United States Navy
"Old Faithful" #66
SH-3 Sea King Helicopter
model by Tom Miller

Info:
This is a simulation of The United States Navy
Sea King "Old Faithful" #66 stationed aboard the
Helicopter Carrier Iwo Jima. This chopper was responsible
recovery of many of the Apollo Astronauts after splashdown.
I could not get the wheel pod floats "textured" as I used up my
limit on textures on other areas. It would have had the Carrier
name on them. As this is an approximation of a real
chopper please forgive me for it's shortcomings.

Thanks to:
Keith for doing the FS6 conversion and flight testing the same.

Bob Tremblay for creating the two front strobes.

Note: this is a total rework of my S-61.
There are now 10 texture files instead of 5 for improved graphics
including a door-open change with flaps applied. There is less of a
visual problem with the nose bleedthrough.
The body is shorter and this version has a few bugs fixed on the
Flight Dynamics. It may still have a tendancy to loose control and spin
at full speed. I have successfully recovered by cutting power and
applying full flaps. Then after it slows return to speed.
It seems to do this annoying thing if you apply full ailerons in a
quick or jerky manner at full speed. It will however fly with a bit
more responsiveness than previous versions and the ground
characteristics are better as I have reversed the footprint. It's
been tested with auto-coordination turned off but it should fly either
way.

FS5 Installation:
Requires either Microsoft Flight Simulator 5.x AND Flight Shop (FSFS)
or FS6 for Windows 95 and the convertor.

1)Air file to Flitsim5/pilots or Flitsim5/sim.
2)Textures (0af thru 9af) to flitsim5/texures

Effects:
3 Strobe lights
Wheels retract.
Rotor blades appear on engine off.
Rear door opens and winch line appears with flaps down.

Flying____/
First you must understand that FS5/FSFS helicopters are not yet capable
of truly vertical flight. Some forward momentum is necessary. This
model needs about 11mph to prevent stalling. So, keeping this in
mind:My Sea King will takeoff at full flaps (F8) at about 12mph
regardless of whether or not you have the parking brake on. Keep your
nose pitch down a little also.At about a few hundred feet you may then
raise the gear and cycle through the flaps to get faster air speed.
That is F7, F6, F5 (or no flaps). With flaps retracted and wheels up the
SH-3 should reach it's top speed of about 150mph.

Landing: slow down to about 60 mph in flaps up. You can use the
spoilers(/) for an air brake. Then drop the nose just before you hit
flaps (F6) and it should raise a bit so, keep her under control for a
moment. Go to (F8) flaps and you can land pretty easy at a descent rate
of about 250fpm. Don't forget your gear when you land.

Legal:
Freeware. Use as you please.
