About Tony Hawk's Pro Skater

===========================================================================

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is an awesome game brought to us by the wonderful
team at Neversoft. Forget any other skating game out now or ever to come
because this is the one that you're gonna want. Neversoft worked closely
with some of the best pro skaters including but not limited to Tony
Hawk, Chad Muska, and Andrew Reynolds. With they're help, Neversoft was
able to make everything as close to realistic as possible. Below are
some of the games features.

-10 skaters each modeled after their real life counterparts,
complete with their own signature moves, boards, and tricks.

-9 fully interactive areas to skate through including but not
limited to a school, a warehouse, a mall, and a deep canyon.
Each area has tons of ramps, rails, lips, and gaps for you to
take advantage of. Anything with an edge can be grinded!!

-Multiple modes including Career Session, Single Session, and
Free Skate. Modes unique to multiplayer includes Graffiti,
Horse, and Trick Attack. Graffiti is particularly my favorite.
You run around an area marking objects by tricking off of them.
If your opponent can do a better trick on your marked object it
        then becomes his object.

-Music includes tunes from bands such as Dead Kennedys,
Goldfinger, Primus, Speedealer, Even Rude, Suicidal Tendencies,
The Ernies, The Suicide Machines, Unsane, and The Vandals.

That should give you a good idea of what to expect from this game. Of
course, if your reading this then you probably own the game by now.

Character Profiles and Tricks

===========================================================================

*Before you emailing me telling me I've listed the same move numerous
times, I'm doing so you can just skip to the skater you want to skip to
and get everything there without having to jump around a whole bunch.
Also, the bios listed are taken directly from the instruction booklet*

Ok, I've divided this section up into 10 parts and gave it it's own
little contents so you don't have to guess the order of the skaters. It
really is much more convenient this way.

A "+" sign next to a number means that the move can be held for extra
points. A "+" sign alone means it's a grind and doesn't have a base
value.

--------- A. Tony Hawk --------- The father of two and husband
of one, Tony Hawk is arguably the single most influential
skateboarder of all time. Born and raised in the hazy daze of
southern California, Tony has forgotten more tricks than most
people learn in a lifetime. His contributions to the sport are
endless, most recently unearthing skateboarding's holy grail by
becoming the only person to successfully land a 900.

Explanation of the Trick System

===========================================================================
Are you having trouble reaching those Pro level scores of 40 and 50
thousand? If you are I suggest you read the next to sections carefully.

Neversoft has created an intricate trick system based off of the points
you recieve per trick, how many tricks you do before you land, and how
often you preform a trick. I bet I've lost you already haven't I? Below
is an example.

Let's say I start with a Fastplant...

      --------------- Fastplant = 250 1x ---------------

I did 1 trick worth 250 points so it's multiplied by 1 even though it
doesn't show it on the screen. So if I landed this trick I would recieve
250 points. But what if I decided to go for a kickflip right after I did
my fastplant?

      --------------------------------------------------------
      Fastplant(250) + Kickflip(100) = 350 x 2(2 tricks) = 700
      --------------------------------------------------------

This is where it gets interesting. We already know that a Fastplant is
worth 250 and if a Kickflip + a Fastplant = 350 then we know that a
kickflip is worth 100. But because we pulled off 2 moves before landing,
our score is multiplied by 2 which would bring us to a total of 700.
This kind of scoring is used all throughout the game. The only exception
would be with rotations.

Rotations kind of follow the same rule but they don't really count as
another trick or more points, just as a multiplier. Let's just use the
kickflip for this one.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------
      Kickflip(100) + a 180 = 200(this is because for every 180 degree
rotation, your multiplier goes up by 1)
      ----------------------------------------------------------------

The 180 in this trick didn't actually count as another trick, instead
the combo counted as a 180 Kickflip which is only 1 trick but multiplied
by 2 because their was a rotation in it. Also, whenever you throw a
rotation into a trick, you don't factor in the points you would get for
that rotation if you were to do it alone. You following me still? Every
180 degree rotation will make your multiplier go up by 1 for any trick
except other rotations. So if instead of a 180 in that last trick, it
was a 360, our score would be 300. If it was a 540 our score would be
400 and so on and so on. Really not worth it for just a kickflip.
Rotations are better saved for grabs.

