                              [i.i] Introduction

You may remember back when the Saturn was released, Sega was offering three
free games with the purchase of the Saturn, one being this one (along with
Daytona USA and Virtua Fighter 2.) Anyway, the game is essentially a
first-person shooter only it's automated, meaning the camera pans around each
area automatically while you shoot up the bad guys. Compared to modern games,
I'd say this is quite similar to House of the Dead 2.

===============================================================================

[1.1] What type of game is Virtua Cop?

It's official genre is Action. Basically, the player (you) is positioned
directly behind the barrel of the weapon and has crosshairs in front of them.
The camera then automatically pans around each area, homing in on each enemy,
giving the player a chance to shoot them. Add this main concept along with
hostages, several weapons, bosses and items and that's Virtua Cop in a nutshell.

[1.2] What system(s) is Virtua Cop playable on?

Virtua Cop was first released in the Arcade then was ported to the Sega
Saturn shortly after. In the Arcade, you use the Light Gun, for enhanced
playing experience, but on the Saturn, you have the option of playing with
either your Saturn controller or the Light Gun (sold separately.) Playing with
the Light Gun is recommended, as it makes the game much more enjoyable.

[1.3] When was Virtua Cop made and who made it?

I'm uncertain as to the release date of the Arcade version of Virtua Cop,
but I do know that the game was first released in Japan on the Saturn in
November of 1995. It was released in the United States shortly after and was
offered in a free, 3-game package when you purchased a Saturn. All versions of
Virtua Cop were developed and published by Sega of Japan and Sega of America.

[1.4] Are there any other games similar to Virtua Cop?

There are too many to list. Some of the ones I'm familiar with: Virtua Cop
2, House of the Dead, House of the Dead 2. Of course, there are several more
on all different systems but I haven't heard of, let alone played any of them.
Fans of Virtua Cop may also enjoy FPS games (First-Person Shooter) such as
Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, DOOM, Duke Nukem, etc. Virtua Cop 2 is available on
the Saturn, Dreamcast and Arcade.

[1.5] What is the training mode?

You can access the training mode from the title screen by selecting it from
the list of options. The training mode is basically in a room with several
shelves placed out with dummy cards (resembling humans) popping up randomly for
you to shoot at. Black dummy cards are to be shot at; red are not. You'll
have a limited time in this mode of play, so be quick and be accurate. You're
judged on the number of hits you get and how accurate you were. The higher you
receive in both of these categories, the higher your score. You can also
access the VS mode from the training option, but I can't recall how it all
works, as it's been a while since I last played in VS mode.

[1.6] What's the difference between the 3 stages?

There are a total of three stages (non-training and non-vs) in Virtua
Cop. The first is entitled "Black Arms Market" and takes place mainly outdoors
around several structures. This stage is considered the "Beginner" stage, as
it isn't as difficult as the two which follow it. The boss of this stage is
known as Kong. All boss strategies can be found in section 1.15.
Stage 2 is entitled "Underground Weapon Storage" and has a rugged outdoor
environment, somewhat desert-like and heavily under construction. It is
considered the "Medium" stage, as it's difficulty level is higher than Stage 1,
but less than Stage 3. The boss of this stage is known as King.
The final stage is entitled "Gang Headquarters" and takes place indoors, in
the gang's headquarters (hence the title.) It is considered the "Expert"
level, as it contains several gangsters and the overall difficulty of it is
higher than the preceeding two. The boss of this stage is known as Boss.
If you play the stages in certain orders, you may or may not receive
different game endings and/or have the opportunity to fight the final
helicopter boss known as Fang. I've yet to determine this stage sequence, thus
I am unable to list it here, but if you think you've figured it out, by all
means let me know.

[1.7] What are the game options and how to I change them?

To change all options, select the "Options" option from the main menu when
you first start up your game. Scroll through this menu and make your changes
to the following options accordingly. When finished, exit back to the main
menu and start a new game with the new options you selected.

Difficulty

Easy - Select this difficulty level if you're a new player to the game.
Gangsters will be relatively easy to kill, and the overall play of
the game won't be excessively difficult.

Normal - This is the setting most players will set, as it makes the game not
too easy nor too hard to complete. After playing once on easy mode,
it would be a good idea to move on to this setting.

