that bridges the North and South areas.
0.7- Added some enemy info and the URL for my scanned maps. (making them
manually takes way too long). Other random stuff added.

My Review

Sure, this game is old, and you know your quest right from the
beginning, but it's far from linear. The king just gives you a key, some
money and a torch, and from there you're on your own.

This game is really slow-paced, so don't expect to finish it in a day,
either. People seem to like the series a lot, but IMO the first one is
by far the best. It seems to have a sort of old-school charm not seen in
any of its sequels (that were released state-side, anyway).

It's a very enjoyable game if you're a patient gamer, and well worth
buying since you can get it for about $5.

Story

Long ago, a great knight named Erdrick fought monsters with a mighty
Ball of Light. He defeated the Dragon Lord and saved the land of
Alefgard. Several hundred years later, the dark fortress of Charlock
reappeared, and monsters ran loose again. Worst of all, Princess Gwaelin
had vanished. But a young stranger came to the king, claming to be a
descendant of Erdrick. The king allowed him to fight the evil and
perhaps defeat the Dragon Lord.

Thanks to Nintendo Power's Dragon Warrior Strategy Guide for the story,
which I rewrote.

Weapons List

Bamboo Pole Cost: 10 Gold Weapon Power: +2
The lowdown: This is a really crappy weapon. Don't bother with this one
at all. Buy the Club instead, it's worth the extra cost. This one can be
bought in Brecconary and Cantlin.

Club Cost: 60 Gold Weapon Power: +4
The lowdown: This should be the first weapon you buy. It's pretty weak,
but will prove to be useful toward the beginning of the game. This one
can be found in Brecconary, Garinham and Cantlin.

Copper Sword Cost: 180 Gold Weapon Power: +10
The lowdown: Three times the cost of the Club, but 2.5 times the attack
power. A good weapon for the first part of the game. This weapon can be
bought in Brecconary, Cantlin, Garinham, Kol and Rimuldar.

Hand Axe Cost: 560 Gold Weapon Power: +15
The lowdown: A good weapon that will prove useful until you can buy the
Broad Sword. Its price is also relatively low. This one can be bought in
Garinham and Rimuldar.

Broad Sword Cost: 1500 Gold Weapon Power: +20
The lowdown: This weapon is somewhat expensive, but has high attack
power. This weapon can be bought in Rimuldar and Cantlin.

Flame Sword Cost: 9800 Gold Weapon Power: +28
The lowdown: This is the second best weapon in the game, and will prove
useful against tough enemies like Dragons. This weapon can be bought in
Cantlin.

Erdrick's Sword Cost: Can't buy Weapon Power: +40
The lowdown: This is the only weapon that can destroy the Dragon Lord,
and will do heavy damage against other monsters with its massive attack
power. Be sure that you pick this one up! It can be found in Charlock.

Armor List

Clothes Cost: 20 Gold Defense Power: +2
The lowdown: I wouldn't reccomend buying this at the start of the game.
Many guides do, but I would rather skip straight to the Leather Armor.
This can be bought in Brecconary if you want it, though.

Leather Armor Cost: 70 Gold Defense Power: +4
The lowdown: This one is definitely better than the Clothes. It will be
the best armor you get for a while, so get it ASAP. It can be bought in
Brecconary and Garinham.

Chain Mail Cost: 300 Gold Defense Power: +10
The lowdown: This is a useful armor and is pretty affordable, too. It's
going to be a long time Half Plate, so buy this one as soon as you can.
It can be bought in Garinham and Cantlin.

Half Plate Cost: 1000 Gold Defesne Power: +16
The lowdown: This one is pretty expensive, but is worth buying since the
Full Plate is very costly. It can be bought in Garinham, Kol, Rimuldar
and Cantlin.

Full Plate Cost: 3000 Gold Defense Power: +24
The lowdown: Very heavy-duty armor. This armor is second in quality only
to Erdrick's Armor. Well worth buying. Schedule a stop in Kol, Rimuldar
or Cantlin to buy it.

Magic Armor Cost: 7700 Gold Defense Power: +24
The lowdown: Some may disagree with me, but I don't like this armor.
There's no defense bonus over the Full Plate. The only advantage to
getting it is the fact that you regenerate 1 HP every four steps. I
never found this bonus very useful, and I usually just skip this one in
favor of Erdrick's awesome armor.
(Thanks to mark2@pdt.net for the HP regeneration bit)

Erdrick's Armor Cost: Can't buy Defense Power: +28
The lowdown: This armor rocks! It makes you immune to the poison swamps
and magic barriers, you gain back 1 HP with every step you take, and
finally, it provides high defense power. You will find it in Hauksness.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Shield List

Small Shield Cost: 90 Gold Defense Power: +4
The lowdown: A good buy towards the beginning of the game. It will be
the only one you get for a LONG time, so make good use of it. It can be
bought in Brecconary or Kol.

