I. INTRODUCTION

Hah. Before we start, bear in mind that this is likely to be the worst 
FAQ ever written, mainly cause I've never written an FAQ in my life. 
This is an FAQ for the battling part of Pokemon Crystal. Only the 
hardcore players need read this, really, or those interested in hardcore 
battling. This WILL NOT help you with the RPG section of the game. This 
will help with the battling part. Clear enough? Why am I doing a guide 
like this? 

1) I didn't do a guide for Pokemon Gold/Silver. By the time it came out 
here in the UK, most of the guides had covered everything. So I gave up 
on the idea.

2) It's the halfterm holidays, and I need something to do other than 
GSBot, GBA, and DBZ. =/ 

3) Battling is one of the most interesting parts of Pokemon Crystal, 
once you actually get accommodated with the game. Tournaments like the 
Celebi Tour, etc. all deal with battling. As I said, if you're looking 
for a Walkthrough for PokeCrystal, check Donald's. His is one of the 
best, IMO. 

4) I was inspired by some good writers to start a guide. Tekken 3 guides 
from Slikatel, BCureton, Catlord... or FF7 guide from KMegura etc. Dingo 
Jellybean and Nemesis also inspired me quite a lot. 

Expect to see many mistakes. Many. Please correct me at the email

V. Getting Started: The Basic Rules Of Battling

Rawr. Now we're talking. This explains the basic physics of pokemon 
battling in the Game Boy Colour/Advance. 


There are four types of battles: Wild, Trainer, Boss, and Link Cable. 
Wild battles occur when you stroll around in tall grass, and suddenly 
some music starts and you go into the battle screen. Kinda like random 
encounters in the Final Fantasy Games. Trainer Types of Battles are when 
you're walking along, and suddenly an exclaimation mark appears on a 
person nearby's head. Then they come up to you, say something silly, and 
you are plunged into the battle screen. The third type, Boss, is when 
you're fighting a Gym Leader or a member of the elite four, or Ash. You 
walk up to them, speak to them by tapping A, and they say some arrogant 
stuff and you go into the battle screen. Link battles are against 
another person, joined together by a link cable. You can get link cables 
anywhere..... 

NOTE: All of these battles have the same type of physics.

The Battle Screen
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Yep, the battle screen. It is when you go into a battle, as it says 
above. You see yourself first, and the pokemon in the first slot of your 
team comes out. In trainer and gym battles, the enemy is shown first, 
and then they send out a pokemon. Whatever type of battle, you'll get 
the following options: 

FIGHT   RUN
PKMN    BAG

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
 FIGHT
 
 Booyaka. This option is your main option, basically to attack. 
Depending on what moves your pokemon has, when you press fight, the 
moves of your pokemon will come up. Choose any move, and the pokemon 
will use that move.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
RUN

  Only works in wild battles. Once again, similar to the Final Fantasy 
Series. If it's a wild pokemon, then you can run from them. Useful when 
you're sick and tired of battling. Don't try running from trainers, 
bosses, or link battles; it won't work.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
PKMN 

   This is to switch to another pokemon in your six pokemon team. You 
press Switch, and it shows all your pokemon. Press A on the new pokemon 
to bring it out. You'll find yourself switching a lot in hardcore 
battles against other players.

BAG

This is to use an item that you may have gotten. Potions, etc. This 
doesn't work in Link Battles, so beware. >=|

Okay, we have the commands up scratch. What happpens next?

The Start of the battle
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

This is what you'll see in a trainer, boss, or link battle.

ENEMY wants to battle!
ENEMY sent out [enemypokemon]!
Go [yourpokemon]!

Then you'll be prompted to use a command.

The commands

  Fight:

It goes something like this. (Boss, Trainer, and Link) Replace
[pokemon] with the pokemon used, and [move] with the move(s) used.

DARTHSIDIOUS's [pokemon] used [move]!
ENEMY'S [pokemon] used [move]!

Say you used Thunderbolt with a Jolteon, and your opponent is a Flareon, 
who uses Flamethrower.

DARTHSIDIOUS's Jolteon used THUNDERBOLT! 
ENEMY's Flareon used FLAMETHROWER!

Or something like that.

