Too much Tenchu 2 playing is required to write these FAQs, I have played it a lot,
but it's a pain to get Grand Master on every level. For instance on the first level
you have to kill every enemy ninja and not be seen at all to get the rank. Doing
lots of different moves can get you extra moves, but it's not really worth it.
I've also been playing around with the level editor. Kind of cool, but some levels
are limited in terms of what kind of characters and traps you can put in. I made
this brilliant level of a base with guards patrolling everywhere, I mean two guards
always on the screen. To complete the mission you have to sneak into the base (as
stealth is on) and steal the scroll, but I've made it so that if you kill anyone then
another guard will find out and hunt you down. Nice.
I'm still annoyed that I don't have a Playstation 2 yet. As I live in the UK, it's
difficult to get one cheaply and the console comes out on 26th October (what!!!) with
an even more irritating order only scheme for purchase (what!!!?!!?!!!!?) grrr.
As well as that, I will have to pay a third more than it is sold for in the US,
what is going on???
I may as well buy a Japanese console, but I'm not sure. I need games like Shin Sangoku
Musou, Onimashu and Metal Gear solid 2. But then it needs all of the mains plugs and
new cables and I have to learn Japanese!
Should get a job though, I traded in tons of my games (nooooooooooooooooooo) and got
some money back, but I know that I'll miss them.
I read somewhere that Takumo Endo, the President of Acquire was thinking of a sequel
to Tenchu! More emphasis would hopefully be put on the shadows and sound that the
ninja makes. I really hope that it goes through in the end.

So if there is going to be a Tenchu 3, then it must include:

- Cheesewire for garotting guards
- The death touch so you can kill enemies
- Cool tapping wall move from MGS
- Ninja bow with explosive arrows (Predator style)
- Zombies

I think Suzaku the Red Sparrow is Onikage. Lord Mei-oh ressurected him from
the dead as he was such an evil man (killed Yukihotura in cold blood) to be
his henchman. Anyway, they look the same, he has similar tatoos and all.
Who knows?

INTRODUCTION
************************************************

Here is a brief introduction to the beginning of the game:

Lord Gohda Matsunoshin is a warlord with control over the Azuma ninja,
a group of specially trained warriors that he calls upon in times of need.
The ninja clan is tought by Azuma Shiunsai, who has raised the ninjas
since they were infants. He steps down as head of the Azuma ninja and
gives the sword to Tatsumaru, one of the ninjas.
After an encounter with Kagami, the leader of the rebel ninja group called
Burning Dawn, he is converted and becomes a different person. After
murdering Azuma Shiunsai, the other two ninjas, Rikimaru and Ayame, must
defeat Tatsumaru who has breached the code of the ninja along with other
opponents and outer threats.

UPDATES
************************************************

What have I put in since?
some boss guides, 1/2 finished walkthrough, death moves,
problems and some other deaths,
useful things. Send me some problems for me to put on.
and as for codes, stop asking me, i'll put them on when i get them
how can you buy this amazing game and then cheat??!?!?!
you will never be ninja...

NEW FEATURES
************************************************

- Underwater swimming! You can now swim out of view, just beneath the
surface of the water, waiting to jump out and execute ninjas. You have
to breath though, so hold down R1 to use a sneaky bamboo reed to breathe
just like James Bond. Oh and watch out for sharks that hunt you down,
they act very realistically, not that I would know how they act, my
    research is from Jaws.

- Search and move bodies! The ninja can now pull dead bodies out of view
and into abandoned mines and behind large stones. Try pulling them into
the water for a laugh and watch them float. You can also search them for
items. Put away the sword and crouch (R1) to look for ninja items.

- Remove sword! Not much point to this, but it allows you to do extra stuff
like searching corpses and it looks nicer also.

- New execution move! Crouch behind someone and you can do a new silent
killing method. Rikimaru goes for taking out the legs and then the steel
blade between the ribs. You can also do jumping killing moves like stabbing
    them through the back.

- New character! Tatsumaru becomes unlocked once you complete the game with
Rikimaru and Ayame, who both I must add have seperate levels and then you
have Tatsumarus, a total of 28 levels!

- Level editor!!! Similar to the one included on the Japanese edition of Tenchu.
You can make quite advanced levels and save them to memory card. Levels can
include enemy routes, different objectives, underwater bits, traps and everything.

