=i. Introduction & Version History=
=---------------------------------=
Welcome to my UNO FAQ for the Gameboy Color! Now, first let me give
you a brief history of myself. My real name _is_ Dallas and I am
a male for anyone who really cares. Now, I write FAQs such as this
one for an excellent site called GameFAQs (www.GameFAQs.com). I have
written a total of 36 FAQs (This is my 22nd) and I am ranked #18 in
the Top 30 at GameFAQs. Why do I write FAQs you ask? Well the main
reason is for a hobby, because it is fun for me. The 2nd obvious
reason is to help out needy gamers with their games.

Now I know that UNO may not be too popular with some of you, in fact
I doubt anybody even really needs help on the game, but this popular
card game is very "FAQable" so why not write one? This FAQ IS for
the game of UNO on the GBC, but it can ALSO be for the normal card
game, as I have included a "How to Play" section which teaches
people how to play the GBC version as well as the popular card game
UNO!

V0.2 (05/22/2000): FAQ Reformatted. New ASCII Added.
V0.3 (06/23/2000): Added a few minor things to the FAQ.

=I. History of Uno=
=-----------------=
Ok, I don't know much about the history of UNO, however I do know that
I own a bunch of different decks of the popular game. Here is what
UNO is all about...

UNO is a card game consisting of 2-Infinite players. The goal of the
game is to be the first one to get rid of all your cards. To do this
you place them in a "Trash Pile". Sounds easy right? Well, there's
a bit more to it than that. See the "How to Play" section in my FAQ
to learn the rules of UNO and how to play the game.

There are too many different decks of UNO, I own some of them such
as the basic main deck, the 10th or 20th anniversary deck, I forget
which it was, and a few others, but this FAQ is for the Game of UNO.
The newest version of UNO has been digitalized into a Gameboy Color
game and it's funner than ever! I suggest you search the WWW for some
more info. on the history of UNO.

=II. Gameplay Types=

options:

No. of Players: 1-4

This plays a quick game of UNO with the settings you choose.

CHALLENGE UNO

This is a bit different, you can choose the same options as UNO
gameplay but this is a series of games (5 I think) not just 1.
Here are the options to choose from:

No. of Players: 1-4
Skill: 1-5

=III. Deck Themes=
=----------------=
In UNO you can choose from different Deck themes which makes this
game even better! Here are all the themes and a description of
each one...

WILD WEST:
----------
This deck is a western type deck, the WILD card animations show
an UNO card with boots and a hat on, drawing a gun. If you are
in to western stuff, choose this deck (Sort of like Wild Wild West :p)

GROOVY:
-------
This is a sort of Austin Powers deck. The WILD card animations show
an UNO card splitting into 4 pieces and it's a funky deck. Choose this
if you like the Austin Powers type stuff.

STANDARD:
---------
This is just your standard UNO deck. Nothing special here, just plain
old UNO :p.

SPACE:
------
An outer space deck. The WILD card animations show an UNO card
as an Alien standing on a planet. Choose this deck if you are in to
Outer Space, UFO type stuff.

=IV. How to Play=
=---------------=
OK, are you new to UNO? Want to learn how to play this wonderful card
game? Well, I don't have the "official" rules, but I do know the rules
to playing the GBC game as well as the game itself, so here they are...

GOAL of UNO: The goal of the game UNO is to get rid of all of your cards
before any of your opponents do. To do this you and your opponents take
turns either placing the cards in your hand into the "Trash Pile" or
you draw more cards. Here's an explanation:

Basic Concept:
--------------
First all of the cards in the deck are shuffled, then each player is
dealt a certain number of cards, I believe 8 or so. There can be up
to 4 players in this game, you _can_ have more, but it's not recommended
because it takes cards away from the "drawing pile". Once each player
has their cards, the remaining cards in the deck are left on the table
or playing field. Then, the top card of the remaining cards is turned
over and set to the left of the remaining cards. So you should have
a pile of cards face down, this is your "drawing pile" and you should
have 1 card face UP next to the "drawing pile", this is the "trash pile".
Here's an illustration:

                     ___________ ___________
                    |9 UNO| | UNO |
                    | | | |
                    | TRASH | | DRAWING |
                    | PILE | | PILE |
                    | (FACE UP) | |(FACE DOWN)|
                    | | | |
                    | | | |
                    |UNO 9| | UNO |

This is just an example, the "9" is just used for example purposes.

Now, the game begins. Each player gets a turn, and on his/her turn
he/she gets the chance to place 1 card down on the Trash Pile. This
can ONLY be done under certain conditions, here are those conditions:

A card can ONLY be placed on the trash pile IF:
The card is the SAME color as the one on the top of the trash pile.
The card is the SAME Number (any color) as the one on top of the
  trash pile.
It is a Wild Card (4 Colors)

There may be other times when a card can be placed on the "trash pile"
but those are the main ones. The color of the top card (on Trash Pile)
can change at any time, so be careful. Now, say none of the cards in
your hand can be placed on the "trash pile" what do you do now? Well,
first make SURE that you have NO cards that can be placed, once you
are sure, you will have to draw a card from the "Drawing Pile". Each
time it is your turn and you don't have any cards to place on the
"trash pile" you will have to draw 1 card from the "drawing Pile".
That's bad, because remember, you are trying to get rid of all your
cards, not get more.

