Version 0.1 (8/21/00): The first and VERY incomplete version of this guide! I
only covered the first parts of the game, but that's because I wanted to write
for this game and I wanted to make sure my FAQ is posted to "save my spot"
before the crowds oversaturate the game. This guide will be completed at some
point, so please be patient since I'm playing the game as I write the
walkthrough.

-= 2. Introduction -=
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Chrono Cross is the long-awaited sequel to the legendary game, Chrono Trigger,
for the Super Nintendo. This new sequel is for the Sony Playstation. In this
game, there is a whole new battle system, a large cast of characters, and many
different things to choose from. Because of the many characters you can recruit
throughout the game, there are many different "paths" you can take through
certain parts of the game. However, my walkthrough is going to be written the
way I played the game, but I will also try to explain what will happen if you
do/do not recruit a certain character at a certain time. I don't want to make
this a "strict" guide, I'm just going to write the walkthrough and assume you
have the characters I have chosen throughout the game, and that's all.

-= 4. Battle System Guide -=
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

To start, the battle system used in Chrono Cross is pretty unique and pretty
difficult to get used to. There are 4 different things you can do during the
battle when it's your character(s) turn in battle: you can attack, use an
element, defend, or try to run away. Each character also has a Stamina Meter in
their on-screen status box during the battle. I'll explain everything you'll
need to know about getting through battles below.

Attacking
---------

When you select the "Attack" command, you'll be given the option to pick a
target for your attack. After you pick that target, you'll be given a list of 4
different options. The first 3 options will be for physically attacking and the
last option is if you want to use an Element to attack. As for those top three
options, you'll be able to pick the degree of damage you'll cause to the enemy
if your attack connects. Option #1 is for a Weak attack, #2 is for a Strong
attack, and #3 for a Fierce attack. Each one has a number percentage next to
it, which tells you the chances that your attack at that level will connect
with the enemy and cause damage. It's recommended that you start out with using
a Weak attack because the percentage will raise for the much stronger levels of
attacking. Also, whenever you attack, you will lose Stamina points depending on
the level of your attack. For instance, you'll lose one Stamina point if you
use a Weak attack, 2 points for a Strong attack, and 3 points for a Fierce
attack. When an attack of a specific level connects with the monster, your
Power Level will rise that many points (1 point for Weak, 2 for Strong, and 3
for Fierce). As that meter rises, you'll be able to use Elements to attack.

Element Attacks
---------------

Your second option will be to use an element to attack the enemy/enemies in the
battlefield or heal your party. Elements can be considered as magic spells, and
you can only use them when the Power Level rises. Each element has a specific
color known as an Innate, and each element can be performed only when the Power
Level fills to the element's level. It takes 7 Stamina points to use an
element, plus it'll empty your Power Level depending on the level of the
element you used.

Defending
---------

Well, there's nothing to explain here except for the fact that when you're
attacked while defending, you only sustain about half the amount of damage
you'd take if you weren't defending. You must have at least one Stamina point
in order to defend, or else you're out of luck using this option in battle.

Running Away
------------

As in pretty much all other RPG games, you'll be given the option to run away
from the battle. You use this option to run away from the enemy or enemies if
you don't want to fight in the battle. That's all I can say about this option
because it doesn't need much explaining.

Stamina Points
--------------

An important aspect of each battle is the Stamina points each character has.
Each time you attack or use an element, you lose Stamina points, whether or not
your attacks connect. You start off with 7 Stamina points in a battle, and when
you have less than one point left, you can't do anything in the battle until
you regain those Stamina points. You regain points each time another ally/enemy
attacks or uses an element in battle. If someone uses a Fierce attack, you'll
regain 3 Stamina points, regardless if that attack connects or not. The same
thing goes if someone else uses a Strong or Weak attack (you'll regain 2 or 1
Stamina point, respectively). If someone uses an element, you'll also regain
Stamina points (I don't know the exact amount though). To sum it up, you need
these Stamina points in order to do anything in battle, therefore they're
probably the most important aspect of the battle system.

