Introducing You
---------------
Hey you, and welcome to the guide I've written up for one of the least
talked-about games in RPG history. Final Fantasy Mystic Quest was released
by Square Soft, in the USA in the fall of 1992. The game had a MRSP
(manufactured retail suggested price) of only $39.99. That was almost half
of what a new RPG for the SNES would end up costing you. Of course that was
then, and now the game can be found at your local Funco Land for a mere 10
bucks (probably even less). Mystic Quest had some new features not known in
previous Final Fantasy games. For instance, you can only have two characters
at one time, your magic no longer depends on MP rather on 'uses/counts' left,
and battles can be re-fought after you die. It was one of the very few RPGs
that were released in the US before Japan! :)

Mystic Quest Merchandise
------------------------
I only know of four different items related to Mystic Quest that were
available at one point in time.

1. Final Fantasy Mystic Quest game (SNES) Released in: 9/92
Of course the US release of MQ, pretty much everyone who considers him or
herself an FF fan has played it.

2. Final Fantasy Mystic Quest strategy guide (book) Released in: 9/92
The strategy guide--all I know is that you could buy it because the
instruction booklet that came with the game had an offer for it. I don't
know a single person who has read it but if you know anything about this then
let me know. I'm dying to know more about this book!

3. Final Fantasy USA Mystic Quest game (SFC) Released in: 9/93
The Japanese version of Mystic Quest--it actually came out after the US
version did! It was released sometime in the fall of 1993. The packaging is
pretty cool. The front cover shows Benjamin holding up a sword, just like on
the US box, but in chibi-anime style. ^_^ I got up to the Volcano and never
played it again. It is exactly like the US version from what I've played and
everything is in Japanese.

4. Final Fantasy USA Mystic Quest Sound Collections(CD) Released in: 9/93
The soundtrack to MQ. This has to be one of the best FF soundtracks you can
listen to judging by some reviews. There are additional remixes as well as a
finale track that includes samples from almost every theme with some rapping
going (some guy keeps repeating "Mystic Quest" over and over). If you have
an mp3 or sample of that track or any track from Mystic Quest please send
them to me.

Why The Negativity?
------------------
Who knows why? I'm talking about why people hate this game so much. It
wasn't meant to be a 50-hour RPG, and for the "old-schoolers," it was the
perfect RPG because (a) it didn't cost 70 bucks like Chrono Trigger and FF3
did and (b) it had darn good music and a pretty good story with a great cast
of characters. I have been involved in many arguments as to why this game is
bad and no one seems to have a really good reason to dislike MQ.

I have so many memories from Mystic Quest. This one time I was playing the
game on a Friday night 7pm, and I was inside Captain Mac's Ship and fighting
all the monsters with Reuben (coincidentally it was night time atmosphere
while I was at the ship) and I remember loving that part so much because the
game is just fun and the ship part was so cool. That was in June of 1995. I
know that sounds corny, but hey, it's a nice memory I have. If you have any
memories, I'd love to hear them, feel free to e-mail me at PB8J@hotmail.com

Mystic Quest Links

For now, I only know of one MQ website that you must visit!

|_______| -------------------

The main characters of Mystic Quest are the characters that help you out the
most. They fight with you and are very important in the entire story of
Mystic Quest. The storyline characters help you with clues and special items
you'll need in order to advance further and further into the world of Mystic
Quest. Most characters have ties to each other so read on before you get
started! :)

Benjamin (a.k.a hero)
---------------------
Benjamin is the most normal youngster you could imagine. Like most
responsible villagers of his age, he arose at the crack of dawn to take his
family's livestock to the upper meadow to graze. Other kids teased him
because he read while tending his heard, and because a village Elder had
taken him in as a promising student. Although Benjamin seemed mature beyond
his years, he still dreamed of being more than he was--faster, stronger and
more daring. Little did he know his wishes were about to be fulfilled the
hard way...

Kaeli
-----
Consider Kaeli your typical environmentalist that loves trees and forests and
wants to protect them. She joins you every now and then especially when
you're around forests and trees... Her father, Captain Mac, will be very
important to you in your adventure later. Though she may not look like it,
Kaeli is great at using axes! :) Kaeli lives in the town of Foresta.

Tristam
-------
Tristam is a treasure hunter who will stop at nothing until getting what he
wants. He spent his entire life searching for treasures and riches. He
finally sees past all the glimmer and money and decides to help you later on.
Tristam's style of fighting is more Ninja-like than anything; he likes to
throw ninja stars at enemies.

Phoebe
------
Phoebe is the granddaughter of Spencer, she joins you when she finds out you
are looking for her grandfather in hopes of saving him from being trapped in
a frozen tunnel. Phoebe excels in using claws and bow and arrows and will do
anything to help Benjamin whenever she can.

Reuben
------
Reuben lives in the town of Fireburg, a volcanic area waiting to erupt at
almost any given time. He is very strong, arguably the strongest character
that can help Benjamin because he can yield the Ball and chain. He does have
one weakness though--he's slow. It doesn't matter because with his strength,
he can practically knock off a single monster in one swing :)

Old Man (in brown cloak)
------------------------
This Old Man is mysterious. He leaves you after giving clues in your
adventure and not know is much about him. It is said that there is much more
to him than what meets the eye...

Spencer
-------
Spencer is an old man you must save during your adventure. He ends up giving
you something precious if you talk to him at the right time. He and Tristam
will eventually get along as well. Spencer resides in the town of Aquaria
along with his granddaughter, Phoebe.

Arion
-----
Arion is Reuben's father. Arion is more of an adventurer than anything else.
He got trapped in an abandoned Mineshaft and needs your help to rescue him.
He proves to be helpful later on when he can give you one special key
ingredient you'll need.

Captain Mac
-----------
Mac is the father of Kaeli and has his own boat! It is said it's the only
boat in the world of MQ so you should look hard for it. Mac will know if
you're friends with Kaeli if you have his cap to prove it.

|__________| ---------------------

The walkthrough was written by someone who's played through Mystic Quest
about six times (a.k.a. me :). It shows you what level you should be around
when arriving at a new place, what items there are, who your partner is at
the time, and strategies for defeating bosses.

The Items are separated by category. For instance, Cure Potions and Bombs
are normal items. Special Items are things like new weapons such as Knight
Sword or spells like Fire spell. Special items, almost always, are inside
treasure chests while normal items are inside wooden chests.

Another note on the items, whenever a (x) is followed by, say, Cure Potions,
this means that there are x number of wooden chests that contain 3 Cure
Potions each.

I decided to separate the walkthrough by covering every single place and town
in the game in the best order. You're probably reading this on the start of
a weekend or spring/winter break so print this out, relax, and enjoy! ^_^

We start our quest at the Hill of Destiny...

Hill of Destiny
---------------
LV: 1
Items: None
Special: None
Partner: Vacant

The game starts off by having Benjamin (that's you!) meeting an Old Man.
Benjamin tells the Old Man his village is gone and then the Old Man instructs
Benjamin to climb up quickly. Push the B button to get over the other side
of the hill. The Old Man will tell you the pains of the world and how the
Crystals are being used by evil. He'll then tell you that you must be the
Knight spoken of in the legendary Prophecy and suddenly a monster pops out
and fights you.

Have Benjamin simply attack it until it dies. Should you die, you can retry
by not giving up, a very nice feature included in this game. After defeating
the Behemoth, the Old Man will tell you he was actually guessing you were the
legendary knight and Benjamin questions his motives. The Old Man tells you
to follow him to the Level Forest and leaves. Benjamin decides there isn't
anything to lose so he decides to follow him. Enter the Level Forest via the
world map.

Level Forest
------------
LV: 1
Items: Cure Potions (1)
Special: Tree Wither (event)
Partner: Vacant

The Level Forest is a forest that's filled with monsters and wooden chests
all over. If you had an axe, you could cut down all the trees in your
path...

Once you enter the forest, talk to the Old Man and he'll tell you that you
should save the Crystal of Earth. He then leaves you without a trace. Head
north just a little bit to find an elderly man in blue. Talk to him and
he'll tell you that the boulder right next to him is blocking his way. Jump
over him and push it aside by holding up on the d-pad. He'll thank you and
gives you a Tree Wither, which he suggests you show to someone named Kaeli in
Foresta. Head into the right exit and enter the village of Foresta.