- Other extra stuff! 3d items, use caltrops and knives when running, spinning
moves, poisoning, new items, bigger levels, other things.

Tenchu 2 was not as impressive as the first one in my opinion. I remember playing a
preview of the first Tenchu and loving it because of it's originality, gameplay and
darkness. I still play it more than any other of my PSX games because it is so
difficult to master. Each time you start off a mission, it is a challenge to finish
it without being seen at all and killing every single guard. I loved the character
Rikimaru, the way he was all one dark colour who was slightly evil.
When I played Tenchu 2 I was shocked a bit at how much nicer the game was. The main
thing that I don't like about it is the lack of darkness. It makes the game less of
a ninja game, but more of an adventure game. Then the levels were not as well
structured as it's predessesor. Most levels are purely a vast open space with lots
of trees and boxes, as apposed to the solid and confined Tenchu1 levels.
The sequel has no music as such and characters such as Rikimaru have become even more
westernised than before. Rikimaru is no longer as silent and deadly as he was, but
is more immature and colorful. I can understand that he is younger, but it makes the
game more innocent which isn't as good.
This doesn't mean that it is worse than Tenchu, only different. The introduction of
swimming makes the game far more open in terms of how the mission can be approached.
Before water limited the character, now you can use it to your advantage, especially on
the boat missions. The removal of bodies makes it more fun as well, and necassery due
to the increased proximity of the baddies. The cut scenes are much better and you can
skip them, I don't know how many times I had to watch that Tenchu1 cut scene:

"Minister Kataoka sure likes his money!"
"What is this Bizenya? There is more here than usual"
"We could not do buisness without you, the money is merely a token of our appreciation"
"I like the way you think, what can I help you with today?"
"We have put in bids for the construction work, if you could only...."
"Leave it to me, but remember what happened to Echigoya..."
"Eh he he he"

Tenchu1 still had virtually no linked storyline between the levels, which was good. I
found that with the sequel the storyline was excellent, but it meant that the enemies
and levels were to similar which was dissapointing. Still it is great fun to play
around with. But if I was to be trapped on a desert island with one of the games I'd
choose the first of course.
Must be said though, this game has some seriously cool cut scenes with the sword
fighting. Reminds me of Seven samuari or Star wars. I miss Onikage though.

CHARACTERS
************************************************

Rikimaru: Probably the best of the three ninjas due to his strength and power
in attacks, he posseses easy to hit moves and has a long attack range.
Although he is slow and cannot turn as fast, he remains the best for
both beginners and masters. He also has some cool silent killing
moves, most noteably the sword through the chest and then throwing
            the enemy to the floor.

Ayame : Faster than Rikimaru and can turn faster. Her combos are faster and
bigger than Rikimaru's and this makes it easier to kill bosses. Ayame
is a good choice for those who wish to be more stealthy or those who
have trouble fighting the harder bosses. I prefer Rikimaru, but only
because he looks like a ninja.

Tatsumaru : Because he turns to the Burning dawn at the beginning of the game, he
has some cool missions to do, especially the capturing of the villagers
for slaves. He is very strong and has a useful 5 hit combo for knocking
down any enemies or bosses. Silent killing moves are cool for Tatsmaru,
especially the one when he cuts the enemy extremely fast and then after
a couple of seconds, they just die.

ENEMIES
************************************************

Katana guard = Most basic of enemies. They are poor at offence at the beginning
of the game, but when they become stronger then they can be a pain.
Use rapid combos to kill them and then drag their bodies into bushes
                 for the bugs to eat.

Spear guard = Annoying guard that has a massive attacking range. He also attacks
unexpectadly fast so remember to block. They are dangerous when you
have to fight them along with katana guards. You could try spearing
them back like Goldberg (i'm so funny i know)

Archer guard = Shoot arrows at you for some reason. Sometimes they use burning arrows
which are harsh. Try to manouever yourself behind other enemies so
the archers will kill them for you. Archers are cowards and run away
                 when challenged.

Sycthe guard = Mostly the ninja men use the two sythes to cut you up. This is bad
but the ninjas carry some cool ninja tools including the ninja blow
pipe. These guys attack fast and can jump over things like dogs.