Large Shield Cost: 800 Gold Defense Power: +10
The lowdown: A good buy once you get the money. This one provides a good
amount of defensive power, and is fairly affordable as well. It can be
bought in Garinham or Cantlin.

Silver Shield Cost: 14800 Gold Defense Power: +20
The lowdown: This shield is INCREDIBLY expensive, but provides a solid
20 defense power. It's a good buy towards the end of the game when you
have a ton of money burning a hole in your pocket. It can be bought only
in Cantlin.

Items List

General Items

Herb- Restores about 35-40 HP. Costs 24 Gold. You can carry a maximum of
six at a time.

Torch- Lights the eight panels immediately surrounding your character in
dark dungeons, so that you can look around. Costs 8 Gold. Once you have
the Radiant spell, Torches are pretty much useless.

Fairy Water- Keeps enemies away for a little while. Will not work in
dungeons. Costs 38 Gold. Once you get the Repel Spell, this item becomes
pretty useless too.

Dragon's Scale- Provides some defensive power. Costs 20 Gold. Be sure to
use it after you buy it so that your character equips it- it's useless
otherwise.

Fighter's Ring- Provides a small boost in attack power. Be sure to use
it to get the added boost. You can also adjust it by using it
repeatedly, although it doesn't do anything useful.

Wings- Returns you to Tantegel Castle instantly. Will not work
underground. Costs 70 Gold. Once you get Return, you can cast it
anytime, although you still may want to keep a Wing or two around in
case you are too low on MP to cast Return.

Magic Key- Opens locked doors. Can only be used once. The price will
either be 53, 85, or 98 Gold depending on where you buy them.

Vital Items

Erdrick's Tablet- Tells you of your quest to seek out the magical
objects.
Silver Harp- Attracts monsters. Good for going up levels, but later you
will need to trade it for another valuable item (a shame, too- you can't
summon Metal Slimes or Stone Men endlessly to level up quicker).
Rain Staff- Magical item mentioned on Erdrick's Tablet.
Erdrick's Token- Proves your connection to Erdrick.
Stones of Sunlight- Magical item mentioned on the Tablet.
Rainbow Drop- The result of combining the Stones of Sunlight and Staff
of Rain.
Gwaelin's Love- Acts as a compass.
Flute- It is said to be able to tame the most fearsome beast.

Cursed Items

Cursed Belt- Will prevent you from entering Tantegel if you keep it. It
can be sold, though.
Death Necklace- Same effect as Cursed Belt. Can be sold for a good
amount of money.

* indicates that the spell can be used inside or outside of battle.
$ indicates that the spell can only be used in battle.
# indicates that the spell can only be used outside of battle.

(actually, you can use any spell at anytime, but they will be useless
unless you use them in their proper place. Casting "Hurt" in an area
with no enemies won't do you any good, for example.)

Hints

Stay in familiar territory until you're confident in your abilities. You
may run into dangerous enemies and not be able to fight them off if you
just blindly rush into situations.

Swamps take away 2 HP with every step.

Magic Barriers take away 15 HP with every step.

Talk to everyone. They often have valuable information.

Try to always have at least two keys handy.

Keep at least one pair of wings handy in case you get into a sticky
situation.

There is a person at Tantegel Castle that will restore your MP every
time you talk to him. Take advantage of this to heal up your character
and refill your MP, all without staying at an inn!

If you are cursed, you will not be able to save your game at Tantegel
Castle, or even get in for that matter. Talk to the wizard on the right-
hand side Brecconary. He should remove the curse. For free, too! Nice
guy.

Be sure to save your game after you go up a level. It would suck if the
power were to fail and you were to lose your game after two hours of
fighting enemies.

If you die, you'll lose half your money. This is a pain in the ass when
you're trying to save up for expensive items (like the Silver Shield),
so be careful in dangerous territory.

Your chances of meeting enemies while walking on the grass are
significantly lower than they are anywhere else.

Walkthrough (Spoilers ahead!) Use if you are stuck!

You start off with the king telling you your quest and yada yada. He
tells you to take the treasures. Do so to gain a Torch, a Key, and 120
Gold. Use the key to open the door and go down the stairs. Leave the
castle and head east to Brecconary. It's a short walk, so you shouldn't
be attacked on the way. If you are, just run for now.

