I. Introduction
---------------------------------------------------------------------

So, what has happened since the last Space Quest? Well, not much
actually. Basically, in the first game, the main baddie was Sludge
Vohaul (although you didn't see him in the game). What he was planning
to do was to kill every one on Xenon (Roger's home planet). However,
Roger defeated Sludge's evil plans, and expectedly, Sludge was not
pleased. This time around, Sludge intends to dump thousands of insurance
salesman on the planet of Xenon, and naturally, he must be stopped yet
again.

But what has changed from the last game? Well, not much. The graphics
have been changed a bit, and the difficulty is much harder than last
time. There's also more than one way to complete the game, and it's MUCH
more difficult to get maximum points in this game! But is it a better
game than Space Quest I? Hmm... I'd say not. Space Quest I, although a
smaller game, was just a bit better than Space Quest II. It just had
more replay value and things to try. Space Quest II is still a great
game though, and I'd advise anyone who likes adventure games to give it
a go.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
II. My review
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Space Quest 1 was created by Sierra in 1987. It was one of the first
graphic adventure games, where you had to actually type in commands in
order to make the game work. Space Quest 1 introduced Roger Wilco, a
janitor aboard the spaceship Arcada. He was happily snoozing away in a
broom closet, when some deadly aliens called Sariens took over the ship,
stole a precious device known as the star generator, and killed everyone
on board apart from Wilco. He wakes up shortly after hearing the
emergency call that the ship is going to explode in 15 minutes. After
escaping from the ship, the object was to retrieve the star generator,
and lead Roger safely home. Because this was one of the first adventure
games out, Space Quest 1 was obviously a great success, and it was no
surprise when a year later, Space Quest 2 came out.

Space Quest 2 is based shortly after Space Quest 1. Sludge Vohaul (the
bad guy from Space Quest 1), was accidentally defeated by Roger when he
blew the Sarien ship up. In the original, Vohaul was intending to kill
all the people on Xenon (Roger's home planet). In Space Quest 2, his
plan is to dump a whole load of insurance salesmen onto the planet
instead. So was this widely anticipated sequel a better game than the
original? Read on to find out.

Graphics - 8/10

Despite being made a year later than the original, Space Quest 2 still
has the same old blocky EGA graphics. Nothing about the graphics seem
better, but they are still fun to look at. Roger has changed, and looks
a little less like a cube, and more like an actual person. Other changes
are only slight. The scenery looks more detailed, and is generally well
drawn. The animations haven't improved, and Roger seems to still have
the same old jerky walk as seen in the original. There are actually
quite nice backgrounds in this game. To begin the game, there's a starry
sky. In another part, there's a well drawn spaceship. And all of these
backgrounds must have been extremely hard to draw back in 1988, because
they would have had only the most simple programs to draw with. In some
parts of the game, such as in Vohaul's Asteroid, some of the locations
tend to look a little less detailed than in the early locations of the
game. By today's standards, the graphics in Space Quest 2 are bad. But
back in 1988, the graphics in Space Quest 2 must have been absolutely
amazing, and that's the way people should try and remember them.

Sound - 4/10

One of the bad things about this game is the terrible sound. What sound
there is in this game echoes from somewhere deep down in the depths of
your PC. Basically, music and sound effects in this game are represented
by beeps and boops of different pitches. A low boop here, and high beep
there, put them all together at different speeds, and you will
eventually come up with something that slightly resembles music. The
sound is extremely loud, and can get very annoying at times. Thankfully,
there is a way to turn the sound off. By simply pressing F2, the
annoying high pitched sound will be turned completely off. Actually,
once you know about this function key, you might even leave the sound on
so you can hear what people actually had to put up with.

Game Play - 8/10

Space Quest 2 is totally different from the adventure games these days.
Usually with adventure games, you use the mouse to get, use or look at
certain objects, simply by moving the cursor and clicking on various
objects. In 1988, a mouse wasn't even invented yet, so you had to rely
on the keyboard to do all of the work for you. In Space Quest 2, you use
the keyboard to do everything. To walk left, right, up or down, you use
the arrow keys. To get, use or look at certain objects, you actually
have to type in what you want to do, such as "get the object". This is
actually a much more fun way of playing games, as it requires you to
think about what you are typing. The bad point about having this typing
interface, is that Space Quest 2 doesn't understand a lot of words, and
so you're forced to think of sensible ways of typing the sentence. The
game is very difficult in places, requiring you to really think about
the puzzle before you can get past it. The game is non-linear, meaning
that you don't have to follow a strict and certain path. This is good,
as it encourages you to go off exploring in the game whenever you like.
Another aspect of what makes the game so good is trying to find all the
points (250 is the most you can get). When you complete the game for the
first time, it's unlikely that you will find all the points, as there
are many different ways to complete this game. This game has great game
play as there are just so many things to do.

Last Ability - 8/10

Space Quest 2 is definitely a much larger game than the original. There
are many more locations, and they all seem to be varied and original.
This game is also more difficult than the original, and some of the
puzzles really require you to think in order to solve them. Whenever you
accomplish a certain important task in the game, you will get points
added to your overall score. There are 250 points to find in total, and
finding every single point is extremely difficult. For this reason, it's
likely that your score isn't going to be 250/250 straight away, so
you'll probably want to go back and try and find things that will get
you more points. By the 2nd game, you might have maximum points. By the
3rd game, you'll have probably found out that there's still a lot more
to do in the game besides getting maximum points. By the 4th game, you
might have found just about everything there is to do. And from then on,
you might just want to play the game for the fun of it!

Overall - 8/10

So, is this game better than the original? Well, the graphics have been
slightly improved. Objects, characters and backgrounds have more detail
on them than the original. The sound is unfortunately the same, high
pitched beeping sound that was heard in Space Quest 1. The game play is
actually less fun, because of the fact that the plot isn't as good, and
also because the puzzles may be too hard for some beginners to the
adventure game genre. The last ability has been vastly improved. More
puzzles, higher difficulty and more locations definitely make this a
long lasting game. Overall, Space Quest 2 is a good adventure game, but
lacks the style and game play of the original.

doesn't show you all the places and things to do in the game. Try
exploring around a bit to see some interesting things. Try completing
the game by using this guide first, and if you're still having problems
getting maximum points, read the point listing section of this FAQ.

VI. Easter Eggs
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Easter eggs are special hidden things that are put in a game by the
programmers just for fun. Easter eggs don't actually do much, they just
provide you with fun things to try. Try some of these easter eggs:

1. At any place in the game, type "cheat" and you will instantly win the
game with 255/250 points!