If status inflictions happen i.e Paralyzation then:

DARTHSIDIOUS's Jolteon used THUNDERBOLT! 
ENEMY's Flareon is paralyzed! It may not attack!
ENEMY's Flareon used FLAMETHROWER!

etc. I'll explain Status inflictions later on.


PKMN: This is to switch. This is what happens:

DARTHSIDIOUS withdrew [yourpokemon]
DARTHSIDIOUS sent out [newpokemon]!
ENEMY's [pokemon] used [move]!

Let's say we took out Jolteon, and sent out Gyarados. Then:

DARTHSIDIOUS withdrew Jolteon!
DARTHSIDIOUS sent out Gyarados!
ENEMY's Flareon used FLAMETHROWER!
It's not very effective....

The "It's not very effective..." part is to do with Type Effectiveness. 
More on that later.

BAG: This is to use an item. This DOES NOT work in Link battles. The 
action varies for the item. I'll do something for recover items like 
potions. When you press bag, you select an item, then, assuming it's a 
potion or something, you get a list of the pokemon to use it on. If it's 
something special like a pokeflute, then:

DARTHSIDIOUS played the POKEFLUTE!
All sleeping pokemon woke up!
ENEMY's [pokemon] used [move]!

etc.

Status Inflictions
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

This is a slightly complicated part of battling. Status Inflictions are 
certain statuses that get inflicted on the enemy pokemon. The status 
Inflictions are: PAR(Paralyzation), BRN(Burn), PSN(Poison), SLP(Sleep), 
and FRZ(Freeze). There are also attraction and confusion, which don't 
show up on the pokemon's status, simply cause they can be rid of by 
switching, while the aforementioned others cannot. Let's get started on 
the statuses then.

PAR(Paralyzation): This is, in my opinion, the most useful status 
infliction. It paralyzes the opponent, and there is a 25% chance each 
turn of being fully paralyzed. When fully paralyzed, you get a free 
turn. Something like this:

DARTHSIDIOUS's Jolteon used THUNDERBOLT! 
ENEMY's Flareon was paralyzed!

An FP(Full Paralyzation) is when the 25% chance goes your way.

DARTHSIDIOUS's Jolteon used Thunderbolt!
ENEMY's Flareon is fully paralyzed.

Also, paralyzation decreases your opponent's speed to 1/4, which will 
almost certainly make your pokemon go first. Blargh. =D Atttacks that 
can inflict paralyzation are: Thunder Wave(Always), Thunderbolt(10% 
chance) Thunder(30% chance), Spark(30% chance), Thundershock(10% 
chance), Body Slam(30% chance) Zap Cannon(Always), Tri Attack(6.6% 
Chance), Thunderpunch(10%). Email me if there are any more, and I'll add 
to the list. ^_^

BRN(Burn): A not so useful status which takes off 12% of the opponent's 
health every turn. However, it also decreases your oppoonent's attack by 
50%. Making it nice. =P

DARTHSIDIOUS's Ho-oh used SACRED FIRE!
ENEMY's Togepi was burnt!
ENEMY's Togepi used Return!
ENEMY's Togepi is hurt by the burn.


There you have it. Moves that can burn: Sacred Fire(50% chance), 
Flamethrower(10% chance), Fire Blast(10% chance), Ember(10% chance), and 
Tri attack(6.6% chance). Email me if there are any more. kthxbye!

PSN(Poison): Like burn, takes off 12% off your health every turn, with 
the exception of the move Toxic. Toxic is a slightly more potent poison 
move, which takes off 1/16th HP on the first turn, 1/8th HP on the 
second turn, 1/4th HP on the third turn, etc.

DARTHSIDIOUS's Muk used SLUDGE BOMB!
ENEMY's Togepi was poisoned! 
ENEMY's Togepi used Return!
ENEMY's Togepi is hurt by the Poison.

Or in Toxic's case:

DARTHSIDIOUS's Muk used TOXIC!
ENEMY's Togepi was badly poisoned! 
ENEMY's Togepi used Return!
ENEMY's Togepi is hurt by the Poison.