Innates
-------

The classes that each character is classified under, known as Innates, are also
important to the outcome of each battle. The six classes are: Green, Red,
Yellow, Blue, White, and Black. All the elements have a specific Innate, as
does each character and enemy in the game. The Innates are made up of 3 pairs:
White and Black, Yellow and Green, and Red and Blue. Say someone with an
element with a Blue Innate attacks an enemy with the Red Innate, that enemy
will lose more Hit Points because Blue is the opposite of Red and elements with
those Innates do more damage to their opposites than any other Innate. There is
a graph in the upper-left corner of the screen during battle known as the
"Field Effect". This chart is split into 3 sections, and the smallest one is to
the right. Each time an element is used to attack and it connects, the Innate
color of that element will fill in the right-most section of the Field Effect
graph. When that graph is filled in entirely with one Innate color, any element
attack of the color in that graph will be much stronger. However, any
enemy/ally with the opposite Innate color will become weaker and attacks by the
dominating color will cause much more damage. If you want to use a Summoning
Element, all 3 sections of the Field Effect graph must be the same color.
You'll consume a Star Level each time you use Summoning Element as well.

After Battle
------------

When you defeat all the enemies and complete the battle, you'll be given three
options. You can either use the remaining power in your character(s) Power
Levels to automatically use a curing element and heal the party. You can choose
to heal like the above option, but you'll also be able to use Consumable
Elements to do so. You'll also have the option not to heal the party and exit.
There's no point in not healing because the power in the Power Levels don't
carry on to the next battle, so make sure to always heal after each battle!

Status Effects
--------------

During battle, there can be many different ailments caused by being attacked
with a certain Element. Here is a full list of the different effects, the
Innate color of that effect, and what they do:

Status Effects That Remain Even After Battle
(A Consumable Element of the same color as the ailment must be used to cure it)

Status Property Effects

Poison Green Loss of HP in and out of battle
Burn Red Defense decreases in battle; 2x damage outside battle

Status Effects That Occur Only During Battle
(Wears off in time, or a Consumable Element of the same color can cure it)

Status Property Effects

Color (E. Lock is an abbreviation of Unable to use
                      Elements)

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Dream Dungeon
-------------

You start this adventure inside a place known as Dream Dungeon. After the
pretty cool FMV at the opening sequence ends, you'll go inside the actual
dungeon. An elevator will rise up and standing on it will be Serge, Kid, and a
random third member. After the short conversation here ends and the elevator
door closes, take control and head left and down the hallway into the next
room. You'll appear on a balcony where you'll see a purplish crystal-like thing
in the room below. After Kid complains about not being able to reach it, head
back out of the room and go up and right. Follow the path down and right into
the following room and head down along the path. Go left up the steps and
continue down, then fight the Cybot you encounter if you want. It would help to
get you used to the battle system if you fought it now. Next, continue down the
steps and go down the path into the next room. Go left up the steps and into
the next room, and then follow the path up and left. Don't go up the first set
of steps to the right of the path just yet. Continue up and left past the
second set of steps and into the next room. Go up to the altar and press X to
make that purplish crystal in front of you disappear. Leave the room after that
and go down the path to that set of steps leading up to the right ledge with
another Cybot. Go up those steps and fight the Cybot if you want, otherwise
continue up and left across a bridge onto a purplish circular ledge. Stand on
it and press X to be teleported upward to a higher area. When you reach the
higher ledge, Kid will talk for a moment and the third character will comment.
After the conversation ends, walk up to the door and watch the freaky FMV after
this. After all that, you'll end up in Serge's house in Arni Village.

Arni Village (Home World)
-------------------------

After the FMV, you'll see that someone is telling you (Serge) to wake up. After
Serge gets off the bed and opens the windows, go to the bed and press X to find
the secret savings, which is 200G. Also, check out the pots in the left side of
the room to find a hidden Tablet Element. Now, walk down out of your room and
talk to your mother, Marge, in the next room. She'll tell you that you've slept
really late and that Leena was looking for you. Marge will also remind you of a
promise that you made, which was that you'll see Leena that day. Now, go right
out of the house into the actual village. Once outside, head left and talk to
the man in the far-left. When he asks for your opinion of the sawfish, pick the
answer "You're probably right!" and he'll give you a Komodo Scale after he
finishes talking. Now, head right along the upper path and talk to the small
boy there. After he tells you about his little problem, open the Key Items menu
and select the Komodo Scale to give it to the boy for free (don't charge him
money for it!). He'll give you an Uplift Element for your help, then give you a
hint about Poshul. After he's done, go up and into the house just north of the
boy. Go right through the house and down the stairs into the basement. Talk to
the man in the basement, then after he's done rambling for a while, he'll give
you a Shark Tooth. Now, go left up the ramp and continue left out of the house.
Back outside, head up the path to the pier and talk to Leena (she's the one
standing up). Talk to her and she'll ask you to get some Komodo Scales from
Lizard Rock because she wants a necklace. Agree to get her the scales, then go
up and off the pier.

