UPDATES

10-2-2002 : Re-wrote a large part of the Questing portion in the
walkthrough. It is hopefully more comprehensive! Version 0.3 ready!
4-2-2002 : Finished the Characters! Version 0.2 ready!
27-2-2002 : I added some more to the How to Play section.
26-2-2002 : I'm slowly adding the cards of each character at the start
of each game.
17-2-2002 : Hmm, I played some more and added the Parameter Cards. The
How to Play section is nearing completion, however I think there's still
the weapons left...also the walkthrough is quite done.
16-2-2002 : The Walkthrough is almost finished, but I'm not sure of a
few portions, which I left out for a while.
15-2-2002 : Started the FAQ. Wrote down the Walkthrough and started on
the How to Play section.

WHO AM I?
My nick is Schlave, so just have it as that. I never thought I'd see the
day when I'd take up the task of making a FAQ for another Japanese game,
but after figuring it out (with lots of help from Archaeopterix) I
decided that making a guide on how to play it would be good. The guide,
of course, is still a little incomplete.
Wild Card is a unique RPG - like its name, it's almost a card game. Your
attacks, defences, commands are all on cards. Your character, teammates
and enemies are all on cards. Locations and landmarks are all on cards.
Your quests and requirements are all on...cards. However, it's unique
not just for that, but for the many possibilities of your quests. There
are many characters, and each of them have certain quests to fulfill
(whether they are the same or not, I don't know), and enemies and items
pop up randomly. Other RPGs like Chrono Cross (PSX) or Golden Sun (GBA)
feature world maps and all that for easier navigation - but Wild Card's
system of navigation hails back to the simple times of the RPG: a word-
based system of navigation. You get to pick which landmarks you go to.
Instructions and all that come up as you go around. It is much harder
for people who don't know Japanese (or a Japanese-related language like
Chinese), because of all the instructions. I cannot translate everything
- the description of the 930 cards, the 110 rumors, the exact details of
each of the 110+ quests - but I made this guide for people to have at
least a good knowledge of how the game is like, and to possibly explore
the intricacies. The walkthrough contains the basic steps to playing the
game and completing the quests of the game.
I am aware once again that I have close to no knowledge of Japanese. But
that will not stop me from attempting to clarify doubts about how to
play this game.

HOW TO PLAY

Once more, Square has made a whole new type of RPG. It's a card game!
Nope, it's an RPG! Seriously, though, all RPG elements in Wild Card are
put onto cards. This means you!

1. Basic Action
===============
To navigate around the areas, you first highlight a character, then
press the B Button. 3 cards should pop up (if you haven't collected any
items) - a card which shows a boy with a green cape walking, a card
which shows a girl with a purple dress looking around, and a card which
shows a girl in a red blouse opening a door.

-----------
1.1 Proceed
-----------
The walking-boy card means "Proceed", which can either mean going
forward, or retreating to your most recent location.

----------
1.2 Search
----------
The looking-girl card means "Search". Extremely handy. You should do
this often, and in towns or the castle you will find people to talk with
or potential teammates. During a quests, searches will find you mainly
enemies or items.

----------
1.3 Action
----------
The opening-girl card means "Action", which really means everything else
from talking to (people) or picking up (items). When talking to people,
you an usually find people who tell you a rumor regarding a quest, or a
teammate who you can request to join your team.

2. Entering a Place
===================
When entering a place, highlight it first, then press A to select it and
then select "Yes" to enter. If it is forbidden, you will be forced back
out, otherwise you may enter. Sometimes it can branch out to a few more
places, so do the same to one of them (I don't think there's any
"Retreat" option though).

In an area, you can go ahead and use your Basic Actions - Proceed if you
want to get outta here, Search if you're looking for something in
particular or are just itching for a fight, and Action if you find
something or someone interesting.

3. Find your way around
=======================
No world map, sorry - you do all your navigation by selecting options
and cards with pictures of your destinations on them. If you don't know
Japanese (or Chinese at the very least to read some of the Kanji), then
you might feel a bit lost.

