1.1 - About this FAQ
-------------------------------

This FAQ was started in late 1999, but hasn't actually been heavily
worked on until June 2000, and, didn't see release until June 22nd.
By the time this FAQ is complete, the game is old, and obsolete,
but, I don't care. I wanted to do this, it took me a while, but, I
did it!

Any corrections, submissions, questions, comments, and marraige
proposals may be sent to me, Jp, at jp7010@yahoo.com .

The following sites host this FAQ:

- www.GameFAQs.com (The latest version will be here)

You will also probably find this FAQ at my website, when I get
around to making it.

Oh, and this FAQ is copyright (C) John Pirrone, 2000.
Distribution of this FAQ for profit is illegal, and, stupid..
You may post this FAQ on your website, but, you must give me proper
credit, and, I would appreciate a message of notification if you do.

Note: Much of this FAQ is taken directly from the instruction manual.
That will change with time, but, for now...

-------------------------------
1.2 - About Rippin' Riders
-------------------------------

Rippin' Riders is made by UEP Systems. UEP also made Cool Boarders
1, and 2, Cool Boarders for the portable systems, and Thrasher: Skate
and Destroy. I think they also played a part in Cool Boarders 3, and 4..
but, I'm not sure, I think 989 took over the rights for those two.

Rippin' Riders Snowboarding was known as Cool Boarders Burrrn in
Japan, but, Sony owns the rights to the 'Cool Boarders' name here
in America, so, they had to change the name.
Yeah, we got real lucky with that name change...
(Anyone know what this game is called in Europe, and Austrailia?)
(...Has this game even been released in Austrailia?)

This game was published by Sega, as Dreamcast's first snowboarding
game. And Dreamcast's only one until fall 2000 when Boarder Zone
will be released.

This game is supported by Saloman, and Bonfire. Two major snowboard
brands. What it means to have them support this game, means an endless
supply of shameless advertisements, and, Jimmy, who is a shamless
advertisement himself...

This game only costs $20 at Electronics Boutique stores(EBWorld.com),
what're you waiting for? $20 is NOTHING! Go buy this game!

Anyways, the games features(from the back of the game's case);

-3 Games Modes available: Free Ride, Super
Pipe, & Match Race for two players

-Full collection of tricks & moves

-Seven main characters, with unique styles and
      varying degrees of snowboarding skills

-Silky smooth graphics at 60 frames per second

Oh, and this game was rated E for Everyone by the ESRB.

-------------------------------
1.3 - Version History
-------------------------------

  0.6 - 6/25/2000
    - I updated the Courses section. Now there's lots of info, on all
    the courses.
    - Added a "Top Scores" section... I have no idea what I hope to
accomplish with this, I may remove it in a later version.
    - This FAQ has exceeded Notepad! When I try to open it in Notepad,
it gives me an error! it's THAT big now!
    - Oh, sorry about all those unreleased updates, just, they were all
too minor to realease, and, there were so many of them... read through
'em if you wanna see every little change that's happened.
    - The requests labeled in the .5 update still stand, I want to try
to get rid of the Still Unknown's, but, help needed...

  0.5.7 - Unreleased - 6/25/2000
    - Some minor typos, and the sort...
    - Added Colby to special thanks, cause i forgot to yesterday.
    - Another inspiration from Caliban/Blitzkrieg's Tony Hawk FAQ...
now the columns in controls and tricks are lined up by spaced '-'s.

  0.5.6 - Unreleased - 6/24/2000
    - Well, me and my friend, Colby, went to go get our pictures taken
with the WWF's Lita. We came back to my house, and, I let him play
Rippin' Riders for the first time in his life. This guy is sick
at all video games, he pulls off a Misty 180, and Misty 720, out
of nowhere, so, now we have point values for those. The system
for Misty grading is weird, I'm gonna just leave the point values
    down there.
    - Now hosted by www.GamingPlanet.com . This FAQ is getting more
    popular by the day!

  0.5.5 - Unreleased - 6/23/2000
    - Again, some layout changes;
    - Got rid of the ".."s lining up the columns in the controls and
tricks section.. It may be a bit less orderly, but, it's a lot
    less cluttered overall.
    - Replaced percentages with '>'s.. got the idea from a Tony Hawk
FAQ... I hope that the idea of using >'s instead of percents isn't
copyrighted.. i don't see why it would be.... is it???

