Version History

0.3- Walkthrough up until the Swamp, and a small Alchemy FAQ.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The story

In 1965, in the town of Podunk, a secret experiment was about to conclude. But
something went terribly wrong. No activity on the project has been reported
since. Flash foward to today. We join our hero and his dog as they emerge from
the newest movie. The hero's dog goes chasing after a cat, which leads the two
to a large building.

The hero finds a secret entrance in the wall and enters, which takes him to a
strange machine. Somehow the machine activates (mostly due to his dog chewing
on the wires). Suddenly his dog vanishes, and the machine pulls him in. This
leads him to an even stranger place than before. He is led by a mysterious
stranger to a lab, where he is placed into a chamber with several robots firing
on him.

Our hero finds a bazooka in a box nearby and dispatches his attackers with a
few well-timed blasts. He sees a way out and takes it, which reunites him with
his dog in a small escape pod. He ends up destroying the controls by accident,
and so his ship plummets downward until it crash lands in a jungle.

The Walkthrough

After the somewhat funny introductory sequence, you will gain control of your
character. After a short sequence, you will be reunited with your dog, who
is...well...not himself. He does fetch you a handy weapon, so be sure to make
use of it. Your dog will sniff out items for you, so be sure to check the area
where he's sniffing. It seems useless now, but believe me, it will come in
handy later. For now just pick up the goodies and bop any bad guys that get in
your way.

After you go up a screen or two you'll run into trouble. The raptors will come
after you. You're supposed to lose at this point, so don't bother fighting them
off. Your dog will pull you to safety after you get KOed. You'll recover in a
village and have a chance to save your game. Do so and then travel around the
village and collect the items you find. You can buy items in the
upper-rightmost hut.

Once you're done traveling around, talk to people in the lower section of the
village. One will tell you that Fire Eyes lives in the hut nearby. She will
come out to greet you. She'll tell you to come inside. At this point you can
name the dog whatever you want. She'll tell you that you are in Evermore. The
hero will ask about how to return to Podunk, and Fire Eyes will offer to help
you if you help her in return. She wants you to go to BugMuck in the east and
find Strong Heart, who has been missing for some time now. In order to help you
she'll give you an Alchemy spell, Flash.

Now you should head east of the village. Here you can collect some more items.
Do that and fight your way to the right (don't bother fighting the pink-shelled
things, they're a bit too strong for my liking). Once you get to the next
screen, quicksand pits will appear from place to place. Go past the first one
and get sucked into the one closer to the right-hand wall. You'll end up in an
area near the cave. The guy in there will sell you items, and offer you the
Jaguar Tooth Ring, which allows your character to dash.

Return to the main area and dash past the rest of the quicksand pits. Go on top
of the left cliff to collect some items. Now head down and you'll be in the
swamp. Collect some items and then enter the cave nearby. The guy will tell you
that Strong Heart went to find the Big Bug, and will give you the Hard Ball
alchemy.

You can also buy alchemy ingredients and save your game. Do so if you want. Now
head deeper into the swamp (and look out for items. 'Course, you should do this
every time you find a new area, so this'll be the last time I mention it).
Enter the cave from there. There are a lot of crumbling ledges in this area,
and a big slide on either side that will take you back to the bottom, so watch
your footing. After you reach the top, you'll enter another room.

From here you can use the side exits and grab the items that seemed out of
reach eariler. On the right-hand exit take the bottom path to advance farther
into the cave. You will meet your first boss here.

This guy can be tough. His Acid Rain takes off over 40 damage, and he
constantly attacks with his flailing arms and creates lots of minor enemies for
you to contend with. Throw Alchemy spells at his heart to damage him. He
constantly throws you backwards, which causes about 5 damage. To open the path
to his heart (his weak point) attack his ribs repeatedly. Then attack his heart
and he'll throw you out. Keep your HP above 40 in case he does his Acid Rain
attack, which hits both your characters for over 30 damage. He is tough, but
after you beat him you'll rescue Strong Heart. You'll also get a new weapon,
the Spider's Claw.

Now exit the dungeon through the path you just opened. Look around outside to
find the Mammoth Guard, an armlet. Equip it on your main character. Now head
north. You should reach some weeds barring your path at the end. Cut them down
with your axe (note: you can do this to reach previously unreachable items. Be
sure to look around for weeds you can cut down).