4. Your character
=================
Your character is unique - he/she/it has a special advantage in terms of
certain parameters (e.g. Joanna Waiden, with her high Skill, can use her
key-opening charm to open locked doors), and each one has a selection of
attacks to pick from (to see the parameters, look to the section
Parameter Cards in this guide). To ask him to attack something, press A
while the character is highlighted and select a card. While highlighted,
a card has a number shown on it, e.g. x4. This is the number of times
you can use this card. When it runs out, the card is taken away from the
list.

5. Battles
==========
When you encounter an enemy, you or the enemy may be the first one to
attack.

---------------------
5.1 You are Attacked!
---------------------
If the enemy attacks you, you choose which character to be attacked. The
amount of red hearts denotes the character's remaining health points,
the number below the hearts denotes his defence against that particular
attack. When you pick the character, numbers will start scrolling. This
is the strength of the enemy's attack, and it varies according to the
time when you press the A Button.

-------------------------
5.2 You Attack the Enemy!
-------------------------
The amount of damage done to the character or enemy is calculated by
dividing the attack of the attacker by the defence of the defender,
rounding down any fractional values. The monster's defence against that
particular attack is counted by his number of cards; your's is just a
number. Let's say a monster's attack value is 8, and your defence is 3 -
you will suffer two hearts of damage. Certain characters have excellent
defence against certain attacks, and if you can afford to, put them
forward first. Sometimes, the enemy puts forward a more powerful weapon,
with a range of numbers ending in a larger value. Be careful!

----------------
5.3 Damage Dealt
----------------
When attacking the enemy, numbers will also start scrolling, and the
range depends on your attack. This is usually shown when you first
select the attack card with the A button, e.g. 3 - 10. THEN the numbers
will start scrolling when you press A again, and the strength of attack
depends on when you press A to stop the scrolling. Once again, the rule
of defence applies to the enemy, and if your attack does not exceed your
enemy's defence value (it is not shown, however) it will fail.

------------
5.4 Run Away
------------
However, you could also choose to run away, if you think you cannot cope
with the enemy. The card is often shown as a man running away. Once
again, the card has an "escape value", which is, once more, a range of
numbers. How high it is denotes your chances of getting away.

6. Your characters' cards
=========================
When you finish a quest, you will receive 3 values - the second one, the
middle one, is the amount of "card points" you get. This amount depends
on whether you finished your mission, what treasure you recovered while
on your mission, and the monsters you killed. The points are more or
less split equally among you and your teammates, depending on how many
teammates you have.

----------------
6.1 Battle Cards
----------------
If you ultimately feel that your character has far too few attacks or
defences, you may use the number of card points split equally among your
teammates to add to the number of cards of the chosen battle card. You
do this by highlighting a specific card from the menu and pressing A. If
there are several of the same cards in the menu, it means you may add
more cards of that card more than once, if you have extra points. It
means you have more opportunity to increase the amount of battle cards
you have.

-------------------
6.2 Parameter Cards
-------------------

6.2.1 Parameter cards you want more of
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Any remaining points are spent on "parameter cards" - cards with all
sorts of daemons and gods/goddesses on them. They represent the various
statistics of your character - body, skill, wisdom, strength etc. With
whatever remaining card points you have, select the parameter cards you
want. After that, the game will exit to the main menu, so open your game
again and go back to where you were.

6.2.2 Assigning the Cards
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Before starting a new quest, go to town or the castle, and go to a place
like the tavern. When the cursor highlights your characters, press B,
and you will see the Basic Action Cards (you know, Proceed, Search,
Action) as well as the parameter cards you have chosen in your previous
quest(s).

Pick a card, and you will allowed to assign the card to a character.
When a character is highlighted, a value appears, showing how much of
that parameter card (or how beneficiary they are in that area) the
character has. The more, the merrier. For example, if you notice one of
your characters is really weedy in terms of health, give him a Life
card. That is how you upgrade your characters' parameters.

