2. Introduction & Review

Well many would wonder why any body would want to play this game or write a FAQ
on it. Well I actually liked and found it to be a fun game. I answer all the
questions that plague mankind for centuries. How do I kill the damn midgets,
Dragons? Well all these questions and more will be answered.

Well, I actually enjoyed Heroes of the Lance. Yes, I know this may sound
impossible to many people out there. I kind of like the graphics that played
during the opening scenes, the game graphics were nice too. The music that
played was catchy even though it did tend to get annoying after a while. The
controls I have to admit are a bit clunky and sluggish, but when you got use to
them they weren't too bad. My first impression was why do people think this is
bad? I liked the opening theme, and how the characters looked, even though I
didn't know what to do at first. I learned after a while and got my bearings
and
went on my way. When you start playing this game, you and actually figure out
where to go, how to kill Dwarves, and slay dragons it isn't half-bad. I feel
many people out there, who hate this game, didn't give it a chance or even
tried
it pass the first few screens. Well many people including me do not know the
story of this game, you are supposed to find some disks and that's one of the
keys in this game.

Visual 6.0/10

The graphics were pretty reasonable they wouldn't win any awards for greatness
but I have seen worst. Each Hero was a different size from the next. They all
wore different clothes, which helped you distinguish them from one another
since
you really couldn't see their faces at all. The backgrounds in the dungeons
could have been better, they usually were flat and gray bricked every where.
Some times items were on the walls and they were hard to see because everything
kind of blended in, with the background. The opening scene where they showed
each of the Heroes looked great and it showed a lot of detail. During the
waterfall scene it looked good too, and it had some detail in it as well the
water looked like it was flowing down the mountain, or valley. The weapons
usually looked the same except for Raistlin and the small guy who carried a
stick. Almost everyone carried a sword or a Lance. The weapon really didn't
look
like much either, it was only about a inch or so long, but you could tell when
you hit your opponents though. When you think about it the graphics could have
been better but they weren't that bad.

Audio 7.0/10

The music that played in the beginning of the game when it started up was quite
catchy and good to listen to. There was about 2 or 3 songs that played
throughout the game, and I liked all of them. They all had a good value to
them,
and were the type of Rpg music that was good for the ears. They never got
openly
annoying, and reminded me quite a bit of Zelda. The sound effects reminded me
of
Crystalis, because they both had similar sounds when you killed an enemy. The
enemies and your Hero let out a distinctively different cry when you get
attacked you will notice this after playing a while. Other than those sounds
they was not much else in the sound department, accept for usual sounds of
spells being cast. This still left much to be desired but it was ultimately
drowned out by the music. The music played well with the atmosphere of the
game.

Game Play 8.0/10

This game is for one player only. You start off with Goldmoon, but you can
change your hero, I advise you to because she has the best Clerical Magic
Power.
You have a status screen filled with useful option, which many didn't know
about, or how to use. You can take things, give things, drop things, and much
more. You have really two people who are good with magic and the other 6 heroes
isn't that good, although a couple of the other ones can use magic too.
Raistlin
is more of your Black Mage type, and Goldmoon is your White Mage. There are
many
spells these two characters can use and they are all useful if you plan to se
the end of the game. You have a compass at the bottom of the screen to tell you
which way you are going because this is a side scrolling RPG/Action game and
not
an overhead view one. You also have a battle, which are real time battles and
not turn based ones. When you battle you will have to know your opponent,
meaning you should be able to judge which is the best attack to use on them,
for
some you have to take a different approach. You have weapons literally
scattered
on every screen, some times you can't see them like potions or things on the
shelves, but I advise to pick up everything you will never know when something
is useful. Your main objective is to try and get through the dungeon wit hone
Hero intact, if you do consider you self lucky, its not an easy task. The
difficulty is hard, and there is a save feature.