Foresta
-------
LV: 1
Items: Cure Potions (2)
Special: Cure (spell)
Partner: Vacant

Foresta is a simple 'backwater' town that's been struck by the evil presence
of the monsters who are weakening the Crystal of Earth. All the people have
turned old because of this and are very weak. Foresta used to be known for
its wonderful looking tree houses and colorful grass but now it's become
almost a wasteland.

Enter Kaeli's House and talk to Kaeli. She'll want to help save the forest
and decide to do so after looking at the Tree Wither you just got. Her mom
will be OK with it and she'll join you.

Exit her house and talk with everyone in the village. You'll learn that many
of the residents turned into old men and women because of the misusage of the
Earth Crystal by the monsters. Enter the backside of the house to the
northeast part of town and you'll find yourself a chest that contains a very
useful spell called Cure! You might want to rest on a bed in the
southernmost house after that fight with the Behemoth a while back. Once
you're done hanging around, head back to the Level Forest.

Level Forest
------------
LV: 1
Items: Cure Potions (3), Heal Potions (2)
Special: Axe (weapon)
Partner: Kaeli

Kaeli will cut down the tree, allowing you to progress further into the
forest. Defeat the monsters in your way and use Cure Potions when needed.
It is a good idea to control Kaeli manually so switch from auto by pushing
the Y button during battle.

It's a straightforward path and your goal is to reach the tree that's pink.
Before doing so, get Benjamin to at least LV.3 and make sure your HP is full.
When you get to the tree, Kaeli will tell Benj. that this is the evil tree
she was talking about all along and then, out of nowhere, a monster pops out
of the tree and poisons Kaeli. You'll have to end up fighting Minotaur but
don't worry, Kaeli will be able to help you with this fight :)

Minotaur Boss Battle
--------------------
Health Points: 240
Recommended LV: 3

Simply have Kaeli use Life spell on him to instantly kill him. ^_^

After the fight, Kaeli's Mom will rush to her daughter. Kaeli will fill you
in. She needs Elixir, which can be found in the Sand Temple. Benjamin
volunteers to go find it and Kaeli hands Benj. her Axe. Great, now switch to
the Axe since it's more powerful than the Steel Sword. Practice cutting down
the trees and try finding some wooden chests along the way. Exit the forest
when ready and take a rest at one of the beds in Foresta. Afterwards, head
to the Sand Temple and skip the Battlefield inbetween.

Sand Temple
-----------
LV: 3
Items: None
Special: None
Partner: Vacant

Head up until finding a lone treasure chest and open it. As you're opening
it, a man that appears to resemble Davy Crockett (hehe) approaches you. He
introduces himself as Tristam. Benj. tells him that he's looking for Elixir.
Tristam offers to see the Elixir for a whopping 9000 GP but that's way too
much for Benjamin! Tristam then makes a deal and decides to only give the
Elixir to Benjamin if he can help him find some treasure inside the Bone
Dungeon. Tristam now joins you. Leave the temple.

It might be a good idea to go ahead and fight through both of the two
battlefields now available before heading inside the Bone Dungeon to boost
Benjmain's LV up as well as get some valuables. If you need to rest, you can
always go back to Foresta. Regardless, once you've decided head inside the
Bone Dungeon.

Bone Dungeon
------------
LV: 5
Items: Cure Potions (2), Ninja Stars (5), Explosives (2), Seeds (1)
Special: Bomb (weapon), Steel Shield (armor), Quake (spell), Elixir (event),
          Sand Coin (coin)
Partner: Tristam

The Bone Dungeon is set up by floors filled with sand, bone, and water. Pay
attention to the bottom-right box that shows you where you are in the dungeon
once you enter a new area.

On 1F, instead of walking up the quicksand and jumping over the wooden chest
to get by, choose either the left or right side and battle your way through.
You'll thank me later.

On B1, jump on top of each turtle shell to get to the other side. Note the
pile of bones blocking your way up. Head into the water and through the left
skull passage way. Head up onto land and you'll come across a sealed up
door. Tristam will blow it open with a Bomb and decide to sell you some.
Say no the first time when he asks for 30 GP and then say yes the second time
to get the Bombs for only 15 GP. Remember that pile of bones I mentioned
earlier? Go back to it and blow it up with a bomb and you'll find a chest
which contains a Steel Shield. Now go back to where you got the Bombs and
enter the next room and battle your way through the enemies. Go down the
flight of stairs to the west of that room.

On B2, once you reach a closed in skull passageway, use a bomb to blow it up
so you can continue. Fight your way through the monsters and avoid the
quicksand or you'll go back. Go down the stairs and blow up the mouth of the
skull passageways. Blowing up the second one will let you get the Quake
spell in the next room, a valuable spell indeed. Blow up the last mouth to
get to the next and final part of the Bone Dungeon. Jump ontop of the turtle
shells to face Flamerus Rex.

Flamerus Rex Boss Battle
------------------------
Health Points: 2,200
Recommended LV: 7

Have Benjamin use Quake and Bomb on him. Tristam should use Ninja Stars and
Life whenever needed. If you run out of Quake, Benjamin can also use Cure on
FlameRus Rex to deal about 300 damage points. ^_^

After the fight is over, the Earth Crystal will appear and Tristam will hand
Benj. the Elixir he promised. Open the treasure chest to your right to find
a Sand Coin--you'll need this later. Now leave the Bone Dungeon and as
you're about to go, Tristam will take off. Hopefully you followed my
directions up to this point so that you won't have to fight a single monster
on your way out.

Your next stop is Foresta to give Kaeli some Elixir. After giving Kaeli the
medicine, she'll tell you about a place called Aquaria. Benjamin will decide
to check it out for himself. Aquaria is northeast of the Focus Tower. Your
next stop is the Focus Tower, east of the Sand Temple. Ignore the
Battlefield in your way for now.

Focus Tower
-----------
LV: 8
Items: Explosives (1)
Special: Fire (spell)
Partner: Vacant

The Focus Tower is the center of the world of Mystic Quest. It's divided up
by hard floors and special doors...

On B1, you'll be in some sort of corridor. You can walk through the wall to
your left to get to the Old Man quicker than you would if you went normally.
Talk to him and he'll tell you about Captain Mac and Phoebe, people Benj. has
never heard of but will play an important part later on. Once he leaves,
enter the stairway up to reach the first floor.

On 1F, Open the yellow door with a sword emblem on it and continue on to the
next flight of stairs to reach the second floor.

On 2F, head to your left and find the Fire spell. Exit the Focus Tower by
entering the north door.

Head past the Battlefield and enter the Libra Temple.

Libra Temple
------------
LV: 8
Items: Explosives (1)
Special: None
Partner: Vacant

Talk to the blonde girl at the end of the room. She'll tell you about her
problems and mention her name--Phoebe! Benjamin decides to help Phoebe out
and she joins you.

Remember those two Battlefields you passed by? Now's a great time to go
fight through them and raise Benjamin's level up too. There are two more
Battlefields on the way to Aquaria as well. You might also want to fight
through those if you want to really be prepared for what lies ahead.

Aquaria
-------
LV: 8
Items: Heal Potions (1), Refershers (1)
Special: Steel Helmet (armor)
Partner: Phoebe

Aquaria, once known for its wonderful gardens and eye-catching ponds and
lakes has now become a frozen tundra. Nothing is as it was before because of
the weakening of the Crystal of Water. All the residents are too cold to do
anything and it's so cold that one of the shop keepers can't even make any
more Cure Potions!

Once in town, enter Phoebe's House--the southwestern house. Phoebe and
Benjamin will engage in some dialogue and Phoebe will talk about where
Spencer, her grandfather, is trapped. You learn that the only way to melt
the ice is to find Wakewater. However, a monster from the Wintry Cave stole
the Libra Crest, which can warp you to the Life Temple where you can get the
Wakewater. Sounds confusing, doesn't it? ^_^ Anyway, before leaving
Aquaria, head into the northwest house and talk to the lady inside. She can
sell you a Steel Helmet for 200 GP--buy it.

Your next stop is the Wintry Cave, northeast of Aquaria.