7. Weapon, armor and magic elements
===================================
All of your character's attacks are categorised into one of the magic or
weapon elements. They are listed here:

Magic: Fire, Wind, Earth, Water, Dark and Light.
Weapon: Hand-to-hand, Sword, Club, Rapier, Spear, Bow, Axe
Armor: Gauntlet, Padded Gauntlet, Shield, Leather Armor

Certain characters start off with a weapon which allows them to do
certain attacks to do with their weapons, e.g. Ayashi's Double Spear
Thrust means he starts off with a spear in his inventory. Weapons
usually strengthen your physical attacks a little.

Other characters use mainly magic to get by. This magic is classified
into, as mentioned, Fire, Wind, Earth, Water, Dark and Light. If you
can't understand the Japanese, look at the picture on the card. It's
usually self-explanatory.

Some enemies are prone to certain types of magic attacks. Use this to
your advantage, and remember their weaknesses so you are not faced up
with unnecessary difficulty.

7. Healing and Ailments
=======================
Every character starts off with a Herb to heal a single heartof health
of an injured character.

There are three healing items:
- Medicinal Herb, which heals physical injury. It looks like a small
plant with green leaves and brown shoots.
- Antidote Herb, which heals poison. It looks like a small plant with
purple leaves and green shoots.
- Multi-Purpose Elixir, which heals poison, Sleep, Stone, and Stun.

Your characters can also be stricken by various ailments which disable
them in a way. Physical Inury is, well, just loss of health due to a
slash or a bite or some blow to a sword.

-------------------
7.1 Physical Injury
-------------------
As in the number of hearts you have left after being attack by physical
attacks like bites or slashes. The simplest form of injury - just use
the Herb to cure.

----------
7.2 Poison
----------

------------------
7.3 Stun/Petrified (?)
------------------
When a character is stunned or petrified, he/she/it will be disabled for
one battle. After the battle, he/she/it will be back to normal.
Alternatively, if you are fighting a boss battle, you could use the
Multi-Purpose Potion to heal this ailment.

---------
7.3 Stone
---------

7. The Album
============
At the main menu of the game, the very start when you first turn the
Wonderswan Colour on with the cartridge inside, you should see an option
besides New Game/Load Game etc. It's called the Album. What is it? It's
a collection of all 930 cards you can find in the game, be it enemy,
location, quest, civilian, character, attack, action etc. As you
progress, you will find more and more cards, and once you find them all,
you know you've truly completed the game!

The cards don't have much importance, but they do make you feel chuffed.
However, to get all those cards I trust you have to play the game
through many times to finish all 110+ quests and go through allll the
enemies. It's insane, but worth it...

CHARACTERS

This is a list of 9 characters you can start off with after answering
the questions thrown at you by the woman at the start of the game. The
cards are in order when you access them, and the "translations" are
really just deduced meanings from the card picture and partly from any
of the Kanji in the descriptions. There are likely to be mistakes, so
mail me when you see any please!

WALKTHROUGH

Wild Card is very complex, and there are hundreds of possibilities on
how your quest can turn out. There is no fixed route, no fixed team, and
items and creatures randomly pop up all over the place, thus making a
walkthrough on all the possible combinations is impossible. All I can
tell you is how to go about your quest, because it's easy to get lost in
the mountain of options.

1. Choose a save slot
=====================
At the very start, you will be given a choice of three slots to save in.
Pick one, and you will start the game!

2. Choosing your Character
==========================
When you first start up the game, you see a woman with cards. She will
ask you question upon question, based on the various parameters that
make up a character (for more details, see the Parameter Cards section).
At the end of several questions, you will be given a character based on
your choices and best suits you.

3. Finding Teammates and Quests
===============================
Next step is to look for teammates and a quest to embark upon. You will
be given a choice of two landmarks at the start: a Palace, or the old
Town. In each landmark, there are several places you can go. Some of
these branch into a few more places, and you can visit these and have a
tonguewag with the locals, accept quests, listen to rumors, or find
teammates by searching among the places.

