1) FAQ UPDATES
=======================================================================

Versoin 1.01 - May 26, 2002
There was a bit of a delay in making this update, but a missing item
has been added to the list.

Version 1.0 - February 22, 2002
First (and complete!) version of the guide.

=======================================================================
2) HOW TO GET JOLTIMA
=======================================================================
This section explains where to find the game for your TI calculator.

First off, Joltima currently has ports only for the 82, 83, 83+, 85,
and 86 models. Just keep that in mind if you want to play this game.
Anyway, the official Joltima page contains an overview of the RPG,
along with a couple screenshots. Here's a link:

  http://www.affinix.com/~justin/programs/joltima/

The bottom of the page has the downloads listed for the various TI
calculators. Download the correct file for your calculator. Now, in
order to transfer the file from your PC to the calculator, you need
to buy the link cable. You can order it from the Texas Instruments
site, or a general office supply store (I found mine at OfficeMax for
about $10). Use the Graph Link software that comes with the cable
to send Joltima.
Depending on your model, you might have to download a shell program
to get Joltima working correctly. Look at the chart in the above link's
page to see what shell you need to find (if any). You can search for
the shells in the archives found on www.ticalc.org.

3) GAME OVERVIEW
=======================================================================
This section explains the basic mechanics of Joltima.

>>>>>>>>>>>
a. CONTROLS
>>>>>>>>>>>
Nothing too complicated here...

ARROW KEYS - Move the party, obviously. =P

2ND - Confirm selection; Bring up menu screen.

ALPHA - Cancel selection; Skip character's turn.

GRAPH/EXIT - Quit game.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
b. BATTLE SYSTEM
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
If played enough RPGs out there, Joltima's battle system will be
very familiar to you. The screen starts up showing your party, their
names, current HP, and, of course, the enemies you're up against.
The order in which your characters attack depend on their agility.
The thief is usually the one that goes first, since he has the highest
agility value. A box appears around the character ready to be ordered.
Another box shows up in the upper-right corner of the screen with
three commands:

ATTACK - Attack an enemy. When you select this, a box appears over an
enemy. Use the arrow keys to move it to target a different foe.

ITEM - Use an item you currently have in your inventory.

RUN - Run away from battle. It doesn't always work, as in most RPGs.

Once an enemy sustains enough hits, it falls and is eliminated from
the screen. Take out all of the foes, and you receive experience points
(EXP) and gold (G). The more difficult the enemy, the more EXP and G
it's worth. The number in the enemy party is also important.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>
c. CHARACTERS
>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I'll just give a brief description of the characters and their abilities.

------
KNIGHT
------
The main tank and melee fighter. He possesses great strength, which
enables him to equip almost any armor and weapon and do heavy damage to
foes. His HP level is above average.

------
ARCHER
------
The archer's strength is a bit lower than the knight's. However, this
character has a 25% chance of doing double damage. This is indicated by
the launching of an arrow when the archer attacks an enemy. The HP level
is below average.

----
MAGE
----
Your typical magic user. He has below average HP and generally takes
quite a beating. The fireball ability is what comes in handy. It can do
more damage than any other character. Of course, there's a catch. The
magic user is limited to his MP value, which is found on the status
screen by the mage's equipped weapon. The fireball uses 1 MP. Once the
MP store is emptied, the mage uses his weapon. This usually doesn't do
much to enemies. Conserve the MP by skipping the mage's turn with the
ALPHA key.

-----
THIEF
-----
Think of the knight, just not quite the amount of defensive power.
The thief can equip most items and does good damage. He (she?) also
has the most agility, enabling the chance to attack first. The thief
also levels faster than the other characters.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
d. STRATEGIES / TIPS
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
1. Don't be discouraged if you find starting out in Joltima difficult.
Once you can get your characters to level up, things become easier.

2. This may be an obvious tip, but don't fight a group you can barely
defeat. It's not worth watching your party fall to pieces for a few
   extra experience points or gold.