Rifle guard = Only found on the island level. They are bad shots and will miss if
you are running or hiding behind a twig. It also means that they take
a long time to reload so you can jump in and slot them.

Claw guard = Only the women ninjas use this harsh weapon and it is even more brutal
than the one used in Onikage's castle. The ninja will attack with a
long range and scratch your eyes out. Use ninjitsu to roll forwards
                 and cut their legs off.

Sleepy guard = Decides that protecting his neck is less important than catching up
on some sleep. He will even go back to sleep briefly after being
disturbed by a ninja with a blood dripping sword half an inch from
his neck. Must give him respect though, I never kill them when I see
them, I just walk past quietly.

Zombies guard = They eat human flesh and can attack ninjas and turn them into zombies.
Unfortunatly they don't exist, but it would be cool to slice them in
half with a razor sharp sword methinks.

ITEMS
************************************************

Health Potion - Completely restores character's health. Difficult to use
when under attack as you can drop it.

Grenade - Thrown projectile that does 15 points of damage. Sometimes
the fuse won't work and you can pick it up again. Ninjas
and bosses use them as well, be careful!

Mine - Place them on the floor and wait in hiding until an enemy
steps on it and it will explode. 17 damage.

shuriken - Thrown projectile. Does 7 damage points.
Throw it behind people to distract them as well.

Caltrops - Spiked objects used to prevent chase from enemy footsoldiers.
Useless as an offensive weapon, only use it when you are being
                 attacked by many guards.

Poison Antidote - Some ninjas use poison tipped shuirikens and blades which makes
playing the game a pain when trying to move. Use the antidote
to clear your blood of the poison.

Air bottle - Fairly useless item that replenishes your oxygen when underwater.
Good for the boat levels or being like James Bond.

Colored rice - Rice in different colors to help you from getting lost. Still
it remains a pointless and ineffective item however.

Ninja Camouflage - Excellent item that makes you invisible. The character will
use some magic stealth that makes only your steel blade
visible. Lasts for 15 seconds, but if you push into an enemy
ninja then he will get suspisious.

Poison Rice - Not as amazing as it was in the first Tenchu. The idea is that
you can throw the rice onto the floor and the ninjas will walk
towards it, eat it and get poisoned. Unfortunatly, it is now
less effective. You can't throw it as far and cannot retrieve
it from the dying hands of an enemy.

Exploding arrow - Projectile that ignites enemy and sends them falling over. Good
                  for use against boss characters.

Blow gun - My favourite weapon, sit from afar and then use the blow gun to
shoot a poisoned dart into a ninja for an instant and silent kill!

Blinding dust - Makes your ninja blow painful dust into the eyes and respiritory
system of the enemy ninja for escaping.

Vaninshing tree - Hard to use item that makes your character throw leaves
everywhere and then appear behind the enemy. Takes to
long to activate and is not useful in a ruckus.

Dragon breath - Awesome explosion type item that igintes the ground to the
left, the right and front of your character dealing 30 damage.

Ninja rebirth - Item that brings your character back to life when they are killed.
The respawn point will be the beginning of the level or if you die
in the water then it will be by the shore.

Ninja armor - Makes your character only recieve 1/2 damage from enemy ninja attacks.
Looks cool also, like a samuari for Rikimaru.

Sleeping gas - Grenade item that sends sleeping gas everywhere, makes ninjas fall
over onto the floor for an easy kill.

Unfortunatly the animal horn was not included, probably because it made the game to easy
once you had the special weapon on the last level. The poison rice is not as good either,
but it was too easy to complete the game just using rice and not even letting the enemy
eat it, just keep on using it continually.

NEW FEATURES
************************************************

The moves remain the same for each of the characters, but I have included them for people
wanting to know Tatsumaru's moves.