For the non-Japanese speaking players (like me), knowing whether a
person is a potential teammate or just a chinwagger who gives you a
quest (more than 110 of them!) is quite hard. At such times, you can
only guess. If you find a teammate/talk to a commoner, two options will
pop up below. The top one is usually "Yes" (or in its context), so if
you find a teammate, his/her card will slide into place and line up with
your character's. If you get a quest, the shown card will reverse and
slide downwards off the screen. But you can also refuse quests (if you
think you are stockpiling too many) and teammates (though I'm not sure
why you want to). However, there are cases when you request for someone
to join you, and instead he/she leaves. I'm not sure why.

4. Starting a Quest
===================
Go back all the way to the main menu and pick your chosen save slot.
BING! You get the choice of quests given to you. Pick one at your own
risk. You have got to decide which quest suits your characters best,
otherwise you will paint yourself into a corner.

5. Questing
===========
There are three types of quests, all of which their difficulty differs.
I shall list a general walkthrough with hints and tips for each scenario
type.

-----------------------
5.1 Destroy the Monster
-----------------------
Card Appearance:
A man with armor and helmet holding a bow.

Objectives:
You are supposed to hunt down and destroy a certain fearsome beast which
is much stronger than the other enemies you will encounter along the
way. When you reach the place where the monster is, a big red "Alert!!"
sign will flash on your screen.

Characters preferred:
- Dai Yang; strong at physical attack
- Nang L'gan; excellent for enemies prone to fire, also has good magic
attack
- Clementine Holyday; good at physical attack, can scale walls
- Arashi; can swim, good at physical attack, can scale walls
- Maria Salzburg; various magical attacks

Comments, Hints and Tips:
In truth, Destroy the Monster is pretty hard, in the sense that the
mosnter will be difficult to vanquish. You must also find an essential
weakness in the monster which will enable you to destroy it easier,
because if physical attacks don't do much on it, it just will not do to
keep pounding physical attacks on it. Have a magical character or two
around to test what element the monster is prone to, then keep pounding
it until it is destroyed.

Bring characters with excellent physical and/or magical attack along. If
you bring characters like No-Name at the start, you will not survive
very long.

-----------------
5.2 Find the Item
-----------------
Card Appearance:
A chest, key and a few other items on a table.

Objectives:
You are to journey around, overwhelming obstacles and find a secret item
which is unknown to most.

Characters preferred:
- Joanna "Souris" Waiden; good key picking technique
- Arashi; good physical attack, can swim and scale walls
- Clementine Holyday; good at physical attack, can scale walls
- Ekaterina deVors; good protection with magic, can talk to animals

Comments, Hints and Tips:
Journey to a Destination is one of the hardest types of mission, I will
have you know. It is no joke really; there are few characters who have
the ability to overcome barriers and have powerful attacks. Yet you need
every single bit of extra talent to get past. Scale Wall, Swim, Open
Locks, make sure you have these.

You will know you have encountered a barrier from looking at the card
itself. That is not very helpful, but if you find yourself looking at a
rock or a door and you attempt to Proceed, you will find that the
Proceed card which slides forward over the card with the barrier slides
backwards off the screen. That is a barrier, and you can go ahead and
try one of the barrier-overcoming techniques. Without those techniques,
you will keep walking around in circles until your time runs out.

----------------------------
5.3 Journey to a Destination
----------------------------
Card Appearance:
A cliff with some words at the bottom of the card.

Objectives:
You are to journey around, and find a secret location which is unknown
to most.

Characters preferred:
- Clementine Holyday; good physical attack
- Dai Yang; excellent physical attack
- Lottery; avoid unnecessary battles by running away
- Nang L'gan; excellent magical attack

Comments, Hints, and Tips:
The easiest type of quest I know. Just walk around to different places
and you will soon find the place you are looking for. You could also
search every place you go to, just in case you find some treasure. Bring
along a powerful warrior to hold off threats, or just run away if
possible.

7. Completing a Quest
=====================
Of course, the quest ends when you accomplish your mission. If you are
assigned to a quest in which you hunt down a monster and destroy it,
your mission is finished.

If you are on a find-the-place mission, all you do is to walk around,
vanquishing monsters in your way, until you find the place. That is when
your mission ends.

