                                  4. Offensive Strategies

#1 The Give and Go

Quite a simple one, begin by sailing down the centre. You should
have a man at the left or right side. Pass it to him when you're
at the top of the two faceoff circles, and hold X. He should send
it back. Hopefully, no opposing players picked it off, and you can
one time it at the goalie.

#2 The Cut In

First off, find if your player is left or right handed. If he's
right handed, sail down the right side on your TV, or vice versa
for left handers. Perform a little 'S' by almost touching the back
wall/just below that line, and coming back toward the front of the
goalie. Cut in front of him while holding Square and you'll have a
good chance of smacking it in. Actually this strategy is probably
        best for scoring a goal.

#3 The Rebound

This is easiest with a breakaway. First of all, slap a shot at the
goalie from the blue line (preferabley a slap shot). Now, if the
goalie fails to catch it and the puck does not sail of his head,
wrist shot it again and you may get a goal.

#4 The Breakaway

First of all, get a breakaway. Now, let go of Circle if you're
holding it at all. Mash the little Triangle button when you're
near the bottom-middle of the circles, or if the goalie is out of
his crease, mash at the middle of the circles. With luck, he will do
the fake-left-and-go-right move (or vice versa) at which time you
shoot. It is also possible to deke out the goalie with the other
deke move, but it's less effective and unlikely to go in.
*Note* I realized this later, but you don't have to mash Triangle
at all. It dekes automatically (sort of, it's a bit complicated).

#5 The Faceoff Goal

Get a faceoff in your opponents end. Mash X while holding toward
the inside player (the one closet to the goalie). Immediately press
Square and with luck it can go in.

#6 The Pure Luck/Bouncer

I'm not really sure why I'm including this, as it is quite rare, but
here it is. Take a shot from the middle of the circles with one
defensive player in front. With luck, it will bounce off of him and
then bounce again off of one of your players. Quite a funny replay
when you see the puck zigzag around a flabbergasted goalie.

#7 The One-Timer

Probably the most well known, all you do is pass to an open teammate
and quickly press Square. Done. Not very likely to go in unless you
        have a beautiful set up.

#8 Lack of Name

This one doesn't really have a name. Anyways, once in a while, the
goalie steps way out of his net. This is sooooo easy to score on.
Either one-time it to a player a ways away, use the deke move, or
you can actually skate around him. Here's what I mean. I do the
little 'S' move and he sprawls out, leaving the net a big gaping
        hole.

#9 The Chip

This is VERY rare to do, but I'll put it in anyways. You have to
flip the puck over the goalie when he's out of the net. Typically,
take a weak shot from the blue line, with luck it can sail just
over his shoulder and just under the crossbar. I've done it all
        of 5 times.

#10 The Blue Liner

Discovered this little doozy while goofin around with offsides. It's
the same as the Faceoff strategy, but from the blue line. The goalie
must be sleepin for it to go in though.

#11 Tipping the Puck

Don't know why I didn't include this earlier, but here's what you
do. Basically, shoot from far away while there's some of your
allies in there and they are very likely to tip it in. I scored a
hat trick in under 30 seconds once because each time it was
        tipped in by Sergei Berezin.

#12 Pummeling

Another easy strategy, fire off constant shots or one timers at the
goalie until eventually he gives up a big fat rebound which you can
drive into the back of the net.

#13 Goalie's Back

It's happened once and only once, but here goes. I took a slapshot
and it bounced off the glass behind the goalie so hard it came back
off the goalies back and in the net. Another thing that can happen
is it bounces right back to the shooter, likey to score.

#14 Drop Passing

Boy would I ever love it if I knew how to drop pass, but here's what
you would do. Skate up to mid range of the goalie, drop the puck,
and hopefully another player will scoot in and fire.

                                  5. Defensive Strategies

#1 The Grab and Go

This involves being 'cornered' into your zone and leaving with a
goal. Wait until one of the top guys (Center, Right Wing or Left
Wing) gets the puck, then strike. Steal it off him with Square and
then proceed to Offensive #3 or #4. Hehehehe.

