They're back...once again, our Super Robot heroes from ages past, from
the undefined future, from our wildest dreams unite to save the world,
kicking tons of metallic ass! </figurative speech>

        This is the highly-anticipated sequel of Banpresto's biggest
franchise, Super Robot Wars. The Alpha edition (released May 2000)
changed peoples' mindsets about the animation of the units in the game,
and the stoid, stagnant story, and drew tons of new anime fans, along
with old super robot fans who have followed the series faithfully since
the inception of them back in the days of the Nintendo Famicom.

       Needless to say, this sequel will draw even more fans with the
introduction of 4 new series, 2 old and 2 new. There have been lots of
changes in the game in the intervenening year, with the introduction
of new systems and the kicking away of old ones. But I've talked enough.

It's now time to understand the power of the super robots in your
living room!

That's exactly the same feeling I'm having as I type this out......

The Flow of the Game....
========================

This is a simulation game people, meaning, all talk, all battle, no
action. If you were expecting some beat-em-up with big robots, go play
Virtual On instead. This is not the type you're looking for.

Basically the game has several phrases:

 - Scenario Demo     - Where lengthy conversations are held (IOW
|                      Building up the storyline).
|
=> Map Screen        - Where you get to see enemy units you're about to
|                      crush with your puny fingers.
|
=> Unit Placement    - Where you get to choose your weapons of
|                      destruction to fly out and do your bidding.
|                      Remember, NOTHING is realistic here.
|
=> Battle            - Player Phase, enemy phase, player phase, enemy
|                      phase...where you're doing the killing, or
|                      getting killed (which might be true :P)
|
=> Scenario End demo - More conversations. More story told.
|
=> Intermission      - Where you can do lots of stuff before the
                       horrendous boring cycle repeats itself over and
                       over and over and over again.......

Controls
========

There actually isn't much to learn about controls. Instead the most
important point of using the controller is this:

SOFT RESET: Press Start, Select, L1, L2, R1 and R2 together anytime to
            soft reset the game. Holding on to Select while soft
            resetting will automatically load the Continue file without
            having to start from the main menu again.

Or in other words, the new systems.

                         Difficulty Levels
=======================================================================

Contary to what many people are thinking right now, you CANNOT CHOOSE
the difficulty level. It is NOT FOUND anywhere in the game, there is NO
WAY for you to start off at Hard, Easy or Normal.

Instead, the difficulty level is dependent on your current Ability
Points. The more points you have, the harder the difficulty. The game
automatically decides the difficulty by checking your current points
total with its points cut-off point.

While there isn't any concrete method of knowing WHERE exactly the cut-
off points are, it is definately easy to know that you'll forever be in
Easy if your points are at 0 all the way, and you'll definately be in
Hard if you managed to get all the points available.

                          Stat Increaments
=======================================================================

Those who have played SRW Alpha would remember that pilot stats would
increase as they continously used certain traits (eg. Long Range would
increase with the continued usage of Shooting weapons). In Alpha Gaiden
the same stats, and new ones, have been changed slightly.

The following tables for stat increaments are, at the moment, dependent
on my own perceptions and the perceptions of the owner of Wind of La
Giers. Until the official data is released, please follow this table
with a pinch of salt, as I cannot say that it is 100% accurate.

Note that the stat stated will increase by 1 once you have 20 points
per table points system. Also note that each stat can only be increased
for a maximum of 50 points.

Remember: Each stat can only be increased in this manner by a MAXIMUM
          of 50 points.

                              Assist
=======================================================================

Assist was first introduced in the WonderSwan's SRW Compact series, and
incorporated into the console SRWs for the first time. Naturally, those
who do not have the WonderSwan or played SRW Compact will have a hard
time understanding the simple yet complicated system.

Pilots will learn Assist levels as they increase in level. Naturally,
some pilots are better equipped than others to learn the skills. It is
completely natural to see pilots (noticably females) with poorer stats
to learn Assist because they'll be best at supporting attacks and
taking damage.