If you are supposed to find an item, you'll need to have people who can
get past locks, barriers and sorts, and when you find the item in
demand, your mission is complete.

After that, you're awarded card and parameter points. Refer to the "How
to Play" section "Your Characters' Cards" to learn how to do this.

PARAMETER CARDS

These are the statistics, the very bread and butter of your characters
which enables them to survive. You can change these parameters to better
suit your characters' needs for certain quests when you win points for
accomplishing the goal of a quest. Be sure to allocate your points well!

The more cards you have of that kind of parameter, the more beneficiary
your character is in that area.

Life
====
Description: Shows an angel holding up a heart.

The higher the amount of Life cards you have, the higher the amount of
hearts, or health points, your party has in total.

Strength
========
Description: Shows a muscular blue demon.

The higher the number of Strength cards, the higher your characters'
attack powers are.

Body
====
Description: Shows a stocky bull with golden horns.

Your characters have higher defence and are better suited for
withstanding stronger physical attacks when they have a higher amount of
Body cards.

Agility
=======
Description: Shows a long-haired demon jumping in the air with gloves
and a quarterstaff.

Your characters will be able to dodge hits that would have floored them
more often if they are equipped with a higher amount of Agility cards..

Skill
=====
Description: Shows a blue daemon opening a lock with a key.

When you have a higher amount of Skill cards, your characters have an
easier job in breaking open locks, getting past certain barriers etc.
Also, using a single battle card, they can perform the action more than
once (i.e. the range of numbers scroll more than once), resulting in a
larger value due to the totalling up of the several values. This makes
it easier for your character to run away from or tackle an enemy.

Intelligence
============
Description: Shows a grey daemon with red hair deep in thought.

(I'm not so sure about this one...)

Influence
=========
Description: Shows a woman devil with long red arms and small red wings.

(I'm not so sure about this one...)

Empathy (?)
=======
Description: Shows a fairy on a flower.

(I'm not so sure about this one...)

Special Ability
===============
Description: Shows a goddess pouring some green liquid.

I guess each character has his own unique trait which can be enhanced if
the number of special ability cards is high.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

These are questions which are commonly mailed to me every day. To get
them straight, I have this section so I won't have to KEEP REPLYING to
the same old message. It does get boring. :-)

Q: Translate the whole game PLEASE!
A: I can't. Sorry.

Q: At least why can't you put a few translations?
A: I have put more than a few translations. It's just that I don't have
a Japanese input software, and I can only read Kanji (in the Chinese
way).

Q: What do all 930 cards say?
A: !!! well, I don't know more than half of them !!!

Q: There are more than 9 characters in the game.
A: I know that. But I just put in the 9 characters because they are what
you choose from at the start of the game.

Q: Where's the ROM?
A: I can't, and I won't say.

Q: PLEEEASE! I NEED THE ROM!
A: Pray to God, but I can't, and won't say.

If you want to ask me something, you can reach me at
ernestho@magix.com.sg or ICQ. My ICQ number is 70345585, but I don't
usually use ICQ that much. Only ask questions regarding this game, and
questions which have not been listed here. If you disobey both of these,
I will not reply to your mail and delete you from the Contact List.

CREDITS

This section is dedicated to all people who pass me information which I
don't know. If you donated quite a lot of (unverified) stuff (and some
stuff I might have forgotten to put into "Stuff I Need", and if you
notice it's not anywhere in the FAQ or "Stuff I Need" send it anyway)
and you don't see yourself here, don't throw a tantrum at me. I respond
to polite e-mails regarding this, and unless a problem occurs, I will be
replying in about 1 - 2 days, less if you're lucky.

If you donate false information, YOU WILL BE DESTROYED (and the same
goes for your place in the credits if you have one). You have been
warned. This FAQ is for the public and in no way do I want it to be
inaccurate.

Stuff I Need
============
- Any mistakes in any translations...? I'm sure there should be some.
- I'm sure there's more armor types somewhere. I'll go check it out
sometime. Unless someone beats me to it.