Wintry Cave
-----------
LV: 9
Items: Explosives (1), Heal Potions (2), Cure Potions (3), Arrows (4),
          Refreshers (1)
Special: Cat Claw (weapon), Libra Crest (crest)
Partner: Phoebe

The Wintry Cave features a very large first floor followed by two additional
floors of ice and winter atmosphere. The first floor has a lot of walls with
which you can climb (more on this later).

On 1F, travel through the right way battling past the monsters. As you reach
the top of the wall, you'll fall down. Phoebe will give you the Cat Claw--a
claw that will allow you to climb the various walls in this dungeon. Look
for marks on walls and hold down the A button and then push the d-pad in the
direction you wish to climb. From the point where Phoebe gave you the Cat
Claw, head southwest and climb up that wall and follow that path to reach a
door. Blow it up with a bomb and enter the door to get to the second floor.

On 2F, battle your way through the monsters and get to the stairs to the east
of the room.

On 3F, you'll be hard to distinguish because of the ice platform above you.
Be careful because there are monsters waiting to surprise you. Look
carefully and fight your way through to get to the Squidite.

Squidite Boss Battle
--------------------
Health Points: 2,500 (Squidite), 260 (Sparna)
Recommended LV: 11

Have Phoebe individually take out each of the two Sparnas by having her use
her Bow & Arrows. In this battle, Benjamin should be more of the
curative/healer person because none of his spells/attacks are really
effective against Squidite. Have Phoebe use Thunder (wizard magic) and Bow &
Arrows when she runs out. Benjamin should use Bombs on Squidite if no one
needs curing.

After the battle, Phoebe will talk to you about the Libra Crest and how it
works. Before I tell you exactly what she means, why not open the chest and
get it? :P Ok, now that you have it, look at the symbol of the Libra Crest
and remember it. Now, whenever you see a tile that shows the symbol that
looks like the Libra Crest's, step on it and you'll be warped to a different
spot in the world of Mystic Quest!

Leave the Wintry Cave once you're through--next stop is the Life Temple! But
to get there, you have to go to the Libra Temple and step on the tile in the
center of the room.

Life Temple
-----------
LV: 11
Items: Cure Potions (1)
Special: Wakewater (event)
Partner: Phoebe

Once you warp here, you'll notice that the Wakewater dried up. But Benjamin
notices someone is in here and decides to look around. Head up into the next
room to find, none other, than the Old Man. He'll give you all that's left
of the Wakewater in a cute sac. Leave the Life Temple by stepping back on
the Libra Crest tile and head back to Aquaria with the Wakewater in hand.

Once you reach Aquaria, Phoebe and Benjamin will immediately head to the
frozen sapling and pour the Wakewater onto it. Unfortunately, nothing
changes except the sapling becomes unfrozen. The only way left to restore
Aquaria to its splendid state is to find the Crystal of Water in the Ice
Pyramid. Note that you can now buy Cure Potions at the Inn in Aquaria.

Your next stop is Falls Basin, north of Aquaria.

Falls Basin
-----------
LV: 11
Items: Explosives (1)
Special: Heal (spell), Jumbo Bomb (weapon)
Partner: Phoebe

The Falls Basin is an ice room filled with ice blocks that you can move in
order to progress through it all.

Once you enter, Phoebe will tell you to move the ice block in the way. Note
that the main theme in the Falls Basin are these ice blocks and moving them
around to get to the main boss. Move the first ice block in your way to the
northwest area and enter the room nearby. Fight the monster and enter the
next door, you should now be on a higher level. If you put the ice block at
the right spot, you should be able to jump on top of it, then be able to jump
to the other side. Keep moving it until you can jump on it, it will take
maybe two or three tries to get used to the spacing and all.

Now that you've moved your first ice block successfully, you'll have to do a
couple more. The second should go in the middle of the two platforms near
the entrance so you can get to the right side. You should now be able to
move two different ice blocks (including the one you moved to get to the
right side just now). Move one north, and then the other further north so
you can reach the Snow Crab. But before doing so, open the treasure chest
and get the Heal spell. Now prepare to face the Snow Crab

Snow Crab Boss Battle
---------------------
Health Points: 3,000 (Snow Crab), 280 (Desert Hag)
Recommended LV: 11

Have Phoebe use her Bow & Arrows on the two Desert Hags, individually.
Benjamin should use Axe against the Snow Crab whenever possible. Phoebe
should always use Thunder (wizard) solely on the Snow Crab to deal 500
damage.

After the battle's through, Phoebe will give you an upgraded bomb--the Jumbo
Bombs. They do a lot more damage than the normal Bombs do. Blow up the
doorway and enter it to clear the Falls Basin. Note that you will never be
able to enter the Falls Basin again for the rest of the game so make sure you
got that Heal spell!

Your next destination is the Ice Pyramid. However, notice all those
Battlefields you probably skipped? Now's a great time to beef up Benjamin
and also get some extra GP and items.

Ice Pyramid

          Cure Potions (3)
Special: Magic Mirror (event), Noble Armor (armor), Knight Sword (weapon),
          River Coin (coin)
Partner: Phoebe

The Ice Pyramid is an ice labyrinth filled with five floors of nothing but
sheets of ice. There will be times when you will need to thrust your sword
against a statue to progress throughout the pyramid. The monsters inside the
Ice Pyramid are invisible to the naked eye unless you find a secret mirror...

On 1F, right when you enter, go to the (dark) statue to the right. Phoebe
will mention trying to push it with something. Have Benjamin switch to the
Sword (remember push L/R to switch weapons) and thrust it in front of the
statue. This is going to be a reoccurring theme in the Ice Pyramid, so get
used to it for now. Once you thrust the statue, the doorway will open
allowing you to continue.

From the doorway, there will be three passages open for you to explore--up,
right, left. Head right and ignore all the passages that open north. You
should be fighting a few monsters, though you won't be able to see them.
Once you pass them you'll find a treasure chest, inside is a Magic Mirror,
which will allow you to see the monsters in the Ice Pyramid.

Go back to the entrance of the Ice Pyramid where you could go up or left and
choose left (where the two wooden chests are side-by-side) and then head up
until you can't go left anymore. There will be three monsters in the way of
three new paths now--left, up and, low right. Choose up, but not all the way
up. The up path also has a path that extends to the right. Head down this
path and go up the stairs to reach the second floor.

On 2F, battle your way through the monsters to reach the stairs to the third
floor.

On 3F, you'll be able to choose a left or right path. You'll have to go
through both paths, unfortunately. But choose the right path first because
you'll have to go through it and use your sword on the statue at the end of
the path to open the door (which you can reach via the other path).

Now choose the left path and battle your way through those monsters and once
you pass the door that you opened, head through the left wall to find a
secret room and up the next flight of stairs.

On 4F, head left and follow this passageway (you should only have to battle
two monsters) and enter the next stairs to reach the fifth floor.

On 5f, be careful because you can fall down back to 4F! Actually it's what
you want to do. From the fifth floor stairway, simply fall forward and
you'll be back on 4f but in a room filled with wooden chests and monsters.
Grab what you can but make sure you get the Noble Armor. In this room,
you'll have to thrust your sword against the dark statue to the left to open
the doorway to the right (next to the Noble Armor). Now go back to the fifth
floor as you did before.

Now this time, don't fall! Choose the right path from the beginning and stay
on the shaded ice path. You'll eventually come to an odd looking ice tile.
Blow it up with a bomb and fall down. Keep falling down, floor by floor,
until reaching the first floor. Thrust your sword against any of the dark
statues (it doesn't matter which), and fall down again to the basement.

On B1, you'll now be surrounded by a circle of monsters. Get the treasure
chest which contains a Knight Sword and head up to find the Ice Golem. He'll
tell you that he's enjoying his little game and leave. Head south and go
down the short stairs to be under the level you were just on (notice that
this floor has two levels) and enter the door into the next room.

Battle your way through the long stairway and enter the next room. You'll
now appear to be on the fifth floor but on a bridge. Continue into the next
room and you'll now be in the final room of the Ice Pyramid. Follow the
middle path to reach the Ice Golem and get ready.

Ice Golem Boss Battle
---------------------
Health Points: 6,500
Recommended LV: 15

Have Benjamin constantly attack with Bomb and Fire whenever no on needs
healing. It's important Kaeli concentrates on using Fire on Ice Golem
wheenver possible because she will do the most damage to him. Don't use
spells like Quake against the Ice Golem because he's very strong against it.
It will take you a while, but he'll be defeated easily.

