0-0. About this game

Sonic Drift is and incredibly fun game for Game Gear.
It's sort of like Mario Kart, but with Sonic Characters
and more fun. Of course if you're reading this you
must know that so I won't waste your time.

0-1. About this FAQ

This FAQ was started out of boredom. It was finished
out of love.

0-2. About me

I'm just an obnoxious person who had nothing to do. And
I've only finished one FAQ, which was for Dynamite Cop.
Probably because I ENJOYED that, unlike the other work
of done, which is boring. Bah. : The goal of this
FAQ? To get me notoriety and blow as much time as
I can. Whee. :

0-3. Version History

Version 1-1 (11/27/00)- Initial Release. I made the
New and Noteworthy section (Wow, CJayC, are you feeling
alright? :)!

 Version 1-2 (12/30/00)- I got a Sidewinder Gamepad, that'll
make this easier. Another thing, I made a HUGE discovery.
Check 4-2. I am also going to make my maps more
accurate from now on. Added thanks section. Also, I
got a much more comfortable chair. Christmas rules. :
I'm also addicted to Team Fortress Classic, so don't
expect me on AIM much. :

Version 1-3 (NOT RELEASED)- Added more maps.

Version 1-4 (02/01/01)- White GP done.

Version 2-1 (02/01/01)- Unless someone finds an error,
this FAQ is finished. I'll start on a Sonic Drift 1 FAQ
tommorrow.

1. Character Classifications

These are here to help select a character. I strongly
recomend picking a character with good acceleration
because of the need to brake, especially in the later
levels.
Acceleration: How long it takes to get from 0%-100%.
The time will be given along with a grade. The grading
system is as follows...
0'03"99 or less: ////
0'04"00 to 0'04"99: ///-
0'05"00 to 0'05"99: //--
0'06"00 and up: /---
(Please note, I'm not perfect at hitting start, so these
may not be perfect, but they're DAMN close. :)
Coolness: Self-explanatory. Not like it really matters,
but... shut up. Uses same scale as below. :
Speed: Ack, this had to be purely subjective. So no
precise numbers. They'll be graded on a simple scale of
three. A "/" is a full space while and "-" is an empty
one. Example: //- =2/3. Why? Because it's prettier
than using Y/3. : These were all attained by watching
them on Emerald Hill 1
Handling: Handling, subjective. Y/3. Booooring. :
Class: The general group a character falls into.
The classes, in honor of the GPs (:) are the following:
Purple: Fast, poor acceleration. Recomended for experts.
Poor Handling. Practically useless in the Blue GP,
however, because of the need for sharp braking. Excell
in the purple GP because the turns are the softest.
White: Middle characters. They don't really excell in
anything, and there lies the problem. Not recomended for
anyone, thank GOD there are only 2. :
Blue: Fast acceleration, but low speed. Best handling.
Thrive everywhere.

1-1. Sonic

Biography: The blue hedgehog that's in every one of the
Sonic games. If you don't know who he is you've been
living under a rock. His arch-rival is Dr. Robotnik,
the sinister Dr.! Always foils his plans, oh, yippee.
I like Metal Sonic better. :
 Acceleration: 0'03"02 ////
 Coolness: ////-
 Speed: /--
 Handling: ///
 Class: Blue

1-2. Tails

Biography: An orphan Sonic adopted or something. He'd
rule if he weren't such a wuss all the time. : At
least he can fly and stuff, unlike sonic, who can just
run. :
 Acceleration: 0'03"20 ////
 Coolness: ////-
 Speed: /--
 Handling: ///
 Class: Blue

1-3. Amy

Biography: Sonic's irritating girlfriend. And some of
her levels drove me NUTS in Sonic Adventure. >:(
 Acceleration: 0'06"26 /---
 Coolness: -----
 Speed: ///
 Handling: /--
 Class: Purple

1-4. Eggman

Biography: Better known as Dr. Robotnik, this idiot's
evil plans are always foiled by a blue hedgehog. That's
never good. But he made Metal Sonic, so I forgive him.
As far as I know, this is the first Sonic game in which
he is referred to as Eggman (arguably a landmark)
 Acceleration: 0'05"32 //--
Coolness: ///-- (He's lucky Metal Sonic and Gamma,
like, totally rock. :)
 Speed: ///
 Handling: /--
 Class: Purple

