RULES
Like in the real volleyball, the object of the game is to send the ball over the net in order to ground it on the opponent's court, and to prevent the same effort by the opponent. Each player has three hits for returning the ball. There are some differences, though (beyond the fact that teams consist of only one player):
- The ball can bounce back from the walls and the ceiling (a feature very actively used by advanced players);
- There are no blocks (well, not yet) and block contact does not add to the number of hits allowed;
- Only one game is played, instead of a set of 3 games.
- At first the ball is dropped from above -- the player who wins this ball starts serving.
When you send the ball over the net, and it comes back without the opponent touching it, you can hit it again even if you used all three hits allowed.
There are two versions of the game: contemporary and classic. Under the new rules, a game is played to 25 points with a minimum lead of 2 points. You can win a score by both serving and receiving the ball. You might remember volleyball by its classic rules, where a game is played to 15 points with a minimum lead of 2 points. You can win a score only if you are serving the ball, and if you loose when you serve, the right to serve goes to your opponent.
In this version you may also choose a custom game of 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 points.
You can play the game on one of the three skill levels: Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert. While you can probably beat Beginner, you will meet very strong resistance at the Expert level.
If you prefer playing against human, you can compete with your friends playing via IR port!
There are two ways to control your player: by the keyboard and by the stylus.
Using your keyboard you can move your player left, right, and jump with maximum strength. To re-assign any hardware buttons for the four functions (left, right, jump, and pause) use Menu/Game/Settings.
The stylus allows you to control your player more precisely than the hardware buttons. By tapping above the player you can control the jump strength (and the height accordingly) and the angle of the jump.
High scores are recorded for each combination of the difficulty level and game rules (contemporary/classic). The high score is simply the best difference between the win/lost balls at the end of the game. First number stands for your best score while the other is the score of the computer. For example, if your high score is currently 15:8 and then you win with 15:7, your high score become 15:7. High scores are not only for winning, but for losing too: it's so difficult to win on the Expert level, that it makes sense to count every ball you score. For example, if your high score is 1:15 (which means you scored only one ball before loosing the game) and then you finish a game with 2:15, it becomes your best score.
High scores are not recorded for games with custom length.
You can adjust palette settings through the menu (Menu/Game/Palette) if you have a 2-bit
gray-scale device (Palm III, Palm IIIx, Palm IIIe, Palm IIIxe, Palm V, Palm Vx,
Palm VII, Palm VIIx, Palm m100, Palm m105, Palm m500, Palm m505,
Handspring® Visor™, Symbol® SPT1500, Symbol SPT1700, Symbol SPT1740).
Only the two intermediate gray shades can be adjusted (white and black are
fixed).
VERSION 3.1 NEW FEATURES
A plenty of cool new features is available in version 3.1 of Volleyball:
- Power Ups
-
Catch the flying bonus sign and you'll get one of two power-ups to help
you win the game! To catch a power-up, simply hit the bonus with the ball.
A super-kick bonus sign looks like a small bolt of lightening and a
super-cloning bonus sign looks like two circles. In the IR game,
only the super-kick is available, but it is a standard feature
(not a bonus). We also instructed the computer player not to use
any of the power-ups; he is good enough without them. Power-ups last
approximately one minute.
- Super-kick
-
When enabled, press "Date Book" hard button (configurable
in Preferences, Kick item) and the player will execute a feet-over-head
jumping kick,, trying to kick the ball really hard. If you manage to
kick the ball with the player's legs, the ball will fly much faster compared
to a normal kick (presumably such a ball will be hard to handle for
your opponent). If you miss and kick the ball with the player's head or
body (which is basically the same thing), it will result in a normal,
non-enhanced kick.
- Super-cloning
-
When enabled, press "Left" and "Right"
simultaneously -- you'll have two players instead of one for some time.
Two clones play together and both reacting to your input. When both
clones arrive at the same place, they merge until cloned again. Cloning
does not change the number of kicks allowed in your territory.
- Skins
-
Skins are separate packs that change the look, and, sometimes, the
feel of the game. A skin is a PRC file that can be easily installed
on your Palm device, and once installed, Volleyball will automatically
recognize the new skin. You can select or delete skins from the
menu "Skin". "Set" selects a skin, "Delete" erases a skin from the
memory, then click "Done" for changes to take effect. When you delete
Volleyball, you will also automatically delete all skins (so
install your favorite skin again when your reinstall Volleyball). For
IR games, skins do not need to match, except for their physical
parameters (size and weight of players, speeds, etc.).
This version has two skins, "Palm Beach" skin and "Astronauts On The Moon"
skin. To play "Astronauts On The Moon" skin install VolleyballMoonSkin.prc and select it as
described above.