Slightly different. Note, however, that if you switch out of toxic, it 
turns into normal poison. Moves that can poison: Sludge Bomb(30%(Correct 
me if I'm wrong)), Toxic(Special), Sludge, Poisonpowder. Email me with 
corrections and more moves, if you want. This list isn't complete, I'm 
sure. Off to TPM to check... Stay tuned for updates! ^^

SLP(Sleep): This is also quite useful. It puts the opponent to sleep for 
a random amount of turns. During sleep, they cannot attack at all as 
long as they are asleep, with the exception of the moves Sleep talk and 
Snore. 

DARTHSIDIOUS's Venusaur used Sleep Powder!
ENEMY's Togepi went to sleep!
ENEMY's Togepi is fast asleep.

OR:

DARTHSIDIOUS's Venusaur used Sleep Powder!
But it failed!
ENEMY's Togepi used RETURN!
etc.

Sleep Talk selects a random move to use when they are asleep.

ENEMY's Togepi is fast asleep!
ENEMY's Togepi used SleepTalk!
ENEMY's Togepi used Return!
etc.

The move REST puts yourself to sleep for 2 turns, but recovers all 
health and status affects. Nice. ^_^ Moves that can inflict sleep: 
Loveley Kiss(75%), Sleep Powder(75%), Spore(99%), Rest(On yourself), 
Hypnosis(70%), and Sing. Email me if there are any more.

NOTE: The moves Dream Eater and Nightmare only work when the opponent is 
asleep.

FRZ(FreezE): The best status effect, but very hard to come by. This 
freezes the opponent, and when frozen, they cannot do anything at all. 
This is the best status effect, but as I said, very hard to come by 
unless you are extremely lucky.

ENEMY's Togepi was frozen solid!
ENEMY's Togepi is frozen solid.

Moves that can Freeze: Blizzard(10%), Ice Beam(10%), and Tri 
Atttack(6.6%), Ice Punch(10%). Email me if there are any more.....

Type Effectiveness

Type effectiveness is quite basic. If a move of a certain element is 
"super effective" against a move of another element, then the move does 
double damage. If it's "not very effective" then it does half damage. 
Below is a list of all the types that are effective and weak against 
what types. If they "don't affect" the other type, then the move doesn't 
work against other types.


NORMAL:

Not very effective against: Nothing
Based on ATTACK Stat.
DO NOT affect ghost types.
-Type- 
Resistant to: Nothing
Weak to: Fighting
Are not affected by ghost attacks.


FIGHTING:

Super effective against: Normal, Ice, Rock, Dark, Steel.
Not very effective against: Poison, Flying, Psychic, Bug.
DO NOT Affect Ghost types.
Based on the ATTACK Stat.

POISON:

Super Effective Against: Grass

VI. The GSBOT (Online Battling)

I was actually planning to bring this section later on, after the basic 
and Advanced Strategies. But I believe you need to know about the online 
simulator of Pokemon Battling first. (hereby known as GSBot) The GSBot 
is a rather complicated piece of script, used to simulate online 
battling. It is entirely text based. This section is only if you want to 
battle online. If you don't, don't bother.

How To Get GSBot
=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

1) Download mIRC from www.mIRC.com
2) Extract the files into a folder
3) Run mIRC.
4) You will see a picture of some man. Close that little window. You 
will then see another small window that opens, with the title "mIRC 
Options" 
5) Type in your name, email, and Name where it says.
6) Close the mIRC Options window.
7) You will see an empty window just like notepad in front of you.
8) In the thing at the bottom, where you can type, type: /server 
irc.mediadriven.com  (with the / and everything. Copy and paste if you 
must)
9) Press Enter. =/
10) You'll see a whole bunch of mumbo jumbo ignore it all. 
11) A window will pop up with the title "mIRC Channels folder" on it.
12) In the window where you can type, type: #battlezone.
13) Click on JOIN.
14) Here, you'll see the screen where everyone is battling.

