------------FS98 COMPATIBLE TEXTURES FOR ALPHA SIMULATIONS------------
----------------------SHENYANG J.6 PAKISTANI AF-----------------------
----------AVAILABLE FROM www.alphasim.co.uk/DL Freeware.htm-----------
######################################################################

A line from the aforementioned webpage:

"Please treat them as you would other freeware, ie. modify, repaint,
post on other free sites, but please do not try to sell them."

So that's the legal question answered, let's get on with it.

Alpha Simulations have decided to be very generous and make some of
their older aircraft available as freeware. Go to www.alphasim.co.uk
and click on "Freeware" or enter the full address as shown above.
Most of the aircraft are compatible with CFS and upwards. They also
work in FS98, but on some the textures do not display properly. By
accident, I found that the textures of the offending aircraft are
actually bitmaps despite their .*af filename extensions. This means
they can be converted to FS98 compatible textures.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Note that at the time of writing (18th Sep 02), the following aircraft
are known to be incompatible with FS98/CFS1:

Junkers CL.1 monoplane

Seafire Mk47
-I only recently discovered that the Seafire is not FS98/CFS1
compatible. In its accompanying readme file, it suggests that it is
CFS1 compatible (which usually means also FS98 compatible, except for
the textures) by stating: unzip to the root folder of CFS1, CFS2,
FS2000 or FS2002. In fact, it is seemingly incompatible with CFS1,
and is also incompatible with FS98.

Also, I discovered an apparent problem with the Yak-28 Firebar. Upon
loading into FS98, the aircraft doesn't display properly (only parts
of it show up). This seems strange, since the Yak-28 in "Air Power:
The Cold War 1940-1971" (all aircraft by Alpha Simulations) works fine
in FS98. Unfortunately, this being a commercial release, I cannot
legally redistribute the Yak in it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

How to install:

1. Download "Shenyang J.6 Pakistani AF" from the website listed above.
2. Install it to whatever FS versions you like. You really should
know how to do that by now, but if you don't, follow the
instructions in the respective aircraft's readme file.
3. Unzip this package to a temporary directory (you've probably done
this by now, unless you're reading this on the source website.
4. Extract textures.zip to the texture folder of the aircraft in
FS98's aircraft directory i.e. only the FS98 installation of the
aircraft. Say yes to the overwriting of files.
5. Run FS98 and go fly it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

-So what's wrong with the J.6 textures?

Bitmaps, not FS98 palette, though they are all 256x256.

-What's been done?

Recoloured & converted to FS98 textures.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Note that if you are running FS98 in 8-bit colour mode, the aircraft
will often not look good. This is caused by certain colours
displaying as black in 8-bit colour mode. Unfortunately, I have
neither the time nor the patience to redraw everything in 8-bit colour
and even if I did, the colour scheme wouldn't be accurate. Therefore
you should run FS98 in 16-bit colour if possible.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I apologise to anyone who tried to find other texture sets by typing
"texturesfs98" into flightsim.com's file search. I did put it into
the file_id.diz, but it wasn't reproduced in the file library. As an
alternative I now include others.txt, a list of other files by myself.
This is only current at the time of writing of course, so check my
newest upload for the newest list (type "gordon waugh" into the file
search).

----------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE TO CFS1 USERS: (other than myself)
Some of the aircraft have 512x512 or 1024x1024 bitmaps, which won't
display in CFS1. You can use my textures in CFS1 if you want, but
you'll probably get a better looking aircraft by just resizing the
files to 256x256. That shouldn't be too taxing for you all, though I
will do a "texturesCFS1" IF there is demand for it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

MORE LEGAL BITS: (sorry)

These files are freeware. You may upload them to other sites so long
as you do not sell them and the website doesn't charge for them. The
aircraft and the artwork in the textures are still copyrighted to
Alpha Simulations and the individual(s) responsible. I just modified
them to work in FS98.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Questions, comments or criticisms?

If they're about the aircraft, don't bother me as they're not mine.

If they're about the textures, send them to:
gwaugh_flightsim@yahoo.co.uk
Before you email me telling me that my textures are rubbish, bear this
in mind: I did them primarily for my own purposes, and I only packaged
them and uploaded them because I thought other people might want to
fly the planes in FS98 and have them display properly.