Overall 7.0/10

Well I gave it a 7 I liked it. Many people did not give it a chance or read the
10 other reader reviews and decided that this thing isn't worth it. Despite all
that it is worth it in my opinion. I have some faults with this game; the game
main problem is that it is too slow. The controls are stiff, and sometimes you
press the button to attack and nothing happens at all. This is a can really
mess
things up when you're fighting a particularly tough enemy like a dragon. The
graphics could have been clearer that some times you couldn't see an enemy
coming, like the skeletons. I think the menu was too slow and it took a while
to
figure out, it wasn't user friendly enough in my opinion. The replay value
depends on the person, some people may not like this but that's a very few. The
fun factor is on the low side, too, after a while you will stop playing this
game. I think this game relies on the person maybe, I'm just different, look at
this yourself and see what you think. That's a Dy$e Guarantee.

3. Basic Game Controls

Left: makes you walk left
Right makes you walk right
Up: N/A
Down: N/A

Up + A Makes you jump in place
Down + A Makes you duck
Holding R/L Run
Holding R/L while U/A Long Jump

COMBAT:
B Slash with weapon
B + Down
And way you are facing Lower Slash
B + Up
And way you are facing Upper Slash

Under Combat you will notice a compass which should look like this :

         N
       W E
         S

Although some times it is reversed. I will use this in the Walk through a lot
like for ex. Go through the South Door means do down or North means up.

To go through a door hold up, or down.

4. Status Screen

The Status screen looks like this

ENTER Zak Tsaeroth
===================

Suggested Set up:
Front Four:
Caramon River Wind Goldmoon Raistlin
Skid Row:
Sturm Flint Tanis Tasslehoff

============================
To First Distant Alarm Bells
============================

Go NORTH through the door, head right and EAST through the next door. Take the
pouch and give it to Tasslehoff, he's the only one who can use it. Destroy the
Bozak and go SOUTH through the door. Go left and whip the Bozak or just push
him
back far enough to get to do the opening go WEST through it. A midget should be
waiting for you, Kill him (refer to the FAQ if you don't know how) Take the gem
afterwards and go right. You should see a Bozak and a midget, concentrate your
attacks on the midget, and the Bozak should help you destroy him by shooting
fireballs downwards. Destroy the Bozak for all of his hard work. Go to the far
right door. Hit a right and go through the next door.

==============================
To Second Distant Alarm Bells
==============================

Once the drop an Aghar1 should be waiting for you. Web his big ass and hack
away, at him. Go SOUTH through the door head left ignore the first door, and
the
curative waterfall will be there to sooth your injuries. Go back to the door
you
previously ignored go EAST through it, a Midget should greet you. Kill him and
collect the goodies on the walls and floors. Go back through the door and head
left, Run and jump over the pit and destroy Baaz. Keep Left snags the Gold
Chalice, Go WEST through the door and you will be transported to a new land.
Destroy Aghar2 (the floating ones) and go WEST through the next door. Go right
and take a WEST through the next door. Go Left and take a WEST through that
door. Ignore the dragon, you can fight it if you want and go through the door.
Go right destroy the Bazak and go WEST through the door. SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.
Change the front Hero to Raistlin, and use WEB on the man. And jump over the
whole, change back to a stronger hero. Destroy him while his back is turned and
destroy the two mideons that will greet you. Go right and SOUTH through the
door.

Tehre should be some flames here and some arrows. Use *Protection Against Evil*
and run through with your strongest HP wise Hero go SOUTH through the door. A
Baaz will be waiting, kill him and head left a Dragon will be there (refer to
the FAQ if you don't know how to kill it) Go WEST through the door. A series of
pits will be there switch to Raistlin to get over these with ease, switch to a
stronger hero and go EAST through the door. Distant Alarm Bells here.

