Please do not reproduce this for profit without my consent. A specific
inquiry to me using my first name is almost always accepted. Failure to
do this will result in a simple no or possibly my ignoring you
completely. This document is part of my contribution to the effort to
remember old Apple games, and maybe someone will see this and be
encouraged to write their own.

I guess this game struck me in a queer sort of way and I never really
was able to put it out of my mind. Of course it's an obvious Pac-Man
ripoff, but for some reason I enjoyed it more than the more
sophisticated efforts. My latest rule of thumb is, when in doubt,
write, so I did.

  BASIC RULES

You control a guppy guzzling gumdrops while avoiding mean
ghosties(except after eating a power-up.) There is a non-frightening
pumpkin you can eat in the center through three different mazes, each of
which has doors you can go through but ghosts can't. Your controls are
as follows:

      Up
      W
Left J K Right
      S
     Down

Anything else will give a shockingly unfriendly squelch with "wrong" at
the top of the screen.

Pushing a higher number to start the game will make it go faster. Any
other key works the same as pressing 1.

  CONSTANTS

The game cycles every three boards, with gameplay getting faster.
Extra men at 1000, 2000 and 4000. I don't know when the next is.
The green ghost is always on top of the "bullpen" on start or restart of
the level. The red, orange and blue are below him from left to right.
The wave ends when you have eaten all gumdrops. If power pills are left
over, too bad. You don't get the points for them, and you don't get to
chase the ghosts either.
You make extra noise if you chomp a ghost as it's just outside the pen.
If you eat one power pill and another before the first wears off, the
doubling bonus still holds, up to 80(i.e. your fifth ghost is worth 80.)

  THE MAZES (WITH LEDGER)

R = red gumdrop, worth two points
G = green gumdrop, worth one point
P = power-up square, worth five points.  You get 10, 20, 40, 80 points
for each monster you chomp while your guppy has fangs. The sound gets
staggered near the end, and your guppy switches between normal and
fangs.
* = where the pumpkin is.
! = where you start. On level 1 you start where the pumpkin is.
& = doors only you can enter. They are green.
~ = doors only monsters can enter. They are red.

Walls are orange. Holes in the side are like tunnels in Pac-Man.

Note that these maps are not drawn to scale. They are drawn so that you
can see the locations of the gumdrops.

  A FEW BRIEF HINTS

--Turning corners is very awkward. If a monster is just behind you,
you're toast.
--The only way to stop your snacker is to run into a wall. Otherwise
you'll be hitting back and forth a lot to stay in position.
--Note that there is a safe space on level 1, a safe space if you hit
left/right a lot on level 2, and no safe space on level 3.
--On level 1, go wide first and clear out above and below the bullpen
after eating a power-up. You'll also want to use the upper left and
upper right power-ups to clear out the upper left and upper right sides,
respectively.
--On level 2, the tunnel from one side to the other is very useful and
is the only scrolling part of the game.
--On level 3, get a good head start when you go to eat power-ups right
next to red doors. The computer seems to give the ghosts home-field
advantage. Also, the top row is the very toughest to clear and it may
be worth wasting the power pill near the top just to clear that out.
--Remember that the green ghost starts off in the direction that his
eyes point.
--The ghosts seem to move pretty randomly, but they occasionally draw a
bead on you. They also don't flee very effectively after you've eaten a
power pill.
--The pumpkin seems to appear at regular intervals, meaning your score
at any one level is potentially limitless.
--Watch out--you may seem to eat a ghost as time runs out, but it still
can kill you, and you won't get the points for it.