Now return to the village and talk to Fire Eyes. She tells you that the volcano
north of the village is cooling down, which will eventually cause problems for
the village. She'll also tell you that she originally lived in Podunk as well.
Her grandfather lived in the mansion on the hill, and he created a machine that
could create any world to people's liking. Since she enjoys the prehistoric
age, the world that you are currently in was created. She was supposed to be
there for only a few hours, but needless to say it was a lot more than that.
Also, somehow events in your world affect what happens in this one. The volcano
cooling is probably one result of this. She also says that there may be
something inside the volcano that may lead you back home and save the village.

She'll give you some Call Beads, which allow you to summon her. Save these for
boss battles (they're VERY good!). Now you should head south and pick up the
items you couldn't get to earlier (especially the Shell Hat). You can also stop
by Strong Heart's hut. He'll give you the Cure alchemy and sell you items.

Now head north of the village. You may notice a cave blocked by a rock in this
area. You can't do anything about the rock, so don't worry about it for now.
Head west of the rock to find a cave that deals in some strong armor. You
should have two of the three pieces of armor he is selling already, so just buy
that Armor. If you don't have enough cash fight enemies outside until you do.
After exiting the forest up north, you'll end up in the Mammoth Graveyard,
where you'll be attacked by four Vipers.

Every now and then during the battle, the Viper Commander will slam into one of
the big pylons, causing an earthquake that hits for about 10 damage. To my
knowledge there is no way to stop this except to finish off the vipers quickly.
Use a couple of Storm spells from Fire Eyes (via the Call Beads) to dish out
40-50 damage to all of them. Use the call beads sparingly, though.

Once you defeat them all, the Viper Commander will attack. His attacks take off
20-30 damage each, so be ready with Petals and Nectar. You can hit him with a
2-3 hit combo by using Hard Ball or Flash, then attacking him and backing away.
When you defeat the Viper Commander, you'll get the Horn Spear.

You'll meet up with a man who will tell you more about the vipers. After you
explain that you're going to enter their base and stop them (and get yourself
home in the process), he'll tell you that you can find the means to doing so in
the volcano up north and open the gate for you. He'll also offer to heal you
and will give you the Heal alchemy.

There is a shop in the area that sells items in the southwest area. Stock up
while you can. Also in the west area there is an Inn. Use them as you need, and
then go north. On the pathway there is a cave. If you enter this cave you will
confront three Raptors. If you defeat all three of them you will earn the Dino
Skin armor, which provides 7 points of defense. Equip it and head back outside
and continue north.

Up north you will come to a mountain, which appears to be impossible to climb.
Slash the shrubs near the base of the mountain to uncover a steam jet, which
will blast you up a ways. Now you have to solve a trial-and-error puzzle. The
steam jets will blast you up, while the caves will take you back down. You have
to find the right route that will take you to the top of the mountain. I don't
remember the exact sequence, so just go in caves and steamjets at random.

After you reach the top of the mountain, you'll reach an old man. You'll
explain to him that you want to enter the volcano, and that the only way in is
blocked by a big boulder. Fortunately, he'll give you the Levitate Alchemy to
move the boulder. But it requires an ingredient that can only be found in the
swamp to the east of the mountain. He'll offer to save your game and sell you
ingredients. Do both, then go back down (via the right-bottom side of the
volcano) and head southeast.

Weapon FAQ

If you've played Secret of Mana, you know how the Weapon system works. The more
you use the weapon, the more proficient you will become with it. You will also
be able to use more powerful "Charged" attacks. To perform a charge attack, get
to level 1, 2, or 3 with the weapon, hold down A until the bar begins to
charge. Release when the bar is full to perform a charged attack. These become
better and better as weapon skill increases. Note, however, that unlike Secret
of Mana, the weapons in this game only advance to Level 3 rather than Level 8.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alchemy FAQ

Basically, like Secret of Mana, Alchemy gains more powerful the more often you
use it. But unlike Secret of Mana, Alchemy does not consume MP. Rather, you
must find raw materials and combine them to produce the desired effect. Your
dog comes in very handy for this reason, as he can sniff out items for you.
Like weapons in Secret of Evermore, Alchemy can be boosted up to Level 3. You
can carry up to eight Alchemy skills at a time.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alchemy Skills

Flash: 2 parts Oil, 1 part Wax
Effect: A small fireball hits the enemy.

Hard Ball: 1 part Crystal, 1 part Clay
Effect: A hard ball hits the enemy.

Cure: 2 Parts Root, 1 Part Oil