================
To The Dragon
================

After the drop it would be wise TO SAVE YOUR GAME HERE. Go SOUTH through the
door and immediately destroy the dragon. After that destroys a weak Spider and
another Dragon will greet you, if you didn't destroy the first one you are in
for some trouble because now you got a dragon breathing down your throat and
one
up your ass. Destroy the one in front of you, and go EAST through the door.
There should be a door right next to the one you went through go through that
one. Go right and SOUTH through the first door. Kill the punk spider, There
will
be 4 doors. The firs two have dragons in there protecting some Gym's the, third
has a spider protecting a gem. And the last one is the ticket out, go EAST
through that. Go right and through the first door, this will land you in a room
with a dragon in it. Ice him off and go NORTH through the door. Go Left and
through the next door, Go right now and destroy the monsters. Go North through
the next door, Go left and through that door. Head right and go to the far
right
door, head left and destroy the two Aghar1's Go through the door the huge
Dragon
awaits. SAVE before going in.

=========================
Dragon & Disk of Miskhail
=========================

Can a game ending boss be this easy? He looks like a challenge but he's not.
Put
Goldmoon, in the front of the Heroes, use *Deflect Dragon Breath* if you have
any blue Crystal left in the staff. Then heal her up, as much as possible. Use
PRAYER, I'm not confirmed if this helps but it seems to get close to the
dragon,
basically as close as possible she will take a beating but it won't kill her.
Press B, enough times and she will throw the staff at the dragon, which will
kill his big ass. Now go right the disk will be waiting for you, grab those
stand around for a minute, and enjoy the ending.

7. FAQ

Q. Hey, I just bought Heroes of the Lance yesterday, it sucks badly so what is
it all about?

A. According to Dr. Strange Heroes of the Lance is an adaptation of Advanced
Dungeons and Dragons, in a manner of speaking. The AD&D setting is called
'Dragonlance' and is one of the more popular modules for the game. More
specifically, Heroes of the Lance is a (pretty much) direct adaptation
of several chapters from the novel "Dragons of Autumn Twilight", the
first in a long and fantastically-written series of Dragonlance-set
novels written by the literary team of Hickman and Weis. In fact,
'Heroes of the Lance' was a title of honor given to the adventurers
(yes, they're identical in the game and the book). Also, if you watch
the intro (where it shows images of each character), you can see that
the images are identical to those used on the cover art of the
first-edition publishing of the series.

Q. Ok Dyse, what does Enter Zak Tsaeroth mean?

A. -According to Dr. Strange Xak Tsaroth (as it was spelled in the novel) was a
ruined city in which the Disks of Mishakal (also spelled differently in the
book) were guarded by an evil black dragon. 'Enter Xak Tsaroth' means just
that:
enter the city of Xak Tsaroth.

Q. Hey Dyse How come I keep falling in this pit? This door doesn't do
nothing!!!

A. Don't go to the pit, hold up or down by the door.

Q. I'm really stuck Dyse how do I beat those Midgets!!!! I tried everything and
nothing works help me!!!!!!!

A. You have to press B and Down and the way your facing 5 hits will kill them.

Q. Dyse how do I use magic spells????

A. You have to have Raistlin, and Gold Moon, as two of the main Heroes of the
Lance, Raistlin, for Magic Staff, and Gold Moon, for Clerical.

Q. Thanks Dyse I killed thousands of those midgets, but there is this dragon
and
he totally demolished me now what?

Get GoldMoon in your front four. Go To the status screen under Clerical Magic
scroll up you will see ^Deflect Dragons Breath ^Hack away at him in 5-8 he is
dead

Q. Now there's these floating guys they keep going pass me they killed my whole
crew, and I don't know what to do!!!

A. Ok, these guys are the opposite of The Midgets. This is what you do in stead
of attacking down like you did with the midget's attack up. I would suggest
using one of the stronger characters.

Steve M. Asked "Why does this game suck so much?"

A. Well that's a matter of personal opinion some don't think it sucks like me

Steve M. asked "What's wrong with this game, how come I don't gain
experience??????"

Xarkos Says:
A. Frequent misconception, this isn't a FF style rpg but a true table-top rpg
in video game format. in TT xp is earned at the end of a session,
therefore the characters can't advance in the middle of the game, the
monster kill chart and treasure rating in this game are basically just for
fun with no true purpose i can discover, but are nice references for AD&D
players who want to compare the game to a TT session.