#2 The Simultaneous Smack

Easiest with multiple human players. Quite simply, Big Hit all of
your opponents at the same time. Even easier with 5 guys whose names
are in red. You can end up with a 3 on 1 if you're well timed.

#3 Stopping a Goal

Not much of a strategy, but I'm running out of ideas. If you see a
player setting up for a one-timer, obviously jump on him so he can't
shoot. Then the one who was going to pass is left to make a crappy
shot which shouldn't go in, or an errent pass is made.

#4 Shot Blocking

Personally, I find that button useless, but here's what you would
do. If you see an opponent winding up, but you're too far away to
check, you can try to block it. Tap L1, but make sure that this
player is going to shoot, or you'll look like an ass when he
        passes it to someone else.

#5 Glass Smashing

Another cheater strategy, try smashing an opposing player through
the glass. Crucial when your down by two players.

                                  6. Powerplay Strategies

#1 Shoot like Mad

Like the name says, just keep shooting at the goalie. Sooner or
later the goalie will do his little wipeout move and you can blast
        it past his monkey ass.

#2 The Wrap Around

I've never actually done this, but I suppose it is possible. I'm
thinking you have to be really fast to get it to work. Anyways, all
you do is swing around the back of the net and quickly wrist shot
        it in.

#3 Whoooooosh!

Quite a killer move, I've scored tons of times like this. Get open,
or a breakaway while in front of the goalie and wait for the goalie
to attempt a poke check. Now you score. Sort of hold left while
you're shooting and you quickly deke out the goalie automatically.
        Tons of goals.

                                  7. Shorthanded Strategies

#1 Defence, Defence, Defence

Like the name, just defend. If you ever get the puck, slap it down
the ice. You'll kick yourself for being as cheap as the AI
        though...

#2 Offence?

Correct, you can do offence when you're shorthanded. In fact, in my
season, 2 and a half years running, my Mats Sundin has scored 37
shorthanded goals. Of course, lots of others have in the 20s too.
Anyways, here's how to do it. It involves attacking one guy with
the puck, while the other grabs it for a breakaway. There are
other ways to get a shorthanded goal, but not nearly as probable.

#3 Wasting Time

I don't really like it when people do this to me, but I'll put it in
anyways. All you do is pass. And run. Pass it to a player, run
around. If the opposition gets to close, pass again. Effective
until someone punches you (be it the game or real life).

#4 Drawing a Penalty

There's no real good way to do this, but try jumping in he middle
of a group of players and grabbing the puck. If you have enough room
you can attempt to score. If not, try to get checked from behind.
Usually a cross checking, hooking or some common penalty will be
        called.

#5 Glass Smashing

This is just the same as Defence #5. Another cheater strategy, try
smashing an opposing player through the glass. Crucial when your
        down by two players.

                                   8. Glitches and Oversights

Glitch #1 Stuck Players

This one's one of the more common ones. Once in a while,
usually off a faceoff, the player(s) will freeze. The worst
instance of this occured when I was on the power play and
somehow a defenceman, who happened to get frozen, got the puck.
After 90 seconds passed by and the power play ended they stole
the puck and scored! WTF is that??? There was nothing I could do!

Glitch #2 Moving Players

Slighty less common than the above, but it's happened a few
times. Anyways, once in a while a player, just skating down the
ice normally, will all of a sudden 'warp' in the corner (usually
        upper right). No clue why.

Oversight #3 Overtime Winners

The most irritating of all glitches. Once in a while, you will
get a tie and go into overtime. If the opposing team scores, but
you just exit the game normally, it's a tie. You have to wait like
30 seconds to make sure they win. Very annoying when you want to
        play fair (like yours truly).

Oversught #4 Green/Red Names

Near the end of your season (be it 27 to 82 games), go to the
Standings menu. Scroll left-wise so Eastern/Western Conference
goes by. For some reason, some of the names disappear. I hope I've
described it right, because I can do it really easy.

Glitch #5 No Goal?

This has only happened once. Anyways, I happened to get on a
breakaway with Sundin, did a little deke move, _SCORED_ but play
continued. I looked very carefully at the replay. I plainly deked
        and shot it in. GRRRRR....
It's actually happened twice more now. It's happened to the AI a
        few times now too.