Q. How to activate Assist Attack?

A. Once a pilot learns the Assist skill, he/she can start assisting
   attacks. To activate it, the Assister MUST

 1. Be positoned NEXT TO the attacker. Not diagonally, not 5 spaces
    away. NEXT TO.

    - In other words, the assister must be in any one of the 4 squares
      (numbered 1-4) next to the attacker, as shown below, where A is
      the attacker:

 2. NOT have moved or performed any kind of action that leads to the
    end of its turn (eg. Moving or Attacking). Using spells is
    allowed though.

    - In other words, once a unit has ended its turn, it cannot assist
      (as shown by the greying out of the unit on the map).

 3. HAVE a weapon that is actually in range of the attacker's target.
    You can't have a pilot assist when the target is 7 squares away,
    and your longest-ranged weapon is 5.

 4. NOT have used up all his/her assists, which depends on his/her
    Assist level.

    - In other words, if a pilot is at Assist Lv2, he/she can only
      Assist TWICE per phase, either helping 2 units to attack, or
      blocking 2 attacks.

 5. Be of the same elevation, or has at least the same elevation as
    the attacker.

    - In other words, if the attacking unit is in the air (eg. Gundam
      Airmaster MA) a unit on the ground that is unable to fly (eg.
      Xabungle) will be unable to assist. On the other hand, if a unit
      can fly but is on the ground (eg. Voltes V), the assist will
      still be in effect.

Q. When Assisting Attacks, what will happen?

A. The assister will AUTOMATICALLY choose the weapon to assist. You
   CANNOT choose the weapon. The weapon the assister chooses will be in
   this order of priority:

   1. Within range
   2. Enough to defeat enemy unit at its CURRENT HP.
   3. Do the maximum damage to the enemy.

   Therefore if an enemy is 3 squares away from assister in, for
   example, Z Gundam, and has a current HP of 3875, the pilot assisting
   the attack will AUTOMATICALLY choose to use the Hyper Mega Launcher,
   instead of the Beam Rifle, EVEN THOUGH the first attack will knock
   it down enough for the Beam Rifle to finish the enemy off. This is
   because the AI takes into consideration that the attacker will miss,
   EVEN WHEN the attacker's hit rate is 100%. Lazy Banpresto. :P

Q. Will the Assister use up his ammunition/energy when attacking?

A. Of course it will! Just remember that the AI has a bad habit of
   always leaving enough for one last personal attack when assisting.

Q. Will the Assister get Morale increaments when attacking?

A. Nope, not a single point.

A. Yes, but to a limit. When assisting attacks, only PERCENTAGE HIT
   spells work, meaning only the following will work during Assist
   Attacks:


   Sure Hit
   Concentrate
   Raid
   Snipe (range already increased)


   None of the other spells will work when assisting attack.

Q. Can I switch off Assist Attack if the assister is using too energy-
   consuming a move?

A. Yes, but you'll have to do that each and every time you see the
   battle menu, so get used to it.

Q. When Assisting Defence, what will happen?

A. Assist Defence activates ONLY when the defended is unable to dodge
   the enemy's attack. Once it is activated the Assister will take the
   damage, as if it was defending. Naturally, the assister WILL NOT
   assist if the damage taken while defending destroys it.

Q. Will the Assister use up energy when defending?

A. Yes, if it is equipped with energy-sucking devices like the Beam
   Coating, I-Field Barrier or Gravity Wall. Of course, the anti-beam
   equipment only activates against beam weapons.

Q. Will the assister get Morale increaments while defending?

A. Yes, only if it gets hit, and morale naturally increases by one.

A. Yes, but to a limit. Since the assister will, more or less, take
   damage from the attack, only the following spell will work for the
   assister in an attempt to reduce the damage:

There are a grand total of 104 player pilots. The best I can do at the
moment is to list out the spells and abilities that I managed to get
in my first play. Additional information on the ????s can be sent to
me.


But first things first, a list of Pilot Skills that can be learnt:

 \ 10. UNIT UPGRADING \

Unlike past SRWs unit upgrading has changed, from a single fixed
upgrade of cost and value, this time round cost changes (as usual) and
instead of a fixed increase of stats, each unit will increase its stat
in PERCENTAGE of its base value.