Hard - After completing the game on normal mode enough times, you'll be in
for a challenge - which is what this mode is for.

Gun Looseness

The gun looseness alters how fast or slow you move your crosshairs across
the screen. You can select from a range of 0-29, 0 being the most loose
(fast) and 29 being the most tight (slow.) This is another variation of
difficulty, as the looseness of your gun can decide whether you pass or fail
in each stage. It's best to leave it at the default (9) when starting out,
but if that doesn't suit you well, you can always alter it for comfort and/or
  challenge.

Life

Here, you can decide how many life points you want to start out with.
Once again, this mainly alters the difficulty level of the game, as you can
either set a low amount for high difficulty or a high amount for low
difficulty. The maximum amount of life points you can have is 9, while the
  minimum is 1.

Continue

After all of your life points are gone, you'll get a "Continue?" screen,
where you have a limited time to decide whether or not you wish to continue.
Once all of your continues are gone, you get game over. For skilled players,
you have the option of selecting "NO CREDIT" which means you'll have no
continues. It's best to leave it at default if you want an average
difficulty level, but feel free to alter it to your liking.

Sight

The sight is the yellow circle that shows up when gangsters appear, which
shows you where you're aiming your gun. It's best to leave the sight on,
otherwise you'll have to fire blindly at your enemy to hit him. Turning the
sight off is primarily for skilled players only.

Audio

Not much gameplay altering with this option. You can either select
stereo (both speakers) or monaural (one speaker) for the sound. Set this
accordingly to the features of your television.

Sound Test

   1 - Sega Logo 2 - Name Entry
   3 - Game Over 4 - Stage Clear
   5 - Ending 6 - Theme of Boss
7 - Theme of Fang 8 - Theme of King
   9 - Theme of Kong 10 - BGM Stage 3
  11 - BGM Stage 2 12 - BGM Stage 1
  13 - Stage Select 14 - Opening
  15 - Advertise

Gun Adjust

If you have a Light Gun for your Sega Saturn, you can alter the settings
for it in this menu. Considering I don't have a Light Gun, I can't really
describe what this menu contains, as you cannot select it unless the Light
Gun is in the controller port.

Key Assign

You have three possible buttons to set on your controller. One for
shooting your weapon, one for reloading your weapon, and one for speeding up
gameplay during each level. Set the controls to what's most comfortable for
you. You can also set the controls on player 2's controller if you have a
  second controller plugged in.

[1.8] What are the different sight colors?

As you approach gansters in each stage, a yellow sight appears on the
screen, hones in on the gangster and locks in place, allowing you to accurately
fire at your enemy. There are three different colors of this sight, each with
its own meaning. If you stay on the main screen without pressing start, a
tutorial will appear after a few seconds, teaching you all about these lock-on
sights. The different colors are as follows:

        Sight Color: Meaning:

Yellow Gangster is near. Shoot at him before the sight
                        turns red in color.

Red Gangster is just about ready to pull the trigger
on his weapon. Shoot at him immediately when
you see a red sight, otherwise you'll get hit.

Green Gangster has been shot. Continue shooting to
                        multiply your score.

[1.9] What are all the displays on the game screen?

Most of the displays are self-explanatory, but others need some
justification. In the upper-left hand corner of the screen is a yellow/black
bar. This is your score bar. Whenever you shoot a gangster, the bar will
increase and fill with yellow. Once this bar is completely filled, your score
will be muliplied by one. Under the score bar is where you can find your total
score mulipliers along with messages for accurate shooting.
On the bottom-left of the screen, you'll find your remaining life points.
If you have more than 5 life points (approximation) one life point icon will
appear with a number after it. This number represents your total life
points. Once you get below 5 life points, all of them will appear as a
separate icon.
Just above your life point meter is your weapon ammunition meter. If you
have the default revolver equipped, you'll be able to see how many rounds you
have left before you need to reload. If you have an alternate weapon equipped,
a vertical bar will appear to show how much ammunition you have left.
On the right side of the screen you have the exact same layout of displays,
only for Player #2. If you are playing solo, a message will appear on the right
side of the screen prompting player #2 to press start if he or she wishes to
play a VS game with player #1. In the Arcade, player 2 must insert the proper
amount of coins followed by pressing start.

[1.10] Who are those guys in white suits that say "Help me!"?