Oversight #6 Consulting the Video Replay

Not sure if this a glitch, but here goes. This has happened once
before. Same situation as above, breakaway with Sundin. Except
this time I was goofin around and I ran into the goalie. The goal
was disallowed for no reason! Once again, only once this has
happened. It's come to my attention that this is an oversight
because this video replay-foot in the crease crap was abolished
and sent to the firey depths of hell where it belongs!

Glitch #7 Voice Announcers

Once in a while, the voices will merge and repeat. One time, I
continued to play anyways. The voices did not stop until I
scored, then nothing at all. After that the game froze when I won.

Oversight #8 Suspensions

Seriously now folks, what the hell is the point of putting
suspensions on the Team Reports menu when I have NEVER received
one. Never. In over 400 games, never. What the hell.
It's been submitted to me that some people have indeed been
suspended, yet I myself have never received one to my knowledge.
Note - It has come to my attention that getting 3 misconducts
in a game causes a suspension. Lemme know if anyone else can
        confirm this.

Oversight #9 Injuries

What's up with the injuries in season mode? They last the game
and that's it??? No one on my team has ever been injured for
longer than that game where they were injured.

Glitch #10 More Announcement Problems

I remembered that several times the announcers have said things
wrong. For instance, 'blank' steals the puck. Very often is
incorrect. I've even had players have their penalty over that
        they didn't commit!

Glitch #11 Smashing Glass

One problem with smashing a player through the glass is it opens
an invisible hole for that player. He just walks in and out of
that space for a while. Eerie looking.

Oversight #12 Penalty Calling

I've had billions of incorrectly called penalties. Cross checking
of invisible people, lack of penalty shots when there should be,
delay of game penalties (like when the goalie drops the puck,
picks it up, drops it etc. or like when you knock the net off it's
hinges with no one around). The list goes on...

Oversight #13 Penalty Shot

More of a cheat than a glitch, but the testers obviously missed
it. Anyways, if the opposition ever gets a penalty shot, quickly
make a line change. 5 on 1, whoooo! Not very effective against
the computer, but human opponents will crumble. HAHAHAHAHA!

Glitch #14 Faceoffs

Sometimes when you have a faceoff another player is highlighted.
Unsure why this happens and it makes winning them difficult
because the computer takes the faceoff for you.

Glitch #15 Offsides

The offside rule in this game is totally screwed. To be offside,
you must touch the puck when another one of your players is
already passed the line. If you shoot it past the blue line and
one of your players touches it, then it is offside. However,
while watching hockey on TV I've seen it been called the way
NHL 2000 does it. I'll have to look into this further.
Evidently if the defenceman doesn't immediately play the puck
        it's called offside.

Glitch #16 Invisible Puck

Submitted by a reader, but this has happened to me too. Anyways,
sometimes the puck goes invisible for no reason. Quite weird
when it happens during gameplay. A faceoff usually rectifies
        this error.

Glitch #17 Walls

WOAH! What a queer one this was. Anyways, I was playin along as
usual when all of a sudden I get a penalty. No ordinary penalty
mind you. The _wall_ cut across the ice. Me thinking this was a
one time thing, continued playing. It happened again, during
gameplay! I passed right through it, but oi was it weird.

Glitch #18 Icing

Yet another laziness one, you can shoot from anywhere between the
red and blue line that are closet to the opposing net and it will
not be offside. Occaisonally it will be called icing.

Overside #19 Regulation Ties

Can't believe I forgot about this one. Anyways, when you go to
overtime both teams receive one point unless Team A pulls their
goalie and Team B scores whereas Team B would receive both points.
However, in NHL 2000 this is not the case. There is no fourth
column for that extra overtime winners and thus no regulation
        ties.

Glitch #20 Arrows

Not much of a glitch, but it is one still. Anyways, you may have
noticed the arrow when you're off screen. Well, you'll also notice
that it is flashing on the wrong side.