If you got that far, you're pretty smart. *prepares to get hit by 
barrage of emails asking this and that* NOTE: this doesn't work if you 
have anything below the 18 level of Parental Controls in AOL. You won't 
be able to use GSBot like that. Tough. =D

Now open a web browser and in the URL bar, type:

That link should explain how to use it all. Ask someone for a practice 
battle. Also, if you want, type /join #pokegsc in the window to join my 
"channel". Channels are like #battlezone. They are basically.....chat 
rooms. =/ #battlezone is not a chat room, thanks to some script, but it 
looks like one. Anyway, #pokegsc is my channel. Go in there sometmes by 
typing /join #pokegsc wherever you want. Look for me under the screen 
name "Sidjus". =D

This section is all about basic strategies you should employ in 
battling. Where to start.....Ah, yes. You need a good team. A GOOD team. 
Not a team with Charmanders with Ember, or Pikachus with Thundershock. 
You need a fully evolved, great movesets team. If you're using the 
GSBot, then you get the pokemon that you want, at any level and any 
moves.

Making a Team

The basic format of a team would be something like: Starter/Special 
Attacker/Curser or Sweeper or Heal Beller/Hazer/Heal Beller or Perish 
Trapper/Physical Attacker.  Here, I'll explain them all in depth. This 
is assuming you want a normal, rather standard team.


STARTER

The starter. Once again, assuming you want a normal standard team, the 
lead pokemon should be an extremely fast pokemon, that can immediately 
start inflicting stat changes like paralysis on the enemy. I use a 
Jolteon with Thunderbolt, Thunder Wave, Attract, Substitute. This 
manages to keep the enemy pokemon paralyzed and infatuated, while 
beating them down with Thunderbolts. Alternatively, you could use a 
spiker. Spikers are, quite simply, pokemon with the moves spikes on 
them. The pokemon that cna learn spikes are Cloyster, Qwilfish, 
Forretress, and Smeargle. Spikes takes off 12% of the enemy every time 
they switch. 12% may seem a little, but it hella annoys the opponent, 
and can even be the difference between wins and losses. If they have low 
health pokemon that are faster than your pokemon, they might be able to 
bring them in, rest, and they have a fresh new pokemon. However, with 
spikes, any poke below 12% dies on a switch. Quite the life saver. I 
once beat 3 pokemon just because they got switched in and promptly died. 
Onto the next pokemon....

SPECIAL ATTACKER

The name says it all here. A special attacker should have mostly if not 
all special attacks, and perhaps a recovery move. The poke should have a 
high special attack stat as well. No special attacking Miltank allowed. 
>:| Rawr. I have Suicune and Jolteon as my special sweepers. Suicune 
also covers the hazer slot with Roar, which acts as haze. More on that 
later. In any case, Dragonite is a great special sweeper, that can learn 
many special attacks. A good Draggy set would be Fire Blast, 
Thunderbolt, Rest, IceBeam/Return. Return would take advantage of his 
attack stat, and the others would use his good special attack stat for 
00ber elemental coverage. Nice. 


CURSER OR HEAL BELLER

Cursers are basically pokemon that have curse. Curse, when used on a non 
ghost type, will raise your attack and defense stats each time, but 
decrease your speed stats. If you have a high special defense, and low 
speed then you have a perfect curser. Snorlax is THE best curser, IMO. 
Many people consider him cheap, since once cursed up, he sweeps entire 
teams. If you have a Hazer, then Cursers are easy to deal with. Anyway, 
I'd suggest using a Snorlax with: Curse, Return, Earthquake, Rest. Once 
cursed up, his attack stat will be 00ber high. Return and EQ both run 
off the attack stat, so there you have it. Earthquake is for pesky 
ghosts that get in the way of return. I use a sleep talking snorlax, 
which basically has sleep talk over Earthquake. So when I rest, I can 
still attack and/or curse up. Alternatively, you can use a Heal Beller 
in this spot. I use a blissey as my Heal Beller(Softboiled, Heal Bell, 
Light Screen, Ice Beam). Heal Bellers are necessary because if your 
whole team is paralyzed, then you can't undo the PAR, except by Heal 
Belling. VERY useful. Miltank and blissey are the best Heal Bellers, and 
so is Celebi if you don't mind using him. Granbull is too vulnerable to 
be a heal beller in my opinion. Also, there is a strategy called Bell 
resting which involves resting, then bringing in the heal beller to heal 
bell and make the sleeping/resting pokemon wake up. Anyway, onto..