3. Rest at the inn when necessary. Just make sure you have enough money.

4. Learn how effective certain characters are against enemies. Let me
make up an example. Say that two enemies have 3 HP. Your knight and
thief do 2 HP per hit. Your archer and mage do 1 HP. Instead of having
the knight and thief both attack a single foe, have each one attack a
different enemy. Now the archer and mage should do the same. Using
this strategy, you can eliminate the entire party in a single round
   instead of two.

5. Conserve the mage's MP until you really need it. The fireball spell
is powerful, but you have a limited amount to cast.

6. Once a party member is knocked out (HP reaches 0), that character
will be revived in the next battle with 1 HP.

7. Upgrade your party's equipment as soon as possible by either purchasing
it or finding items in chests.

8. The maximum amount of gold you can carry is 255 G, and the maximum
amount of inventory items is 10.

9. Have an extra set of batteries for your calculator on hand. ^_^

=======================================================================
4) WALKTHROUGH
=======================================================================
This section guides you through the game.

NOTE: The enemies don't have official names in the game, so I just made
them up based on what I thought they looked like. Hopefully, you'll
be able to understand what enemies are what name.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
OVERWORLD MAPS
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
To help get around the overworld, I've created two maps. One containing
the "western" half and one with the "eastern" half. You can find them on
my FTP space at:

Western Overworld (421 KB):
http://home.earthlink.net/~metroidmoo/gifs/joltima_west_world.gif

Eastern Overworld (294 KB):
http://home.earthlink.net/~metroidmoo/gifs/joltima_east_world.gif

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
GETTING STARTED
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
When you select "NEW" from the title screen, you're given the chance
to name the four characters in your party. Use the UP and DOWN arrows
to select a letter, 2ND to confirm, and ALPHA to backspace.
After the they've been named, you're presented with a screen that
gives a little information on the story and your objective. Simply put,
the objective to collect the eight Shards from the eight caves scattered
around the overworld and slay the evil wizard Korifca. Let's go!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
THE JOURNEY BEGINS
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
The party wakes up in the first town. Chat with the townspeople to
discover the locations of the first two caves. The easiest is found to
the south, and the other is in the northeast. So, head south to the
first cave.
Before you enter, do some level building with your party using the
random encounters in the overworld. As I've stated in the tips section,
things are tough in the beginning. Enemies can take quite a few hits
and deliver enough damage to obliterate your party easily. Just hang in
there and rest at the inn as much as possible. Get the party to at
least Lv 3.

>>>>>>>
CAVE #1
>>>>>>>
Items:
Herb
LngSwd
Shard

Enemy Parties:
2x Bat
2x Mouse
4x Mouse

  Path to Shard:
  1. Take left path.
  2. Up at first fork.
  3. Left at second fork.
  4. Pass fork; go left.
  5. Up at fork; then right.
  6. Right at next split.
  7. Continue on to find the chest.

That's how all of the caves are basically set up. You wonder around
in a labrinyth and find the chest with a Shard. You can also pick up
other items along the way.
Exit the cave, and head back to town to rest. Buy a Chain Mail for
the Knight, and Leather Armor for the other characters, if you have
enough funds for it.
Head to the far northeast corner of the overworld to the second cave
once the party is at about Lv 5.

>>>>>>>
CAVE #2
>>>>>>>
Items:
Remedy
Shard

Enemy Parties:
1x Slime
5x Mouse
2x Bat, 2x Mouse

  Path to Shard:
  1. Take left path at first split.
  2. Right at next fork.
  3. Go up when you find the path that leads north.
  4. Then move left to find the chest.

Now, when you walk in the overworld, you'll notice you start fighting
the same enemy parties you just encountered in the second cave. This
will occur when you find the Shards in the other places.

>>>>>>>
CAVE #3
>>>>>>>
Items:
CrsBow
Shard

Enemy Parties:
2x Bat, 1x Slime
3x Slime
2x Slime, 2x Bat, 1x Mouse

  Path to Shard:
  1. Right at first split.
  2. Right again at fork.
  3. Left.
  4. Up.

Head to the town of Forestra, rest, and pick up new equipment at the
shop (although it might be a bit expensive). One of the citizens says
that the fourth cave is in the middle east, so that's your next stop!