After you defeat the Ice Golem, the Crystal of Water will shine again and
Phoebe will go check up on Aquaria. You're on your own for now but make sure
you get the treasure chest which contains a River Coin you'll need to open up
one of the doors in the Focus Tower. For now though, get out of the Ice
Pyramid the same way you came in.

Notice how green and blue everything is--this is because of your work in
restoring the Crystal of Water.

Now head back to Aquaria and talk to Phoebe (at her house), she'll tell you
that you should talk to her Grandpa. Remember? He's at the tunnel
underneath her house! But now that you restored Aquaria, you can go visit
him so head into the water (outside Phoebe's house, in Aquaria) and enter
either of the two openings underneath to reach Spencer's Place.

side note: I'm sorry to butt in here on a personal note, but to those using
an emulator, put the frame skip up to 9 and listen to the music. This is my
favorite music in the entire game! Yes, this is the same track that was
played while you were at Falls Basin. This track will be played in one more
place in the game--e-mail me if you know where and you'll be a true FF MQ
master. ^_^(Ok, now we can continue with the rest of the walkthrough. ^_^)

Oh, very cool. You know what this place reminds me of? The part in Final
Fantasy II where you get Tellah, and go through the dungeon and fight that
octopus-like boss at the end with the huge waterfall.

Okay, now that I've expressed how much I like Spencer's Place, continue south
and enter the next room. Head south some more to find Spencer and talk with
him. He'll ask how you melted the ice and Benjamin will tell him all about
what he did along with Phoebe. Spencer will then mention Captain Mac, but
you won't be meeting up with him anytime soon. He then decides to give you
the Venus Key because he believes you're the Knight spoken of in the
Prophecy. The Venus Key will open a locked treasure chest inside the Focus
Tower. Finally, Spencer will give you a clue as to where you should go next-
-the town of Fireburg. The only way to reach Fireburg is to go through the
Focus Tower so it's time to go back.

Do not enter the Focus Tower the way you came out of last time. Instead,
while on the map, from the Libra Temple, move up, left, down, down to reach a
new entrance of the Focus Tower, enter it.

Focus Tower
----------
LV: 16
Items: Cure Potions (1), Explosives (1)
Special: Venus Shield (armor), Blizzard (spell)
Partner: Vacant

You should be on 3F, once you are inside, head down the stairs to reach the
second floor.

On 2F, talk to the Old Man and he'll tell you to find someone named Rueben in
Fireburg. He'll also give you another hint regarding the statue next to you.
For now, blow up the caved-in opening with a Bomb and open the treasure chest
in the next room. If you have the Venus Key, it should open and reveal the
Venus Shield. Good, now head left a bit to find another treasure chest.
Inside will be the Blizzard spell. Now, about that statue. Notice that you
will be able to move it. Your goal is to move the statue next to the tile
block--a little on the left. From the starting point of where the statue is,
push it this way: Down 2 steps, Left 2 steps, Down 3 steps, Left 5 steps.

If done right, the tile block (on the left) should be next to the statue (on
the right). Here's how it should look like:
                  _
                 |_|
tile block---> []|_| <------statue

Now that you've moved the statue in the correct position, exit the Focus
Tower and, this time, at the map, from the Wintry Cave, move down, and down
to enter a different entrance of the Focus Tower (note, this is the entrance
you've already been into).

On 2F, head down the stairs to go back to the first floor.

On 1F, find the blue door and open it and enter the stairs to go back to the
second floor.

Back on 2F, you should see the statue below you, jump on top of it and then
jump to reach the other side. Head up and enter the next flight of stairs to
reach the third floor.

Finally, on 3F, head north into the opening to exit the Focus Tower.

Now that you're outside and on the map, head up and enter the village of
Fireburg.

Fireburg
--------
LV: 16
Items: Heal Potions (1), Refreshers (1)
Special: Battle Axe (weapon), Multi-Key (event), Mega Grenade (weapon)
Partner: Vacant

Fireburg is a town built near a volcano and mine shaft. As you may have
noticed on your trip here, there are quite a few earthquakes as well. There
are little lava spots everywhere, and the floors are made of gravel.

Talk to everyone. Enter the house to the southwest and buy the Battle Axe
from the lady selling it for 500 GP. You should have more than enough GP at
this point in the game.

Your next stop is Reuben's House, the house to the left of the Hotel. Talk
to Reuben and his mom, they'll tell you that Arion, Reuben's father, is
trapped inside a Mine and the only way you can reach him is by using some
special bombs. Problem is that the guy who has them locked himself up in one
of the houses in Fireburg.

Now head to the house in the pit in the center of town by using your Claw to
reach it. Try opening the door and it'll be locked. Now go to the Hotel
just above the house.

In the Hotel, you may recognize someone standing on the left counter--
Tristam! Talk to him and he'll help you out by giving you a Multi-Key which
can open the door. Note that if you didn't try to open the locked door and
talk to Tristam beforehand, he won't help you out. Now that you have the
Multi-Key, head back to the house in the pit and open the door.

Talk to Arion's friend inside, he'll tell you all about Arion and the
dilemma. Benjamin will ask him about the special bombs, and Arion's friend
will teach you how to use the Mega Grenades.

Good, now that you have what you need, it may be a good time to go back to
all those Battlefields you bypassed to reach Fireburg. With Reuben on hand,
it should be a cakewalk. If you don't need the EXP and gold, then at the
very least, make sure you go back to the Battlefield north of the Libra
Temple and get the Exit spell as it will be a very useful spell to have in
your lineup. Also, clear out the Battlefield directly south of the Mine to
get the Thunder spell.

Once you're done, your next stop is the Mine, which is to the west of
Fireburg.

Mine
----
LV: 18
Items: Cure Potions (2), Heal Potions (2), Explosives (3)
Special: Charm Claw (weapon)
Partner: Reuben

The Mine features pink floors with small caves throughout that are filled
with wooden and treasure chests. In order to get by, you'll have to walk on
silver bridges and mine carts. Your goal is to get to the right side of the
mine (you start on the left).

From the entrance, there will be three different paths you can go to. Up and
right via the silver bridges and down via the mine cart. Choose up via the
silver bridge; ignore the cave entrance because there isn't anything special
inside. Now go right via the silver bridge and continue right and ride the
mine cart all the way down. Blow up the cave entrance with a Bomb and enter
it. Battle your way through the monsters and open the treasure chest for a
Charm Claw, an upgrade from the Cat Claw you used to have.

Good, now exit this cave entrance and go down via the silver bridge and all
the way back to the main entrance of the Mine. You've now completed the
first goal which is to get the Charm Claw, now your next goal is to finish
the mine.

From the entrance, this time go down via the mine cart and down once more via
the silver bridge. Head right via the next silver bridge and climb up the
wall with your claw. Now you should be able to go either up or right, pick
up and continue north until finding a silver bridge that travels to the
right, step on it and you should find, Jinn, the boss of the Mine.

Jinn Boss Battle
----------------
Health Points: 6,000 (Jinn), 510 (Red Bone)
Recommended LV: 19

Immediately take out the two Red Bones; have Reuben attack one and have
Benjamin either use Exit or Blizzard on the other to dismantle them in
seconds. Next, concentrate on having Reuben attack Jinn with his Morning
Star and using Life whenever Benjamin or himself is in trouble. Have
Benjamin first attack with the Charm Claw until Jinn gets poisoned by it
which should knock off 90 points of damage each round from this point on in
the battle. After Benj. attacks with Charm Claw, have him use Quake and
Thunder continuously until Jinn wears out and dies.

Once you take care of Jinn, enter the opening and continue right. Reuben
will spot Arion and throw a bomb to blow up the boulder. The boulder will
fall down and Arion will be able to go back to Fireburg. By the way, now
that you have the Exit spell you may want to use it to exit the Mine in
flash.

From the Mine head south past the boulder you just blew up to enter the
Sealed Temple.

Talk to the Old Man and he'll give you a mysterious line "Do you have 10GP
for a cup of coffee?" If anyone knows what there is to this, e-mail me. I
just think he's messing around with you. Anyway, you can get some Cure and
Heal Potions and if you have the Gemini Crest (won from one of the
Battlefields nearby), you can warp to the Wintry Temple and get some more
potions. There isn't anything else to do in here so just leave.