Lets do something else this time, how bout we just ollie and do a 720.

      ----------------------------------------------- 180(50) + 360(100)
      + 540(150) + 720(200) = 200?
      -----------------------------------------------

As I said before, rotations won't effect other rotations so doing all
those spins got you a lousy 200 points.

Ok, enough of this low point shit. Let's get to some big stuff now. This
time lets try a 720 Benihana + 5-0 grind + Kickflip.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------
      720 Benihana(420, assuming we didn't hold it) + 5-0 grind(well say
      500 for arguments sake) + kickflip(100) = 1020 before we add in
      the multipliers.

lets see, theres x5 for the Benihana(1 for each 180 and 1 for the
trick) x1 for the 5-0 grind and x1 for the kickflip which would be
      x7.

      1020 x 7 = 7140(lotta points for one trick isn't it?)
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------

So as you can see, you have to get a decent amount of points and a pull
off a decent number of tricks to really rake in the points. But there is
one little problem. Variety counts!! Each time you do a trick it's point
value will decrease little by little until you're getting next to
nothing each time you pull off that trick. So make sure that you use a
variety of tricks while doing your thing.

Also, theres something you should know. Throughout the levels there are
bonus points and special areas that will count as part of a combo. The
bonus points are usually in out of the way places and the special areas
are just tough to pull tricks off from but both are well worth it. If
you were to grab a 500 point bonus in the process of doing that 7140
point combo your score would have been 12140. Good luck trying to find
them!

It's also possible to recieve half multipliers while playing. In order
to get a half multiplier, you must throw a 180 into your arsenal of
tricks when launching off from a kicker. Don't quite know why they don't
just give you a full multiplier like they would if you were in a
halfpipe though.

---------------------------- Other stuff worth mentioning
---------------------------- -All tricks can be performed in the switch
position. A switch trick occours when your skater performs a trick while
riding the opposite of his stance. For example, Tony Hawk rides goofy
foot. If you pull off a kickflip while riding in the regular stance,
you'll actually pull of a switch kickflip. I read somewhere that switch
moves will give you extra points but when I tested it, I didn't find
that to be true. Of course I only tested it with a few tricks.

-Fastplants actually launch you higher than an ollie or a nollie. Very
useful for stuff like launching off the big ramp on the san fransisco
level to obtain the hidden video.

-You can grind without pressing a direction while pressing the trianlge
button. But if you're trying to combo on a rail and grind again, do not
do this. More than likely you'll fall because, for some reason,
trianlge alone doesn't seem to work too well when going from a grind to
 a grind.

-In THPS, there are vert skaters and street skaters. If you really want
to have the best chance to reach scores into the thousands, you should
stick to using vert characters on courses like the skatepark and
roswell and use street skaters on couses like San Fransisco and the
Mall. Vert characters generally have higher stats in speed and air
while street skaters have higher stats in balance and ollie. Figure out
 who's who yourself.

-Whenever you ollie off of a moving vehichle, you perform a carplant.
These can only be done in the downtown and Frisco levels.

-Someone mentioned to me that nowhere in my FAQ did I say anything about
balancing so I figured this would be as good a spot as any. Anyway, You
can balance your skater using the left and right directional buttons
while grinding. But balancing gets harder with the grinds in a trick.
For example, lets say you start grinding a long rail and then jump up
and pull a kickflip. When you come back down, it'll be a little tougher
to balance your skater. When you get to your fouth grind in a trick,
your skater will fall over almost immediatly so take care to keep it at
3 grinds per trick. Of course it is possible to put more grinds in
there, just takes a little practice and some quick reflexes.

Helpful Tips for Scoring BIG!!

===============================================================================

I don't really know any other way to do this besides just listing a
bunch of one lined Do's and Don'ts type thing. Oh well, it works...

-Always freeskate the levels so you know where everything is.
Sometimes You'd be surprised on what you could find.

-Scope out and set up major combos near the beginning of a level. I
can usually pull of at least 10,000 before 10 seconds are up on most
    every level.

-Nollie or Fastplant whenever you can before a jump. It'll give you
an extra multiplier and sometimes be enough to push you to your
    goal.

-Use your signature moves to death. A fastplant with Hawk's 900 is
    worth 16,500 and that's only 2 tricks.