Head up to the shop and buy a Club. Many people will tell you to buy the
Clothes as well, but don't bother with anything else for the moment. Now
head outside and beat the crap out of some Slimes until you get 10 Gold
(you'll level up on the way). Go back into town and buy the Leather
Armor. Now that you have some good weapons and armor, head out and fight
slimes until you get to Level 3. If you need to stop at the Inn a few
times, do so. It's only 6 gold pieces.

Once you're at Level 3, you'll be ready to explore. Feel free to walk
around farther up north, but look out for Magicians and Ghosts, they can
be dangerous. Use your Heal spell whenever you need it.

Up north, you should notice a cave. Enter and use the Torch to see where
you are going (check the map at www.gamefaqs.com if you need it). Go
downstairs and open the box to find Erdrick's Tablet, which will talk
about the three magical objects.

Return to the surface and fight to gain experience points. Buy the Small
Shield as soon as you save up 90 Gold, and the Copper Sword as soon as
you have another 180 Gold. Go East to fight tougher monsters, but be
sure to get to level 5 or 6 first. In the east you should find a town
named Kol. Search the ground four steps south of the square of water and
you should find the Flute.

Head west from Kol and between two mountains to find a stairway leading
down. Inside you'll find an old man who wants you to bring him the
Silver Harp. But since you don't have it yet, there's not much of
interest here.

Talk to the people in the southern part of town to learn about Rimuldar
in the south. While buying keys probably sounds tempting, don't try to
go down there until you get to Level 10. The enemies are very dangerous
to the south, and at your current level you won't stand a chance.
the bridge near Garinham and fight some enemies down there to level up.
They're pretty dangerous, so pack some Herbs and save your MP. Don't go
TOO far south of the bridge, though, or you'll get beaten up by really
mean enemies.

Once you get to Level 10, head through the cave south of Kol (see the
map at www.gamefaqs.com if you need to). When you re-emerge on land,
you'll notice some dangerous enemies, like Wolves. Try putting them to
sleep before attacking so that they don't fight back. Once you reach
Rimuldar, walk around the edge of town to the north (being careful not
to walk too far and leave) and then east, until you reach a small
building. Buy as many keys as you can carry.

Return to Tantegel Castle (note: DON'T open the locked door in the
tunnel yet!) and open the locked door behind the stairs that lead to the
king (don't open the one with the treasure chests, you'll gain a small
amount of gold and waste a key). Anyway, there's another key shop behind
the door, but that's not of importantance at the moment.

Talk to people to get information (talk to the guy behind the barrier if
you're brave and have a lot of HP and MP). Then go to the east of the
key shop and walk along the edge of the castle like you did in
Rimuldar. You should reach a staircase. Enter it and you'll find the
Stones of Sunlight, an item you'll need later.

You may want to return to the area near Rimuldar and fight some enemies.
Get to about level 12, then return to Garinham. I'd reccomend buying the
Large Shield or the Half Plate (or both) before continuing. Open the
locked door and walk along the northern wall, pushing Up at every square
(the guards in the locked room have nothing useful to say, so ignore
them). You should find one that you can walk through, so go through it.
You'll find a stairway on the other side, so go down it.

You'll be in the dungeon of Garinham (Check the map at
http://members.fortunecity.com/edthemoogle/maps if you need to). Look
around the dungeon until you find the Silver Harp. Now go back to the
old guy west of Kol and give it to him and you'll obtain the Staff of
Rain. Woohoo!

You may want to enter the cave south of Garinham. There are some pretty
good items in here, but it's not nessesary to win the game. It's a good
place to gain experience, though.

Now's the tough part. Get to about Level 16-19 before attempting this
(fight some Metal Slimes and Goldmen to gain a bunch of Exp.). Head
south of Garinham until you reach a small town. I reccomend having the
Hand Axe, Large Shield, and the Full Plate before going any farther (You
may want to use Repel or some Fairy Water on the way to preserve HP and
MP). Enter the town.

It seems that the Dragon Lord's minions have crushed this town, and
you'll be attacked frequently by Wyverns and other dangerous enemies.
Head to the eastern part of town. Look around and you'll eventually be
attacked by an Axe Knight. Note that if you run away, you'll back up one
square. It seems the Axe Knight is hiding something.