Your next stop is the Volcano but rest at the inn and buy couple of seeds in
the Fireburg Hotel before heading out.

Volcano
-------
LV: 19
Items: Cure Potions (3), Heal Potions (3), Refreshers (1), Explosives (2)
Special: White (spell), Mask (event)
Partner: Reuben

The Volcano is in eyesight's away from a beautiful landscape of green forests
and mountains. Inside, however, is a different story. The Volcano features
hard floors of volcanic structure and dangerous gas areas, that feature
monsters the naked eye cannot see. There is one way around this, and that's
the special Mask hidden inside one of the treasure chests.

From the entrance, you can either go left or up. Choose up and fight the
Were Wolf guarding a door entrance. Go inside the entrance and maneuver your
way to the treasure chest (you can't see yourself doing this so just try to
feel your way through). Open it for the White spell--quite possibly the best
spell in this game! Good, now that you've gotten White, your next goal is to
get the Mask so you can safely see the enemies in the fog areas to come
later.

Go back to the entrance and this time go left, up the small flight of stairs,
jump to the other side and up the next long flight of stairs to reach the
first gas area.

From here, you can either go up or left. Note that now you are in the gas
part of the Volcano and there are monsters you cannot see here. There aren't
that many though, and you should only run into one or two at the most until
you get the Mask. Anyway, choose left and enter the doorway and maneuver
your way through and out. Head right and up the next long flight of stairs.
Now go left and then up another flight of stairs and you should be out of the
gas areas. Continue up a little and open the treasure chest to find the
Mask! Since you have the Mask, you'll be able to see all the monsters in the
gas areas from now on so you can avoid them if you want. Now your next
objective is to, well, get out of here and find the boss.

From where you got the Mask, go back to the first part of the gas area where
you could choose to go either up or left (and I told you to go left). This
time, go up the flight of stairs and continue up and enter the doorway and
feel your way through and go up the next flight of stairs. Now you should be
out of the gas areas for good. So head north some more and you'll find
Medusa who you'll have to battle if you want to exit the Volcano.

Medusa Boss Battle
------------------
Health Points: 2,500 (Medusa), 555 (Were Wolf)
Recommended LV: 20

Your first goal in this fight should be to take out the two Were Wolfs so
they won't be a bother for the rest of the duration of the fight. Have
Reuben attack one and Benjamin use either Blizzard or Exit on the other Were
Wolf. Now that they're gone, Medusa will be a pain in the you-know-what to
beat! This is gonna be tough so be prepared. Have Reuben attack with
Morning Star and if either Benjamin or himself is in some trouble, use Life.
For Benjamin, have him constantly attack with White (wizard spell) to rack up
some major damage. Only have Benjamin use Cure/Heal if Reuben really needs
it, otherwise keep using White and Medusa will be dead in no time.

After Medusa has been dealt with, head down the stairs and you'll be back at
the World map. Now, go back to Fireburg and rest at the Inn and save and
head up from the Volcano to enter the Lava Dome.

Lava Dome
---------
LV: 21
Items: Cure Potions (13), Heal Potions (8), Refreshers (2), Explosives (6)
Special: Life (spell), Moon Helm (armor), Sun Coin (coin)
Partner: Reuben

The Lava Dome is the core center of all fire in the land of Mystic Quest.
The flames can be dangerous if one was to stay too long and the monsters
don't seem to mind all the heat. This is a confusing maze area that features
a lot of doorways and openings as well as a ton of monsters all over. To get
to the boss you'll have to step on a special tile that will open the big
doorway.

From the main entrance, you'll be able to either go left or right. Head
right and go down the two small stairways and enter the doorway opening.
Once inside, move right and then up some and then jump on the two tiles in
the lava pit. While on the second tile, throw a bomb to blow up the silver
rock in the way. Then jump to the other side and fight the Stheno. Open the
treasure chest afterwards for the invaluable Life spell! This is probably
the single most important spell in the game because it can fully cure one's
HP to the maximum and during battle it also heals all status ailments! Now,
your next goal is to find the Moon Helm.

Now go back to the main entrance of the Lava Dome, and this time go left but
don't enter the opening you see. Instead, go down the stairs and head left
and enter this opening. While inside the opening, head up and jump on the
tiles over the lava pit. Throw a bomb at the silver rocks in the way and
jump across. Head north up the stairs and north some more. Battle your way
through the barrage of monsters and open the treasure chest for a Moon Helm.
Your third goal now is to find the special tile switch.

From where you got the Moon Helm, go back to where the tiles were with the
lava pit and you'll notice a ton of monsters to the right with three wooden
chests. Head right and then south the few stairways and enter the next room.
Head right some more and exit this part of the Lava Dome and you should be on
the outside. Step on the tile switch near you and you should see the big
doorway open up. Now your final goal is to get to the doorway--but that's
easier said than done.

From where you stepped on the tile switch, go back to the entrance of the
opening--the one you just entered with the tiles all over and the lava pit
and when you got the Moon Helm. You should see some dots leading down the
next level of the Lava Dome. Use your claw and go down. Good, now head
right a bit and enter the first opening you see. You should now be in the
inside part of the Lava Dome. Head up some more and enter the next room.
This room is a little confusing. Your goal is to get to the upper level so
head left and go up the small steps. Now head right and then up and then
left to enter the next room. Head left and exit the inside part. You should
now be outside and there should be a long stairway going up to your left and
some dots that you can climb directly to your right. Go up the stairs and
enter the opening you see (don't fall down!). Head south down the stairs and
you should be in a very large room. This part's really confusing, more so
than the other room I mentioned. In this room, just like the other one,
you're supposed to get to the top level. Head down, then up the small steps
to get up. Now head up, then right, then go back down to the lower level,
head down some more, now go back up to the upper level by going up the small
steps, head left, then right, and finally back down to the lower level and
exit by entering the opening. You should now be outside and the door should
be open for you to enter! Now enter it.

You'll now be in a very, very large room with tiles for you to step on. Head
up and when you see two paths, head left. Next head up and then finally
right and up one more tile to find Dual Head Hydra--the boss of the Lava
Dome.

Dual Head Hydra Boss Battle
---------------------------
Health Points: 14,000
Recommended LV: 23

Benjamin should always use White until he runs out to knock off 1,300 damage.
Reuben should keep using his Morning Star for 500 damage unless someone needs
Life spell. If Benjamin runs out of White, have him alternate using Bombs
and Cure on himself/Reuben when needed. Be patient and realize that you'll
have to cure yourselves almost every other round of fighting.

After you defeat Dual Head Hydra, the crystal will shine again and Reuben
will tell Benj. about a town called Windia which he heard might be near the
last crystal. Afterwards the Volcano will erupt safely to the east past the
mountains making a new way for you to cross. Now open the treasure chest for
a Sun Coin so you can use it to open the next door in the Focus Tower--your
next destination! To exit the Lava Dome easily, head right from where the
Crystal is hovering and then enter the next two openings to get to the world
map.

Once you're at the map head south to the Volcano and now you can choose to go
right to a new Battlefield. I suggest you whack out the monsters here now
that you have Reuben along and get some good valuable EXP. Once you're done,
head south some more and enter the Focus Tower with the Sun Coin in hand.
Enter the way you went into to get to Aquaria.

Get to the main room on 1F, now open the purple door all the way to the

Mac's ship. OK, now notice those stairs going down? Go down and continue on
this passage way.

You should now be on B2 of Doom Castle with some really cool music playing.
Beat the monster in the way of the treasure chest and open it for the Aero
spell--a really wicked wind elemental spell.

Now, go back up the stairs and head right and exit through the opening.
You'll be at the World Map, head right to the Rope Bridge.

The Rope Bridge is a broken up bridge that leads to the eastern part of the
world of Mystic Quest. Nothing is really special about it and it doesn't
look like anyone's crossed it in a while.

Head right some, and a monster will appear out of nowhere. Reuben will take
care of him but he'll end up falling down and then Benjamin will have to
fight the monster. Just use Exit or any of your other powerful spells on him
to kill him off immediately. Benjamin will go down one of the vines and see
if Reuben is all right. Then Tristam tags along and joins you!

