Desperation Moves

I have either learned about these through save states I have found on
the Internet, or through personal experience (or e-mails).

How to get Desperation Moves
Similar to the Limits in Final Fantasy 8, Desperation Moves can only be
done while your character is low on HP (kneeling down). Then, when you
choose the FIGHT command, there is a chance that you will do a
Desperation move.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Terra's Desperation is the Riot Blade. Terra throws several energy
blades at the enemy.

Edgar's Desperation is the Royal Shock. A beam of light strikes the
enemy.

Sabin's Desperation attack is the Tiger Break. He dashes straight into
the enemy for major damage.

Celes' Desperation is called Spin Edge. Celes jumps in and pulls off a
spinning attack with her weapon.

Mog's Desperation attack is the Moogle Rush. It looks remarkably similar
to Sabin's Pummel, and does a good amount of damage.

Setzer's Desperation is Red Card. Setzer throws three sets of cards at
the enemy for a good amount of damage.

Strago's Desperation is the Sabre Soul. Strago jumps at the enemy and
delivers a solid blow with his weapon, possibly delivering a one-hit
kill.

Relm's Desperation is the Star Prism. Stars circle the enemy and kill it
in one hit.

Gogo's Desperation is X-Meteo. It strikes four times with a large
meteor.

Cyan's Desperation is Back Blade. The screen goes blank, and Cyan
delivers a powerful slash to the enemy.

Locke's Desperation is Mirager. Locke jumps in and deals a powerful
blow.

Gau, Umaro, Biggs/Vicks, Wedge, and Leo don't have desperations because
they either don't have a FIGHT command or they have something equipped
that prevents them from using it.

Note: I don't know if any of the NPCs (the Moogles, Ghosts, Banon, etc).
have Desperations. Can anyone help me with this?

Spell List (many thanks to The Mynock's list, which helped in writing
this. Most of my information was taken from the game itself, though)

Note: Many White and Black Spells can affect an entire group. Press the
R button to make a spell hit all allies or enemies. The effect won't be
as powerful as just hitting one enemy or ally, though.

Esper List

This list includes the spells that they will give you when equipped. The
Learn rate is how much percentage you will get for gaining one spell
point with that Esper equipped (so if it was 5%, and you got 3 magic
points, you would have learned the spell 15%) It also tells you the
effect that Esper has when it is summoned, and any Level-up bonuses it
may have.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Alexandr

When summoned: strong Pearl element attack (90 MP)
Level up bonus: None.

Pearl- 2%
Shell- 10%
Safe- 10%
Dispel- 10%
Remedy- 15%

Alexander is a fairly good Esper. It is the only esper that teaches
Pearl, and Shell, Safe and Remedy are all useful. Alexander is found in
the throne room in Doma Castle, after you enter Cyan's soul (World of
Ruin).
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Bahamut

When summoned: Non-element attack that ignores defense (86 MP)
Level up bonus: Max HP goes up by 50

Flare- 2%

I like Bahamut. He only has one spell, but it's a good one. Flare does
major damage to one enemy, and it costs a reasonable amount of MP. The
level-up bonus is also very good, possibly the best in the game. You
find Bahamut after defeating Doom Gaze in the World of Ruin.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Bismark

When summoned: Water-element attack (50 MP)
Level up bonus: None

Fire- 20%
Ice- 20%
Bolt- 20%
Life- 2%

A good esper early on. You learn the basic Fire, Ice and Bolt spells
very quickly, and Life, which is handy. Later on, though, it becomes
obsolete. You get Bismark in the Magitek Factory in the World of
Balance.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Crusader

When summoned: Major damage to allies and enemies (96 MP)
Level up bonus: Max MP goes up by 50

Merton- 1%
Meteor- 10%

Crusader is a very good esper. Meteor is a good spell, and Merton,
although learned slowly, is the best offensive spell in the game (equip
Fire shields so that it heals you and hurts the enemy!). Having 50 extra
MP after a battle is also very nice. Crusader is found after you defeat
the 8 dragons in the World of Ruin. (Doesn't the summon look
suspiciously like Knights of the Round? Hmm...)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Carbunkl

When summoned: Casts Reflect on all allies (36 MP)
Level up bonus: None

Rflect- 5%
Haste- 3%
Shell- 2%
Safe- 2%
Warp- 2%

Carbunkl teaches some good spells like Shell, Safe and Warp, but they
are learned rather slowly. I didn't find Carbunkl very useful but you
might. Carbunkl is found in the Magitek Factory in the World of Balance.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Fenrir

When summoned: Makes holograms of party (makes you harder to hit) (70
MP)
Level up bonus: Maximum MP goes up by 30