These are civilians. You can distinguish them apart from the gangsters by
their white suits and the manner in which they throw their arms into the air
and scream out the words "Help me!" If you accidentally shoot a civilian, you
will lose one of your life points. There are also other types of civilians
(hostages, actually) in the later stages of the game, but the majority of them
are men in white suits. You should have no trouble finding hostages, as they
are quite easily noticeable.

[1.11] What exactly can/can't I shoot at while playing?

What you CAN shoot at:

Gangsters - Some in suits, most in normal street clothing. You can
make out a gangster from a hostage, as gangsters are always
armed with some sort of weapon.

Barrels - Red barrels will explode when shot at, green will not. When
red barrels explode, they'll send out a shockwave, destroying
                  anything in its path.

Crates - Very few crates will break open when shot at. In fact, I
can only think of a few which contain hiding gangsters and
alternate weapons. All other crates will not break when
                  shot at.

Windows - Any type of window or item made of glass can be shot at.
Car windows, construction machinery and computer monitors
will all break when shot at.

Axes - If a gangster gets up in your face, shoot its axe to defeat
him. Be quick, though, or you'll take damage and the
                  gangster will escape.

Grenades - Shoot grenades as they soar through the air to make them
explode in mid-air. Gangsters in brown clothing will usually
be throwing these from a confined area.

What you CAN'T shoot at:

Civilians - These guys are in white suits and yell out "Help me!" You'll
find several civilians in each stage, and if you shoot at
one, you'll lose a life point.

Hostages - People being held hostage by gangsters in Stage 3. They are
dressed in normal clothing but are unarmed and usually
                  tremble with fear.

[1.12] How many weapons are in the game?

Weapon Type: Rarity: Shots: Keep: Description:
   --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Revolver (Default) 0% 06 YES Default weapon; fires

                                                      must be reloaded after
                                                      every 6 shots. You
                                                      cannot lose this
                                                      weapon, as it is your
                                                      default firearm.

Rifle 60% 24 NO The rifle isn't very

                                                      but quite useful once
                                                      you get it. It fires
                                                      in 3-shot-bursts but
                                                      once you're out of
                                                      ammunition, the rifle
                                                      is gone for good.

Machine Gun 50% 30 NO The machine gun is
                                                      similar to the rifle,
                                                      but fires continuously
                                                      rather than in 3-shot
                                                      bursts. Once you've
                                                      fired all 30 rounds,
                                                      the weapon is gone.

Automatic 40% 15 YES Similar to the machine
                                                      gun, the automatic
                                                      fires in a continuous
                                                      spurt of fire but only
                                                      has 15 rounds. To
                                                      make up for this, you
                                                      can reload it as many
                                                      times as you wish, but
                                                      once all 15 have been
                                                      fired, it's gone.

Shotgun 85% 06 YES The shotgun is very
                                                      hard to come by, but
                                                      when you _do_ get it,
                                                      definitely keep it
                                                      active as long as
                                                      possible. Once all 6
                                                      rounds have been fired
                                                      the weapon is gone.

[1.13] How do I get a different weapon?

Most alternate weapons (by alternate I refer to any weapon aside from the
default revolver) are dropped by gangsters after you defeat them, otherwise you
can find them in hidden areas, crates, etc. To pick up an alternate weapon,
simply shoot at it. You'll be able to find a weapon because there is an icon
of it, along with an arrow pointing down underneath the weapon's name. Once
you have an alternate weapon, you'll lose it if:

a.) You are shot by a gangster or hit by an axe or grenade.
b.) All rounds are fired without reloading (for reloadable weapons.)
c.) All rounds are fired (for unreloadable weapons.)
d.) You shoot a civilian or hostage (losing a life point.)

[1.14] I'm getting a "RELOAD" message. How do I reload?

If you're using the standard Sega Saturn controller, press the button which
you set as your "Reload" button. If you don't remember what it was, try them
all until you get it right, then remember it for future use. If you're using
the Light Gun, aim it off screen and press the trigger. If you're playing in
the arcade, the method is the same: move the Light Gun off screen and press the
tirgger to reload.

[1.15] Who are the bosses and how do I beat them?