Now, head down and enter the first house to your left. Go up into the house and
check the buckets next to the plant in the back to get a PhotonRay Element.
Now, exit the house and head straight down through the center of town. Go down
the ramp and search the cart next to the old lady to get a Shellfish Frame.
Now, head left and into the next area. There, talk to Radius (the old man with
the stick) and you'll enter a training battle against him. You'll learn about
using Elements and general rules about fighting in the game. I recommend it to
those who wish to get used to the flow of battle in this game. After that, go
left and check out the small bucket to the right of the steps to get an
AquaBeam Element. Then, enter the house and go down and left into the smaller
room. Inspect the small frame on the wall with the symbol to get a Cure Element
as well. Now, exit the house and go right to the previous village area and get
to the right side of the village. Go up into the building to the right of the
small boy you helped before and enter the restaurant. Go right and up to the
barrel, then check it out 4 times to get an Uplift Element. Then, go up the
steps into the back room and go up to the sheet on the floor and press X to get
a Heckran Bone. Also, open the chest on the right shelf to get an Ivory Helmet.
Be sure to equip that helmet right away! Now, go down into the previous room
and continue down out of the restaurant. Then, follow the path down and right
to exit Arni Village and appear on the World Map.

As soon as you enter the World Map, access the menu screen and save your game,
then head up and left from the village to reach Cape Howl. When you reach it
(as well as any other area from the World Map in the game), press X to enter
the area.

Cape Howl (Home World)
----------------------

In this area, there are small holes in the ground from which geysers erupt. Try
not to step across those holes when the geysers are erupting because you'll
lose HP if you do that. Anyway, head up the path, then left and open the chest
to get a Heal Element. Then, go right and up along the path until you can go
left again. Follow the path left and open another chest to get a Bone. Now, go
back right and continue up the path to the next area. There, go up the path to
the peak and press X by the rock to make Serge carve "Serge and Leena
forever..." on the rock. After that, go back down into the previous area, then
continue down and out of Cape Howl.

Back on the World Map, head down and left and enter the Lizard Rock area.

Lizard Rock (Home World)
------------------------

When you enter Lizard Rock, walk up to the large boulder in the path and press
X to push it into the water so it's out of your way. Then, follow the path down
and right, and then open the chest to get a Fireball Element. Be sure to
allocate it to Serge as soon as you get it. Now, go directly to the left and
you'll find the first Komodo Pup just standing there in the path. Approach it
to make it run into the cave. Then, get to the left side of the boulder to the
left of the cave and press X to push it in front of the cave, thus blocking the
entrance. Now, go back right and up, then left to find that Komodo Pup again.
Go near it to make it run back into the cave. Quickly run into that cave and
fight it since it's trapped. Use regular attacks to boost up your Power Level,
and then use the Fireball Element to attack the Komodo Pup. After you win this
fight and collect the Komodo Scale it leaves behind, head left along the path
into the next area. There, follow the first path down and left to the wooden
bridge. Before you cross it, go down the nearby ladder and open the chest to
the north in the water to get a Tablet Element. Now, go down and climb up the
ladder and take the path up, then when it splits, head up and left to the top.
Drop down to the lower ledge and along the path to find the next Komodo Pup.
Run towards it and it'll run south and jump down to a lower ledge. Run after it
since it runs around the path along the watery part of this area. Just run
after it and stay close until you catch it, then fight and defeat it like you
did with the other one. Take the Komodo Scale after you win, then make your way
to the lower-left section of this area. Go down and you'll find a hole in the
ground nearby, so press X to drop into the hole. When you land in the water
nearby, go right and onto the ledge and open the chest to get a Bone. Then, get
back into the water and head up into a cave. Head left onto another ledge and
open the chest there to get an Ivory Helmet. Now, go back right and down
through the cave, then go to the lower-left area of the water and press X to go
back through that hole. Now, go to the lower-right part of the room and follow
the path down into the next area.