You'll have to leave Reuben behind for now. In the mean time, now that you
have Tristam with you, try going down the vines and see if you can find some
items. Exit the Rope Bridge when you're finished.

Alive Forest
------------
LV: 24
Items: Cure Potions (1), Heal Potions (1), Refreshers (2)*,
          Ninja Stars (1)*
Special: Giant's Axe (weapon)
Partner: Tristam

Just like in the Level Forest in the beginning of the game, the Alive Forest
has a bunch of trees you can cut down with your Axe. The Alive Forest is a
mysterious forest and as it name applies, there are definitely some living
things here you may not expect. You'll just have to complete it to find out.

From the start, head south and cross the bridge, cutting down trees in your
way and fighting the monsters. Head right cutting down the large area of
trees and then go down some. You should spot a treasure chest in sight. Go
for it and open it for the most powerful axe in the game--the Giant's Axe.

Good, now go back up and continue right and you should see a gigantic looking
tree. Try talking to it. Unfortunately, it won't answer to Benjamin and
Tristam. So Benjamin get another idea and thinks that perhaps Kaeli can talk
to it since she's great with trees.

Kaeli is located in Aquaria, your next destination. You'll have to go back
through the Focus Tower to get there.

*Hidden in two trees are Libra and Gemini Crest tiles that will warp you back
to a certain secret room in the town of Foresta. Each room features a wooden
chest that contains either Refreshers or Ninja Stars. The rooms are blocked
by walls so you can't really do anything inside except get the treasures.

Once you reach Aquaria, head to Phoebe's House (come on you should know where
that is by now!). Talk to Phoebe and she'll tell you that Kaeli is taking a
nap and that you should chat with her Grandpa, Spencer. You remember where
he lives, don't you? Right underneath Phoebe's house--you'll have to get to
the water part of town and then enter one of the two openings underneath the
house.

Spencer's Place
---------------
LV: 25
Items: Cure Potions (1)
Special: Dragon Claw (weapon)
Partner: Tristam

Once inside Spencer's Place, head south and talk to Spencer. Spencer will
tell you that he need's someone named Otto's help to help him dig deep enough
to reach Captain Mac's ship. He'll then mention something about some
"amazing armor" and Tristam decides to go with Spencer on some treasure
hunting. But at least he gives you a new claw, the Dragon Claw--which so
happens to be the most powerful claw in the game. :)

Anyway, Phoebe will meet up with you while you're still here and she'll throw
a bomb to try to dig deep enough. Unfortunately, the plan backfires and the
place collapses! Luckily you and Phoebe manage to get out. She tells you to
go see Kaeli while she goes and looks for Spencer and tells him what just
happened. OK, next stop is Phoebe's House just right above you.

Talk to Kaeli while she's in bed and she'll join you so you two can go find
Otto in Windia. But to get to Windia you'll first have to get through the
Alive Forest, remember that's where the Giant Tree was that you needed Kaeli
to talk to in the first place. Next stop: The Alive Forest.

Once you get back to the Giant Tree, Kaeli will talk to it and it will
finally answer back. It will only help you if you can whack the monsters
inside of it. Well, you know the drill by now; it's time for a new dungeon.

Giant Tree
----------
LV: 25
Items: Cure Potions (10), Heal Potions (10), Refreshers (2),
          Explosives (3)
Special: Meteor (spell)
Partner: Kaeli

The Giant Tree is filled with monsters occupying it inside. Its five floors
are made of wood and lumber. There are red mushrooms inside which you'll
have to cut down to progress further. It is said that the Dragon Claw works
wonders against most of the monsters inside.

From the main entrance on 1F, head north and climb up to the next level. Use
should see some wooden stakes shaped like the letter "Y." Make sure you have
the Dragon Claw equipped and use it by pushing the A button to propel
yourself onto the wooden stake. Keep doing this, going around the entire
room. The stakes you need to grab are in this order: Down, Down, Left, Up,
Right. Enter the Mouth Opening nearby to enter the second floor.

On 2F, head right and then down and enter the Mouth Opening. You should now
be in a room filled with red mushrooms you can cut down with your axe.
Battle your way through all the Mad Toads and enter the next Mouth Opening to
find a treasure chest (guarded by a monster--kill it easily :). Inside is
the Wizard Spell, Meteor, which is quite powerful but not as great as the
White spell. Anyway, go back to the main room of 2F.

Now, this time go left and then down. Use your Dragon Claw to cross the gap
and then climb up to the next level. You should see a closed mouth (just
like the mouth openings except its mouth isn't open). Use your sword and
thrust it against the mouth to open it up! Now enter it to reach the third
floor.

On 3F, from where you came from, notice the wooden stake all the way to your
left. Use your Dragon Claw to get to it (don't bother to go down and
explore--there's nothing but wooden chests and dead ends!). Follow the path,
west, and then north and enter the mouth opening to enter a red mushroom-
filled room. Battle your way through all the Leechs and get to the exit to
the west.

You should still be on the third floor but in a new part. Head south some
and you should see a vine going all the way down. Fall down and you should
now be on the second floor.

On 2F, from where you just landed, head up and poke your sword at the closed
mouth to open it up and then enter it to go back up to the third floor.

Back on 3F, s-a-v-e before climbing up the wall! This is very important
because if you mess up and fall back down, you'll have to do half of what you
just did all over again. When climbing up, you'll have to move a little to
the right each time and then fall down. To fall down you have to let go of
the A button but you don't want to fall down the whole way--just so that you
grab on to the next climbing part of the wall. To do this perfectly, you
have to let go A when you want to fall down but then immediately push and
h-o-l-d A back down again so that you'll grab on to the dots. Once you get
past this part you should see a closed mouth up above. Enter it by using
your sword once again to reach the fourth floor.

On 4F, head south and you should see three different mouths, two of which are
already open and one, which is closed. Enter either of the two that are
already open since they both lead you to the same place (the closed mouth
leads you to a dead end!).

Anyway, once you're inside, follow the path and climb up to the next level.
Exit out of this room and you should be back outside but on a higher level.
Follow the path in a clock-wise manner and climb up to the next level.
Thrust your sword against the closed mouth opening and enter it to reach the
fifth floor.

On 5F, you'll notice a lot of open gaps all over. Don't worry, you can't
fall down if you try to step into them. Head up and climb up to the next
level and face Gidrah. If you can beat it, the monsters will disappear
inside the Giant Tree.

Gidrah Boss Battle
------------------
Health Points: 13,000 (Gidrah), 750 (Skuldier)
Recommended LV: 28

From the very beginning, your first goal is to take out the two Skuldiers so
they don't get in the way for the rest of the battle. Have Benjamin and
Kaeli both cast Aero on the entire enemy group so it kills both Skuldiers and
also inflicts some damage on Gidrah. Next, have Kaeli continuously cast Aero
on Gidrah. Benjamin should cast Meteor or Aero on Gidrah. Immediately cast
Life if anyone turns into stone or needs some curing.

After Gidrah's dead, walk up to the closed opening and talk to it. The Giant
Tree will thank you for freeing itself from the monsters and decides to carry
you to your next destination--the Kaidge Temple.

Special: None
Partner: Kaeli

There's nothing much around here. Talk to the Old Man in brown up above and
he'll mention something about Captain Mac telling you about the "Prophecy."
OK, all there is in here is a wooden chest and a crest tile which you don't
have the crest to step on for so just leave.

Head east to the town of Windia.

Windia
------
LV: 28
Items: Heal Potions (3), Refreshers (1), Explosives (1)
Special: Cupid Locket (armor)
Partner: Kaeli

Windia, just as its name applies, is a town that is quite windy. The wind is
blowing from a distant mountain to the east. The wind is so bad that
everyone stays inside. The Crystal of Wind, the very last crystal you're
looking for, is said to be somewhere near Windia.

Once in town, head into the first house to the right; and talk to the old
professor inside. Benjamin will ask if he's "Otto"-- the guy you've been
looking for. He won't say, but he tells you that his daughter, Norma, went
to the tower up north using his Rainbow Road. Problem is, that, she's stuck
there because the wind blowing from Mount Gale, to the east, broke the road-
making machine. You'll have to stop the wind from blowing, but to do so you
have to get to the source of it all, which is Mount Gale.