Before quoting an example, first the cost table. Please note that there
are two figures for % Up, the lower figure is for Energy upgrading.
Also, the cost of upgrading is relative, meaning that it costs 4k to
upgrade from Level 1 HP to Level 2, NOT from Level 0 to Level 2:

So therefore if we upgrade, for example, Z Gundam's HP to max, it'll
increase from a base of 3,800 HP to 5,700 HP, an increase of 50% over
its base. Note that equipping optional parts WILL NOT help in the
increase of the percenatge since it's an add-on, not the base value.


When you completely upgrade units (all 5 stats fully upgraded), unlike
in the past, where you're given a fixed amount for each extra stat
upgrade, this time round you're given a percentage to upgrade one stat
for one extra time:

HP       - Increase by 10% of max
Energy   - Increase by 20% of max
Mobility - Increase by 10% of max
Armour   - Increase by 10% of max
Limit    - Increase by 10% of max
Movement - Increase by 1
Air      - Unit Terrain status changed to A

When you fully upgrade units that can be sold, the bazaar will award
you items for being so kind as to waste your hard-earned cash on things

Strategy:
---------

Send Ryoma flying over to the first batch of enemies sitting there
looking pretty. Finish them off in the first two turns (getting hit
once is benificial too, knocking him down to red is a bonus), and it's
onward towards Jerid. Benkei should simply stay put, since he's not
going to contribute to this battle at all.

Send Musashi down to the right side of the field, and let him take out
the enemies that appear in the third turn.

By the time the extra Marasais are near the Satome institute, Kamiyu
and co. appear, and send them down to kick the Titans out of the area.

All in all, 6 turns should be more than enough to kill all and get the
point.

Strategy:
---------

Assuming that you start off with only Tiger Machine, the first step
will naturally be sending Puru and Hayato to get the containers. Set
up Quattare and Judo on the line of buildings next to the right coast
by the end of the second turn (Judo should stay close to Puru as
possible), while letting Banjo do all the dirty work of beating up on
them bees.

Remember NOT to kill off every enemy during the enemy phase. Leave one
straggler, and in the next turn, finish the bug off. The Titans will
appear along with your allies (in a difficult position, unless you
already have all Getter machines). Fly them across the bridge, and
wreck havoc on Quattaro and Emma first. The other enemies will probably
go for either Sandrock or ZZ thanks to their location, so return fire,
booming up everything quickly so that you can destroy them all to get
the skill point (if you're gunning for Hard anyway.....)

Marbet should come within range of one Frypan (:P) by the end of the
second turn (yes, she's an attacking force, not a healing one in this
scenario) so use Luck to gain a bit of extra cash.

All in all, you'll probably clear this easy scenario within 5 turns.

Strategy:
---------

Not everyone's favourable start. At least this time you aren't fighting
a ton of Magma Beasts. 4 Battle Machines just can't cut it against a
platoon of Titans...or can they? Send 2 Battle Machines after the
containers (I used Craft and Cruiser), and let the other two start
thwacking the enemies. The best recourse is to let Hyoma do lots of
counterattack killing since it adds up nicely to his morale (and kill
total) when they finally combine. Resets may be needed....a hit or two
naturally means game over.

Once on turn 3 plop Combattler V into a position where it can Spark
every enemy reinforcement. Oh, and Sure Hit works wonders to save up on
your cursing (which you'll need a lot later on).

After Raideen appears either you've cleared all of the first wave
(excluding those stationary on the top of the map) or you'd be left
with a handful enemies to clear out. 2 super robots on the rampage are
unstoppable!

Except for the fact that there's Psycho Gundam to spoil the day. The
only good thing that comes out of this is that Combattler's HP is
recovered to max, and Hyoma's Morale is boosted by 20 (but by then
you'd probably have had him at 150). Knock her down till she's about
5000-odd, then do a Chodenji Spin in the next turn to send her flying
away. In fact, if there is a critical, chances are that you'd have done
some 7000-odd damage......

And with that, it's only a matter of time to clear out the rest of the
enemies with your group of Preventer reinforcements.