HAZER

Yes, hazer. VERY necessary, since these days on GSBot curselaxen and 
other cursers and/or stat upping pokemon are being used. Bring out the 
hazer, and all their stat ups are gone. Roar and Whirlwind are also a 
form of hazing, since they make the opponent switch, therefore throwing 
all of it's stat uppers away. I use a Suicune with Roar, Surf, Mirror 
Coat, and Rest for this job. Hazers should last a match, which is why we 
have rest.



HEAL BELLER, PERISH TRAPPER, OR PHYSICAL ATTACKER

If you had curser in slot 3, go with Heal Beller in this slot. Read slot 
3 for heal Beller's explaination. Perish Trappers are pokemon that have 
Mean Look, and Perish Song. The purpose is to trap with Mean Look, then 
Perish sing. Usually, these pokemon have protect, so that they can 
protect until the perish count reaches one. Then we switch out to 
another pokemon, while the opponent dies of the perish song. I use 
misdreavus with Mean Look, Perish Song, Protect, and Rest for this one. 
Physical attackers are pokemon with moves that are based on the attack 
stat. Pokemon that have HIGH attack stats like Rhydon, Golem, etc are 
good Physical sweepers. I have my physical sweeper in slot 6, which 
is....


PHYSICAL ATTACKER OR MISCELLANEOUS POKEMON

My physical attacker is MAchamp with cross Chop, Rock Slide, earthquake, 
and Rest. He covers Fighting, Rock, and Ground types and is therefore 
very important. Read slot 5 for more info on physical attackers. 
Miscellaneous is basically....a favorite pokemon or some pokemon you 
really like to use. It's up to you who to choose.

That's the team section in a nutshell. There are many types of team, 
like TSS, BPing chain teams, and more. TSS stands for Toxic SandStorm 
Spikes. They lay down spikes, and put a sandstorm up while poisoning al 
the opponent's pokemon. They'll be switching like crazy to get rid of 
everything, and they still die. These teams usually consist of steel 
pokemon, since steel pokemon are immune to sandstorm. Combine with 
Protect for the best results. BPing teams are teams with Baton Pass. 
They usually have Scizor or something to Swords Dance, Agility, etc and 
Pass to a pokemon, who, with the stat uppers, can sweep whole teams. The 
problem with this team is that a Hazer screws up all your hard work in a 
few seconds.

Basic and Advanced Battling Strategies

Eh. So we have our perfect team. What next? Using it. Here are some tips 
of mine to use in battles. Bear in mind that you need to use your head 
to win battles, not just these tips. These may give you a hand, but in 
the end, it's you and experience that count. Slowly, you'll get better 
and more experienced, and get an idea of what battling is really all 
about..

1) Predict all kinds of things. Predict. PREDICT. PREDICT!!!! Rawr. 
Predict what your opponent will do. If you have a Suicune out, and they 
have a jolteon, they'll obviously thunderbolt cause electric is super 
effective on water. What do you do? Switch to a type that is resistant 
to electric attacks. If you hve a ground type like Marowak on your team, 
switch to it. The Thunderbolt will hit Marowak instead and do no damage 
at all. Depending on who you battle, you'll have to predict more and 
more, to the point where you're predicting predictions. For example, 
take a scenario where a Forretress(Steel/Bug) is out against a 
Houndoom(Fire/Dark). Forretress is excessively weak to fire attacks, so 
the opponent might think that no one in their right mind would leave 
Forretress out. So they go for a prediction, and use the free turn taken 
in switching to use Sunny Day, while you can predict a prediction and 
keep Forretress in to lay the spikes. This is only really used at 
extremely high levels of GSBot battling i.e Tournaments and stuff. Stay 
with basic predictions, then go for bigger ones depending on your 
opponent. Which brings me to...

2) Know your opponent. This will be difficult at first, but later when 
you get more experienced, you will know who is good and who isn't. Then 
bring your prediction level up or down depending on your opponent. For 
example if you're playing a really high level opponent, then predict 
predictions etc. On the other hand, you don't even need to bother if 
you're playing someone at a low level. Prejudice sucks, but hey, this is 
Pokemon. =/

3) This is obvious, but I must state it: THINK BEFORE YOU MOVE. Don't go 
rushing into things. You need the foresight of a chess player and the 
cunning of a fox to win against higher level players. Concentrate.