Here are 2 different Illustrations on what I'm talking about:
All cards that are "ABOVE" the others in "YOUR HAND" are ones
that can be placed on the Trash Pile:

                +---------------------------------+

Hopefully, those illustrations sort of give you an idea of what
to do in UNO. Those are just the 2 basic things however, there
are a bunch of other variables in the game, which I will explain
below. Now, that you know the basic concept of UNO, you need
to learn the variables to the game, so here they are...

Game Variables:
---------------
Ok, here are some of the other "things" or "variables" in the game.

Wild Cards:
Wild Cards are cool, they let you change the color of the card to
whatever you want. Pick the color you have most of in your deck
and use your Wild Card to change the card color to that. This will
help you get rid of those pesky cards. But be careful, one of your
opponents can change the color right back if they have the right card.
Here's an Illustration of the Wild Card:

                        ___________
                       |WILD WILD|
                       | |
                       | _ _ |
                       |  /_||_\   |
                       |  \_||_/   |
                       | |
                       | |
                       |WILD WILD|

Draw 4 Cards:
These things are great if you have them, but are deadly if someone
uses one against you. Whenever a "Draw 4" card is placed down the
player who's turn is next has to draw 4 cards from the "Drawing Pile"
which adds 4 more cards to their hand. Here's an illustration of the
Draw 4 Card:

                        ___________
                       |DRAW 4|
                       | |
                       | _ _ |
                       |  |_||_|   |
                       |  |_||_|   |
                       | |
                       | |
                       |4 DRAW|

Draw 2 Cards:
These are basically the same thing as Draw 2 Cards, except when used,
the victim draws 2 cards instead of 4, so it adds 2 more cards to that
victims hand. Again, these are great if you have them, but suck if you
get one used against you. Here's an Illustration of the Draw 2 Card:

                        ___________
                       |DRAW 2|
                       | |
                       | _ _ |
                       |  |1||2|   |
                       |  |_||_|   |

Skip Cards:
These are pretty cool, when used, they skip the next player's turn
and goes to the next person. They can be useful to you if you don't
have any cards to place in the Trash Pile, but sometimes can suck.
Like say you and one of your opponent's both have 1 card left (UNO)
and you get skipped and they put their card down and win, that's an
example of how Skip Cards can suck. Here's a diagram of how Skip
Card works, following that is an illustration of the skip card:

All Draw 4 Card:
This card is deadly! When played EVERY player (other than the person
who put the card down) has to draw 4 cards. So say you put down an
"All Draw 4 Card", that means all other players (not you) have to draw
4 cards from the "Drawing Pile". Here is a diagram showing how it works
and following is an Illustration of the All Draw 4 Card:

                     +-------------------------------+

Reverse Card:
Just as this card suggests, the Reverse Card sends the order of play
backwards. So say you are first, and 3 opponents follow. When the
Reverse card is used the 3 opponents are first, second, third and you
will be last. Here's an illustration of the card:

                                 ___________
                                |REV CARD|

0 Card:
This is a new addition as far as I know of, it is in the Gameboy Color
game, and I don't know what it does, if anyone know, please drop me
a line at Dallas@DodgerStats.com, I would really appreciate it and I will
credit anyone who tells me. Here's an illustration of the 0 Card:

                                 ___________
                                |0 CARD|

                                | \ / / |
                                | |

Wild Draw 4 Card:
This is basically a combination of the Wild Card and the Draw 4 Card.
When played, the person who plays it gets to change the color of
the card AND the next player after them has to draw 4 cards. So this
is a very valuable card. Here's an Illustration of the Wild Draw 4
Card:

                                 ___________
                                |WILD DRAW 4|

                                | +4 ___ +4 |

                                | | | | |
                                | +4 +4 |
                                | |
                                |WILD DRAW 4|

Well, those are all the ones I can think of right now, if you know
anymore that I forgot to add, let me know. Anyway, this actually
_is_ enough information for you to be able to win games, but there
are a few other simple rules you need to know...

Simple Rules:
-------------
When you have 1 Card left Call out UNO (Not on GBC)
otherwise you can't win the game.

You only get 1 turn, unless you play a reverse card.

Don't cheat, if you lose, you lose, it's just a game.

That should be all you need to know in order to win at this fun
game. Whether playing the GBC Game or the real card game itself
I have provided all players enough info. to enable them to start
the game and begin winning matches left and right.

If you are an amatuer at this game, I suggest you set the skill
to 5 or close to it. If you are a rookie (beginner) at the game,
you should leave it at the Default or set it to 1 or 2.

Well, that's how to play, hopefully you will become great at this
game, like I sort of am. The best part of the GBC Game is the
Deck Themes which add a lot more fun to this already fun game.