  0.5.1 - Unreleased - 6/22/2000
    - Minor layout changes, I really should proofread these things.
    - This FAQ now hosted by GameAdvice.com and GamesDomain.co.uk!

  0.5 - FIRST RELEASE - 6/22/2000
    - First release, more than i had thought would be out, yay!
    - Thanks to lini, for letting me use some of the stuff from his
    FAQ in this one.
    A couple requests:
      - The ASCII at the top is pretty bad, anyone wanna help me make
    a new one?
      - I need help with how mistys, manuals, and finishes are graded.
      - I don't know much, if anything, about Jimmy, and his boards,
    any help?
      - I need help with how the grading system in the super pipes work,
    any help?

2. M O D E S O F P L A Y
======================================================================

-------------------------------
2.1 - Free Ride
-------------------------------
These sloped courses feature a variety of obstacles and numerous
checkpoints, where extra time can be earned by performing tricks.
Make sure your boarder makes it to the goal within the allotted time,
or you're a loser!

-------------------------------
2.2 - Super Pipe
-------------------------------
Bust multiple tricks and catch tons of air in this gnarly halfpipe
mode. Make sure your boarder makes it to the finish line at the end
of the course within the allotted time and then watch as the total
performance results are displayed. In addition to the points acquired
along the way, the overall evaluation also includes the content and
the form of the tricks performed.

-------------------------------
2.3 - Match Race
-------------------------------

-----------------
2.3.1 - Battle
-----------------
Compete against your favorite rival using this novel racing mode
where trick expertise is key. By busting tricks you can earn attacking
power or extra thrust, both of which can have more effect on the race
outcome than mere speed.

----
2.3.1.1 - Line Versus
----
A completely new and unique aspect to this mode is the ability to
win a match by using the split-screen to your advantage. Execute
tricks toeffect a "line attack" which will move the dividing line of
the split screen, shrinking your opponents screen, making their race
much harder. If done enough times, you can even shut them completely
out, and win.

----
2.3.1.2 - Trick Boost
----
In this battle mode, use the Guard Button to give your boarder a
jet-boost that will propel them at super high velocity. However,
activating the speed boost requires "boost power points" which can
only be received by earning trick points at the trick areas.

-----------------
2.3.2 - free race
-----------------
This mode is for those who prefer a pure and unadulterated race.
Select whether you want to compete in time, trick, or total.
You can even set a handicap, setting the handicap will give the
lagging boarder a bit of extra speed.

you wish the border to rotate. Once you release the Jump Button, the
boarder will rotate in mid-air in the direction the D-Pad or Analog

-----------------
4.2.1 - Mistys
-----------------
Misty Pointm Values:

TRICK POINTS

Misty 180 - - 340
Misty 360 - - 430
Misty 540 - - 520
Misty 720 - - 860
Misty 900 - - 950
Misty 1080 - - 1040

-If anyone knows the point values for 1240 and above,
please email me.

-------------------------------
4.3 - Ground Tricks
-------------------------------
Perform these tricks while just.. boarding along the ground.

BUTTON COMBO TRICK(POINTS)

/U\ + (B) - - Front Manual(100)
\D/ + (B) - - Wheelie Manual(100)

-The point value grows as you hold the manual longer.
-I am not sure how many points per second it increases.
-Apparently, the more manuals you do, the base value increases.
I've had the base value start at 130, and 180.
-I have only found one mode of play where you get points for
manuals; Line Versus, a Battle Mode in Match Race.
-..It is a good cheap way to win Line Versus, altough.

-------------------------------
4.4 - Specialty Tricks
-------------------------------
Each character has their own specialty moves:
-One-step sepcialties(DJ Ken's moves) are worth 180 points.
-Two-step specialties are worth 250 points, plus the
first trick.
-Three-step specialties(Monica's Born to be Free, etc)
are worth 450 points, plus the first two tricks.

King Step - - (B)+\D/, [R]+\D/, [R]+/U\

*I am not sure if Snowman, or Gray have specialty moves, do they?