>>>>>>>
CAVE #4
>>>>>>>
Items:
Shard

Enemy Parties:
2x Ninja
2x Ninja, 2x Slime
1x Ninja, 2x Slime, 2x Bat

  Path to Shard:
  1. Take left at start.
  2. Keep going in current direction at the four-way intersection.
  3. Same as #2.
  4. Up at fork.
  5. Right at fork to the Shard.

Now would be a good time to do some leveling and gold collecting.
Try to get everyone to at least Lv 12. The fifth cave is located in
the mid-north part of the overworld among some mountains.

>>>>>>>
CAVE #5
>>>>>>>
Items:
Robe
Shard

Enemy Parties:
1x UFO, 1x Ninja
2x Alien, 2x Ninja
1x Alien, 2x Ninja, 2x Slime

  Path to Shard:
  1. Head left at beginning.
  2. Go down at split.
  3. Right at next split.
  4. Continue on to the chest with a Shard.

I'm sure by the time you leave this cave, you'll have a ton of G racked
up. So go buy new weapons and armor! Power up your characters to at least
Lv 15. It might take time, but it's worth it.

>>>>>>>
CAVE #6
>>>>>>>
Items:
Cutlas
Shard
Vest

Enemy Parties:
3x UFO
1x UFO, 2x Alien, 2x Ninja
1x Alien, 1x Eye

  Path to Shard:
  1. Head left at entrance.
  2. Turn left at first fork.
  3. Go down at next split to the chest.

Once you're done here, head off to the seventh cave in the southwestern
corner of the east overworld (the area east of the bridge in the middle of
the overworld).

>>>>>>>
CAVE #7
>>>>>>>
Items:
Elixer
Shard
Plate

Enemy Parties:
1x Eye, 3x UFO
1x Wolf, 1x UFO
2x Eye, 1x UFO

  Path to Shard:
  1. Take the right path at the three-way at the start.
  2. Go down at first fork.
  3. Head left at split.
  4. Then turn up at next split.

Build the party to at least Lv 17-19, and shove off to the final cave
in the mountainous region in the northwest corner of the overworld.

>>>>>>>
CAVE #8
>>>>>>>
Items:
Elixer
Shard

Enemy Parties:
1x UFO, 1x Wolf, 1x Eye
2x Wolf
1x Wolf, 1x Knight

  Path to Shard:
  1. Go left at the four-way.
  2. Head up at first split.
  3. Turn left and go up at the third fork you encounter.

Now you have all eight Shards! Head to the town in the lowerleft
section of the overworld. One of the citizens will state that you have
all of the Shards and that you should head off on a boat to the island.
The castle is found on the southern tip of the island.
Before you enter the castle, the entire party should be AT LEAST
Lv 20. Equip everyone with a Vest and their best weapon. Also, purchase
around 5-6 Elixers.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
KORIFCA'S CASTLE
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Items:
Faith
SlvrBw
XCalbr

Enemy Parties:
2x Knight
1x Knight, 2x Wolf, 2x Eye
2x Eye, 1x Wolf

Korifca's castle (cave would be more like it) is the final area in the
game. If you want the items, head to the right path at the split. If you
want to head straight to the final boss, take the left path and just
continue along that route.
  On to Korifca...

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
FINAL BOSS: Korifca, 4x Knight

The four Knights alone can make this battle a pain! Concentrate your
fire on them before taking on Korifca. Don't worry about your Mage's MP,
use up as much as you can! This is the final fight, so there's no reason
to conserve it! You might take quite a beating in the process of
eliminating the Knights, but it makes the situation much easier.
Korifca can easily take down party members if you did not equip them
with the best armor and/or did not do enough level building. If you prepared
yourself like I stated earlier, Korifca's attacks will do 10-20 HP damage
to one party member. Otherwise, he's not too tough.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

  Congratulations! You've completed Joltima!

c. MISCELLANEOUS
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Apparently, there's some sort of glitch when using healing items.
Healing items can restore HP beyond the character's max HP. For
example, a character with 65 HP will have 115 HP when a Remedy is used.
Use this to your advantage in tough battles.

Herb
----
Function: Restores 10 HP to one character.

Remedy
------
Function: Restores 50 HP to one character.

Elixer
------
Function: Restores 99 HP to one character.
