DONPACHI - Instruction Manual Translation (Japanese Sega Saturn version)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

version 1.01 - April 28, 2001
Translated by Zigfried, contact me at Zigf22@hotmail.com if you want.

This is a translation of the Japanese Sega Saturn instruction manual for
DonPachi, released by Atlus, developed by Cave. I made this translation
several years ago (four I believe) so the quality might be... questionable.
Unfortunately, since I no longer own the game, I can't go back and improve
on it. So, this is what you get. Like it or leave it. ;-)

"Ladies and gentlemen, we are gathered at this time..."
These were the first words of the leader.
"...for an important address. I have given you thorough briefings. I
have spoken to you many times in this manner. This mission is for the sake
of our entire army. Our troops have accumulated many losses - this is
real war - and the enemy renews and strengthens their armaments. We, too,
have a Herculean army - thanks to you all."
This was a euphemism to describe a raid. So, he was saying it was our
duty, as troops in the army, to attack. Particular armaments would be
reinforced each time, and only the best troops would survive. The result
for our troops, and theirs as well, is that each time, with each raid, the
already powerful armies underwent a transformation.
"Leader, we have not exceeded the target's warpower, have we?"
"No, we have not. Because of this, particular positions for battles have
been chosen, and you troops will secretly be placed inside. So now, all who
will join in this attack, raise your hands. Nothing can be done without
spirit."
Would our army be able to do the unimaginable?
"This time, we could all be destroyed. Consider this carefully."
This mission will probably be the last. The last if we succeed, but we
could also die.
"Move out! The army will attack! We have our mission!"

GAME EXPLANATION
Donpachi is a vertical-scrolling shooting game. The player selects from
three different aircraft, and destroys the enemies that appear in succession.
Also, two player simultaneous play is possible. Player two can play from
the beginning, or can join a game in progress.
The A button fires shots, and the B button launches bombs. If the player
should die, he will start again where he died. Also, the aircraft's option
shot and laser will lose power when the player dies.

AIRCRAFT SHOT (button A)
Each aircraft has a different form of attack. Both the option shot and
laser increase in power as you gain the powerup icons.

BOMB (button B)
There are two forms of bomb attack (see page 11) that damage a wider range
of enemies on screen. The number of bombs is limited.

3 AIRCRAFT
(left) The red aircraft fires strong, straight shots.
(middle) The green aircraft has two strafing companions (move left/right).
(right) The blue aircraft fires a slower, spreading shot.

ITEMS

POWER
Each unit increases power stock by one. When you have 2 units, your option
shot and laser will increase in power by 1 level.

MAX-POWER
When you continue, this will be released. It raises your option shot and
laser power to the maximum level.

BOMB
Take this icon to add one bomb to your supply. If your stock is full, you
will gain points instead.

STAR BONUS
Acquire to gain 300 points. On top of that, at stage clear, for each star
gain a 1000 point bonus. But, if you die, star count falls to 0 and you
must rebuild your count.

HORNET BONUS
Each time you get one, you earn 100, 200, 400, 800, 1000, 2000, 4000, 8000,
10000, 20000, 40000, 80000, up to 100000 points successively. But, if you
die, the point gain clears, and you must start from 200 points.

OPTION SYSTEM
Each aircraft has two forms of primary, frontal attack. Use the A button
to select which attack you would like to use. Collect power-up icons to
increase the strength of these attacks.

LASER (hold down the A button for a short time)
When you hold down the A button for a short time, the frontal shots will form
a laser for as long as you hold the button (or until you die). This is a
stronger form of attack, but you will lose strafing/spreading fire if using
either the green or blue aircraft.

OPTION SHOT (press A button)
Each aircraft has a distinctive form of attack. See details on page 9.

MULTI-BOMB SYSTEM
Like with shots, there is also a system by which you can launch one of two
bomb types. All bombs are fired by pressing the B button (if you still have
available bombs in stock)- the difference is between whether or not your
laser is engaged at the time. If not, you will use the spread bomb. If your
laser is currently in use, you will use the laser bomb.

SPREAD BOMB will damage a wide area of onscreen enemies.
LASER BOMB temporarily expands the laser for a short time, even destroying
   bullets and other attacks.

(this page not translated- it is an explanation of the point gain system.
Basically, the more things you shoot in a short time, the larger "chain"
that will be produced, and the more points you gain)