-------------------------------
4.5 - Point system
-------------------------------

-All tricks are worth base value listed.
-In combos, the second trick is worth ABOUT one and a fourth of it's
base value(eg, an Indy's worth 125, instead of 100)
-..And the third trick is worth ABOUT one and a half of it's base
value (eg, an Indy's worth 150, instead of 100)
-Doing a combo 'Fakie' adds 20 points to the combo.
-Doing a spin 'B.Side' takes away 20 points from the spin.
-Holding a trick will get you a larger 'finish'.
-You cannot do the same trick twice in a row.
*I'm not sure how the Finish system works, a mix between landing,
length of combo, complexity, and so on, i think.

-An example broken down:
I did a Fakie B.Side 540, with a Tail Grab, and Mute.

SCREEN SAYS BROKEN DOWN

Fakie 20 - - +20 for doing it Fakie.
Tail Grab 120 - - Tail Grab initial value of 120.
Mute 187 - - Mute(150) + 1/4th Mute Value(150/4 = 37)
B.Side 540 270 - - 180(110) + 180(90) + 180(90) - B.Side(20)
Finish 177 - - Uh, I dunno...

6.1 FREE RIDE
-------------------------------

-----------------
6.1.1 - Mountain Review
-----------------
Manual Description:
Bone up on your skills with this slope-style practice level
course. Be sure to mind the sheep!

Jp's Description:
A run down a slope which changes scenery alot. A quick run
through an ordinary mountain town turns into a very ancient
looking town after a run-by with a train. And it ends with
a good set-up for a big jump passing by a highway, overlooking
a moderate-sized city, after a small run through a cave.

Trick Areas: 5

Things of Interest:
- Watch for the helicopter that gets smashed early on in the stage.
- The changing scenery is also noteworthy.
- Hitting sheep across the mountain is kinda fun...
- That train is a bad omen of things to come...
- The cave also serves as a bad omen...
- The city at the end, while beautiful, is also a bad omen...

-----------------
6.1.2 - Emerald Coast
-----------------
Manual Description:
Complete Course 1 to ride this tree covered run. Avoid the
gullies and don't hurt the trees!

Jp's Description:
They like to change the situation of these runs a lot, apparently.
A small cross on a wooden bridge, leads through a small cave
into a beautiful forest, then another cave run leads to a cliff-run
with some ruins dotting the edges. You then go through an ancient
temple of some sorts, which while beautiful, seems kind of
unrealistic(And like a Misty 2520 isn't?).

Trick Areas: 5

Things of Interest:
- Watch out for the falling pillars right before you enter the
temple.
- The 4th Trick Area is somewhat hidden. When you first enter
the temple, after the 3rd Trick area, the path splits, take
the path to the right, and it will lead to the 4th Trick Area.

-----------------
6.1.3 - Urban Striker
-----------------
Manual Description:
Place in the top 3 for Course 2 to hit the big bad city in a
snowstorm. Don't broadslide the buildings!

Jp's Description:
I told you the city in Mountain Review was an omen!
A long run amongst a bunch of buildings, turns into a quick
run through a factory. There are certain places I can't get
to in the factory though. Any help?

Trick Areas: 4?

Things of Interest:
- There isn't much of interest here, just a bunch of buildings,
and a factory...

-----------------
6.1.4 - Cave Striker
-----------------
Manual Description:
Place in the top 3 for Course 3 to go underground on this
historical trek. Watch out for them bones!

Jp's Description:
I told you the cave was an omen!
An old, deserted city leads into a rather large cave, which
leads out onto an apparent glacier, and ends in front of a
factory. I hate this level...

Tricks Areas: 6

Things of Interest:
- Like the manual description says, watch out for them bones.
- The 3rd checkpoint is somewhat hidden. After the 2nd Trick Area,
instead of overshooting the road and boarding alongside it, follow
it, and you will come to it as the road ends.
- The 4th checkpoint is often missed, as well. In the cave, once you
pass the waterfall, stay on the top level of rock, and you will
come to it.
- You NEED the 3rd and 4th checkpoints to get through this level
with good scores. They are good areas to pull of Misty 360's and
the sort.

-----------------
6.1.5 - Dancing Devils
-----------------
Manual Description:
Place in the top 3 for TOTAL in Course 4 to board this radical
track with some freaky hairpin turns!

Jp's Description:
And you thought Cave Striker was bad? this one will take you
to the edge of multiple cliffs, throw boulders on you, throw
you into a cave with many chances to fall, and send a train
barreling after you.