In this area, you'll see the third Komodo Pup to the right, but it'll start
running if you move down the path. Let it run for now, and go down and push the
boulder into the water to make a chest rise to the surface. Open it to get a
Silver Loupe, then go right and up the first chance you get. Go up and defeat
the Beach Bum, then go up along the green tree to the next area. There, go up
and onto the higher ledge with the Beach Bum. Defeat it and go down along the
ledge back to the previous area. Walk down to the very edge of the high ledge,
and then wait for the Komodo Pup below to start walking past the cliff you're
on. Right before it walks in front of you, press X to jump down and you should
land on it to engage battle. Fight and defeat this Komodo Pup, then after you
beat it, get ready to fight the Mama Komodo boss! Read the Bosses section to
find out how to take care of this creature. After you win, you'll gain a Star
Level and all your stats will boost slightly. After the battle, you'll also get
the final Komodo Scale that you need for Leena's necklace. Now, head left to
the end and go up the leftmost path into the next area. Continue up and left
along the path, then drop down to the lower ledge and keep going left straight
to the World Map.

On the World Map, save your game if you want, then go down and enter the Opassa
Beach area.

Opassa Beach (Home World)
-------------------------

Upon entering this area, walk to the left and Leena will appear behind you.
She'll take the Komodo scales and sit down by the beach while you stand next to
her, then there will be a conversation between Serge and Leena. When she asks
if you remember talking by the beach when you were younger, say "I remember"
and she'll continue talking. When she asks about what to make of this day, pick
"We'll never forget this day!" as your answer. After that, Leena will try to
tell you something, but Serge will hear something else calling his name. An FMV
will start and show some quick flashbacks from when Serge was younger. After it
ends, you'll suddenly be warped somewhere, then knocked unconscious. An old man
and his Komodo Pup will find you lying on the beach. He'll tell you that Leena
is in the village babysitting, then he and his pet will leave. Now, just head
right out to the World Map again.

At the beach, you were warped to Another World, which is the same as the Home
World, but there are different things to be done/found. So, head right and
enter Lizard Rock again.

Lizard Rock (Another World)
---------------------------

As soon as you enter this area, you'll find that there are stronger enemies
moving around here. So, make sure to allocate the AquaBeam Element (Blue) in
the new space on your grid for Element Level 1. You'll need it if you encounter
the enemies in this area. For now, head down and follow the left path downward.
Press X when you reach the hole in the ground to come out at the end of the
secret passage. At the other side, just walk onto the small island and open the
chest to get a Feather. Now, go back down and left and press X at the hole you
came out of to crawl back through to the other side. Next, go back up and
follow the path right and down. Drop down to the lower ledge and continue right
across the wooden bridge, then follow the path down into the next area. Head
straight down to the lower-left corner and defeat the OpahFish there, then open
the chest to get a Bone. Then, go up and follow the path all the way right
through this area. Watch out when you pass the high ledge because a Komodo Pup
will jump down on you as you pass. Go right and up the path at the end to reach
the next area. Go up and right and fight the Komodo Pup in your way. After you
beat it, go right and open the chest it was blocking to get an Ivory Helmet.
Then, continue up and right out of Lizard Rock.

Back at the Another World Map, head right and enter Arni Village.