Before you go, however, you'll want to head into the first house to the left
and buy the Cupid Locket from the lady inside for a mere 300 GP. Also, it's
a good idea to rest up at the Inn so you'll be fully prepared.

Stop by the Windhole Tunnel on the way to Mount Gale.

Items can be very helpful if you know what they're for! :) Items can usually
be found in chests. There are two different types of chests in Final Fantasy
Mystic Quest--wooden chests and treasure chests.

Chests
------
As I said before, there are two types of chests. Wooden chests are brown in
color and look like homemade boxes. Treasure chests are more extravagant and
detailed in look, and thus, contain far more valuable stuff than wooden chest
do. ^_^

Wooden Chest - These contain useable items (see below) such as Cure Potions
Treasure Chest- These contain anything from spells, to weapons, to armor!

Useable Items
-------------
Useable Items can be used via the menu or during a battle

Cure Potion - Recovers HP
Heal Potion - Recovers status ailments
Seed - Replenishes all three magic classes for one character
Refresher - Recovers status ailments such as lowered defense during battle

Event Items
-----------
Event Items are items you can't necessarily use, but are usually needed

Elixir - Kaeli needs this so she can be saved from the Minotaur's poison
Tree Wither - A sample of the Level Forest, proof that the forest is dying
Wakewater - Some water from the Spring of Life, supposedly melts evil ice
Venus Key - A key with the symbol of Venus, used to open a chest...
Multi-Key - This is the only key you'll need because it opens every door!
Mask - Allows Benjamin to see through the gas in the volcano
Magic Mirror- Can help Benjamin see invisible monsters in the Ice Pyramid
Thunder Rock- You need this to help power the Rainbow Road...
Captain Cap - If Cap'n Mac spots you with this, he'll know Kaeli is your pal

Crest Items
-----------
3 different crests, help you warp to different locations in the world of MQ

Libra Crest - Warps you to places if you step on tiles with Libra symbol
Gemini Crest- Same as the libra crest, except it's tiles with Gemini symbol
Mobius Crest- Same as above, except it's the tiles with Mobius's symbol

Coin Items
----------
4 coins, 4 doors in Focus Tower ... To unlock the secrets, you need the coins

Sand Coin - Allows you to open the gold door in Focus Tower
River Coin - Allows you to open the blue door in Focus Tower
Sun Coin - Allows you to open the purple door in Focus Tower
Sky Coin - Allows you to open the green door in Focus Tower

You can switch between weapons by pushing L or R. You can't equip your
partner's weapons.

Note
----
As far as I know, weapons do not affect Accuracy, Defense, and Evade. At
this point in time, I have no clue how strong certain weapons really are.
This is because as you grow in levels, weapons grow in attack power. Which
means, basically, I have no idea what the real attack power of a weapon is
since it changes as you level up. It grows higher and higher so it's a good
thing.

Benjamin's Weapons
------------------
Benjamin can equip four different types of weapons: Swords, Axes, Claws, and
Bombs. Swords can be used to poke certain objects while walking around, axes
can be used to chop down trees in the way, claws can help you climb up walls,
and bombs can blow open blocked doorways. The Dragon claw is the only weapon
that acts as a hookshot and allows you to pass gaps since it grabs hold of
stakes and pulls you to them. Remember that the claws can cause a ton of
different status ailments to enemies. Use this to your advantage!

Name Description
---- -----------
Steel Sword This is Benjamin's first weapon. It's a standard sword.
Knight Sowrd Benjamin's second sword; fairly powerful
Excalibur The most powerful of all swords

Axe Stronger than Steel Sword--lets you chop trees
Battle Axe Stronger than Knight Sword and axe
Giant's Axe The best axe in the game! Very powerful indeed

Cat Claw Can poison and paralyze some monsters
Charm Claw Causes poison, paralyze, sleep, confuse, blind
Dragon Claw Same as above & also can cause doom, stone, silence

Bomb Causes weak damage to multiple targets
Jumbo Bomb Causes decent damage to multiple targets
Mega Grenage The strongest of all bombs! Causes major damage

Partner's Weapons
-----------------
Sometimes partners can equip weapons Benjamin can equip. However, only
partners can equip very powerful weapons like the Morning Star, which only
Rueben can yield.

Name Description Partner

Armor is automatically equipped once you get it. You can't equip your
partners' armor while they are wearing it.

Key for bonuses
---------------
D   = Defense
E   = Evade
A   = Attack
S   = Speed
M   = Magic
"." = 0

Note that no armors affects "Accuracy." It's unknown what Partner's Armors
affects anything other than Defense, so at this point in time, that's all
that's listed for that section.

Benjamin's Armor
----------------
There are four types or armor Benjamin can equip--Helmets, Body Armor,
Shields, and miscellaneous (charms, locks, etc.). Some armors protect
against certain elements. If you're having trouble with certain magic being
cast on you, try seeing what the armor protects against and how much
defensive power it has.

Armors also give you bonuses. The most obvious is defense, but there are
other bonuses too. For instance, all three helmets Benjamin can equip give a
+2 bonus for attack! But it's not really all that significant & important,
just fun to know. ^_^

Partner's Armor
---------------
Hey your partners also have to equip armor too! But too bad, cause Benjamin
can't equip any of them.

Spells are different in Mystic Quest. Rather than the typical MP system, all
spells are considered to be of the same value of usages. For instance, if it
says 11 under the White menu, that means that you can use Exit 11 times, or
you could use Cure 5 times and Exit 3 times and Heal 3 times. All spells
within a certain type of magic will always be equal. However, different
types of magic have different amounts of uses. Wizard magic will always have
the least amount of maximum uses because it features the most powerful of all
magics!

Target means what the spell can affect. For instance:

If a spell has an "S" (single) next to it, you can cast the spell on just one
target alone. You can't use the spell on multiple targets, just one
person/enemy for each use. This is good because you can concentrate all your
focus on single target and create maximum efficiency (i.e. using Cure on one
single person for the full benefits).

If a spell has an "M" (multiple) next to it, you can cast the spell on
multiple targets only. You don't have the option to use the spell on just
one enemy. Remember that when using a spell on multiple targets, its effect
isn't as strong is it would be if it were targeted on just one person/enemy.

If a spell has an "S/M" (single/multiple) next to it, you can cast the spell
on just one target or an entire group! Keep this in mind, especially with
spells like Cure which you can use on both members at one time!

Key for Target
--------------
S   = Single
M   = Multiple
S/M = Single/Multiple

White Magic
-----------
As typical RPGs go, white magic almost always mean magic that will cure HP,
status ailments, or help you in other ways. One spell, Exit, however, can
actually banish (kill) one enemy instantly! But you won't gain the EXP you
would have if you defeated it normally.

Name Description Target
---- ----------- ------
Exit Exits you from dungeons; during battle sends enemy to oblivion S
Cure Restores HP, can use on multiple targets S/M
Heal Heals status ailments except for death S
Life Heals all status ailments including fatal, and restores max HP S

Black Magic
-----------
Usually black magic means attack magic in RPGs, which is also the case in
Mystic Quest. Most enemies are very weak against certain spells so
experiment.

Name Description Target

Blizzard Turns enemies into snowmen! :) S/M
Fire Causes a large flame to engulf the enemy S/M
Aero Causes a vacuum-like tornado to whirl the enemy ??????

Wizard Magic
------------
Wizard magic is exactly like black magic in that it causes damage to enemies
but it is far more powerful because it relies heavily on elements.

Name Description Target
---- ----------- ------

Boy for a short RPG, MQ has a ton of monsters. But just like in practically
every RPG, some monsters look exactly alike but with different colors. But
this is to differentiate between them because it usually means they're more
powerful than their earlier counterparts. Use this section if you need to
check up on a certain monster's HP, EXP, or GP values.

Boss Strategies Revisited
-------------------------
Having trouble with a boss and don't want to skim through the walkthrough
just to find out how to beat it? Then look no further. Note that all bosses
are listed in order of appearance. It's very possible to beat any of the
bosses below the recommended level--actually; you should be able to with no
trouble whatsoever!