Warp- 10%
X-Zone- 5%
Stop- 3%

Fenrir is a useful Esper, because of the almighty X-Zone. This spell is
capable of wiping out an entire enemy party instantly. The other two
spells aren't too useful, but the level-up bonus is very nice, and the
summon is pretty useful against tough enemies like the Dirt Dragon. You
find Fenrir when you defeat Phunbaba in the World of Ruin.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Golem

When summoned: Makes all allies immune to physical attacks(33 MP)
Level up bonus: Stamina goes up by 2

Safe- 5%
Stop- 5%
Cure 2- 5%

Golem isn't too good of an Esper. It teaches Safe, Stop and Cure 2
relatively quickly, but there are many other Espers that teach these
spells as well (go for Starlet if you need a healing Esper). You can buy
Golem in the Auction House.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Ifrit

When summoned: Fire attack on all enemies (26 MP)
Level up bonus: Strength goes up by 1

Fire- 10%
Fire 2- 5%
Drain- 1%

Ifrit is a pretty good Esper early on. Fire and Fire 2 are learned
quickly, and Ifrit is the only esper that teaches Drain, which is useful
against tough enemies. You find Ifrit in the Magitek Factory in the
World of Balance.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Kirin

When summoned: Casts Regen on all allies (18 MP)
Level up bonus: None

Cure- 5%
Cure 2- 1%
Regen- 3%
Antdot- 4%
Scan- 5%

Kirin is a pretty good Esper early on. Cure, Regen, and Cure 2 are
pretty useful, and Scan is good for finding your enemy's weakness. Once
you get Unicorn and Starlet, Kirin will see a lot less use. You get
Kirin in Zozo in the World of Balance.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Maduin

When summoned: Non-element attack (44 MP)
Level up bonus: Magic Power goes up by 1

Fire 2- 3%
Ice 2- 3%
Bolt 2- 3%

Maduin is a pretty good Esper. Fire 2, Ice 2, and Bolt 2 are all useful
towards the middle of the game, and this Esper teaches all three. Maduin
is also a good summon, as it's attack is non-elmental. Maduin is found
in the Magitek Factory in the World of Balance.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Odin

When summoned: Instant defeat to all enemies (70 MP)
Level up bonus: Speed goes up by 1

Meteor- 1%

Odin isn't too good of an Esper, and you'll have him for such a short
time that it's unlikely you'll learn Meteor. Power him up into Raiden
instead. Odin can be found in the Ancient Castle in the World of Ruin.
He does have one use, however. He is the only Esper that gives a speed
bonus. Equip him to Locke and go up a bunch of levels, and Locke will be
very good at stealing items.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Palidor

When summoned: Everyone does a Jump attack (61 MP)
Level up bonus: None

Haste- 20%
Slow- 20%
Haste 2- 2%
Slow 2- 2%
Float- 5%

Palidor is a really useful Esper. Haste and Slow are learned quickly,
and Haste 2 and Slow 2 are very good spells. The summon isn't that good,
but the great spells more than make up for it. You find Palidor on the
beach of the Solitary Island in the World of Ruin.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Phantom

When summoned: Casts Vanish on all allies (38 MP)
Level up bonus: Max MP goes up by 10

Bserk- 3%
Vanish- 3%
Demi- 5%

Phantom is useful, if only for the Vanish spell. Cast this followed by
Doom and you can kill nearly any boss in one hit! You can get Phantom in
the Magitek Factory in the World of Balance.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Phoenix

When summoned: Revives all downed allies (110 MP)
Level up bonus: None

Life- 10%
Life 2- 2%
Life 3- 1%
Cure 3- 2%
Fire 3- 3%

Phoenix is one of the best Espers in the game. It is the only Esper that
teaches both Life 2 and Life 3. Cure 3 and Fire 3 are also really useful
spells. Although most of Phoenix's spells are learned slowly, they are
some of the best in the game. You find Phoenix after completing the
Phoenix Cave.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Ragnarok

When summoned: Randomly turns enemies into items (6 MP)
Level up bonus: None

Ultima- 1%

Ragnarok is one of the best Espers. It only teaches one spell, but it's
one of the best offensive spells in the game. Summoning Ragnarok can be
useful to get some cool stuff like X-Potions and Magicite (bring Gogo
and keep Mimicing until you turn all the enemies into items). You find
Ragnarok in Narshe in the World of Ruin. When the guy gives you a choice
between the sword and the "rock", choose the rock.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Raiden

When summoned: Instant defeat to all enemies (80 MP)
Level up bonus: Strength goes up by 2

Quick- 1%

Raiden rocks. Quick gives you two turns in a row after you cast it
(start the battle with Quick, then follow it up with Haste 2 and Slow
2!) Having two extra Strength points after a level-up is also useful.
Keep Raiden equipped for a long time on a strong character (like Sabin
or Cyan) and you'll be nearly invincible. You find Raiden in the Ancient
Castle, in the secret room.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Ramuh