R1, square = dragon uppercut

NINJA TACTICS
************************************************

To master the skilled art of the ninja required to progress in this game, one must learn
the movements of the enemy. Each enemy will be one of two types. The first will stand
in the same position throughout the game unless he spots an enemy ninja or a dead body.
He will wait for several seconds before turning 90 degrees in a random direction, either
left or right. This may confuse Tenchu1 veteran ninjas where the enemy will turn only 45
degrees every so often.
The second enemy will have a set path that he will not stray from unless he is disturbed.
However, the path cannot purely be examined in preperation for an ambush, the enemy will
stop at set intervals to survey the area. Tenchu1 had the enemy turning only at set times
and not at set positioning. This makes sneaking up on a guard difficult as they are prone
to instantly turning around and spotting the ninja.
To cope with the confusing tactics of the enemy, you must learn to be patient. The best
way to remove an enemy is to find a hiding place, preferably on a roof, or behind a stone.
>From here, observe the movements of the enemy. If he/she is stationary, wait for them to
turn 180 degree from yourself and then leap out and slice the enemy head off. If the enemy
is moving then follow if you are too far away, moving from tree to tree for concealment.
When the enemy turns and begins to walk, move out silently and execute the guard silently.

Sometimes it is best not to use the silent killing moves to remove enemies. This is
especially true in situations where there are more enemies around you. Most of the silent
kill or holding moves take a few seconds and the more complex can take several. If an
enemy is nearby then he can easily see the crime being commiteted and will enter for the
attack. To save yourself the embarresment and the pain, remove grouped ninja with blade
slices from afar. Do not attack from such a close range that you will grab hold of them.

HOW TO GET GRAND MASTER STATUS
************************************************

Many people asking me how to get the grand master status from the game. Unfortunatly it
isn't as simple as just killing everyone silently. You have to not be seen to really
get the rank. I can only assume that a true grand master would never be seen and if you
are then it will be hard for you to get the rank. Most people will end up with expert
ninja which is shameful for the azuma shinobi.
I must admit that this game seriously sucks in the grand master zone. I prefered the
idea of being able to complete the mission without being spotted and still get the
grand master. Unfortunatly they decided to be stupid and make it so you HAVE to kill
people which will put off some pacifists.
Your ninja will require a score of 500 or more to get the grand master ranking. At the
beginning of each level, you start of with 300 points. Each time you are spotted, you
will lose 30 points and then so on and so on until you get 0. If you make it through to
finish the level without being seen at all then you will retain the 300 points. This
however is not enough to get you the desired rank. The true grand master must therefore
execute many ninjas who get in his way, it is not good enough to simply run through the
levels and use the cheats afterwards.
For each silent kill you get, you will recieve 20 points. So in practice, you need only
kill ten or so bad ninjas and then you will get the points. Unfortunatly due to the
difficulty of the game and the strange lack of sufficient cover, the enemy will be
likely to spot you once or twice unless you are actually a master ninja (like me). So
try to kill at least 15 enemies, don't get involved in killing everyone because it
always ends up in the enemy turning around at the last minute due to impatience and then
you lose lots of points. Remember that you will only recieve 5 points for each non
silent kill you get, so avoid them. Murdering innocents will be very amusing, but will
cost you -150 points.
As well as this you have to use different moves to kill everyone. This allows you
to stack up even more points and become a grand master. So don't use the old cut
the throat method, go for different moves like the jumping kill and crouching kill.
Setting mines for well placed kills will also be favored, but be careful as they don't
do much damage. Decapitations will get you respect also.
In conclusion, you must never be seen. Use these skillful ninjitsu points for killing
and becoming a grand master:

 * Never be seen
 * Always kill silently
 * Kill all enemy
 * Use different moves
 * Decapitate
 * Use less health power ups

DEATH MOVES
************************************************

I haven't finished discovering all of the Tenchu 2 death moves, I'm too busy playing
other violent games. Still, I'll put in all of the ones so far for Rikimaru because
for some reason noone plays as Ayame even though she is probably better.

RIKIMARU DEATH MOVES
-------------------

>From behind opponenet: Grabs their head and then pulls out his sword and cuts
their throat and does some ninja pose presumably
for respect which I am sure he would not do as he is a
ninja and would probably steal their money.

Crouching behind enemy: Takes them down and then stabs them in the chest with
                          his steel blade. Very messy.

>From infront of enemy: Breaks all of the bones in the enemy's body with a number
of gruesome moves and then throws them over his shoulder
                          and does his ninja pose.

>From side of opponent: Stabs them in chest and then throws them over in a move.
Takes a long time to finish as Rikimaru is insistent on
                          doing a 180 ninja pose.