Glitch #21 The R1 Button

Geez, twenty one is a lot of glitches for one game. Anyways, this
one TRULY angers me. Ever noticed that when you're opponent smacks
the puck down the ice that if you press R1 you get stuck off
screen? That's because the bloody game selects your center player
        and freezes him! Arghhh!

Oversight #22 Rubber Posts

Ever notices how fast and far the puck flies when it hits the
post? Holy hell, what were they thinking with that rebound
        factor?!

Glitch #23 Incorrect Goalie Stats

Ever noticed the largeness of some of the ERAs? Quite weird how
players manage to get a 14 goal per game average. In addition,
I've also had a win missing from my goalie. Weird indeed.

Glitch #24 Wiggle Foot

Reminded to me by a reader, once in a while the goalie flips out
and he spasms like crazy. It's never happened to me during
actual gameplay, but it's extremely likely it's possible.

Oversight #25 The Timer

Ever noticed how fast the clock goes? 5 minutes is actually about
3 minutes. Hmmm...that's all there is to say about this mistake.

Glitch #26 Created Players

Not at all a glitch, but currently there's no other place to put
this. Anyways, in my season there's a created player called
Jim Hughson, the announcer, that the computer created. Only time
will tell if other famous people are in there. After this finding
I found Bill Clement too. Interesting.
Note - I also found a guy named Funky Swadling. hehehehe

Glitch #27 Season Length

I may be the first person to experience this, but anyways I remember
hearing somewhere that the Season is 10 years long. Not true. I just
finished the 5th year and it said 'Exit Dynasty Mode'. I wonder why
        it's called dynasty...
Note - The PC version does have 10 seasons, PSX has 5

Glitch #28 Spinning Goalie

Much like the foot thing, the goalie will spin around in a circle
sometimes. I suspect this is probabley more of an AI glitch than a
        graphical one.

Glitch #29 Extra Saves

Sent by a reader, evidently sometimes the goalie will have saved
300 shots! This obviously results in about a 99% GAA.

Glitch #30 Disappearing Puck

An odd one occured. I took a penalty shot, scored, and the puck
        vanished in to nothing. Odd.

Glitch #31 Scoring, but not Actually Scoring

A very odd glitch. I happen to take a shot from mid range and it
cleary bounced off the far post. Except, it was called a goal. So
I consulted the video replay, indeed I was right. It's only
happened once in several thousand goals I've seen though.

Oversight #32 Weird Puck Bouncing

Ever noticed the way the puck sometimes rolls out of the net? It
makes a U-turn around the post! Some sort of magical puck is the
        only explanation.

                                  9. Camera Angles

Angle #1 Ice

The default camera angle. I recommend this one because it allows a
large spectrum of view. It has it's disadvantages though. For one,
I can't stand going down the screen at the goalie.

Angle #2 Scoreboard

A horrible piece of crap camera angle. No advantages whatsoever.
If you want to score goals, look elsewhere. I wholeheartedly hate
this camera angle. Crazy at centre ice.

Angle #3 Chase

This camera is quite a camera angle. It's the one you see in the
video at the beginning of the game (not the one by Garbage).
Anyways, this camera sucks. You can't see opponents coming at all.
Just like Scoreboard, it sucks at centre ice.

Angle #4 Classic

Not half bad, this one is. It's like the Ice angle, but it adjusts a
lot more. It is diseased just like Scoreboard and Chase with a crap
        centre ice switch.

Angle #5 Press

This one's a pretty good side view camera angle. It is however, a
lot confusing if you're used to Ice, probably vice versa too. It's
opposite directions which confuses the hell out of you. But, it's
good for one-timing because you can see a good chunk of the ice.

Angle #6 Broadcast

This is a rather low angled Press view. If you liked Press, you'll
dispise this one. It takes all the good things out of Press. It
makes breakaways quite impossible, so I say it's fit for a landfill.

Angle #8 Overhead 1

First impressions are not bad. Like the name it's overhead. Way
overhead. It makes breakaways difficult, but not impossible.

Angle #9 Overhead 2

Wow. This one's between Ice and Overhead 1. You get the best of both
worlds. No crap at centre either. This is my #2 camera angle.