1-5. Metal Sonic

Biography: I don't know much about him, but he's like
Sonic with blades and stuff. And he's WAY more evil
than that loser Robotnik.
 Acceleration: 0'03"70 ////
 Coolness: /////// (That's right, 7/5. He's THAT cool.
:)
 Speed: /--
 Handling: ///
 Class: Blue

1-6. Fang

Biography: What the hell? I THINK he's from that triple
chaos game or whatever it was called. Bah. But can you
really NOT like a purple cat in a cowboy hat? I thought
not.
 Acceleration: 0'04"16 ///-
 Coolness: ////-
 Speed: //-
 Handling //-
 Class: White

1-7. Knuckles

Biography: An echidna. Used to be on Robotnik's side,
then found out Sonic was REALLY the good guy and joined
his side. Uhm... yey?
 Acceleration: 0'04"38 ///-
 Coolness: ////-
 Speed: //-
 Handling: //-
 Class: White

2. Courses

Here I will guide you through every course in the game!
You'll receive a map along with tips! A will represent
the start and the rest of the points... it's really NOT
that difficult to figure out these maps. Just remember
that capitol letters are first.

    K Y
   J Z
  IHGFEDCBAgfedcba

 Tips

This stage is simple so it is great for tests. I
tested the characters here. The straightaway is at
least of the course. The only one category that
isn't good to test here is handling. :
  Points I-J, L-M, O-P, P-Q, Q-R, V-W, Z-a, W-X, Y-Z:
Brake here so you don't drive off the road (depending
on you racer you may have to lay off the accelerator).
Be careful not to turn and brake too hard, you might
   spin out of control.

  A q

 Points T-U, b-c, f-g, n-o: These are more challenging
turns you might need to brake at.
Throughout this course there are rocks you can jump on.
Try to get to them, it improves your speed, but don't
go out of your way.
Rings are worth points. If you don't have to go out
of your way get them.

This course is shaped like "SR." Those shameless
creeps, trying to sell Sonic R. :
This level is irritating because if you go off the
track, you fall, which wastes precious time
 Points C-D, H-I-J, Q-R-S, V-W, X-Y-Z, e-f-g, h-i-j,
j-k-l, n-o-p: Sharp turns, blah blah blah. :
 Points S, h, l: There's a spring here.
 Points M, b, d: Get to the spring, there's a break in
the road here and the spring is the only way to avoid
falling.
Point e: There's some weird rocket here. The screen
flashes white when you hit it, I'm not sure what exactly
it does.

4. Ever important, ALWAYS applying rules!

This is the stuff that you should MEMORIZE before you
even try the game. :

4-1. Turning

This is simpler than the majority of the games I play
(considering that's action, that's really simple).
Whenever you're flying down the road and see a turn,
you're going to need to brake. How much depends on
the severity of the turn. If it's a small one, you just
have to tap brake repeatedly while holding accelerate.
Other times you'll have to hold accelerate and brake.
Sometimes you have to let go of accelerate and tap brake.
And if it is REALLY sharp you'll have to let go of
accelerate and hold brake.

4-2. Items

[Please note that for the boxes you must press up to
achieve the desired effect]

Blue Box: Makes you invincible for a short period of
time.

Weird little orange thing: You bounce off these if you
hit them.

Rings: No idea.

Red Box: Speed Boost

Springs/Ramps/Rocks/Yellow Boxes: These all launch you up
into the air, increasing your speed.

Robotnik Balls: These throw your handling off and
invariably cause you to careen off the road (in other
words, it turns your game into Top Gear Pocket for a
short period of time. In case you haven't figured out
from my review of SD2, I REALLY hate that game. :)

Black Box: Spiked Ball of Doom! :

Rockets/Stars/drills: I haven't the foggiest what these
are. The screen flashes white when you get them.

Half-Pipe: If you're going fast enough you'll fly up
into the air. I haven't determined if these have an
effect on your speed.

Tunnels: Uhm... I sincerly hope you're not driving in
reality.

Red Snails: Obstacles that slow you down

Balloons: Screw up your handling