At the end of the scenario, you'll be given a choice, and a listing of
the units that will be split up:

Strategy:
---------

Good 'ol Endless Waltz opening. Heero and Duo against a plethora of
Mobile Dolls. By the time you're past the first 2 turns, you'll be
feeling that you're practically fighting an army with just 2 Leos.
Except that this time round Preventer "Wind" will appear to help soon
enough.

Wufei will be going straight after Heero, so there's no way out of
this. On the other hand, the big wheeler is running away. The best
solution is to let Zechs at it with 2 blasts, and then when the
Preventer team arrives, either finish it off or drop it down enough so
that it retreats (if you want the point that is. If not just let it run
to the edge of the map). Note that all other enemies will retreat once
it does......

To defeat it (possible?) try to surround it, and then let Zechs kill
enough to reach 150 morale, then do a critical Mega Cannon with Puru
suppporing Funnels........

Strategy:
---------

The main danger of this scenario are the 4 flying Taurus'. They can
infiltrate into the Moon Cradle base within 2 turns, so taking them out
is the top prioritry. At the same time, if it is possible, knock Heero
down to activate his Potential skill, which will come in handy when
you're about to kill off the Adorastia.

Wufei and his small platoon will appear on Turn 4, and again, 2 more
flying Tausus' to worry about. Take them out as quickly as possible.
The land troops aren't going to cause any headache at all, not with 6
powerful WG Customs wrecking havoc. Remember to let Heero dish out as
much kills as possible to increase his morale.

To take out the big wheeler, make sure that you've reduced it to as low
as possible (around 5000-odd will do) , and whammy it with a critical
(or not) Twin Buster Rifle / Mega Cannon shot with Quattare / Trowa
Assisting. That will do it in VERY quickly.

No software is complete without its repetoire of bugs, and in a big
game such as this multiple bugs will appear. First, the strange, funny
and normal bugs.

1. Tifa, why are you here?
==========================
At the end of Scenario 30, she will appear once while Judo is talking
to Puru. No idea what that is, maybe telecommunicating with her
Newtype powers? She's the only Newtype who can do that anyway, judging
from the way she communicated with Kamiyu and Four in Scenario 14.

2. Near unlimited ammunition for VF-11B
=======================================
Big programming fault. The VF-11B Fighter has 12 uses of its Gatling
Gunpod, whilst the Gerwalk and Battloid mode has only 10 uses. When you
use up all the ammo while in Fighter mode, and change to G or B mode,
it will immediately increase to over 120 uses. For a quick look, go

3. Greta Rusty
==============
When you defeat Karas' Greta Gary, the engineers decided to break it up
and repair Iron Gear. Strangely, it still sits there looking pretty on
your unit list. Heck, you can even upgrade it. But NO ONE can use it,
not even blinded Eruchi (for half a scenario), who apparently, can
still see things. So it's one big orange elephant doing noting. All
35,000 HP (max of 52,500), 1400 Armour of it. >_<

4. Miriya dosen't like White
============================
While on Normal/Easy Scenario 29, you're forced to use Miriya. If she
is currently piloting the Armoured Valkyrie, the game freezes.
Solution? Place her back on her little Red one to applease her Mentradi
(or wifely?) instincts.

5. D.O.M.E. dosen't like mass producing G Bits
==============================================
When you're trying to force your way inside the hostile Moon Cradle,
try to kill as little as possible. Knowing that it repledenishes an
infinite amount of G Bits, you can go on a merry killing spree, but it
will eventually lock up the game when you clear it by placing Ri.Garum
on the satellite pointer.

Solution? Kill enough for Ri.Garum to squeeze through. I had the lowest
kill rate EVER in a SRW game: 1 G Bit and 2 Mass-Produced Gungrust IIs.
All in 3 turns.

6. Waverider CHANGE! Waveri..huh?
=================================
In Scenario 39, when fighting Rosamia, if Kamiyu is in Waverider as he
learns the Waverider Attack (and Zeta is being powered up), the game
will freeze because Zeta cannot disappear and reappear in Waverider
form.

Solution? Change Zeta back to MS form when fighting Psycho Gundam Mk.II