Arni Village (Another World)
----------------------------

When you enter Arni Village, head up the path and go up into the first building
to the right to enter a flower shop. Go right to the large pot (it was a barrel
in the Home World) and press X four times to get the IceLance Element inside.
Then, go up the steps and into the back room. Here, go up to the blue curtain
in the upper-right part of the room to reveal a chest with 5 Tablet Elements
inside! Now, get out of the back room and continue left and down out of the
flower shop. Back outside, continue up the path all the way to the pier. There,
talk to Leena and she won't even recognize you because the Another World is 10
years into the future. She'll tell you that there used to be a boy named Serge
in town, but he died 10 years ago by drowning. You can pick whatever option you
want when talking to her. After she suggests you visit his grave at Cape Howl,
leave the pier and enter the village area again. Head down and go left into the
first house you come across. Inside this house, go up and check out the bucket
near the plant to find a PhotonRay Element. Now, leave the house and follow the
path left to the second house, then enter that house. Go left and up the steps
into the following room. There, go up and left behind the high shelves and
check out that area to find a MagmaBomb Element. Now, go back down into the
previous room and continue right out of the house. Then, follow the path down
and left into the next area. Go left to Radius's house, but before entering the
house, check out the small bucket to the right of the steps to find a Turn Red
Element. Now, enter the house and go down and left, then check out the framed
symbol on the wall to get 5 more Tablet Elements! Then, go back up and right
out of the house. Now, head right to the main area of the village, and then
continue right and up the ramp at the end. Then, just continue down and right
out of town.

On the World Map, head left a small bit, then go up to Cape Howl.

Cape Howl (Another World)
-------------------------

When you enter this area, remember not to walk across the small holes in the
ground because if the geysers come out of them, you'll lose some hit points.
Head up and right, then when you can go left the second time (right behind that
giant rose-shaped thing in the path), head left and open the chest to get an
ElectroJolt Element. Make sure to allocate it as soon as you get it (you may
want to replace the Fireball Element in the Level 3 space with this one). Then,
go right and up the ladder to the higher ledge. Open the chest there to get a
Bone. Climb back down the ladder and continue up the path to the next area.
Head up to the peak of the hill and press X when you reach the rock. Serge will
check out the tombstone, then 3 people will suddenly appear behind him. They
say that he's the "ghost" of the Serge that died 10 years ago and their orders
are to capture him. After these guys are done arguing and get ready to seize
Serge, a mysterious girl appears and jumps in between Serge and the 3 men.
She'll challenge them to a fight and then a boss battle will start against
Karsh, Solt, and Peppor. Read the Bosses section for help on defeating these
guys. After you win, the three men will leave the area and the girl will
introduce herself as Kid. She'll ask if you want her in your party after that.
For now, just refuse her 3 times and she'll tell you she's heading to a town
called Termina, then leave. After that, you'll reappear in Arni Village.

Arni Village (Another World)
----------------------------

When you appear here, you'll be in Serge's room (you'll remember this place
from the Home World) and Leena and Poshul will be there too. Leena will offer
to help and will join your party, as well as Poshul. After they both join, it's
time to head to Termina in the north. So, exit this room and continue right
towards the exit of the house. A lady will come in and get upset, then request
you leave. So, go right out of Serge's old house. Then, head right and down out
of Arni Village to the World Map.

From Arni Village, head up and right to the path between the mountains to enter
Fossil Valley.

Mama Komodo
Found In: Lizard Rock (Home World)
    HP: 160
    Innate: Blue
Strategy: This is a fairly easy fight against the very first actual boss
creature of the game! You automatically enter the battle against Mama Komodo
after you defeat the third Komodo Pup. To defeat this boss, start off by
boosting your Power Level by using physical attacks first until you're at
Element Level 3. Then, use the Fire Element to attack effectively since the
Fireball Element is Red and does more damage to enemies of the Blue Innate.
Whenever the Mama Komodo attacks, be prepared to use a Tablet or Cure Elements
to recover from the attack. Just attack, then use the Fireball Element until
this boss is defeated.

Karsh/Solt/Peppor
Found In: Cape Howl (Another World)
    HP: 115/52/60
    Innate: Green/Yellow/Yellow
Strategy: Here is another pretty easy boss battle against these three men.
They even drop some hints in the first part of the battle on how to effectively
attack using elements. You should focus on defeating Karsh (the man in the
middle) because he has the strongest attacks. To defeat Karsh, use regular
attacks to build up both your characters' Power Levels, then have Serge use
ElectroJolt when he reaches Level 3. That'll take a good chunk of HP away from
Karsh. Have the Girl use regular attacks or use her Red Elements if you want.
Just keep attacking Karsh until you defeat him. Then, concentrate on Solt and
Peppor by using regular attacks until you defeat them.
