap and toast him (health permitting)
with the Attack-All attack (Button 1 + Button 2) which will hurt him. I,
however, prefer to use the Attack-All three times at the very beginning of the
battle, and try not to get hit for the rest of the battle.
When I first beat him (without Homing Fireballs), I had 1 health left.
When I beat him on the second playthrough (with Homing Fireballs), I was left
with 3/4 of my Health.

Difficulty (W/Homing): 6
Difficulty (W/O Homing): 10

So, what did we learn from all this?
Once you get the Homing Fireballs for the first time, NEVER get another Attack
item. Ever.

head. A person in the background is falling back with a rifle flying out of his
hands.

 Ryu Hayabusa is a descendent
of a clan of Dragon Ninjas
who have kept the peace
in Japan for generations.
One day he received the news
that his home village,
the Dragon Village,
was attacked by someone.
He hurried home
to take care of things.

 The Bushido is an Ancient
Scroll that has been handed
down through generations

According to Ryu's,
ancestors whoever summoned
these powers could
even counquer the world.

 Ryu whipped out his
Dragonsword which is also
endowed with such powers.
He swore to himself

it's probably
at that Tsutenkaku
Samurai's place in Osaka."

> Ryu Hayabusa
 "What? Tsutenkaku?"

 Ryu knew this name.
Tsutenkaku was the name

And you're no exception!"

you must be the... Shogun."

> The Shogun of Darkness
 "Don't worry,
I won't kill you right away.
You're still going to

 The Shogun stared at
the Geisha with eyes

these words as it
disintegrated quickly and
disappeared from the ground.
At the same time, the castle
of darkness began to crumble.

> Ryu Hayabusa
"This whole place

Let's get out of here.
Fast!"

> The Geisha

> Ryu Hayabusa
"I don't know.
He may appear again

but I'll get him
next time too!