Okay, this is the section where you can analyze some of the battles that 
I or other players have done with higher level players. This is also a 
section where we will study extremely advanced player's battles. The 
GSBot way of speaking is different from in game, but it's easy enough to 
read. And we're off with two extremely good battlers, out of which one I 
consider to be the best in GS that I know. Yes, better than Ian Garvey.

Mirror coat returns double the damage as long as the attack is a special 
attack. Nin is smart enough not to Thunderbolt, since a Mirror Coat

check for Mirror Coat. A classic case of knowing your opponent.

Also known as Haxor Speak. This is a language sorta thing that replaces 
letters with numbers. L1k3 7h15. For example, 1 instead of l and 5 
instead of S and 3 instead of E. And so on.

Metagame
--------------
The type of gameplay played around your area. For example, the GSBot 
metagame may include Miltank. This may or may not be defined in team 
rates. For example, here's my idea of the GSBot Metagame. 

GSBOT METAGAME
Overused: Miltank, Zapdos
Common: Skarmory, Suicune
Standard Rules: No 1HKOs(Horn Drill, Fissure, Guillotine) No Super 
Legendaries(Mewtwo, Mew, Lugia, Celebi, Ho-oh), Sleep Clause(No more 
than one pokemon may be asleep at one time(Exception: Rest)), Species 
Clause(You can't hav two of the same pokemon)
Notes: Many people there are quite unfriendly, and complain heavily 
about luck. Don't go in asking "hi ppl plz can u tell me what is a 
gsbot" because they'll only flame you and ask you to press Alt + F4. 
Always include a Heal Beller in your team, as status changes are quite 
common. 

That's the GSBot Metagame as I see it, feel free to correct me. Overused 
is pokemon that are used a lot, and are seen a lot. Common are pokemon 
that you'll usually see, but are slightly less common than overused. 
Standard rules are the rules that are used in the area. For example, 
some people might play with species clause, some might not. Some might 
no holds barred. It's all up to you. Feel free to include a metagame 
with your rates, it'll make my life a lot easier while rating. Notes are 
just miscellaneous bits of useful info.

OHKO / 1HKO
--------------
The moves Horn Drill, Fissure and Guillotine are 1HKOs(normally referred 
to as OHKOs). That is because they, if they hit, KO your pokemon, no 
matter what health he has. People consider this quite cheap, because it 
takes no skill to use.

CH
-------------
CH means Critical Hit. I'm sure you know what Critical Hits are. They 
have a 6% chance of happening, and when they do, double the power of the 
move used.

Standard
-------------
A standard is the most common, widely accepted, moveset for a certain 
pokemon. For example, the standard Miltank is 
BodySlam/MilkDrink/HealBell/Earthquake. This is the most widely used 
moveset for Miltank, and usually the most effective. You'll find this 
used quite frequently at message boards.

Pseudo-Passing
---------------
Pseudo passing is passing the effect of one move to another pokemon by 
means of other than baton pass. Moves that pseudo pass are Safeguard, 
Reflect, and Light Screen. For example, if I had Espeon out and used 
Reflect, and then switched to another pokemon, the effect of Reflect 
would be passed to that pokemon until it wears out. Not too complicated, 
I hope.

FP

FP = Full Paralyzation/Fully Paralysed. For example, "Gah, FP right when 
he needed it.", would mean "Gah, fully paralyzed at the most convenient 
moment for the enemy." Or something. :P

Cheap
------------
This would be obvious, but I felt I had to include it, cause it is used 
so much. Cheap would be defined in the Pokemon Community as taking no 
skill to use, or something like that. Therefore, "OHKOs are cheap." 
would mean that OHKOs take no skill to use, and are no fun.

Or something.

STAB

STAB = Same Type Attack Bonus. When a pokemon uses an attack of the same 
element as itself, it gets a 50% extra damage bonus. For example:

Thunderbolt on a Tyranitar = 95 base power. T-Tar is not an electric 
type.

Thunderbolt on a Jolteon = (95 * 1.5) base power. Jolteon IS an electric 
type, therefore it gets the bonus.