Trick Areas: 6

Things of Interest:
- I told you the train was an omen!
- The 2nd Trick Area is somewhat hidden. After that first boulder
takes you out, stay on top, and make all the jumps, and, you'll
reach it.
- It's almost impossible to beat this course without outrunning
the train. It is possible, but, pretty hard.

-----------------
6.1.6 - Ending Course
-----------------
*No Manual Description.

Jp's Description:
The practice course from Cool Boarders 2, an interesting way to
roll the credits.

Trick Areas: 19

Things of Interest:
- It's the credits, it's cool, enjoy it!

-----------------
6.1.7 - Secret Force
-----------------
*No Manual Description

Jp's Description:
The SECRET level! Take a ride through Area 51! I'm getting sick of
this alien stuff in boarding/skating games...

Trick Areas: 6

Things of Interest:
- The plane crash at the beginning is cool, watch out for the jeep
that comes barreling out of the tunnel after the crash, though.
- When the tunnel levels out, look for the signs on the cieling,
pointing right, GO RIGHT, or else you will fall... badly.
- Right after the tunnel underwater ends, and the tunnel splits
up, stay to the left, it's the shortest direct way out.
- When you reach the end, look at all the little flying saucers
darting around, kinda cool, eh?

-------------------------------
6.2 - SUPER PIPE
-------------------------------

-----------------
6.2.1 - Super Pipe
-----------------
Manual Description:
Compared with out previous halfpipes, this baby features a section
with an oversized lip that'll gurantee you'll catch some major air.

Jp's Description:
Just a halfpipe, a large one, with an oversized lip, yes, but,
still a halfpipe.

-----------------
6.2.2 - Extra Super Pipe
-----------------
Manual Description:
The design for this truly intense course was based on an Amusement
Park. Conquer this bad boy, and you'll be ready for anything!
However, to earn the right to ride this course, you'll have to place
in the top three rankings for the Super Pipe. Good Luck!

Jp's Description:
A WICKED halfpipe, massively long, lots of turns, and twists, and
variations. It will grow in height, drop down, just stop for a short
gap. This one is impressive, and tough to beat...

-------------------------------
8.1 - Characters
-------------------------------

-There are 2 secret characters:
The Snowman, and Gray the Alien.

-You get the Snowman for beating the high score(i'm not sure if it's
time, trick, total, or all) in the ending course.

-You get Gray for just beating the Secret Force track.

-Unfortunately in the domestic version, there is no third secret
character, he is replaced with Jimmy(gee, aren't we lucky?).

-------------------------------
8.2 - Costumes
-------------------------------

-Every standard character has a third costume.

-I'm not sure how to get the 3rd costumes. I know i've gotten them by
beating the first 6 courses with the character's first costume, than
beating the first 5 courses with their second costume.

*I'm unsure if Jimmy, Gray, or the Snowman have third costumes.

-------------------------------
8.3 - Courses
-------------------------------

-Only the one I know of, The Secret Force.

-Get this by beating all one of the score-types(trick/time/total) in
the 5 main tracks.

-------------------------------
8.4 - Boards
-------------------------------

-Each standard board has a second graphical version. I'm not sure how
to get them, though.

-And there are the Special boards, which you get for beating all the
high scores in a score-type.

-And the super-secret board you get for beating the high score in
everything, everywhere.

*Jimmy might have secret boards, but, I dunno, any help?

*I havn't beaten the grade ranking in extra super pipe, something
may be waiting for us beyond that?

*I'm unsure if there are third costumes for Jimmy, Snowman, and Gray,
anyone know?

*I'm unsure if Snowman and Gray have special moves, anyone know?

*I'm unsure if Jimmy has hidden boards, anyone?

*Do the special boards(ALS, ARS, FSS) have second graphical versions?

*Is the secret board(HYP) it? nothing else there?

And all the people i'm thankful to!:

-UEP for making this game...

-Sega for publishing it...

-GameFAQs.com, GameAdvice.com, GamesDomain.co.uk, and GamingPlanet.com
for hosting this FAQ.

-lini, for letting me use some of the stuff from his FAQ on this one.
Specifically, specialty moves, and other things that I can't remember.

-Caliban and Blitzkrieg, for writing that great Tony Hawk FAQ which
has inspired me on one or more occasions.

-My friend, Colby, for being so sick at all video games, and pulling
off a Misty 180, and several Misty 720's.