Facing opponent (hard!): The evil move! Rikimaru stabs them in the chest and
then slowly pushes the blade up through their body.
It has to hurt a lot.

Jumping onto enemy: Hard to pull off, but is funny. Rikimaru stabs the sword
through the spinal cord and then breaks their neck (necassery?)

WALKTHROUGH
************************************************

As the possibilities in Tenchu 2 to complete each missions are endless it would be
impossible to write out a definite walkthrough. I just wrote the main objectives of
each mission and how to do them quickly. As nobody asks for the Ayame ones I will
just do Rikimaru's. Enjoy.

RIKIMARU'S MISSIONS
-------------------

Mission 1: Training course

A nice level to start the game off with. At the beginning there are 4 training
missions for you to do, useful if you have never played the game before. The first
is stealth walking and using the grappling hook, the second is shuriken practise
and the third is swimming. The fourth test is attacking practice, you can find the
area across the river and into the forest. I suggest that you do this part of the
mission if you want to get a grand master rank as you can get 40 points from the two
ninjas that you can kill. After you have finished playing around and trying to hack
up the civilians, you can head up the cliff to Azuma Shiunsai's house and ask him
to test your strength as a ninja.
>From here you will have to start the level in an underground cave full of cutthroat
ninjas. Why does Azuma Shiunsai have a vast cave underneath him filled full of danger
I do not know, I can only assume that he pays them to guard the cave and to die without
a chance against ninjas. This part is quite easy. Move from corridor to corridor and
slot the ninjas one by one. Most of them are standing still so they won't pose a threat.
Those that do amble about usually find looking at a wall more interesting than watching
out for enemies so they can easily be garotted. After the first 4 or so ninjas, climb up
and drop into the water, swim left underneath and pop out, slot some ninjas, slot some
more. Use the grappling hook to swing up where the sign is and then jump down and
remove their heads. There are no bosses and the enemy carry no weapons at all. Remember
to use different death moves for each guard to increase your chance of getting grand master
rank. At the end run through the door and steal the scroll off Azuma Shiunsai and then jump
off the waterfall.

Mission 2: The Gang of Thieves

This level is in broad daylight so the enemy will be able to see further, as will you.
Therefore remember to use cover effectively and to your advantage, especially as it is
the first mission. At the beginning and throughout the level there are bells set up
on strings along the ground. If you step on these then every enemy on the level will
become aware of your presence so run around them or jump over it.
A lonely bandit can be seen towards the first building sleeping, sneak upon him and
then rip him a new one before he wakes up. Most of the enemies have no ninja tools so
it is not worth killing them in hope of finding any. For the rest of the mission, you
must look out for the archers that are positioned high on guard towers and on the roofs
of buildings. They don't move so you can stealthily climp up and then slice their head
off. From this position you will be able to see for a long distance.
There are many trees and huts for you to hide around, be aware of the water area, there
are numerous guards patroling that will get mad and hack you up if they see you. A
civilian can occasionaly be found on this level, be wary of their presence. The
objective is towards the top right of the map. Jump over fences and crawl on your
belly through shrubbery to avoid detection and conflict. When you reach the top of
the map, you will reach some rocky stairs. There is usually an archer at the top so
be careful of his long viewing distance. Hide behind the wooden pillars so you
can be concealed and then turn him into sliced sushi.

BANDIT LEADER (Garan) - He is one of the harder bosses to beat, especially as he is
on the first level. He uses his pipe as a weapon which he
also uses to fire out clouds of annoying smoke. Don't let
this mess up your respiritory system or he'll hack you into
pieces. Another problem is letting him get behind you as it
is hard to execute a reverse attack when he is slicing you up
so quickly. His health level is only 100, so it is not hard
to win. Use skillful expertese to overcome him and then
go in for the kill and decapitate him with a swift slice of
the katana. The heavens demand retribution!

