The Douglas DC-9:
=================

  Douglas did not produce a rival to the 727, but two years before the 737, and several years after the trident and BAC 1-11, the DC-9-10 was launched. The Douglas aircraft immediately sold well, it had (in the later versions) a much higher capacity than the 1-11, Douglas' greater production capability, and the P&W JT8D which was probably better suited to civil applications than the R-R Spey which was very noisy. The DC-9 was stretched to become the DC-9-30, the -50, and then a new programme was launched, the MD-80 (formerly the DC-9 Super 80). The MD-80 series were several aircraft of different lengths and performances, with uprated engines, a redesigned wing and tail, and improvements in the cockpit, cabin and in the structure, permitting longer ranges and higher weights. The programme was relaunched again as the MD-90 and MD-95, then when Boeing bought McDonnell Douglas, it became the new B717! The fact that the B737 seats six abreast, and hence has a lower aspect ratio, probably slightly greater reliability and a less haphazard launch & mancufacturing history are probably contributing factors as to why nearly twice as many 737s have been sold as DC-9/MD-80/MD-90/B717 variants.

KLM:
====

  The Dutch national airline is one of the largest in the world, having several subsidiaries including KLM Cityhopper, and KLM UK (Formerly Air UK). Recent plans for a merger with BA have (thankfully!?) been dropped. It operates many types of aircraft from all the major manufacturers, American, British, and Dutch (Fokker).