Fight and defeat him (use Stopspell so that he can't use Stopspell on
you). This will be a tough battle, but it will be well worth it. After
you defeat him, search the tree that he was guarding for Erdrick's
Armor, the best in the game! Poison swamps and barriers now have no
effect on you, and you get back 1 HP with every step! Sweeeeeet!

Now that you have Erdrick's Armor, you may want to proceed southeast to
reach Cantlin. Be sure to have 9800 Gold on hand so you can buy the
Flame Sword. If you don't, fight GoldMen south of Rimuldar, they tend to
give up over 200 Gold per battle! But be careful, they can prove to be
very tough.

Anyway, continue sort of east after you go south to reach Cantlin (you
may pass by a REALLY big swamp, just ignore it for now). But just as you
are about to enter Cantlin, Golem attacks! Use the Fairy Flute
immediately and he will fall asleep. Just hack away at him after that.
If he wakes up, immediately use the flute again. Well, that was easier
than it looked. Head inside Cantlin.

In here, buy the Flame Sword for a costly 9800 Gold. You can also talk
to Nintendo Power Magazine's old mascot here if you look around for him.
Other than that, there's not much of interest here (except a lot of
shops that sell mediocre equipment). Be sure to return here again after
you get 14800 gold to get the expensive Silver Shield.

But for now, head back to the tunnel (use Wings to make the trip much
shorter). that bridges the North and South. Open the door with a magic
key and go inside. You'll be attacked by a Green Dragon. Defeat it
(they're tough, be careful!) and you'll find Princess Gwaelin. You'll
have to carry her back to Tantegel Castle.

Once you arrive, the king will thank you. Talk to Gwaelin to get
Gwaelin's Love, a compass of sorts. This will come in handy later (it
also tells you how much experience you need to go up a level anytime you
want, which is handy)

Return to the big swamp that you passed by on the way to Cantlin, and
use Gwaelin's Love until you're at 70 South, 40 East. Search the ground
to find Erdrick's Token. Now head south of Rimuldar (Wings again) and
show it to the guy that was down the stairs. If you have the Staff of
Rain and the Stones of Sunlight, he'll give you the Rainbow Drop.

Head to the spot northwest of Rimuldar where the gap between the two
islands is only one square. Use the Rainbow Drop to make a bridge. Now
you can enter the Dragon Lord's castle! Just be sure to get to Level 20
before you enter (and pick up the Silver Shield first!).

When you enter, you'll meet some fierce enemies, like Green Dragons.
Think that's scary? Well, that's just the first floor! The worst is yet
to come! Check the square directly behind the throne (on a barrier) to
open a stairway. Go downstairs.

Down here, you'll meet mean enemies like Armored Knights, Blue and Red
dragons, Wizards, the whole nine yards. Look around for Erdrick's Sword,
you'll need it to win the game (Check the map at
http://members.fortunecity.com/edthemoogle/maps if you need it).

After you find the sword, keep going downstairs. If you run into a
hallway that goes in a constant loop, that's the wrong path. Go back up
a few floors and find another path down.

Eventually you'll reach a big, lit-up room. There's a few treasure boxes
on this floor, but nothing in them that you need at this point. This is
the room where the Dragon Lord is. Get to Level 25 or higher before you
try to take him on. Talk to him. He'll ask if you wish to become his
right-hand man. Accept and you will get the bad ending. Decline and he
will call you a fool and attack.

You'll first fight him in his human form. He can use some nasty attacks
like Hurtmore, but a few normal attacks will defeat him. Spells won't
work on him. He wasn't so tough!

But, just when you think you've won, he'll reveal his true form, a huge,
super-powerful, super-deadly, fire-breathing dragon! Just as before,
spells are ineffective, so save your MP for healing and attack with
Erdrick's Sword at every chance. This will be a tough battle (you'll
often have to heal every third turn or so), but you should succeed if
you are at Level 25 or higher. When you win, you'll see the good ending.

ENDINGS (Warning! Spoiler City!)

Bad Ending: You agree to become the Dragon Lord's servant, and then he
explains how half of the world is yours, and half is his. Then the game
stops. That's the end. Alefgard is screwed. (Note that you lose all your
Exp. and Gold).

Good Ending: You defeat the Dragon Lord and get the Ball of Light back,
and destroy all the evil monsters in Alefgard. You can go to the other
towns, but no one really has anything interesting to tell you.