Stage 1 (Beginner, Arms Black Market) Boss - Kong:

At the end of Stage 1, you'll have to fight the gangster boss known as
Kong. He's equipped with a large rocket launcher (or bazooka, if you will)
along with a concealed handgun. Destroy the rockets he fires at you by
shooting each one before they reach you, then quickly shoot at Kong before he
has a chance to fire another round. Continue this until he drops his rocket
launcher and surrenders. However, he'll quickly pull a fast one on you and
take out a handgun. Quickly shoot him once to finish him off.

Stage 2 (Medium, Underground Weapon Storage) Boss - King:

King will use a flamethrower to attack you. Shoot the flames that are
projected toward you then shoot the boss quickly after before he starts with
the flames again. During this battle, King will rest a few times, at which
time you must defeat gangsters down on the ground, including gangsters who
are throwing grenades at you. Continue firing at King in the same manner
  listed above to defeat him.

Stage 3 (Expert, Gang Headquarters) Boss - Boss/Fang:

Depending on the order in which you completed each stage, you may or may
not have the chance to fight Fang, the helicopter boss, but you will have to
defeat Boss (that's his name) who isn't all that tough. He has two weapons
mounted on each side of him, both of which you must first destroy. Take out
missiles when they're shot at you and then quickly fire at the weapon(s)
before they start their next round to destroy them. Once Boss' energy meter
reaches the end, he will be defeated. As for Fang, I've yet to face off
against him, so I have no strategy as of yet.

[1.16] Why are there numbers under my score bar?

This display shows your score multiplier. Once your score bar has been
completely filled, the score multiplier increases by one. To score points, you
simply need to hit gangsters. Hitting gangsters multiple times after the first
shot will gain you more points, thus increasing your yellow score bar. If you
get shot by a gangster or shoot a civilian/hostage, your score bar
automatically empties and your multiplied score decreases by two. The higher
your score is multiplied, the higher your final score will be after each scene.
This is a good way to get top scores, so try and hit gangsters multiple times
instead of just once.

[1.17] What are those floating cards with hearts on them for?

These are life points and are very hard to come by. You can set how many
life points you want from the options menu, but if you're running low, shoot
this card and you'll gain 1 extra life point. These life points can be found
either in destroyable crates or after you defeat certain gangsters.

[1.18] Why don't you have a walkthrough for the game?

This type of game does not require a walkthrough, as everything is
automated. However, if you are looking for a walkthrough to find certain
items, weapons, check out RChen's FAQ for the game located at gamefaqs.com.
It contains a very bare-boned walkthrough for all 3 stages of the game, but
it's quite sufficient if you're looking for the above. If you happen to get
stuck in this game (not knowing where to go next; not on a certain gangster or
boss) and find yourself unable to proceed, I reccommend you get your head
examined. :)

[1.19] Do you have a review of this game?

Yes, actually, I do. You can find it at the following URL:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/saturn/review/R5021.html </Shameless-Plug>
Seriously, though. If you're debating on whether to get this game, just get
it. It's not like you'll be losing tons of money, plus the game is quite good.

[1.20] I have a question not in your guide. What should I do?

Send it to me, of course. You can find my contact information near the end
of the guide. If you have a legitimate question that I am capable of providing
an answer to, I'll post it in the guide along with the answer. If I am unable
to answer the question, I shall start a new section with unanswerable questions
for readers to answer.

                             [2.1] Secrets and Codes

Access Cheat Mode

At the Sega logo, hold down C and press the following while still
holding down the C button: Up, Down, Left, Right. If done correctly, you'll
hear a gunshot as confirmation. Now, at the AM2 logo, hold down the C button
again and press the following: Down, Up, Right, Left, Up, Up, Left, Right.
Once again, a gunshot confirms you've done it correctly. You must be fast,
however, or you'll fail and be forced to do it all over.

Weapon Select

You must have the cheat mode enabled for this to work. Once it's
enabled, start a game and pause at any time. If you have the Light Gun
equipped, shoot off-screen while the game is still paused to bring up the
weapon select menu. If you have a normal Saturn controller, press the C
button on the pause screen to bring it up.

Game Ending

Start a new game, and once you kill all the enemies in all of the scenes
of stage one, press the following buttons simultaneously before the stage 1
boss battle starts: B + X + Z. Hold all three of these buttons while you
fight the boss and if done correctly, you'll see the game's ending after you
  defeat the boss.