When summoned: Lightning attack on all enemies (25 MP)
Level up bonus: Stamina goes up by 1

Bolt- 10%
Bolt 2- 2%
Poison- 5%

Ramuh is a fairly good Esper early on. It's useful for the siege on the
Magitek Factory (several of the enemies are weak against lightning!).
Later on, Ramuh becomes less and less useful, though. You find Ramuh in
Zozo in the World of Balance.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Shiva

When summoned: Ice attack on all enemies (27 MP)
Level up bonus: None

Ice- 10%
Ice 2- 5%
Rasp- 4%
Osmose- 4%
Cure- 3%

Shiva is a good esper early in the game. Ice and Ice 2 are both learned
fairly quickly, and Shiva teaches Rasp and Osmose, two very useful
spells. Shiva is found in the Magitek Factory in the World of Balance.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Shoat

When summoned: Casts Break on all enemies (45 MP)
Level up bonus: Max HP goes up by 10

Bio- 8%
Break- 5%
Doom- 3%

Shoat is a moderately good Esper. Break isn't that good, but Bio and
Doom can be useful. The summon isn't that great, and neither is the
Level Up bonus. Just use this one to learn Bio and Doom. Shoat is found
in the Magitek Factory in the World of Ruin.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Siren

When summoned: Casts Mute on all enemies (16 MP)
Level up bonus: Max HP goes up by 10

Sleep- 10%
Mute- 8%
Slow- 7%
Fire- 6%

I didn't find Siren's spells very useful. In fact, I didn't find Siren
very useful at all. Skip on this one unless you absolutely must have
every spell. Siren can be found in Zozo in the World of Balance.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Sraphim

When summoned: Restores some HP to all party members (40 MP)
Level up bonus: None

Life- 5%
Cure 2- 8%
Cure- 20%
Regen- 10%
Remedy- 4%

Sraphim is a good esper if you buy it in the World of Balance. It
teaches Life and Cure 2, which are both useful early on. The summon
isn't too useful, but the spells it teaches are essential. You can buy
it in Tzen from a man in the trees (in the World of Balance or the World
of Ruin).
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Starlet

When Summoned: Restores HP to all characters (?? MP)
Level Up Bonus: Stamina +2

Cure- 25%
Cure 2- 16%
Cure 3- 1%
Regen- 20%
Remedy- 20%

Starlet is a really good esper. It teaches Cure and Cure 2 quickly, and
is one of the few espers that teaches Cure 3. Regen and Remedy are also
useful. The summon isn't that great, and the level up bonus is pretty
good. You find Starlet in the house with the haunted paintings in the
World of Ruin.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Stray

When summoned: Casts Muddle on all enemies (28 MP)
Level up bonus: Magic Power goes up by 1

Muddle- 7%
Imp- 5%
Float- 2%

Stray isn't too great of an Esper. Muddle and Imp aren't really very
useful (unless you collect all the Imp gear), and Float is useful only
to avoid the dreaded Quake spell. You find Stray in Zozo on the World of
Balance.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Terrato

When summoned: Earth element attack (40 MP)
Level up bonus: Max HP goes up by 30

Quake- 3%
Quartr- 1%
W Wind- 1%

A pretty good Esper. Terrato is the only Esper that teaches these three
spells, and they're pretty useful for the most part (just don't use W
Wind against bosses). You find Terrato after defeating Umaro in the
World of Ruin.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Tritoch

When summoned: Fire, Ice and Lightning element attack (68 MP)
Level up bonus: Magic Power goes up by 2 (equip it to a powerful magic
user like Mog or Terra)

Fire 3- 1%
Ice 3- 1%
Bolt 3- 1%

Tritoch is a really good Esper. It is the only Esper that teaches Bolt 3
and Ice 3, two very useful spells. The summon is pretty good, too
(except that if an enemy absorbs any of the three elementals, it will be
healed by the effect). You find Tritoch in the hills of Narshe in the
World of Ruin.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Unicorn

When summoned: Casts Remedy on all allies (30 MP)
Level up bonus: None

Cure 2- 4%
Remedy- 3%
Dispel- 2%
Safe- 1%
Shell- 1%

Of all the healing Espers, Unicorn is the worst. It teaches spells too
slowly to be effective, and all of its spells can be learned by other
espers. The summon is moderately useful, but otherwise leave this one
alone.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
Zoneseek

When summoned: Casts Shell on all allies (30 MP)
Level up bonus: Magic Power goes up by 2

Rasp- 20%
Osmose- 15%
Shell- 5%

Zoneseek is one of the best Espers in the game. Rasp and Osmose are both
very useful spells, and Shell is pretty useful as well. The summon is
useful against heavy magic users (like Magimaster and Wrexsoul).
Zoneseek can be bought at the Auction House in either world.

Many thanks to gmckinnon@cois.on.ca for some misc. info which I used

missing Desperation info).