Return to Tantegel and talk to the King, and he'll offer you his place
at the throne. You turn it down, and tell the King that if you were to
rule a country, it is one that you must find yourself. Gwaelin decides
to come with you (although I like to refuse her about a
7363987436487316743143643876543754537946547435 times just to see if she
won't come with me). Then all the guards pull out their trumpets and
start playing. Next, you see a screen that says, "Congratulations! Thou
hast restored peace unto the world. But there are many roads yet to
travel. May the light shine upon thee." Then the credits roll, and
that's the end to this fun old-school RPG. Now if I could only find a
copy of the Game Boy version so I can play it during my Study Hall...

Enemy List

Slime Group Exp. HP Gold

Slime 1 3 1
Red Slime 1 4 2
Metal Slime 115 6 6

Slimes are really nothing to worry about, except for those Metal Slimes,
they have extremely high defense, and can be trouble unless you are at a
high level. The Slimes and Red Slimes can usually be finished in a
single hit.

Mage Group Exp. HP Gold

Magician 4 13 12
Warlock 13 30 35
Wizard 50 165 65

Magicians should be your first real concern. They are capable of casting
various spells, such as StopSpell and Hurt. Use StopSpell on them
immediately to block out the worst of it, and hit them with a few
physical attacks to end the battle quickly.

Scorpion Group Exp. HP Gold

Scorpion 6 20 16
Metal Scorpion 14 22 40
Rouge Scorpion 26 35 110

Scorpions are fierce physical fighters early on, but later in the game
aren't much of a threat. Hit them hard and fast to put them away.

Wyvern Group Exp. HP Gold

Wyvern 24 42 100
MagiWyvern 34 58 140
StarWyvern 43 65 160

Skeleton Group Exp. HP Gold

Skeleton 11 30 30
Wraith 17 36 60
Wraith Knight 28 46 120
Shadow Knight 37 50 150

Skeletons are formidable fighters at lower to middle experience levels.
You will need a lot of experience to take them on.

Druin Group Exp. HP Gold

Druin 7 22 16
Druinlord 20 35 85

Druins are odd creatures that live in dungeons. They pack a good punch,
but shouldn't be too much trouble, especially at higher levels.

Droll Group Exp. HP Gold

Droll 10 25 25
Drollmagi 22 38 90

The goofy-looking Drolls aren't too much to be concerned about. Just
consider them slightly stronger Druins. Take them out quickly.

Knight Group Exp. HP Gold

Knight 33 55 130
Axe Knight 54 70 165
Armored Knight 70 90 140

Knights are fearsome fighters, especially those Armored Knights. They
are also capable of using StopSpell. They don't fool around, that much
is certain.

Drakee Group Exp. HP Gold

Drakee 2 6 3
Magidrakee 5 15 12
Drakeema 11 20 20

Drakees can't take much damage before dying, but they can use spells
against you like Sleep and Hurt, which may be troublesome early on.

Ghost Group Exp. HP Gold

Ghost 3 7 5
Poltergeist 8 23 18
Specter 18 36 70

Ghosts can put you to sleep, so try and take them out before that
happens. They aren't too much of a threat outside of their sleep spells.

Wolf Group Exp. HP Gold

Wolf 16 34 50
Wolflord 20 38 80
Werewolf 40 60 155

Wolves are fierce fighters throughout the game. Use Sleep on them as
soon as you can.

Golem Group Exp. HP Gold

Golem 5 70 10
Goldman 6 50 200
Stoneman 65 160 140

Golems are tough to beat, as their high HP and attack power make them
very dangerous.

Dragon Group Exp. HP Gold

Green Dragon 45 65 160
Blue Dragon 60 70 140
Red Dragon 100 100 140

Dragons are the most dangerous characters in the game, other than the
Dragon Lord himself. The Red Dragons are especially fierce. You'll have
to have a lot of fighting experience to take them on. They also give out
a bunch of EXP when defeated, making them a helpful source of experience
late in the game.

Boss Group Exp. HP Gold
Dragon Lord 0 50* 0
Dragon Lord 2 0 600* 0

*Note: These are only estimates.

The Dragon Lord is the final, and most dangerous, enemy in the game. He
is immune to pretty much every spell you can possibly use against him,
and dishes out some major damage with his fiery attacks. The key to
defeating him is to use the legendary weapon that is sealed away within
his fortress, and heal constantly.

Other Stuff

Remember the guy that asked about Nester? You can find Nester in
Cantlin. This is actually an inside joke. Nester is Nintendo Power
Magazine's old mascot (he was retired somewhere in the 60-70th issue
range, but made a cameo in issue 100).

I've heard somewhere that you can get the Ball of Light before fighting
the Dragon Lord. Any truth behind it? Because I sure as hell haven't
found out how.