Q. Why can't some characters hold the blue staff, and other weapons?

A. According to Dr. Strange In Raistlin's case, his staff, the Staff of Magius,
possesses (in the novel) a mind of it's own. It chooses who can weild it. In
Goldmoon's case, the Blue Crystal Staff can only be touched by one who is of
pure heart because it was created by a goddess of pure good (ditto, from the
novel).

Q. How come I can't use either type of Magic Spells?

You have to have Raistlin or Goldmoon as one of the front 4 heroes

Q. What's the best characters to use?

A. Well almost all are good. Some are exceptional like Caramon. I would
definitely not use Raistlin as my main Hero, since he has a very low HP, and he
is the main black Mage. You should check their stats and the guys with the best
overall stats are ideal for the front 2. Goldmoon, and Rasitlin should be in
the
back of the front four, but never on the bottom row.

Q. What Characters, don't you use?

A. Basically, Tasslehoff, Flint and some of those other guys stay on Skid Row.

Q. What do I do if I run out of magic?

Xarkos Says:
A. I think the waterful might refill the magic meters (or maybe just the
bcs's meter) but i don't remember for sure.

Q. Some items are totally useless, like coins & Gold Chalice's what do I do
with
them?

Xarkos Says:
A Gold coins, chalices, knifes, a lot of stuff
like that is just for treasure points at the end and don't have a real
purpose in the actual game, though scrolls potions and the like are still
VERY important (scrolls and potions don't use magic meters and may produce
effects that spells don't cover).

Q. When a character has a grave instead of their face is their any possibility
of me reviving them.

Xarkos Says:
A. this was a method of determination by the designers to mark a difference
between characters who can be "raised" and those who can't. gravestones
remove all chance is bringing them back, gray faces can be brought back.
"final strike", falling in a pit, and leaving the body behind all produce
gravestones (though the last one does leave their items still, not sure
about "fs".)

Q. This maze is crazy is there any short cuts or a secret way out of it?

A. If you are in that first maze there is no way out of it, none that I could
see, so basically give up and cry.

Q. You talked about those pits why can't I jump over them, I keep falling off?

A. Use Raistlin, he has the best jump, don't run just jump in place he will
glide over.

Q. After I use Final Strike with Raistlin is there anyway to revive him?

A. Nope he's pretty much toast.

Q. Where is the disk I'm supposed to be looking for?

A. Once you defeat the huge dragon the Disk of Miskal will be waiting for you.

Q. Do I have to use Goldmoon to kill the Huge Dragon?

Xarkos Says:
A. actually if i remember correctly any of the characters that can pick up
the staff can use it against the dragon (the games way of letting her die
without ending the game), however they won't have access to all the
spells. another note on the staff, in the book the statue on the first floor
(of mishakal, the goddess who created the disks and gave riverwind (goldmoon's
fianc the staff) revived the power of the staff (and brought goldmoon
back from the dead after the dragon killed her), however i have yet to
figure out how to do this in the game.

Q. Ummm I accidentally killed her, now what?

A. Look up there

Q. Why does it say 'To Be Continued'?

A. According to Dr. Strange: The game was based on a series of novels (well,
'almost directly translated' would be more accurate). Since the game itself
only represents a few chapters in one book, "To Be Continued" is a reference
to the other books and the fact that the story continues after the end
of the game.

Q. Can I ask you a personal question? Why do you like this game when everyone
hates it?

A. Well, my friend, some people are different. Everyone said how bad this game
sucked and I had to see for myself. It isn't that bad, I mean there are worst
games for NES and even Playstation that are worst than this, like Dr. Jekyll
Mr. Hyde and Kung Fu Heroes and the Tomb Raider Series. Those games suck
badly, and in my opinion this wasn't as bad as many people said it was.

Q. Will there be a sequel to Heroes of the Lance, would you have liked to have
seen one?

A. N, I highly doubt it. But, Sure I would of loved to see Heroes of the Lance
II, or a great sequel for Playstation or Dreamcast that would have been great
in
my opinion.