Minotaur
--------
Health Points: 240
Location: Level Forest
Recommended LV: 3

Simply have Kaeli use Life spell on him to instantly kill him. ^_^

Flamerus Rex
------------
Health Points: 2,200
Location: Sand Temple
Recommended LV: 7

Have Benjamin use Quake and Bomb on him. Tristam should use Ninja Stars and
Life. If you run out of Quake, Benjamin can also use Cure on FlameRus Rex to
deal about 300 damage points. ^_^

Squidite
--------
Health Points: 2,500 (Squidite), 260 (Sparna)
Location: Wintry Cave
Recommended LV: 11

Have Phoebe individually take out each of the two Sparnas by having her use
her Bow & Arrows. In this battle, Benjamin should be more of the
curative/healer person because none of his spells/attacks are really
effective against Squidite. Have Phoebe use Thunder (wizard magic) and Bow &
Arrows when she runs out. Benjamin should use Bombs on Squidite if no one
needs curing.

Snow Crab
---------
Health Points: 3,000 (Snow Crab), 280 (Desert Hag)
Location: Falls Basin
Recommended LV: 11

Have Phoebe use her Bow & Arrows on the two Desert Hags, individually to get
rid of them quickly. Benjamin should use Axe against the Snow Crab whenever
possible. Phoebe should always use Thunder (wizard) solely on the Snow Crab
to deal 500 damage.

Ice Golem
---------
Health Points: 6,500
Location: Ice Pyramid
Recommended LV: 15

Have Benjamin constantly attack with Bomb and Fire whenever no on needs
healing. It's important Kaeli concentrates on using Fire on Ice Golem
wheenver possible because she will do the most damage to him. Don't use
spells like Quake against the Ice Golem because he's very strong against it.
It will take you a while, but he'll be defeated easily.

Jinn
-----
Health Points: 6,000 (Jinn), 510 (Red Bone)
Location: Mine

Medusa
------
Health Points: 2,500 (Medusa), 555 (Were Wolf)
Location: Volcano

Dual Head Hydra
---------------
Health Points: 14,000
Location: Lava Dome
Recommended LV: 23

Benjamin should always use White until he runs out to knock off 1,300 damage.
Reuben should keep using his Morning Star for 500 damage unless someone needs
Life spell. If Benjamin runs out of White, have him alternate using Bombs
and Cure on himself/Reuben when needed. Be patient and realize that you'll
have to cure yourselves almost every other round of fighting.

Gidrah
------
Health Points: 13,000 (Gidrah), 750 (Skuldier)
Location: Giant Tree
Recommended LV: 28

From the very beginning, your first goal is to take out the two Skuldiers so
they don't get in the way for the rest of the battle. Have Benjamin and
Kaeli both cast Aero on the entire enemy group so it kills both Skuldiers and
also inflicts some damage on Gidrah. Next, have Kaeli continuously cast Aero
on Gidrah. Benjamin should cast Meteor or Aero on Gidrah. Immediately cast
Life if anyone turns into stone or needs some curing.

|_|/_/\_\ -----------

Rumors get started so often in RPGs it's hard to keep track of em' all! From
the resurrecting of General Leo in FF3 (disproved rumor) to the uncursing the
Cursed Shield in FF3 (proven rumor), it seems that it's best to sort them all
out and discuss them all here. There aren't' that many in FFMQ, actually
only one of the following is really a rumor. The rest are things I have yet
to try and I am reluctant to say are actually true. So, if you know for
sure, e-mail me.

Buying Elixir From Tristam?
---------------------------
Status: Solved!!

This rumor got started a long time ago and no one has really bothered to do
it because it takes too long--until now. The rumor refers to when Tristam
asks you to either pay 9000 GP for Elixir or help him find treasures in Bone
Dungeon. It is said that if you built up 9000 GP and talk to him, you won't
have to go inside Bone Dungeon and he would give you the Dragon Claw
(remember Tristam gets this after you beat the bone dungeon). I guess the
rumor would work by making the game think you beat the bone dungeon and
letting you continue.

But I hate to burst your bubbles, it doesn't work! It's completely false,
and I spent a lot of my free time doing it! All you really get is a LV23
Benjamin and that's it! That's how long it takes you to get 9000 GP. After
doing this, you can imagine how sick I was of fighting the monsters in the
Level Forest over and over again...

Gain More Spell Uses After LV41?
--------------------------------
Status: Testing

I've heard that if you gain 10,000 EXP you will gain more and more spell
uses. Keep gaining 10,000 EXP for more spell uses for wizard, black, and
white magic.

At this point in time I have yet to try this rumor.

Pushing A For Phoebe?
---------------------
Status: Solved!!

It was said that when Phoebe joins you for the first time in the Libra
Temple, you can make her have more maximum HP (specifically 680) than she
would usually join you with by pushing A three times when she joins you. The
problem is that the guy never said exactly when you should push the buttons
and so it's kind of confusing and not really worth it anyway. It seems very
suspicious and highly false..

Yeah it's false. It seems to me that the person who started this rumor had
no clue what the heck he/she was talking about. Phoebe will always join you
with 680 HP regardless of what you do. This is simply a made-up rumor that
really is way off.

Gain A Free LV.UP?
------------------
Status: Solved!!

Gain enough EXP so that the next battle you fight, you will positively gain a
LV.UP. Now, find a Battlefield that rewards you with EXP, and start the last
of the ten battles. Once you gain your LV.UP normally, the game will give
you EXP but also another LV.UP!

This rumor is true and effective. You can get to LV.7 with only about 5000
EXP while it would take you about a couple more thousand to reach LV.7
normally. Better yet, wait until the end of the game to reach the higher
levels even faster. Use this to your advantage.

/_/\_\ ---------

This code chart should be easy to follow. Sometimes a description may have
an * next to it. This means that there is more to the code but I couldn't
fit it in one line so I had to write it below ^_^. Also, whenever a code
requires two lines, I put a "+" to separate the lines. For instance, a Game
Genie code may be 1234-6789 + ABCD-EFGH. This means that the code is two
lines long. Remember that "-" is part of the Game Genie input for codes.

The same applies to Pro Action Replay codes except that there is no "-" to
separate anything.

As for Types, that simply means what the code actually affects. If the code
affects for instance, damage you inflict on an enemy, then it is a Battle
type. If it affects items, then it's an Item type, and so on.

Note that alternates are *not* part of the main code; they are different
codes altogether but produce the same effect as the main code. There may be
alternates to certain codes below. If so, the alternate is below the main
code. Sometimes a code may have two or even more alternates! This is
because there are different versions of Mystic Quest.

Whenever a (?) is followed by a code, this means I have no idea exactly what
this code will do. ^_^

Game Genie Codes
----------------
These codes can work if you are using a Game Genie device. If you're using
an emulator, simply type in the code via the emulator's option. Note that I
haven't tested them and would appreciate it if someone does to confirm they
are reliable. Have fun ^_^

they work. If you've tested any or all of them, e-mail me and you'll get

Missing something? Can't seem to find it, and it's driving you crazy?
You've come to the right place.

Battlefields

There are 20 Battlefields in all in the world of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest.

magicians dream of. Sometimes your reward may be a mere few points of EXP.
Who knows what you'll find, but if you're curious and want me to jump to the

Did Jya Know?
-------------
Did YOU know?

-You can blow open doorways with a Bomb even if you have 0 left--try this
-To get over 300 Cure Potions, make sure you have none left and then buy "0"
-The maximum level Benjamin can reach is 41
-To defeat Dark King the easy way, have Benjamin use Cure on him
-Using Life spell on almost every normal enemy will kill them instantly
-Wait at the title screen to view some demo plays--very cool
-This game was called "Final Fantasy USA Mystic Quest" in Japan
-This was the only FF to be released in the US before Japan
-Contrary to popular belief, this game was made in Japan, not in the US

Thanks goes out to Square Soft for making this great game, CjayC for putting
this FAQ up in the first place, and everyone (including Cjay and Mmoogle) who
wrote their own MQ faqs. This was in no way trying to make a better FAQ,
simply a different one because you guys have made great FAQs.

Thanks to Death Locke for making www.rpgclassics.com/ffmq. The best Mystic
Quest website on the net. I borrowed a ton of info from his website
including monster stats data as well as the level up chart.

Thanks to Game Genie, and the people who created the GG and PAR codes.

Check out my Breath of Fire 2 and Super Mario All-Stars FAQs.