Mission 2: Treason at Gohda castle

Firstly watch the funny intro and laugh, then feel guilty. The three ninjas (not the film)
must each do seperate missions. Ayame goes to princess Kiku, Tatsumaru runs after some
silly ninja and Rikimaru has to do some in door killing. This mission can be confusing,
especially after looking at the map. At the beginning you will be aware of some enemy
presence, but ignore and pace it upstairs, hack down the paper door. >From here you
have to hide and kill everyone (no change there then).
Fortunatly the enemy cannot see very far on this level, use this to your advantage. Most
of the guards are on a set path, just wait for them to stop looking and start moving away
from you before you reduce their blood pressure. There are no lethal traps, but there
are many annoying creaks on the old floorboards so run by the sides of the corridors.
Watch out for the gradual floor trap that will give way and make you fall to your death.
There are multiple levels so remember to always head upwards, the enemies hold nothing
important so do not bother searching them. When you reach the top you will see lord
Gohda getting shot (he gets injured several times in the game somehow) and the evil
Motohide. He must be severely cained.

MOTOHIDE - Double crossing, low down dog mongrel Motohide is an evil
man and must be sliced into cat food. Unfortunatly he has
a gun, whoops. He uses this a lot and therefore is a threat
if you keep your distance. There is little chance of being
able to heal yourself so you have to use your hardest attacks
and constantly keep close to him. He only has around 100 health
points before he has to give up and run away, coward. Oh and
watch out for the occasional gas grenade, annoying aren't they
but every single boss will use them so you'll get used to it.

Mission 5: The secret Temple

Difficult mission involving lots of water. Problem on this level is the close
proximity of the enemy. Remember to remove all bodies from the scene! This
is very important especially at the place where you will find a sleeping ninja
(why would anyone wake up to see a ninja trying to kill them only to fall asleep
again?!). Anyway, the sleeping ninja is an easy and tempting target, but around
a patrolling woman and beyond that another scythe warrior and beyond that a dude
on the bridge. So if you kill one of them it is like a chain reaction. So
be like a feather and creep past the sleeping ninja, slot the clawed dragon woman,
go back slot the sleeping guy, go forwards slot everyone else. Simple.
Remember to stack up on all of the goodies that you find. I managed to
salvage a number of grenades, caltrops and many shurikens. The water can be used
to hide in, but it's a bitch to get out of so try not to. Somehow the ninjas on
the bridge can still see you so beware of that. Also be aware of the burning torches
that you can get fried on. The level is simple and is built in a large circular structure.
Around this is water and inhabited islands (don't go there) and a couple of boats.
You will find the boss up at the top of the map. When you go there you will find
Suzaku the Red Sparrow who reminds me of that snake from the jungle book. Anyway
you have to fight his lady called Yukihotura the Ice queen, ignore having to avoid
her icy gaze.

YUKIHOTURA (Ice queen) - Really easy to beat. She throws ninja stars and the
occasional grenade, but nothing too serious. Get in
for the cuts avoiding her massive knife weapon. When
you kill her you get to watch Suzaku look down at her
and stab her reeeeeeaaaallllyy slowly in the neck that
makes you feel kind of horrible. Then you get to watch
the cut scene and off he runs.

PROBLEMS
************************************************

Most of the e-mails that I have got are of codes and secrets. In the next updated
FAQ I'll put in the cheats and also the levels that are required to unlock the secret
items.

If anyone has any problems with the game or harsh questions then email me at
seiyru@hotmail.com. I was going to get onikage@hotmail.com, but someone has
already taken it. Be warned onikage, I will get you and your email adress.

The first of the problems that I would love to know of is the decapitation.
This problem bugged me everysingle day that I played Tenchu, watching the demos
that showed the ninjas cutting the heads off the enemy. I practised from different
angles and with different button combinations, but never found out. The
best way to do it was a jumping attack, but I really never knew. If anyone
finds out then please let me know.

HARSH DEATHS
************************************************

Here are some of the most honorable and most painful deaths that I have encountered
during the game. Many of the ninjas that died during them were subject to extreme
pain and suffering. We salute their courage and misfortune.

1. Shuiriken thrown high into the sky and then plummets into the unsespecting sentry's
neck. He screams and falls from a high wall and into a deep moat of freezing cold water.

2. Pursuing guard follows ninja across a custom made death trap. Guard stands on mine
and is thrown into air and onto a trap door. As he struggles to his feet, the
floor gives way and he falls onto a bed of razor sharp spikes.

3. Enemy guard falls to other enemy's arrows (most amusing!)

4. After being cut with katana, guard falls from roof of building and onto a burning
torch, he instantly explodes in fire and dies.
